WL - pool crashing problem

"Most of us here save our money carefully to stay at Disney resorts because the family vacations and memory building are important to us. That is our right. When paying money for a certain resort, I expect that the people using the pools there are paying guest."

And that's my point.....this really isn't about pool hopping causing the pools to be so overcrowded that those staying at the resort can't find a spot to swim or sit. It has everything to do with being worried because someone got something they weren't entitled to and didn't pay for. I guess I'll never understand why people worry so much about that. At any rate, I've been to WDW during very busy times and during very slow times. Pool hoppers have never been a problem for me. I guess I'll just count myself lucky that for some reason I seem to be immune to it!

I posted because I have a right to. And I don't recall anyone saying that pool hopping was ok, or that any of us who disagree ever pool hop or that any of us think Disney should allow pool hopping. Although I'll guarantee you that if someone did post a thread with that subject, some of the very same people posting here would be there jumping down their throats. People who don't even know what the policy is cannot come onto these boards and ask about it without getting bashed...for no other reason than just to bash.

It would take a lot of people being affected by pool hopping before DW saw a lot of complaints. Apparently it isn't a big enough problem for enough people.

Thank goodness you didn't sit on them so long that they got numb and you couldn't type. Then I would've been forced to try and figure out how to say what you said so well! I agree with you completely!

I just had to say - thank you DisneyFreaks! Nobody ever agrees with me - this is such a new, and pleasant feeling!

Anyway, when you complain about something that bugs you and somebody (usually it's my husband who does it to me) says something like, "Well, that's stupid! Why should that bother you?!" (and then my husband usually goes )
" You don't even know what you're talking about - that's so dumb!" -- well that just sort of hurts your feelings, you know?

If you don't like how I feel about pool hopping, you'd really hate how I feel about people who cut in line!!!

OK, I've been reading all the posts and here are my random thoughts on everything I read.

1. Perhaps people don't realize they can't use the pools if they don't stay on property (logical to us, but maybe not to others) Afterall, when people say Disney, don't you think of hotels, golf courses and shopping all as "Disney" or do you just picture the theme parks? These people can go to resorts to eat, shop, poke around, perhaps they assume they can swim too.

2. As far as getting off the boat, perhaps they bring their stuff (as well as their snacks and waters) to the park with them so they don't have to go back to their rooms to change if they want to cool off in the middle of the day, sometimes these resorts can be spread out.

3. Maybe Disney puts up with it to a point because its good advertising. People come and swim in the pools and perhaps while their there they stroll around, see the convenience of staying on-property and that's how they book next time.

4. I for one would not want to wear a wrist band (and no it's not because I'm concerned about tan lines) but they irritate me. perhaps some people may have allergic reactions to them, sometimes they can slice into your arm and cut you. Then what? People sue Disney for their injury and "pain and suffering?"

5. Yes, I too spend lots of money to stay on-property but I do it for convenience and to get the whole Disney experience. Yes, pools get crowded, but so don't the restauants (should you only be allowed to eat at your own resort?), what about the busses? It could go on and on in my opinion.

Anyways, those are my thoughts, love em or leave em! LOL

I hear ya loud and clear. Sometimes there are just things that happen that totally bug you. What a sad world if you can't talk about it without having someone stomp on you for it or tell you how stupid you are for feeling the way you do. No one's feelings are stupid and everyone has a right to vent once in awhile.
And Hayley, I have a feeling you and I are on the same wave length when it comes to line cutting. I sometimes have to remind myself that I am in the "happiest place on earth". {Grrrrrrrr}

I never ever said I thought Pool hopping was ok..and I don't see where anyone else did.

I have a problem with people who "just know" who the pool crashers are. Yes, I read where you overhear people's comments...it's not that I have never known someone was pool crashing..or never overheard anyone talking about the pool not being theirs..but I really don't know if they were given permission most of the time (we've had guests with permission, and I know they have said they would love to stay on Dis property sometime, maybe you overheard them)...or if they were DVCers. I see and hear people here and there who admit to cheating...but not enough to make me think they are the reason for no chair. Most of the time I can't get a chair, it's because people left the area, but also left their towels, and I can't tell if the chair is free. I refuse to let it ruin my vacation, or post on a board that I can "tell" by looking at them with their backpacks, or their clothing that they must be from the other side of the tracks (who really knows where anyone is really coming from?) I know for darn sure, I can't remember all the faces in my hotel to tell if people are staying there or not.
People can't even come to these boards and ask a simple question about the pools (or the mugs..why not throw that in too LOL), without the same people coming on to tell them they are sinners if they dare to step foot in a pool not of their own. How much nicer to just explain the rules, and the reason for them, without being snotty.
On one of the other pool threads, we actually had someone quit on her second day of finding these boards..when I talked to her on the phone (she emailed me privately and then called me) she was actually crying...and had no interest in continuing her trip to Disney, since she thought some of the people she encountered here, she would be finding there. She was going to be staying at All Stars and really felt put down and insulted from that thread.
I don't think this is the type of board that was meant to have threads just so someone could come and ..well, I don't even want to use the word that was used. These are public boards, and you know, if you start a thread on pool hopping, and moan and groan about those coming to your fancy hotel from the "cheaper" ones, that people who disagree are going to hop on this. If you really just wanted to complain, you can "grab" the few names of those who always say the same thing, and just email them privately..or again, start a yahoo list, if you don't want the rest of us responding. But you post..and until Trekker shuts it once again, I have the right to respond.

Just to add in my .02 cents, the reason that WDW doesn't do more to stop this is simple. For instance, like most people we started out in the moderates on Disney property. Then like most, we began to tour the other resorts to see if we would want to stay there in the future. I have toured every disney property by walking the grounds, eating at the rest. and looking at the pool (I have never once jumped in it or even sat in the chairs) to see if I thought it would be worth the extra money to stay there. After touring WL I felt that it was certainly worthy of my money on a few occasions. However, I have chosen not to stay on certain properties in other cities (for instance Las Vegas) because I was restricted as to what I could see when touring the property esp. the pool areas. Disney knows that this is what allures a lot of people to take that extra step and justify the extra cost for a better resort.

Now I don't agree with pool hopping at all. I wouldn't go into a local hotel just to swim if I wasn't a patron. However, colored wrist bands wouldn't work. There are many families who vacation yearly, biyearly and even quarterly both on property and off property. For instance they may stay once at WL and then next time stay offsite or at AS. If they were given a wristband from the last stay, what is to keep them from going back to WL on the next stay. You would have to keep changing the wristbands every so many weeks/months. Even then, people will keep collections from everytime they go and after going back there will be no telling. You still need WL security to check current resort guest anyway. The only viable option would be to fence off the area where the guest can use his/her resort key. This way when you check out your not allowed to return. Problem is Disney doesn't want to have to put up the fence because it will deter future patrons. The pool area is a big draw to theming in that resort. To put up a fence is to say we don't think everyone gets to enjoy the beauty of it unless you pay for it. Also what about the geiser area, is that only allowed to be looked upon by the guest or can everyone enjoy. Just my .02 cents.

Honestly, I am not too worried about WDW doing something about it, I know they will.

They started the wristband thing at SB and they also starting putting up a fence around the BWI pool during the busy seasons. I do seem to attract the pool hoppers that like to brag.........maybe that's beacuse I gave up my table for a larger family that was staying at ***.

No one is accusing anyone of anything. The OP was trying to vent about something. Anyone who in their opinion felt she was wrong jumped down the throats of those who agreed with her. Why doesn't she have the right to express how she felt? Isn't there enough fighting going on in the world today to have to read about it here when all we want to do is have some fun planning our vacations?

I'm in Ohio, too, by the way - you could come over for coffee and we could complain about all kinds of things....line cutting.....people who don't move to the center of the auditorium in shows like "Honey I shrunk the audience".....people who let their kids run around nice restaurants....oh, I have all kind of things I like to complain about!!

I agree with you 100% that pool crashing is bad at wlv. I would add that it isn't just people coming over on the boat from MK, but also a lot of teens and tweens come over from ft. wilderness. Once on memorial day weekend they checked our resort ids, and had to run off several groups of kids during the time we were there. I really like the idea of the wrist bands. If they put a fence around the pool at wl I think I would cry, that would be a crime to the view. The wl pool is small without crashers, and with the villas it can become very full and crowded anyway. It seems much busier to me after they built the villas, even with the quiet pool over there.

including WDW. I saw people at POR come to the pool in the early morning, throw their belongings on various "prime" chairs, and then waltz off to parts unknown. What an interesting social experiment it was, watching folks saunter to the pool, look at the stuff, and then sit somewhere else. It took over an hour, before someone came along, and moved the magazines, sweatshirts, etc. to a table, and sat down in the chairs. I am pretty sure that the folks who "staked out" the chairs and then left were resort guests. I wanted to stick around for the fireworks, but we had to get back to our room to pack up. As I was coming out of our room, probably 21/2 hours after the stuff had been left, I overheard a woman complaining to her friend that "they moved our stuff! our chairs are gone, canya believe it!!" sheesh! I think it is too bad when you let these folks spoil your vacation. If "Pool hoppers" are impacting your vacation, and you know they are not resort guests, rat them out, but to spend your time at the pool "watching" to make sure there aren't any would be defeating the purpose of vacationing, IMHO. Note : I am not implying that any posters here have been doing this. Life (and in particular, your vacation) is too short. I personally have not been impacted by pool hoppers that I know of, so for me, the whole wristband/ secret code thing is unwarranted and I would look on it as a nuisance, especially since I would probably lose the darn bracelet and most definitely would forget the code!!! I also have to say, though, that if CMS are standing around TELLING guests what a problem it is, they should either do something about it or tell the CMs to zip it.

I wonder if you would be so understanding if someone who decided not to pay their rent showed up at your house to move in? If you aren't concerned about people "who got something they aren't entitled to and didn't pay for", then you wouldn't care, right? Can anyone borrow your car? It's always easy to pretend others are being elitist and snobby until you look at an issue in a way that it would effect you.

That's not what I said..nor did anyone else. I was responding to the person who said those of us who didn't agree with the OP (and for what it's worth..again, I'm not at all for pool hopping..nor have I seen anyone else voice that...I just don't like when it turns from pool hopping to "I can tell where they came from, and it's not my fancy hotel"), should not respond to the board. I agree with you..we all have the right to comment on what the OP said..including those who don't agree. I did not say you had no right to complain (a word I prefer on a Disney board).

I DID say that if you didn't want the rest of us to respond, then you should take it private. Big difference.

Anybody who wants to complain about stuff is welcome to PM me anytime - When my girlfriends complain to me about minor stuff , I just always say things like, "I know!" or "That stinks!" or "You're so right!" That's what girlfriends do for each other!

Big difference.

Disney specifically says, in writing, that pools are for the exclusive use of resorts guests. Restaurants are not.

Pools are part of the amenities included in the room rate for your resort. Restaurants are an independent cost center.

yes, but wouldn't you be upset if you went to eat at your resort restaurant but had to wait forever because non-resort people were there. Or when you leave to go to the parks but you had to wait three busses because the restaurants were so crowded and everyone wanted to get to the park in time for a parade, fireworks, {insert event here}. I would assume some people pick their hotels because of the restaurants that they have just as some people pick hotels because of the pool. I know when I was choosing I looked to see what may be the funnest pool for the kids. Other may pick based on gourmet. So even though restaurants are a seperate thing, I think they still come into play somewhat.

Also, going back to wristband and having to pay for lost ones. I know after the 3rd or 4th time my 2 year old got hers off and lost it somewhere, I would not be very happy with her! Is that any way to be enjoying a family vacation? BTW, I don't have a 2year old, I was just making a point LOL

Not really......what I'm saying is that I respect what is might seem minor to me but what is bothering people I care about. I might not get exactly why something is a big deal - but I know that they really don't want to hear that I think what is bothering them is trivial.

I know that they want me to be there for them - hey, I expect the same from them. What's a few, "I know! I wouldn't put up with that for a second!"s among friends?
