Wk of May 6--WISH Walking/Running Club

HockeyGirl/Laurie :woohoo: :yay: DS' (and dh) played hockey - it gets in the blood - I should cyberly introduce you to HockeyKat over on Wish main board "Disappearing Peeps: She just started playing hockey again - T and Th I think - I had to look at your siggy twice thinking Kat came over here!!

GatorPhipps ok, I'll admit it... :rotfl: you made me laugh!! Thank you! Dh is here in person cheering me, telling me to expect drawbacks, and pain (not serious pain, just mild discomfort) and the "Peeps" thread I mention (we're trying to lose weight, and are supporting each other) I've often posted I'm the problem, way too much negative self talk - its been a long time building, so it may take some getting used to - being positive...

I think I'm going to look into a trainer to work on Xtraining stuff - getting stronger seems a necessity!!

Christa Gator- as long as you don't go too hard 16 should be fine if 13-14 is not a problem.

Dona- welcome and congrats on an early diagnosis and doing well now. I forget sometimes that there are happy stories too and not everyone is stage 4.

Mel/Chimera- racing for a charity: many of us are doing it anyway.

I'm doing Ironman Lake Placid w/ a group called Race4Kids that is raising money for the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario. My coach's 3 yo cute as a button little girl was diagnosed w/ ALL(acute lymphocytic leukemia) a month after her second birthday. She's 1 treatment shy of only having 1 year of chemo left but was neutropenic and missed this month's treatment. BTW, the link for donating is in my signature:)

Then the day after IM LP is the recommitment date for the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco w/ the Purple People aka Team in Training. Mom(NYcpa), Erin(Stitch_lover_Sith), and I all signed up for that last week. So we'll do that race and then the following weekend is ToT.

So I think that I have my hands full w/ fundraising, training, and doing rotations. Actually all I've been doing so far is training and clinicals so I really need to get going on my fundraising since Ironman Lake Placid is only 73 days away.

Training- yep, been doing some. Haven't done any events since Marathon weekend but that will change w/ the FL 70.3 race May 20th. Not tapering for this race as you can only taper successfully a few times a year and it's more impt to save it for the two Ironman races themselves so we'll see how it goes. This is scheduled to be a 16 hr 15 min training week but I have a nasty tendency of missing an hour or two each week. Tonight's run was 7 miles in 1:02, swam 3500 m and biked a hilly 20.5 miles yesterday.

Please visit the WISH hat order thread Thank you.

Lynne J

HM - FOrgot to say welcome back!!

Mel - Great ideas! Must think it over a bit.

Laurie - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

Thanks Lynne on the hat orders - I cut and pasted and emailed it to dh - hopefully he'll follow my instructions in including my Dis name with our order!!

I guess I'm geekish, because I'm excited about getting a WISH hat!! :yay:

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

I had my first run yesterday since the Flying Pig 1/2. I did 2.1 miles with DD6 princess: while DD9 princess: was in Brownies. DD6 princess: did great. I was glad to be running her pace, and didn't feel like going too much faster at all (we did 18:30 mpm). DD6 princess: is really excited about the 5K. I can't wait to run it with her. I'm supposed to run with DD9 princess: tonight while DD6 princess: is at Daisies.

Jen- I think I'm going to get a couple of trophies for the princesses, and have them engraved with First 5K, the name of the race, and the date. Yes, my princesses 5K is the same day as your Half Marathon in Green Bay. We'll be out there running together.

Dona- Welcome to the team!!! Wow, what a story. Congratulations on making it through the chemotherapy. You've already completed one marathon. You can always talk running/walking with us.

Vic- Travel safely. Have a great weekend down at WDW. Hope your foot is OK. Let us know what the doctor says.

Mel- Good luck on getting some rest and letting your foot heal. Hope it's doing OK. Mel, I also liked the idea of inviting the DLF to join the group. I also liked Sunny's idea of supporting a charity. Colleen's idea of pace groups was genius for the marathon, and it made my race. Right now, I'm not sure how I want the WISH team to evolve. It's kind of grown organically right now. I'd love to see it grow further, but I think with work, family, and all, I'm participating to my maximum level. I'd love to be a pacer for a half marathon group, but I'd also love to try for a 4 hour full marathon. Plus, I'm not even sure if I can go to Disney this year. I think it's great to think about how we can grow though. I like the idea of racing for charity, but I know I'm very, very bad about fund raising. I'm just too introverted to ask people for money.

Andrew- Great week of training!

Christa- I think you can do 16 miles this weekend. What's your weekly mileage? If you're doing 13-14 miles comfortably, then 16 miles is only 2 miles further than 14. I bet you're running at least 20 miles/week (and probably a lot more), and the 2 mile bump is only 10%.

Laurie- Congratulations on winning your hockey league. WTG! Did you get a big cup that you can skate around the rink with? Go Sabres!!!

Martha- I'm kindof in the same boat as you. Now that the Flying Pig is past, I'm struggling to figure out what to do next. I seem to run at least one race a month. But I tell you, it's such a difference to run with the WISH team versus running a local race by myself. Here I finish the race near the end, stretch, turn around, hop in my car and go. I'm going to try to join in some of the local workout groups to see if I can make some local running friends.

Lynne- It's great to see you posting again!

Morning team. I've got my final Women can Run clinic tonight. They're setting up a mock 5K with other clinics, to get us ready for Saturday. After therace on Sat. I'm probably going to get the running blues. It's been so much fun training for the Minnie. And then the bunch of women in the clinic have been so great and inspiring---don't know what I'll do come Monday, when I'll be out there again by myself.

Carrie--Nope,not running the Fox Cities this year--We're shooting for the Akron Marathon-mainly b/c DH"s family lives 15min away and we'll have free babysitters.

Have a great day all!

Dona - Welcome! You can always talk running with this crowd. You have accomplished so much already - it will be great to be part of your team when you cross the finish line in January.

Laurie - Congratulations on the league championship!

Dave - I know what you mean about local races. I hate crossing the finish line alone and going home. That's one of the reasons I'm joining the Galloway group this weekend. When I went to the clinic last Saturday, most of them knew each other, and I thought it would be so great to have local running friends too! Just hope they don't think I'm too weird when I talk about my WISH buddies! I think I'll leave out the fact that I haven't met most of them...

FINALLY made it up this morning to hit the TM. Did 3 miles, but didn't push too hard. Have had a migraine for 8 of the last 10 mornings (fortunately drugs have gotten rid of them so I've been able to function), but it's always hard to run the first time after that episode. I was 30 minutes into the run before I felt like I actually liked running, and by then I was almost done!

Have a great day!

Jackie

OK guys! I am going to try 16 this weekend (probably tomorrow) at a slower pace b/4 I break the news to DH that I want to sign up for the GFMM! He may nix it all together b/c this free sport is expensive.
Dave, to answer you, I do 20 to 30 mile a week and bike. How fun to run with your DDs!
WOW Lynne! You have lots on your plate! In my mind, I am thinking about the 1/2 Ironman in FL next year.....Scarrrrrry! DH wants to go down to WDW in May 08, so I thought tacking on a race would be fun!

I am getting a group of insane newly running buddies together to run a trail relay in October. If we get 5, we will do the 26.2. If we get 8 we will do the 40. I am planning on running the whole race while they change up on each leg!:scared1: I am excited and they are too. I think it will be fun to have fresh legs every 6 miles to encourage me! They think I am doing it so we can have a fun team thing...but really I am doing it so I don't have to run 40 miles by myself. Nah, JK! Some of the not so new runners will be Bree and SIS. Bree can use it as a training run for WDW!

Morning!

Sunny- :wizard: for your pain. Hope you get some relief soon.

Angie- That ring tradition sounds cool. I know several engineers and none of them have one or at least they don't wear it. I'll have to ask them.

Dave- Best wishes for your DD's run. I think that's the same weekend my own princess: does her 5K (May 20).

Laurie-:cheer2: Yeah Team!

Dona- Welcome! Your story is so inspiring! I do have to ask are you keeping the trip AND your training a secret? I just don't know how I could keep the training part secret. That would be harder than what you've already been through. Best wishes!

Mel- I like the idea of pace groups.

Not much running happening here this week. Got a cough that comes on worse when I start breathing hard. I've been able to do walking and I'm going to try XT on a bike at the Y this afternoon.

Have a great day!
Kiena

In moments of ambition, I wonder if we could do more. Sunny brought up supporting a charity last year. I still think that's a fabulous idea. I like the Team N Training model, but there are a few things that have kept me from participating that I would do differently (the minimum donation is one). I love how they have coaches for new members. I thought Colleen's pace group idea was fabulous and think it would be really cool if we continue and maybe have some folks that would do the half as a coach/pacer for our new runners/walkers.

I also thought Carrie's comment about inviting the DLF lady to be a WISH team member was pretty cool. I was thinking it would be neat to give one of our shirts to the DLF finisher at some of the races or maybe carry some business type cards with our team 'motto' and an invitation to the DIS.

I would also be very content not fixing anything that isn't broken. I think the team has evolved into something pretty special on its own and I wouldn't want to change that. If y'all feel leaving things alone and letting nature take its course is best, that would be cool too.

So...after all that...my question to all of you...what do you want from your WISH team?

Mel-- I setup an account at firstgiving last year:

http://www.firstgiving.com/WISHteam

Since at the time no one was really ready to commit to a group charity, I started it with my own idea. Since it's already there, we could collaborate on a charity and make it into something big. I know we could do it. I am totally in agreement with you about TnT and the AVON Breast Cancer walks... I could never commit to raising 2grand or more. But if our group just raised whatever we could it would be more than nothing. Every year we are a bigger presence on the field. People are getting to know us.

As for organization. I'm afraid we probably do need some. A "free for all" group can only grow so large before things start to get messy. I've been a little concerned about our logo for that very reason. Having come from a professional graphic design background I know things can get ugly real quick without notice. Please don't take that as an insult to our WISH Team. We are awsome! We want to stay awsome! Let's just be aware of possible pit-falls that could come our way.

Sunny

Hi Everyone,

Dona: Welcome and lots of luck to you. What a great plan to surprise the family with a trip.

Big Vic: Sorry about the foot injury. Hope it doesn't hinder your trip to see Mickey.

Chimera: Good luck with the foot pain. You should definately rest, you've earned it, but if you'd rather pursue the shoe therapy I understand that too.

Steve & Krista: Have a safe trip. Enjoy!

Andrew: Good job with training. It's great that you and your DW can train together. Having great weather is definately a motivator.

Christa: Good job with the ab workout. I wouldn't seem as if a 3:45 marathon was out of the range of possibility for you. Especially if you're planning 40 mile runs!! 26.2 will seem like a sprint in comparison.

Laurie: Congrats on your hockey championship.

Martha: I understand the "at loose ends" feeling. Since my race 2 weeks ago I feel a bit unmotivated. I had to look thru the race calendar and pick another race to think about. I'm going to run the Timlin 5K in Hopkinton on June 16th, if you're interested in joining me. It supports ALS research and they promise to have some of the Red Sox there.

Lynne: Good for you for getting your training in with your busy schedule. I looked up the LP IM and noticed it's a FULL tri. You mention it so casually as if it's something people do every day. Have you done a Full tri before? Best of luck to you.

Jackie: Good job on training despite the headaches.

Kiena: Hope you feel better.

I ran 3.5 mi yesterday and my quad felt good. I was surprised it healed so quickly since it was really hurting on Monday. Maybe I'm just a baby.

I've gotten in to a good routine with my running and I've started to eat healthier and have noticed some downward movement on my scale, so I'm ready to add some strength training into my routine. I'm mentioning it here in hopes that I'll actually do it if I tell you about it. We'll see.

Have a great day everyone.

Cindy

I think it would be great if we chose our charity to be the one that is helping educate against childhood obesity. I don't know the name off hand, but I know there was a relay group that set out the day after the Boston Marathon to run to Florida for this cause.

Just a thought,
Sunny

Hi everyone :yay:

Inspired by the stories of the many Wishers I got out on the road again last night. I would love to somehow "wog" chicago with the group in August but we'll see.......

My hip/sciatica didn't care for the spurts of jog and this morning I'm definitely feeling it but I'm hoping that stretching along with "gettting out there" will help. I managed 3 - 15min miles at mostly walk which I know is slow but I did it :cool1:

Oh btw - on the skirts - I own the gymgirl in smooch/black with the smooch v-neck tech shirt and took it out for the 1st outside spin last night. Once the body heat built up the shorts under the skirt stayed put and the pocket on the leg for the cell/mp3 (which is what i use - LG8600) worked fab!!!! I need to check out the specials because I think I'm a convert!

Mel - Personally I could never even handle asking peeps for my son's school fundraisers. So I wouldn't be up for that portion.

WISHing everyone the best!!!!!!!!!

P.S. - Guess what....... my MBA commencement is this weekend   I still have one class and a thesis left but will finish in August :cool1: Can you tell I'm excited :yay: :rolleyes1

Sunny - I'm still on the fence eregarding the charities, but if I were to pick one, I think childhood obesity does fit best here.

Stephanie - Just have to tell you that I about died when our mutual friend wrote me saying,"You didn't by any chance run with nucpharm?" Too funny!

Minnie - Did you get my stretches? SOunds like you have the same issue I do. I have a few more too. e-mail me at wtpcpc@sbcglobal.com if you want them.

Cindy - I am glad that it did not hurt today. Maybe the muscle just cramped up? That would hurt like crazy, but heal itself soon. Just glad that it's feeling better.

Dave - I love hearing about your dds' training!! SO cute. Glad you are having fun with this! What, when, where is there race?

Kiena - Keep an eye on that vocough. Coughs amke me nervous after having peneumonia and bronchitis fo ryears. :wizard:

Jackie - Good fo ryou for sticking it out even when it did not feel great!

Christa - That relay sounds fun! Good luck on teh 16-miler!

Mel - Good luck with your foot. WHile I like the shoe therapy idea, I'm thinking the pod may be better.

Lynne- Your posts make me so tired. :faint:

PT kicked my booty this am. Guess that's what it's supposed to do. :p Lots of new exercises and some I can do at home now. It seems to be working and hthey are working hard at getting me back to a pain free run. The fact that I went 4 to 5 miles before it started to hurt speakes volumes. ThaThey all loved my Minnie medal adn now I HAVE to bring in my Mickey next tiome. (Yeha, twist my arm.) ;)

First post-Minnie run scheduled for tonight. I'm tired from PT, but curious to see how I feel.

Just a quick drive-by as I continue to try to catch up at work and do all the other things that I've let go by the way-side over the past month.

First, the bad news -- I had a really rough time at the gym last night. Treadmill at 4.0 mph yielded outrageous shin splints for the first 10- 11 minutes. Then I kicked up the speed just to get a mile in under 15:00 and finished 1 mile in 14:30. Got off the TM and went to the bike. That was painful too -- hips and lower legs, mostly. I only did 15 minutes there, too. Then grocery shopping and home. After lots of food prep for dinner and today's lunch, I forced myself to do my balance ball stuff but the 100 crunches were uncomfortable and the 100 push ups were downright nearly impossible with the muscles in my upper arms vibrating. LOL! Okay, I'll get back to being able to do them easily and then I'll up the number!

Okay, here is my fabulous news. After 12 years and 3 months (I was diagnosed in February 1995 and my condition worsened after that), I was released this morning from my cardiologist's care. He was absolutely ecstatic with a picture perfect EKG, 110/70 BP, 70 pulse (IIRC) and "very impressive weight loss". When I told him the scale isn't moving much, he said I've lost a lot since last March and that I'd obviously converted fat to muscle because I was "so much smaller sitting there on that table compared to last year!" Even now, i am getting all teared up thinking about all that positive feedback. I showed him my Mickey medal and he was over the top, bragging to the 2 residents about how he'd literally feared for my life while I'd been treating with him and they thought my condition was uncurable and the prognosis wasn't good, and how thoughts of my condition now make him smile.

Oh, and on the marathon? When I told him I'd walked, not run, he said "oh yeah, I walked 26 miles before -- between 1986 and 1992!" LOL!!

I told him I do it all as part of a team that strives to get and stay fit through training for walking and running events and he said, "well, you can tell your team that I said you are one of its success stories!" :grouphug:

What a nice way to start my day! :)

Sorry about the stonker WO...but....WTG on the Docs appointment!   Cam you are amazing! Praise God for the great report! He is the God who heals (Rapha).

Hey all - Just a quick post. I did 45 minutes on the indoor track last night, while DD did gymnastics. The track is over the gymnastics studio, so as I jog by a certain section every once in awhile she will wave at me. It's pretty cute. Also, I haven't done any week day running in weeks because of my PF, so it felt great to finally be back on track.

Minnie - Glad to hear there was no ride up on the shorts/skirt. That is the main reason I have not ordered any yet. Oh, and I believe Pat will be walking the whole CDC in August, so don't think you have to run if you aren't ready. Since it is a John Bingham race, I would imagine there would be more walkers. Maybe Pat can chime in if she is here, she did it last year also.

Dave - Too Cool on the trophies. I wish you were my dad. Oh wait, we are pretty close in age so that won't work!!!!

So this weekend is Mothers Day and my girls are all excited because they have something planned. Then next week is my birthday. So I get double bonus in one week. Then at the end of the week is my marathon, so I hope it is a fabulous week for me and the 1/2 marathon gives me a PR (even tho I have only done one 1/2 marathon, so it should be too difficult to PR it)!!!!

Cam - YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I can't wait to see you in August and give you a GREAT BIG HUG!!!!

Cam that is beyond FABULOUS news! I am sooooo happy for you:cloud9: You are a walking miracle (and I do mean WALKING) I've told so many people about you. You are an amazing inspiration.

Carrie-- I'm glad you liked the childhood obesity idea. We're Inspired to Stay Healthy and inspire the next generation, too.

Just for clarification-- any fund raising idea would be totally voluntary and not in anyway a requirement of being part of WISH. I'm with Minnie, when my DS brings home those stupid school fundraisers I pay a fortune buying everything myself because I can't bring myself to ask someone! BUT, if someone should ask if we have a charity, maybe having a card to hand out with the website URL would be a good idea. Possibly our scream team signage could have the website? Just thoughts, don't want to panic anyone. Plus, if we did it through the firstgiving site, all funds raised are anonymous so no one gets any credit for being a great fund raiser!
