women in your 30s or older - clothing question

I went shopping today. I bought stuff at Old Navy, Ross, and Kohls. I did go into A&E but didn't find anything I liked personally, but saw quite a few items that are appropriate for someone my age (early 30's).

The places I shop at the most are GAP, Old Navy, Loft, Kohls, and Ross. Sometimes Lane Bryant though I have lost enough weight now that it is hard to find anything that isn't TOO big. Sometimes Penny's but it's rare that I find anything I like there except for when the comfy summer dresses come out. I don't like Forever 21 at all because their stuff looks cheap to me *shrug*.

I guess I'm in the minority: I really don't care what someone else is wearing or where they bought it. I wear what I like and what makes me feel good, and if someone else doesn't like it, they don't need to look at me. Unless you are paying for it, you should not judge.

I totally agree!!!

And we all wonder why girls have such low self esteem. Could it be because the moms can't even be respectful of what other people choose to wear? Wear what you like and don't worry what other people think.

I'm a size 10/12 kids, and yes I have clothes from the kids department, and no I don't care if a 10 year old has the same shirt as me. If a younger person wearing the same thing as me bothers me, then I probably need to work on my self esteem and priorities. I have more important issues to be worried about than anxiety over a teenager sharing my wardrobe. And if someone wants to mistake me for a teenager on the beach in my Aeropostale bathing suit, great I'll take it as a compliment, pretty sure those days won't last forever, might as well enjoy them now.

Also, where do you guys suggest I shop if not in the kids and juniors department? Even XS and 00 in most brands are too large for me. Because of my size, I have a really hard time finding clothes. I buy what I like in whichever department it happens to be in. I find it kind of ironic that I actually like Coldwater Creek, but everything in there is too big for me to wear. I love Banana Republic too, but can only wear the 00 and then some of that is too big, and all of it is too expensive. If I limited myself to the women's dept or stores for women, I'd end up naked half the time.

On the other side of that, my girls who wear bigger clothes than me, sometimes buy their clothes in women's department because the jrs are all too small for them. Now I've really ruined it for some of you. You might see one of my 11 years olds in your old lady shirts!!! Hate to break it to you guys. I know a lot of teens and college kids who shop in all those "old lady" stores, so if your goal is to not be in the same shirt as that age group, good luck with that. Loft, Banana Republic, Anne Taylor - those are my sister and her friends' favorite stores to shop at, and they are all teenagers. She can't stand Abercrombie or Aeropostale, but Bass and Talbot and those types she loves. She's even got a tan jacket from Coldwater Creek that she got when she was 14. It's really cute, if I could fit in it, I'd steel if from her.

It's really very silly to say age X must shop here and age X must shop there. Shop where you want to.

It's sad that women feel the need to be so judgemental and critical of each other.

It so is..

I found this quote today and thought it perfect for this thread..

You can tell who the smart women are. They are the ones you see building one another other up, instead of tearing each other down..

this thread has been interesting. popcorn::

how do you know where someone buys their clothing unless they have a logo splashed across a body part? and why does it matter WHERE someone shops? i think age-appropriate has more to do with particular styles versus stores.

i am 38. my DD is 12. we wear the same style of jeans because they fit us both well (and because i was tired of her borrowing my jeans). we also have some similar, simple t-shirts (I like Banana for these because they are thicker and fit well). funny enough, DD has more curves than i do (i am built pretty much straight up and down). i also wouldn't say i'm dressing too young or she's dressing too old because the things we have similar are just basic pieces like tees and jeans.

but in the end, who cares? really? why does it matter what someone else wears? as long as you aren't flaunting things that nobody needs to see, then i don't care what you wear.

There is so much stupid in this thread I don't know where to start.

My 14 year old would never ever wear that red top. WAY to mature for her and she's a conservative dresser. I like it.

Wear whatever jeans fit your body type.

A plain t-shirt is a plain t-shirt. There are no tween plain t-shirts.

My daughter often raids my closet and I'm 44. Drives me nuts. No, I don't shop where she shops. I should tell her to stop it as people will judge her.

Haven't read the whole thread but I buy stuff that looks good regardless of where it is purchased.

Wow 24 pages!! I'm wondering if there is debate or arguments here! Anyway.. I don't care...

I'm very petite (5'1" 104 lbs) and I wear juniors clothes. I can't fit in women's clothing. I can do petite clothing.. but I see more discounts at AE and Aero. If it looks good on me and it fits nice, then why not. However.. I won't wear anything that looks too teenagerish... I don't want to look too much like a high schoolers. Jeans are jeans.. T-shirts are t-shirts. :)

Im just impressed with anyone who can fit into them at my age (sighhh). I dont think it's where you buy them but how you wear them at an older age. A teenager can get away with a baby tee, etc., whereas it just looks like we are trying to relive our youth when we do it. Those stores have lots of clothes that look casual yet tasteful for our age. I say go for it!

I am 38 and I love AE! I stick to their things that are more mature and flattering, though. No jeans full of holes and modest feminine blouses. And I love a lot of their sweaters (Not all. Some are ugly-Christmas-sweater-ish) and cute little slip on shoes! And their "soft n sexy" line of tees are awesome! (As long as they aren't too trendy of a cut) I don't see all that much logo-blasted items in their stock lately. They have a large selection so you have to dig a little, I suppose.
DD10 came home recently and announced that Justice is no longer cool and for the 5th grade set it is Aero, Abercrombie and Victoria's Secret Pink! No way on the last one little lady. Even if the clothes are tasteful, my 10 year old will not be wearing anything that says Victorias Secret on it!! So yes, the Middle School set has apparently found this!

"The PINK stuff won't say Victoria's Secret on it. It will say PINK on it somewhere. Except for some of the low cut, drapey T-shirts, much of the PINK line is pretty nice and comfy. The slouch Boyfriend lounge pants are really comfortable and the sweatshirts and hoodies are great. They wash up well and last for years.

As a 50 year old, I don't wear PINK out of the house but I have three pairs of the Boyfriend lounge pants and a thinner pair of WVU-themed lounge pants. I love wearing them when I get home from work and the length is great for my 34 inch inseam. I haven't found any lazing-around-the-house pants that are as comfortable anywhere else.

My college daughter mainly wears the yoga pants, leggings, and sweatshirt type types. I would have no problem allowing a 5th grader to wear any of their more modest stuff."
You're my type of gal, me too, just purchased a pair of sweats off their Pink line and they are just so comfortable. I also wear VS yoga pants and T's. VS used to also make the very best T-shirts, they changed a lot tho, they were super comfy, never wrinkled, could wear them right out of the wash or travel and they always looked good, and they made you look really good too.
