WL question--- why is courtyard an upgrade?

I just returned from WL-- we stayed three nights--- I requested and paid for a Woods View-- I wanted QUIET and not to face the pool---they said upon check in that they had NO woods view rooms-- how does that happen if that is what I paid for and booked over 6 weeks prior? And they say the courtyard is an "upgrade"- but I don't see how-- we were behind a leaning tree and heard noise all the time--- just curious as to how you book one type, dont get it-- and then dont like the one you get---

I think that they consider anything that has a view of any body of water and upgrade.
I would think that even though you book your room in advance they only have so many, standard view, woods view rooms and they over book the different views, because they know that they have "x" amount of rooms within the hotel.

I agree with you. We booked a woods view room there because DH wanted a quiet view. We did get what we requested. Depending on what courtyard view you get, it can be quite noisy with the pool right there. Did you talk to the front desk about this at all? I agree that this type of "upgrade" may not make everyone happy.

I understand overbooking-- but at what price-- why even choose, request or pay for a certain room then? What if I had paid for the courtyard and gotten downgraded? I didnt complain because I had never been to the WL before and didn't know what to expect-- next time I will know better--- and will ask for a TRUE upgrade--

We heard a good bit of noise from the entrance to the lodge, as our courtyard room was very close to the main lobby-- but even though we weren't RIGHT next to the pool-- the way the hotel is set up-- in a horseshoe fashion-- the noise from the pool below seemed to travel easily to our balcony---

You can always ask to be moved as soon as a more suitable room is available.

I understand your concern and see what you are saying about wanting the woods view room... I just wanted to respond to the "Why".

Standard rooms are anything that look at a parking lot or roof top.... Cheapest rooms

Woods view rooms are the rooms that look at trees and have no view of water... middle price

Courtyards are the rooms that look at any type of water (main pool, quiet pool, lake, etc.) most expensive.

Disney categorizes by view, even though the rooms are the same inside.

With that said rooms are not "Downgraded". They will oversell a category and "upgrade" to the next, but they will not over sell and downgrade. Most people don't mind an upgrade and in fact welcome them if not ask for them at check in. In your case (and the case of WL) I agree that the woods view rooms are the best because they are quiet and peaceful, but that is not the case for most. One of the biggest requests at any resort that I have worked at is Pool view. I guess they thought that you would enjoy the upgrade, which is not always the case.

We just got back from WL. We were in room 4153 overlooking the pool. I didn't hear any noise from the pool with the sliding glass doors shut. I made a point to listen for noise but didn't hear any. We had originally booked a standard view room, when we checked in I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. We got a room over looking the pool and the lake. We could the boat parade from our balcony.

Just a note on the room requests. We are planning our first trip to WDW for next June. In looking at hotel options the one thing I've noticed is that Disney is very explicit and upfront about the fact that your room requests are only requests. They are noted on your reservation but are never guaranteed.
