Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

OK, I guess I'm ahead of myself since the clocks go ahead tonight. But since many are at the Princess 1/2 this weekend, thought I'd start the weekly thread.

I see my cut and paste didn't come out the way the weekly thread usually starts. Sorry. I tried.

I am slowly getting back into the swing of things. I walked 2 miles today. Tomorrow I'm going to hit the track for a couple miles.

Happy training!

Terri

Terri, Thanks for getting us started this week.

I hope all those in events this weekend are enjoying.

It is raining here so nothing for me outside. Looks like I'll be doing indoor work.

Hi, do you mind if I join y'all? I started running again in early September 2008 after being away from it for almost ten years.

Since then, I have done two five milers, one 10k, and 2 5k's (one yesterday!) I plan to do the 2010 half. I am hoping for a time of under 2 1/2 hours.

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

:welcome:

Glad to have you! I'll be doing the 2010 half also, I'll be mostly walking it though.

Hope the Princess went well! My friend and I are going to try to do it next spring!

I did 8 miles in 1 hr 10 (8:45 pace). It was nice and easy. I have a question for all of you more experienced marathoners. My first half is in May and my long runs are at somewhere between an 8:30 and 9:00 mpm pace. What should I expect it to run it in? I was originally aiming for 1:55, but now I'm not sure. I usually run my 10ks and 5ks faster than my training pace, will the adreneline last through the half-marathon?

Jennifer

I am new to this site too. Started running May 2007. I finished my first half in Jan 2009 at the WDW Half. I finished in 2:53:54. My goal was to finish under 3hours. So I was very happy. :cool1: I did not know there were WISHers out there until that race when I saw all of you in those t shirts.
Next yr I would love to join u!:cheer2:

Terri: Thanks for starting the thread this week. It's good to read you're getting back into things. :cool1:

Lily: We're caught here in the rain, too, right before another cold spell. I love spring and how it taunts us. At least Saturday was beautiful!

Laurel: Welcome! :welcome: You've got a lot of experience under your belt, and I just know you're going to love the Disney event experience. What inspired your return to running, if you don't mind my asking?

Jennifer: I'm not an experienced marathoner at all, but I don't think you should expect to run a marathon at your short-race distance pace. If you can maintain your current SLD pace with longer runs (what's your long training distance going to be? You'll have a better sense of your time if you can do 12 or 14 before taper) and have a good race day, you will probably be able to run the race at somewhat faster than the 9:00 and maybe even the 8:30. (Wowsa!) However, your short distances will help you with speed on race day, as will that super core that both your instructor and I admire. In short, I think you're on target for a 1:55 or better but there's a lot of unknowns out there and so I wouldn't bank on doing the race signicantly faster than your easy run pace. I hope I don't sound like a downer--I think you'll do fine--there are just a lot of variables in moving up to a longer distance.

Cinder: Welcome :welcome: and congratulations on meeting your goal! Why wait to join us until then? Look around our site--we're a rabidly friendly bunch--and keep posting. WISH is like my second (less dysfunctional) family, and I'm sure you'll love it here.

Maura: I saved my response until this week's thread (see below), knowing you were enjoying yourself in Disney this weekend. I'm so glad to know someone of your discerning tastes likes diners, too. We haven't been to many here--just Pamela's (and that's a college diner, not the real thing). I'm now on a quest! :thumbsup2 I look forward to hearing your stories of the weekend, and any Michigan coolness you can think up.

As for me: Stonker run on Saturday, meh XT today. My core likes crunchy sweets not sweaty crunches. And don't get me started on pajama-bottom guy at the gym. Grrrrr.

But the weather here has been beautiful, if rainy, and so DOOD and I enjoyed a lot of outdoor time this weekend. It's not as if I'm so sweet that I melt. :rotfl2:

This is for Maura! Yeah, I'm a Michigander born and bred. Born in the upper LP, and grew up using the hand to indicate my hometown. (Lake City, near Cadillac). Did all the things you would expect growing up in that area--Mackinaw Island, Cherry Festival, snowshoeing. Moved to Fargo for jobs, then to Pgh. I'll have to think on some local fun to do and drop it into the conversation from time to time.

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

Mental Health Day

We all know that our mental-health days are just as important as our workouts, recovery days, and proper fueling. So, Monday's question for the 'Ohana mixer, which starts here on the team thread, is....

If you had an unexpected free day--no work or other obligations--and $20 to spend just on you, what would you do?

So please share those small indulgences that are essential to your mental well-being. Hopefully, we'll get new ideas and find kindred souls.

There are three little rules. Just because.

  1. You have to spend at least part of the $20 on you. No giving it away, no saving it for a rainy day, and no spending the $20 entirely on your beloved partner, cute kidlets, or BFF. You can spend time with these folks, of course, and some of the money. But the focus is on YOU and what you want to do.
  2. You can choose to work out, if you wish, or your mental health day can coincide with a recovery day.
  3. What you do on your mental health day has to reflect your everyday, local life. No "I just happened to be in Paris..." :rotfl2: You can imagine, however, that you have perfect weather.

As usual, full stories that are related to your mental-health day are welcome. Not to mention the odd digression! And you're always welcome to bring drinks, goodies, and profound thoughts on the meaning of life.

Hi Debra!

I'm going out of town Monday afternoon for a conference, so I'll answer your mental health day question now.

When I'm on a MH day I like to get my workout done early, come home and eat breakfast, get a nice hot shower and then in the afternoon head off to Barnes and Noble. I could spend hours in there looking through books, drinking Starbucks and having a lowfat piece of cake. Very relaxing and helps me recharge my batteries. :cloud9:

Cinderrunner:
Welcome! Congrats on meeting your goal. Don't wait till next year to join us. Jump in now! We're a friendly, although sometimes crazy, bunch.;)

Laurel:
Welcome to WISH!

Jennifer: I can only dream of running sub-9 minutes!

Lily: Hi! Bummer about being inside. We had a cloudy, but warm today here today!

I did 8 miles, Marcia went with the intermediate group for 6.

Now off to go sell more Girl Scout cookies with my daughters.

Hello, fellow WISHers. I would like to join this group. I am a brand new runner (actually, my training is still in the walking stages!), and I have signed up for the half in January.

Will someone assign me a team to join? I'm not quite sure how this works...

Also, will a new thread for the '10 half marathon be started? Or does each team have their own?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! :disrocks:

Debra, your not a downer, I just get confused with all the stuff I read. Some say you'll be faster than the long runs, some say that pace or slower. So I've kind of shot for the middle (the high end of my long run pace would translate to 1:57 the fast side would be 1:50). I'm sure it will continue to be refined as I get closer.

Tek224, Thanks for the compliment!

Today is my cross-training night so I'll report back later!
Can't wait to read those princess reports!
Jennifer

Terri: I have to confess, your mental-health day sounds just about perfect for me. DOOD and I have a Sunday ritual that involves exactly this, including the Barnes and Noble, except we also bring the NYTimes to read. I don't think we talk to each other the whole time, unless it's to point out an article. My drink of choice is boring, the tall nonfat latte. But they know exactly how I like it. :cloud9: Have a great time at your conference!

Jennifer: I'm just impressed that you made any sense of my response at all. I reread it this morning and it was nearly incomprehensible to me. Tired and rambling last night, I guess. I think your strategy for wanting to hit the middle of our LSD is spot on, btw, and think you can achieve that running pace. Some of the variables I didn't mention, though, are things that might be unexpected or stuff you can't train for. Here, I'm thinking of the bottlenecks at beginning or at water stops (depending on size of race). Or needing to make an unplanned blister or porta-potty stop. That kind of thing. I know that I had unexpected tummy troubles on my first 1/2 because I was traveling and had to change up my eating routine for the couple of days before the event. I hit my target pace when I was running....:rolleyes1

Like Terri said, though, you're really fast and think you can make up for those on race day. If I recall, you've got a pretty sharp improvement curve with your running? You've been shaving off a lot of time on your pace on all distances, right? :woohoo: So I think a sub-2:00 1/2 is doable for you--I'd envy you that if I weren't so happy for you--and think that should be your goal. Just don't knock yourself out if the race-day throws you a bit of a curve ball.

Jeff: Well, it certainly looks like Marcia had a great time with your intermediate group! Or maybe that's just your presence. :goodvibes And thanks for reminding me it's time to go stalking GS cookies.

Disney_Mommy: :welcome: Here's the link for joining a team. Just let Susie know you'd like to join a team--chances are you'll be placed with our newest team, the Rebel Alliance. So many of us attend the Disney marathon weekend, and it's not an inaugural event like the Princess, that we haven't tended to start a separate event thread. That doesn't mean there won't be lots of discussions going on as official training starts. The team threads, the weekly thread, threads that ask questions about training, gear, accommodations will all come up.

Joining a team and keeping up with the weekly thread are great ways to get to know people, find support, and have your questions answered, so I'm glad you decided to jump right in! :thumbsup2 There are many of us who used Disney as their motivation for their first event and are now hooked, so you're in good company. We have walkers, racewalkers, walk-runners, run-walkers, runners, bikers, triathletes, hand-crankers, and other assorted goofs! I think you'll like it here.

Thanks all for the warm welcome! Debra, I decided to get back into running because I was having a hard time getting rid of the extra baby weight after my DS was born. Running torches calories like nothing else I know, so that is what I decided to do! Little did I know that I would become addicted...

So if I had a free day, and $20, I'd have to get a pedicure. My feet don't look very pretty these days, because I have been running a lot.

Also, will a new thread for the '10 half marathon be started? Or does each team have their own?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! :disrocks:

Welcome to all the new folks!

No and yes to the thread question. This is the thread for the whole team for 2010. The smaller teams within WISH each have their own threads.

Back from Princess...it was a great weekend!

:welcome: Cinderrunner, lil mermaid, and disney_mommy! Welcome to the WISH team! disney_mommy - I put you with the Team Rebel Alliance! I'm sure you'll find lots of support there. :thumbsup2

I just wanted to pop in and say hello to everyone! I haven't been able to post as much as I would have liked lately. Darn work! ;) I've got to enjoy it while I can because I'm afraid I'll be joining the ranks of the unemployed at the end of May. :( (Darn budget cuts!!!)

Debra - pajama bottom guy at the gym? I think I missed something here. :rotfl2:

Hi Teri! - I just entered the lottery for the Nike Women's half this year. I didn't get picked last year. Maybe this will be the year for me! If not, maybe I can drown my disappointment at the Race for the Taste at Epcot. Hmmmm. That's sounding pretty good, actually! :teeth:

Jennifer/Teri - I can only dream of doing sub-13-minute runs. Ha!

Susie, thank you for the team and for introducing me on their thread. I appreciate it!

Escape/Teri/Debra, Thank you all for calling me fast! Sometimes a girl needs that ego boost!

This thread seems slow so far, I guess everyone's still at the princess.

I got in 4.5 miles today. It wasn't a great run. I was tired and hadn't eaten lunch and it just felt ugh. But I got through in normal pace in 39 minutes.

I'm getting new shoes this weekend and that always tends to brighten things up.

Jennifer

Hey everyone, have a great Wednesday.

8 1/4 miles in 1:16 and change.

See ya.
