WOC Cancelled Due to Earthquake

Title says it all! I'm leaving the park now. All three shows (they had added a third one) tonight have been cancelled due to the quake earlier. What a bummer! I was hoping to see it. Guess I'll have to wait! There were, as expected, tons of angry people with FP's from the picnics/meals.

Disney can't control Mother Nature....its a bummer but what can Disney do about an earthquake??

Can someone tell me why the earthquake caused it to be canceled? It was my understanding that the earthquake was pretty far from the park.

Not sure. They did Fantasmic! tonight with no issues. I didn't have passes for WOC or anything, I was just planning to catch a glimpse.

If I had to guess.... something jiggled loose? In reality I have no idea, just a guess.

well it was felt in the park and and rides were shut down. I guess for safety reasons they need to check everything in WOC

That makes sense. As much as I'm sure it was disappointing for those there tonight, I suppose we can be grateful that safety is put first.

We were in the park and didn't feel anything. We were told that one of the riser platforms for the pumps was not functioning. They had divers in the water. Earlier we were on the ferris wheel and noticed 2 different groups in the water looking at the pumps and some electrical connections on one of the house things that have lights mounted. We didn't bother trying anything with customer service since there was no guarantee that it would be fixed for Thursday.

It's a real bummer for my kids. They are 8 & 5 and we kept them up late especially since we live in the central time zone.

Twitter feeds seem to be citing "platform damage"--TreyQ3's explanation would fit under that umbrella.

I'm hoping it's easy to fix, and I'm sorry for anyone who didn't manage to see the show tonight. :( This has definitely convinced me to avoid the pricey dinner packages if I try to see the show in October, though I'd risk a picnic meal. IF picnics aren't offered in October and the show's running, then I don't know quite what I'll do, because I don't want to wait in line for hours for a FP.

This is the 27th night since the show opened, and I believe there have been 81 (potential) shows. 4 cancellations (3 tonight and the infamous 10:15 show where a viewing area pipe burst) out of 81 shows is right around a 5% chance of cancellation. I'm not blaming Disney for the problems that caused cancellation, but I hesitate to spend $45-$50 (with tax and tip) or 4-5 hours total waiting, with a 1/20 chance of not being able to see the show.

With dinner package already purchased, I'm really hoping for the best... Hopefully this will be repaired quickly.

You are the statistics queen! :wizard: Out of sheer curiosity, are these stats somewhere or did you count everything up?

And fwiw, with a 95% success rate, I'd take those odds. Clearly a personal call of where's the line, but 95% is pretty dang good in my opinion.

Clearly, Disney cannot be blamed for malfunctions, but they really need to come up with a back up plan for those purchasing the meals/picnics for the sole purpose of attaining WoC tickets! What a nightmare! I will be doing the dining package (taking a chance) but have booked it at the beginning of our trip, just in case a cancellation occurs!!:scared1: Hope they can get this fixed soon!

I just counted the days on the calendar and multiplied by 3 since I THINK every day had a scheduled "third" show per this board and MiceAge.

You're right that a 95% success rate is pretty good, but I hate to "gamble". If it was more like a 1/100 shot of cancellation, that sounds like a good bet, but the part of me that hates risks shudders to pay $50 for a meal that wasn't that good, with something like 1/20 shot of the show not running. (Granted, my sample size of "public shows" is small. Once it's fixed it could go off without a hitch for 100+ shows! That's what I'm hoping, anyway. :) )

If the show cannot run tonight--and I very much hope it DOES run!--it will be interesting to see what Disney tells the people who arrive for dining packages, and if it affects the picnics or if they'll issue refunds for the prepaid ones upon request. If the show IS down for several days--again, I really hope that doesn't happen!--then you could argue the dining option may be the better gamble than the prepaid picnic, since there is no penalty for skipping your dining reservation, but you already paid $13-$15 for the picnic and you may not be able to get that back.

Hmm...yeah I'm just gonna try and watch it from the pier instead of getting a ticket or meal.

Wow, if the small "foot massage" earthquake did that much damage then I would say it was a poor design or poor execution.

Am feeling better about the picnic option now. Will not feel so put out to spend $30 on $15 worth of food plus 2 nice bags and not see the show than I would to spend $85 on $25 of food plus time spent sitting in a restaurant.

Will be very interested to see if the shows go on tonight! hope the repairs are quick and easy or this could be an embarassement.

So, what time did they cancel the show?? did they learning anything from their first cancellation mistake, what did they do for the people that had dinner packages last night??

I read on another site that the shows were cancelled at around 8:20pm.

I'm saying there's a connection, but it's interesting that the last reservation for the Dining Package is at 8:30pm.

well earthquake in a huge body of water causes a typhoon effect. It makes it shake even more in the water than on land...

my pool goes all crazy in a earthquake, water splashing out and everything in the pool goes crazy...

Editor's Note 7/8: The full cancellation of World of Color performances Wednesday night can't be blamed on the afternoon earthquake for certain. Multiple buoys that help raise the show platform up to the waterline sprung leaks and filled with water at some point before the platform was raised Wednesday evening. The middle and left platforms weren't aligned properly when the underwater scissor lifts were commanded to lock the platforms in place, with the middle platform suffering the most damage as the two massive structures were wedged into each other at an angle causing stressed structural beams and damaged fountains. A full team of divers, engineers, and outside contractors have been brought in to assess just how bad the damage is before the repairs can begin, or even what the repairs need to be, and there's no word yet how long all that may take. - Al Lutz

Doesn't look like WoC will be happening for awhile.:sad2:
