Wk of Oct 1--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

OK, I'm sure you all are getting sick of my posts, but I needed to give my training update. I had my LR yesterday - MfM called for 9 miles. Around 6:30am I went to my favorite park to run along the Genesee River into downtown Rochester. I had a zen-like moment on the trail that I have to share. At one point about 2.5 miles into my run the trail is not right next to the river and you're in among a canopy of trees. The trail then comes out of the trees, and turns to put you right along the river. The sun was rising, and the sky was a beautiful shade of what my mom always called sky blue pink. The river was wide and still, pink sky reflecting off of it, the city skyline was stretched out in front of me, and on the river was a log with 4 geese and a heron all sitting there. The sight actually gave me goosebumps, and I thought "yes, this is what I'm out here for."

I did my usual 9R/1W pace, and my Garmin said I ran 9.22 miles in 1:40:00 min or 10:51 mpm pace. However, I know that can't be correct. Here's my splits:

Mile 1: 10:10
Mile 2: 11:06
Mile 3: 10:07
Mile 4: 14:57 :confused3 Couldn't be right - I wasn't walking.
Mile 5: 10:59
Mile 6: 10:19
Mile 7: 9:53
Mile 8: 10:14
Mile 9: 10:05

When I got home, I mapped my route on the USATF map a route site, and it came out that I ran 10 MILES not 9. Whoa, that matches the farthest I've ever run, and if I did run 10 miles I was at a solid 10 mpm pace the whole time.

Now, here's the bad news. My left calf is killing me. It's a dull ache, right in the middle of the calf, and I'm walking with a limp. It didn't really bother me on the run except when I would start running again after the 1 min walking breaks. The calf has been sore for at a couple of weeks now, and I always thought it was just tightness in the muscle. But this is definitely not muscle tightness. I'm trying to ice it as much as I can, I'm popping a lot of Allieve too. I hope it goes away because I don't want it to alter my plans of running the Niagara Fallsview 1/2 marathon in 3 weeks. I also don't want my DW to see me limping around - especially when I was just planning on popping the news that I'm planning on running the WDW Full Marathon. I feel good that I ran 10 miles, and I just need to get this muscle soreness under control. OK, I'm off to do some more icing now.

MickeySP - I asked alot of questions about crazy toenail problems back in June. Long story, short - mine is due to the way my foot hyper flexes. So, my second toenails on each foot have been purple for months. Actually, I first lost one of the toenails. But once that one toenail grew back, it's also been purple since. :rotfl: At first it freaked me out, but now it's not a big deal. It's like a badge of honor for putting in all these miles!

Dave - pixiedust: for your calf! And they have a Niagara Falls 1/2? Oh boy - I've been wanting to bring Chad there someday. He's never been, and it's been about 10 years since I went. I think I need to make a list of races I'd like to do, and what time of year they do them.

OK, so after reading all of your posts I suddenly feel overwhelmed!!! I signed up for the full marathon, cause if I want to do something I CAN and WILL do it...but I want to make sure that I do not hurt myself in the process. OK here is a little about me and my story...

In February 2006 I started my weight loss journey...weighing in at 208lbs...Iknow get back up off the floor... :rotfl2: ...anyway, at that time I was not a runner, walker, or anything in between...I think they called me a couch potato...yeah that was the right term for me...so I decided that I was going to do the Minnie Marathon, I really don't know why I decided to do it, I guess I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. So I started training...not training like you guys are doing, I never read any books, I just kinda made up my own training, which was just walking every day. I figured if I could at least walk 3 miles a day, then I would be able to do the 15k. I had lost about 18lbs before the 15k approached. The funny thing about it was that while "training" I wanted to run soooo bad but for some reason I cannot do it...I get about 1/4 of a mile and I feel like my chest is going to explode...I see peopple running all around me, and it upsets me so much becuase I WANT to b a runner...now let me say that I do have exercise induced asmtha. So have any of you started off this way, and how in the world do I overcome this...is it even possible??? Oh and I am now down to 171lbs...but I plan on being about 145 before the full. Right now I am training for the full, and I just printed out a walking training schedule. Any advice would be greatly appriciated!!!! THANKS A MILLION!!!

Michelle - The Minnie was my first race also. I used Hal Higdon's training plan for that race and it went well. I also trained for the DL 1/2 using his plan. This time around, I am going to use John Bingham's Marathoning For Mortals plan. I love John's books! I also saw him speak at the DL Expo, and he was even funnier in person. So, when people here mention "MfM" you'll now know what they mean. In fact, my training for the WDW 1/2 starts today.

I have been at this since January, and I still cannot run for more than 1-2 mins. at a time. And I have tried! I am going to blame it on my asthma, although I never feel like I can't breathe. :teeth: It's my excuse & I am sticking with it!

You know what though? I don't want to run through Disney - I want to see & enjoy everything! :rotfl:
(case in point - see my DL race report!)

When I run I feel like my chest is going to explode...like is there a breaking point where it stops feeling like that...like if I just run for another say 30 seconds will that feeling go away and I will be able to keep running???

BTW I never in a million years thought I would hear myself say that I WANT to be a runner... :goodvibes

The results are up. My chip time is the same as my clock time and I started at the very back of the pack :confused3

Anyway, 2:52 (13:09 pace). 87/88 division and 907/911 overall. I came so close to claiming my DLF!!!!!!!!!

I think I will spend some time back in the pool, there's a bit of sciatica pain that shouldn't linger past morning :sad2:

Michelle...have you seen your doctor? Chest pain, (particularly the 'exploding' variety), needs to be checked out before you push too far.

Welcome to the racing addiction support group ;) ! I think many of us can relate to your experience. If you had asked me to run anywhere 2 years ago, I would've told you I'd only do it if something big and scary was chasing me ;) Now it makes me crazy that I'm not running farther and faster (though it's certainly farther and faster than last year :) )

Congrats on your wt loss!

That brings to mind an interesting question. How much have we all lost collectively? I'm at 28 to 29lbs, depending on what I ate the night before :rolleyes1 Anyone else want to add their weight loss to the WISH team total?

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Jodi - I missed your post earlier listing your 5K time. Sub 10 min miles!!!! Whoo hoooo!!! That is awesome. WTG!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 When is your half marathon in Hartford?

Thanks Dave :goodvibes My half marathon in Hartford is October 14th! Looking forward to it! It is supposed to be a relatively flat course, so it shouldn't be too bad.

I'm running the 1/2 marathon at Niagara Falls on Oct. 22nd, and I was wondering if we'll be running on the same day.
I will actually be running a 4 mile race, while you are doing the 1/2. I'm doing the Great Pumpkin Classic in Trumbull.....this one is supposed to be very hilly but I'm up for it! how bad can 4 miles be? I already did 11 miles with a bunch of hills.

So Dave - Did you check out the course for Niagra? what is it like? Is there a Web site? I'd love to take a look, isn't there someone else on the board that is doing the same race (AmyBeth?)

No, I haven't broken the news to DW yet. I'm still not sure she's going to be excited about the news. Maybe I'm building it up too much in my mind, but I think she's going to worry about the money involved in the trip. Although, I've already saved up the vast majority of it. We'll see how it goes
Oh - I think things will be fine with your wife, I'm sure she will be really touched with how much you really put into the trip.

I was very nervous when breaking the news to my DH, but things went great....and I don't know if you guys recall but up to this point he thought I was only doing the marathon at Disney.

Once I had the little party for him -- he immediately got excited.....his only question was "Are you doing the Goofy Challenge?" So, I fessed up about that :goodvibes.....He is my biggest cheerleader, I'm sure it will be the same for your wife!

The timing sounds perfect though....I can't wait to hear how it goes.

Wasn't Denny's half this weekend, too? Denny, where are ya? How'd it go?

I actually have an appointment on Oct 3rd...I want to make sure everything is ok before I really get into training, I am at a loss of 36.8 so far. Congrats on your loss too!!!! :thumbsup2

Hi Everyone,

My attempt once again, to get back on track with everyone on the team….Unfortunately, I don’t have anything new to report….the past couple of days I’ve felt a little under the weather and didn’t get any training done but I am feeling better and hope to get something done today…..even if it is just hopping on the threadmill to do my work.

Sunny, Kristi – Congrats on completing the Applefest Half! :woohoo:

OK, I'll buy those plane tickets. The bod and me have made up
Yeahh….Sunny! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Jen – The Rumproast looks like a lot of fun! Love the medal – Congrats Jen

Weird things like this have been happening with my Garmin too! That happened to me last weekend on my 11 mile run.

Dave – :wizard: :wizard: for your calf

That brings to mind an interesting question. How much have we all lost collectively?

25- 28 pounds lost over here!

Judy - How was your 5k?

Good morning all!!!!

Judy-- Oh yes, the full in '08!! Dream big, right?? ;) :thumbsup2

Cam-- I LOVE Spinning class. It'd been something I had been wanting to do for the longest time and I'm finally making myself try it. It is a killer cardio workout-- but I feel like it's great crosstraining. My brother is on the Maryland state HS championship team... he kinda makes me ill (kidding) :teeth: He ran a 4:48 mile preseason this year.... as a sophomore. :faint:

Kristi-- Love those pics!!!

Sunny-- Fantastic job!!!! :thumbsup2 Glad to hear that you and your body have made up with one another.

Jen-- Great race!! Was there seriously beef at the end of the course?? :confused3

Dave-- Great long run! I've been occasionally having weird Garmin issues lately too, especially when it's overcast. I've been doing Ok for the last couple weeks, so I need to keep my fingers crossed. Sorry to hear about the calf. Are you stretching well before and after you run? You may also want to make sure that your shoes are still in good condition as that could be the source of the problem too....

Michelle-- :welcome: No need to feel overwhelmed! (At least not with us!) The whole training/racing thing is a bit overwheleming at first, but if you have any questions, there are a bunch of "vets" here who might be able to help. I would encourage you to talk to your doctor about your shortness of breath concerns before you get deep into training.

No running for me this weekend :guilty: :guilty: I am officially sick. :guilty: It's just a head cold, but bad enough that I know an 11 miler today would be a mistake. I have "one of those" weeks coming up and I just can't be sick. Since it's now officially October, I really need to rededicate mayself to training. I haven't had a solid week since I started "official' training and I really need one as a confidence booster. I actually really need to have a good week with everything... work, school, training, etc. I'm letting too much go by the wayside and I'm procrastinating too much.

Well, I better dash!
Happy training all!

Mel! That is a great idea! We can post the weight loss and add it all up! I have lost about 30lbs sense goofy 06...so my siggie has me about 30 lbs heavier than I am now....I am now about 110lbs  Not trying to loose weight anymore though.....I eat like a COW!

Michelle - a big :welcome: ! Yes, go see a doctor to get that checked. After you find out everything is fine, you may need to slow the pace down a bit....run 1 walk 3 or whatever run/walk combo you want to do.

I am tired so I need to nap b/4 I dance tonight! :dance3:

THe Rump Roast run is part of a festival called Beef A Rama. It is a city wide rump roast cook off. So up and down the streets were people BBQing their beef. The judging was at 12:15, then a parade of Beef, then you could sample. My kids sugar levels were wearing off, so we didn't stay for the beef. But they had lots of freebie samples of almost everything while the beed was cooking, bands playing and a craft show (non of this during the run tho). The run was peaceful through the woods and along the lake.

Dave - My 5K was a zen like moment also. It was one of the most beautiful runs I have ever had!!!

Mel - I have lost 31 pounds so far, with another 35-40 that I would like to lose.

Michele - I had some major breathing problems and chest pain this summer and relunctantly went to the doctor. Found out I have exercise induced asthma. It's worth getting it checked out.

Hi Michelle,

Running with asthma can definitely be done, after you've been cleared by your doctor. I was diagnosed with sports induced asthma last summer. This is after years of being a total jock. (Aunt Liz, the one who plays football, soccer, etc, at all the family functions ) I went from pacing my daughter during her pre-season cross country runs, to not being able to run 100 yards or walk up the stairs at work, all in a week. At first I thought I had a cold or had slacked off on my training :confused3 . I finally went to the doctor, who scheduled me for a pulmonary function test. He gave me a breathing treatment and an inhaler. He never said I couldn't run, just to take it easy, but I pretty much scared myself out of running for several months. Not good, especially as I just paid the entry fee for the DL half

In April, I started off slowly, to reassure myself that I could make it around the block. I moved on to running/walking, then to all running, with gradual increases in the distance. I never had chest pain, but I definitely had to learn to regulate my breathing and to set reasonable goals for myself. I've only had two breathing treatments all year, neither of them after running. I scheduled a last minute check up before the DL to make sure I was good to go. (Hint: never wash down sports beans with gatorade  ) I ran just fine. Your doctor should be able to answer all of your questions and alleviate any fears that you might have because lots of professional athletes have asthma.

Good Luck on your training! :cheer2:

I am def going to get that checked out...have an appointment on the 3rd. I long time ago I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma, but maybe it has gotten worse, but like I said I will get the ok from DR before doing anything crazy.

OK, according to my training schedule I was to do 7 miles today. So I tried to do the walk 4/run 1 and that worked for about the first 2 miles, then I couldn't run anymore-I figured I could try adding more walk/run miles as I go on once ok'd by dr..., but DH and I finished in 1:41 which isn't great but if I can get to 14 minute miles I will be estatic!!!

oh, and thanks for all the advice!!!!! :goodvibes

Total WISH weight loss so far: 154.8 lbs!

Sorry for the confusion...this isn't just me. I'm fighting to breakthrough 30lbs. This is the total for everyone that's posted their wt loss so far. If I remember correctly, Lisa SP has lost about 150-160lbs of her own though. And I believe Sunny's in the 90s somewhere.

Hey all - oh I had a lazy weekend. got up Saturday intending to run 2 hours - did 45 minutes at the gym instead. Got up Sunday intending to run 2 hours - forced myself to go out for 30 minutes - which did turn into an hour - then returned with a painful kneecap. This is not good, my next half is Oct 29 - and now it's flooding outside which may mean todays hour ends up being spent on the sofa as well. Ooops!

Sunny: yippeee for you, let's hope it's the start of getting back to normal (though when running 21km was ever defined as normal I'm not sure).

Michelle: Not sure I'd ever have described my pain as explosive, but I started getting chest pains while running last year and it was my asthma - actually using my orange inhaler like I'm supposed to sorted it out though. If it isn't that with you, it's probably just that you're trying to run too fast to start with.

Well that's it for me today, got waay to much work to do. Helen

Hi Guys!!!

GARMIN ISSUES!!!! YES....mine has had a mind of its own lately. Mel...the same thing happened to me. Ran the SAME loop I always run and it was off by as much as .20 miles one time....and has really been erratic for over a week now. It's very annoying LOL! I wonder if there really is something going on??? As for calculating pace...it's been WAY off...showing 20 mpm when I'm clearly running quickly :confused3 . I'm glad mine isn't the only one...I thought it was dying on me!

Sunny: :grouphug: :cheer2: Congratulations on the Apple Fest Run. OMG...what a huge victory for you. I know the time isn't what you did last year...but it truly was an effort worthy of a gold medal in my opinion. I've been running with pain that isn't even CLOSE to what you have to deal with and I know how hard that can be. The frustration of injury...particularly when it keeps us from doing that which we NEED and LOVE to do (aka running)....can be soooo mentally difficult. You really are an inspiration to me. I was feeling very sorry for myself yesterday....and when I read that you completed the Applefest run...I instantly realized that with determination...anything is possible. THANKS SUNNY :grouphug: . And again....a big huge congrats on an incredible run!!!!!! Hope you're feeling ok today!

Mel: I believe I've lost 10 lbs since getting serious about exercise and running...depends on the day though ;). LOL! So that puts us up to 164.8!

Jen: :cheer2: SUPER EFFORT on the Rump Roast Run! That's sooo cool...glad you had a great experience.

Kevin: Some get well Pixie Dust for you!! :( Sorry to hear you are ill. I know how you feel about wanting a good week of training under your belt. It's been exactly 3 weeks since I've been able to get a full week of training in....mentally that is really hard....I need a confidence booster myself. I hope you get well really quickly....and GOOD FOR YOU for listening to your body and not pushing that 11 mile run. It would have definitely been a bad idea and made you even sicker! Your pace has been outstanding lately...you'll be back at it in no time. Good luck with your super busy week!!!

Dave: :( I'm so sorry about your calf issues! It's soooo frustrating to have to deal with injuries at this point. But I bet with a little rest you'll be able to resolve it. I wouldn't hesitate to see a doctor though soon...just so you can get some answers and work on getting it better. Sending you some good vibes that your leg feels better REALLY FAST. And hey....sore leg and all you had a GREAT long run yesterday! :goodvibes

Well......my doctor gave me the okay to get out there and run yesterday. I was supposed to cut my distance back to 7 miles (foregoing the scheduled 9) and cut my speed back to 10 mpm. However.....I started out instantly with pain :guilty: and had the worst run of my life. I barely made it to 4 miles and had to quit. The first time I've ever had to throw in the towel during a run. I was a good 2 miles deep into the woods on a rail trail....which meant limping back to the parking lot...crying of course out of pure frustration....and driving myself back home. I know that I have not yet had enough meds in my system...they do take some time to work properly. And my orthotics aren't made yet. AND I have not yet gone for physical therapy (that appointment is next week). While I have been given clearance to run...I just hope I actually CAN run. It felt like I was experiencing nerve pain shooting up from my ankle with each strike of my right foot. I can take some pain...heck I'd take a decent amount....but that was just not working for me yesterday  . Of course...seeing what Sunny accomplished....while dealing with a great deal more pain....made me realize that I can do this. Things just take time, patience and perserverence.

Soooo ..... tomorrow I'll head back out there and hope for the best :teeth: .

Have a great week of training everyone!!!! :thumbsup2
