Wk of May 20--WISH Walking/Running Club

Happy Tuesday everyone! Went to strength training today--and she killed me! I bow down to ya'll that use the ball on a regular basis. Geez! The crunches and pushups were killers--and then we did some hamstring work with the ball and I almost died. I could really tell that I need to work on my hamstrings--balance out my legs a little.

Cam--WTG on the workout--you are a machine!!! So you're a heroes watcher?? Scott has been DVR'ing them from the Sci-Fi channel and we started watched from the beginning a couple of days ago. I have to admit, I thought it was going to be hokey, but I since have become hooked!

Judy--would try to save you on the ToT thread--but not sure I want the wrath of the Boogy man on me!:rotfl2:

Kim--Come and do both!;) But seriously, it would be great to see you whichever race you choose!

poppinspal--yep definitely normal--at least around these parts. Sorry to hear of the stomach upset.

Well, should get off here and get teh kiddos ready for nap time--also known as the golden hour here!

Hi Everyone,

Minnie: I hardly ever stretch before I run. I've heard that it's not a good idea to stretch cold muscles. The exception is that I do warm up my calves just a bit because that tends to me a problem area for me. Actually, instead of stretches I circle my feet around a few times before starting. Then I run my first mile slowly to get warmed up a bit. In theory I stretch afterwards, but usually it's 2 min. of stretching before I'm off to the next thing.

Leana: Sorry about the snow. Glad you got your run in despite the rain.

Jackie: Good job on getting out in the heat. A lot of firsts for you. Great job.

Vic: Good job on the weight workout.

Stephanie: Good job on getting the WO in.

Dave: Congrats on a speedy standard pace.

Poppinspal: Glad you're feeling better. It's great that you're motivated to get out there.

Renee: Good luck with your LR this weekend.

Craig: Did you see the article "Trick yourself Fit" in the March 07 RW? It has you do your LR at a quicker pace than LSD. I've often read long slow distance makes long slow runners. So this plan has you start out on your LR slow then pick up the pace throughout so by the last 2 miles you're running at 1/2 mar pace. I'm going to try this plan to train for a Fall 1/2 mar. I'll alternate LSD one week with the variable pace the following week. I've only done one run at the var. pace so far. My 8 mi LR yesterday started at 10:40 mpm and I ran the last 2 at 9:50. I'm still trying to figure out what range of paces I should be running, we'll see how it goes. Have a great trip.

Best WISHes to everyone.
Cindy

Stephanie -- I can't wait until the first season comes out on DVD -- each time I have watched any piece of an episode, I have been amazed at how detail-rich each scene is, especially when they show the paintings. It has been such a great time for Andy and me to watch it together -- he picks up on so many details! Oh, and thank you so much for the kudos on the workout. It never seems like enough -- especially when the dratted scale won't move!!!! [where is that scale-bashing smilie when I need him? ;) ]

Thanks Cindy

That makes lots of sense. You are doing the normal long run and fatiguing your body, then asking for a lot more in the last 2 miles. This must be another way to train your body to carry pace when tired, so when you step to the starting line and are fresh, the same pace feels like a cakewalk.

Good luck with that.

On our way to the airport in 50 minutes!!

In the words of Austin Powers: Ciao Baby!

Craig -- Have a great time! We will miss you and Martha!!! :grouphug:

Hi everyone-

I haven't run since Saturday but I am getting some great heart rate work outs. All 3 kids made it through their tournaments to the championship games. Its been very exciting. Luckily I have friends with blackberry's that could email my DH with the scores and highlights.

Poor hubby, its killing him to miss all this. He missed dd11's first unassisted double play, dd9's game winning grandslam, and dS7's first homerun and his game winning slide into homeplate with three men covering the plate. I can't even be jealous of his weekend trip to Paris.

I emailed Dh and told him that my friend Craig "needs" me to run the TOT with him in October. Funny, he didn't respond to that in his email. He is probably wondering "who is Craig and how should I respond to this?" I will let him ponder this for a couple days. (should I be cruella de wife or just cruella?) How did people survive overseas travel without email?

Just skimmed. FOrgive me. Benn another rough day. help has arrrived, though. Of course, she's not really help until I train her. Still trying to figrue out how that came to be my job.

Angie, Jen & MInnie - :grouphug: My pain is a lot better. We'll see how the run does tonight.

Minnie - I stretch before and after. My PT, and many poeple here, say it's best to do a 5-minute, very easy, warm up and then stretch. Silly, but mentally I do not do well with warm ups, so I don't. It is supposed to be best, though.

Hey, I forgot to mention this earlier. Today I had a meeting with the guy that got me into running. He ran the 1/2 marathon on Sunday also. Well yesterday he decided to get 13.1 tattooed on his ankle. It's pretty cool and oh so simple. His wife freaked out tho. I told him I am planning to run the WDW Full in January and you know what he said.... Jen, you would be my idol if you did that. Oh how sweet. He said that people like "us" are so much more inspiring than the elite runners because running is actually hard and a challenge. His wife has run full marathons in the past and has so much respect for people that "go the distance". That just made me so happy.

Also, getting 26.2 with Mickey Ears tattooed would be kind of sweet!

Jenn - The thought has crossed my mind that if/when I make it through the Goofy Challenge a 39.3 with a Goofy hat, right where I the bum spot on my ankle was, would be quite fitting. I think my mom would freak though!

Cool story Jen!!!!

Well, I did a little over a mile pain free. It was by no means bad when it started, but I walked hoe anyway. I think I should be able to r/W Saturday. We'll decide tomorrow. If it doean't hurt then, I'll go for it. Probably r/w at least on the uphill. I'll take it!:cool1:

Jen, I promised myself after the full in January that I would get a tattoo on my foot. I haven't gotten up the nerve yet!!

Okay, back to American Idol, will talk more tomorrow! :upsidedow

I am pretty much out of shape, getting old (44 next month!!!! :scared1: ) and need to drop 15 to 20 pounds. I have a weight tracker below... please kick me in the keester if you don't see any progress soon.

So... with all that in mind, my times aren't too bad.

I have run in 3 local 5K events (with Cam  ) here are my results:

Kelly's Logan House (8th) March 3, 2007 5K 27:36 8:53
3rd Salesianum DFRC March 25, 2007 5K 29:39 9:34
Saint Edmond's Academy May 13, 2007 5K 27:45 8:57

I am looking forward to having the opportunity to train this summer and running in the ToT with many of you and in Chicago with my fellow WISHERS!

Happy Training!

Christa - Awesome fantastic super-duper speedy time on the 5K!
Matt & Lynne - Great job at the Ironman!
Krista & Steve - Welcome back! Hope you had a fun time, in spite of the aching memories of the Marathon.
Jen - That's a neat story...and from the guy who got you into running no less. I think the Marathon Mickey Tattoo idea is pretty cool.
Stephanie - Good job with the balance ball workout. I am barely coordinated enough to look at one.
Leana - snow...Snow...SNOW?!? That's going to set me back in therapy. JK, but great job on the run! And the Goofy Tat would be a great way to cap it all off! (and motivate you to do it all over again!)
Carrie - Pixie dust for your back...hopefully the orthotic will work out for you.
Dave - Awesome job with your DD's this past weekend. You know, those trophies are something they are going to hold onto forever and show their children and grandchildren one day. You are such a positive role model for them, and a great dad!
Angie - How's work going? How's the move going? How's the back feeling? See you're getting in workouts, so hopefully your back decided to behave.
PatsFanJen - If there aren't many races in your area, make one for yourself. Set a date, train for it, go out on a trail/track/path that you know the distance on and go for it. The great thing is, you can pick out your own swag/bling and you know you can blow the competition away (but no trash talking, that might be wierd). Good luck!
Cindy - Great job on the LR.
Minnie - I would agree that if you DO stretch before a workout, make sure you warm up properly first. I have done both depending on how I feel...if I feel the need to loosen up, then I will warm up for about 5-7 minutes on a stationary bike, then stretch. But I always (well 95% of the time) will stretch after.
Shan - Great runs, hope your DH's knee is okay. Have a great time on the Cruise and at WDW.
Megan - Welcome to the Team. I am on the MFM Run/Walk Marathon Training plan (say that 10 times fast). I chose it because, well we had the book. At first I thought the time thing was like "Hey, what about miles and whatnot"...but the time thing works pretty well for me. I have a Timex Ironman watch that I can use the interval timer to beep me for my run/walk times. Downside is not being able to listen to music, but I could always look at my watch frequently....but for now getting my pace down, keeping my posture right, and listening to my breathing and footsteps is working well for me.
Kristi - That water park looks awesome! And there are two of them near me (well within a couple of hours anyway).
GoofyGuy - Strong work at the Relay for Life, but it's a real good thing you did not bottom out your sugars. That could have been a real bad day for you.
BigVic - Good to hear your foot is doing better.
Bill - Those cakes are awesome!
Maria - Great job on the LR!
Judy - I was there with you on the Gluttony Wagon this past weekend...but we were camping and how could anyone say no to a Hot Schmoe (no, Buzz, they're called s'mores).
Cecilia - Congrats to your children for their great games!
Jackie - That is sooo cool you ran into another WISHer at a local race! And great job with your running group...it's a Galloway group right?

Well I hope Kelley's DH is doing okay...anybody have any word on him? My own mother called me today to tell me she got clipped by a car Sunday while she was riding with a group, but she came out of that pretty well (nothing broken, no surgery...a sore shoulder the docs are going to MRI to see if there is any rotator cuff involvement)...but it got me thinking of Kelley's DH.

Yesterday my time out increased to 40 min at a 3/2 run/walk pace, and today was a 35 min. I am concentrating on keeping my pace even on the runs and making sure my walks don't turn into strolls or moseys...keeping them a brisk pace, but still walking. Tommorow is work and XT on the recumbent...I have really slacked off in the Weight Training dept...will have to get that worked into my schedule.

Happy Training everyone!

Got my 4 miler in tonight and it was AWESOME!!! I finished in 45:08 for an 11:17/mi pace. Let's compare that to last Tuesday's 4 miler in 48:23 and last Thursday's 4 miler in 46:41. Woo hoo! I will say that today's 4 mile course was A LOT flatter than what I ran in my neighborhood last week though.

Jen and Krista - group trip to the tattoo parlor after the marathon in January?? haha!

I thought you guys would like to hear about this story we are running on this morning's news:

AT A CLEVELAND MARATHON AND 10-K RUN... HUNDREDS OF RUNNERS TAKE A WRONG TURN. A PERSON DIRECTING RUNNERS GOT CONFUSED... WHEN A POLICE CAR PARKED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COURSE. 300 RUNNERS ENDED UP GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, ADDING TWO EXTRA MILES TO THE COURSE. ORGANIZERS SAY THE MISTAKE IS AN EMBARRASSMENT, BUT THEY'RE HAPPY THE RACE RAISED ABOUT HALF OF A MILLION DOLLARS FOR CHARITY.

Sorry for the caps, but that is how they put stories in the scripts!

Hi Everyone.

Cecilia: Glad the kids are doing so well in their tourneys. Sorry DH isn't there to enjoy it.

Jen/Leana/Krista: Good luck with those tattoos.

Carrie: Glad for your pain free run.

Howard: Welcome back. Good luck with the training. Glad finals are over. Lots of luck with the wt loss. You certainly have a great role model for that living with you.

Andrew: Glad your mother wasn't seriously hurt. Good job with training.

Leana: Nice run.

Kristi: Ugh. Can you imagine how annoying that would have been? Now all those people have to go change their tattoos to read 28.2.

Have a great day everyone.

Cindy

Jenn - The thought has crossed my mind that if/when I make it through the Goofy Challenge a 39.3 with a Goofy hat, right where I the bum spot on my ankle was, would be quite fitting. I think my mom would freak though!

Ok the running is painful enough and now you want to add a tatoo on to boot?!!:scared1:

Thank goodness I am too old for tatoos! However, I did get one of those black and white temporary tatoos the day after the WDW Marathon - a simple Mickey outline. I had them put it on the small of my back and he lasted for over 6 weeks back there. The girls in my sunday school class loved it, but a couple of the parents looked at me funny. Got to love a midlife crisis!

Howard - Do you purposely go out fast for your first mile? A little speed work before settling down into a rhythm? Your times look good, especially your 5k times but I am wondering if your over all time could improve if you paced yourself on the first mile. Not that I have any clue. Good Luck with the weight loss - stress adds pounds faster than anything!

Happy Training Everyone - Get out there and run!
Cecilia

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I didn't get to SWOG yesterday. I went down to the gym just as they were posting a sign saying the pool was closed. Oh well, I took a rest day. I did run this morning though: 5 miles in 48:45 min/9:03 mpm pace.

Here are my splits:
Mile 1: 9:16
Mile 2: 8:50
Mile 3: 9:12
Mile 4: 9:24
Mile 5: 8:36

My times were bouncing around a little, but I account that to the hills I had on my route. Miles 3 and 4 were pretty much uphill, and mile 5 was all downhill.

Krista- What did you and Steve think of AI last night? DW and I thought Jordan blew Blake out of the water.

Howard- Thanks for posting. Great to hear from you, and glad you survived your most recent semester. Hey, I'm also planning on doing the MCM in 08. Hopefully Colleen, Sara, and others will find some good places to meet up.

Carrie- Sorry about the Wings. I went through the same thing with the Sabres.

OK, I should get to work.

Okay, I'm caught up enough at work that I can finally talk a little bit. We're getting into our busy season at work, so don't be surprised if you only see me on here once a day rather than 50 times. :) I ran 3 miles on Monday, skipped last night because my IT band on my LEFT leg was aching. What??? :confused3 I'm thinking it was because I didn't stretch before the run like I normally do and I *may* have pushed it a *little* the first mile. I'm going to run tonight and see what happens.

Leana--I was all set to go to a tattoo parlor on January 8th to get my tat (the track and field symbol of a running shoe with wings), but I just couldn't do it.

Kristi--When I was running the marathon in January, I must have been running the outside a lot because my Garmin registered 27.2 miles. It was pretty discouraging to see 26.2 miles and still be in the UK in World Showcase!

Dave--I never posted about your daughter's 5K over the weekend, they did such an awesome job!!!! Please tell them how proud we are of them! My favorite pic was after the race and they were laying in the grass, I remember being so tired after my first 5K too. Too bad I was 26 and not 6!! Jordin blew Blake out of the water! She's amazing!!!

Christa--Congrats on your 5K!!! That's awesome that you placed. I'm on my way over to read your race report.

Jen--Congrats on your half marathon!! And congrats on meeting your goal! That rocks!!! :cheer2: How is your foot feeling?

Cecilia--And more congratulations on your 10K!! How exciting!

Tiffany--:grouphug: I hope your husband is feeling better. I had no idea that he was sick. You and your whole family are in my prayers. Please keep us updated!

Judy--So what did you do to tick all the ToT people off???? ;) ;)

Carrie--Here's some :wizard: for more pain-free runs!!!!

Lynne--I am in awe of you! You rocked the half Ironman!!! Stephen and I thought of you and Matt when we were down there last week. Unfortunately we left Saturday night, so we couldn't stay and cheer you on! Congratulations!!!

Matt--I didn't forget about you! Congrats on your half Ironman!!! Stay safe while you are deployed! And tell Cheryl to keep us posted!

Andrew--I hope your Mom is okay and not too shaken up! :wizard: for a "clean" MRI!! I was inches away from being clipped by a car a few weeks ago while I was running, it's a very scary thing!!

Melissa--How is the job and the new puppy doing?

:welcome: to all the new people!!!! And  to everyone I missed!!
