Wk of Mar 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Sunny - lots of

OT - the doc. was stumped about my weird leg warmth thing going on. They are running crazy amounts of bloodwork on me (5 tubes!). And I get to have an echocardiogram next week. If they find nothing & it still keeps happening, I get to go to a neurologist. Fun fun.

Kristi, have they mentioned sarcoidosis? I had a weird lump on my shin that was warm years ago and they did the same thing, tons of blood work, chest x-ray, chest cat-scan, then (at Lahey no less), the pulmonologist (?) said, "well it's hard to say, I'm going to go with sarcoidosis, how's that sound?" and they gave me a brochure on it. Weird. Here's:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: that your thing is benign.

[Christa--Are you surviving your OUT OF CONTROL week?

And speaking of Hines, does everyone like my new avatar? I am so mean to him!!! :rotfl:

Krista - I just logged on real quick! Thanks for asking! THis week is OOC! LOVE the avatar...I was looking at it thinking how cute!

Dave - WTG on that race! BBBBRRRRRRR!:cold: :cold:

Mel! WOW!  FAST FAST FAST!:cheer2:

Lots of :dance3: :dance3: this week in shows and that on top of my 5 new clients...so maybe this week is very out of control!:scared1: But that is OK..The :dance3: can count as xtraining, right? Yeah, b/c I sweat right through my costume most of the time.

Did 4.5 miles yesterday at a 8:26 MPM! Took JRT with me and it felt great! Danced today and not sure about tomorrow...Have to be @ work early and stay late. I need to be rich so I will not have to work!:yay: ;)

Does anyone have any good, fast, and healthy recipes for dinner? That's what's killing Stephen and I. After working all day and then coming home and running, who feels like cooking dinner? Especially when we aren't ready to start cooking until well after 7:00

I really like the two cookbooks that Kathleen Daelemans has out, the Cooking Thin lady. There are some good, quick recipes in there, plus she always gives lots of ideas for how to morph your meals to have them last a few days longer but still keep things interesting. I especially love her chicken taco casserole from her Getting Thin and Loving Food book. I'm very much in the same boat as you with regards to cooking late, and since I'm on my own, it is even harder to motivate to cook for one person! I also wind up cooking one big meal on the weekend so I can stretch it into the week, i.e. a pot of chili or some stew. Last but not least, for when I am way too tired to spend a lot of time in the kitchen I love to make scrambled eggs for dinner. Throw in cheese and veggies, a salad on the side, and its done.

I got my registration in for the Peachtree Road Race on Saturday so now it is just a matter of waiting to see if I got in. They take 55,000 entries so I am really hoping I make it. Now to get my distance up from 5K to 10K by July 4. Can I do it? You bet I can!

Hi Everyone-

Ah, a rest day for me. I am working out the logistics on my race on Sunday. I am running the half at the Georgia ING. Then I am going to help run over 60 first time marathoners up the huge hill at mile 23.5. The Georgia Team in Training Team is all alone in this marathon so they have been begging alumni for help. So a half marathon and then some hill training - nothing to it right?!

Mel - Wow! Congrats on that speed. I know that felt good.

Hey all,
but I still forced myself to go to the gym and toughed it out through the run. I imagine I'll have many moments like that during the marathon so it's probably good practice to learn to push myself even when I don't really feel like going. Kristin

Thats great! The last 6 miles of the marathon was all mental for me and it sounds like you got some good training in for both the physical and the mental! Way to go!

but I think I"m just getting lonely running. My marathon training buddy is now gearing up for triathalon season, and training for his first Ironman--so he's not around anymore. And DH and I can't run at the same time b/c of the kiddos.

Do you use music when you run? When my solo runs start to drag, I change out the songs on my ipod or at least add a few new ones and it really boosts my spirits.

Definately! Just remember to practice dodging walkers. DH says we ran at least one extra mile going sideways around the walkers - and we were in the first untimed group(the 30,00-40,000's). This year we sent in qualifying times so hopefully we will end up ahead of the walkers. Now we just check with the bank every day to see if our checks clear!
Just lining up for the start was an amazing experience - to see that many people in one place, all the helicopters, the music, the tension, the cheers when we finally crossed the start line (the clock read 0:34:10!) Then once you start, the crowd support is absolutely amazing - its a 6.2 mile long party. DH and I literally danced up cardiac hill. You are gonna love it! Where are you going to stay in Atlanta?

Cecilia,

I'm thinking I'll do one of the two "official" hotels; either the Intercontinental or Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. I have to drive home to Charlotte after the race so I am hoping one of them will give me a late check out so I can shower. Is it true that they have bus transportation back to the start or will I need to take MARTA?

Susan-

Nice! Much nicer than my 30 minute train ride! I will check, but I think the Intercontinental is right at the start line - Then its a quick train ride back from the finish so that sounds like an excellent choice - they both are. But I would go ahead and get my reservation now - you can always cancel it if you don't get in.

Cecilia

Susan -
Don't be afraid of Marta - I use it all the time to get downtown for shopping etc. And it will be full of runners so it will be very very safe. And it is relatively clean as well.
However, if your hotel has a shuttle that would be even better because the Marta station is almost a mile from the finish - back past the race course. It is fun to watch all the people still running though. Actually, it was amazing that an hour after I finished the streets were still packed with runners.

Mexican Chicken
1/4 t chili powder
1/4 t paprika
1/4 t onion powder
pinch ground cumin
pinch salt
per 2 chicken breast, grill or bake. You can cut them up and use them in salad, quesadillas, tacos, or have them with another side.
It's from the Biggest Loser Cookbook.

Trying to learn everyone here is going to be harder than I thought. Here goes my first try.

Krista- I have used the freezer menus from www.savingdinner.com to help me have dinner on the table quickly. It's sort of like doing a Dream Dinners thing at home. I spend one morning a month putting together about 20 dinners to stuff into my freezer. When I know I'll be pressed for time I take one out of the freezer to thaw and just finish cooking it when I get home. I really like the shopping list feature because that saves me time at the grocery store.

I did 4 miles on the TM at the Y using my new heart-rate monitor to keep me in aerobic range. It took me 49 minutes which means that I have been working WAY too hard previously. :earseek: It was really hard to slow down :snail: but I still feel that I got a good workout.

Kiena

I forget who originally brought this up but that was an interesting topic about stretching vs. non stretching. I think it really is whatever works for the individual. I never stretch before running...a slow buildup in speed for about 5 min usually has my legs warmed up to the point that I don't feel like I need a stretch at all. Afterwards though, I stretch for about 10 min or so. I'm usually not very sore after running either. Another trick we used to do back when I played soccer, especially at camps and such, if you feel the effects of lactic acid built up in your legs, lay down and elevate your legs up against a wall or anything you can find at a 90 degree angle and it actually helps drain it out faster. I got through many grueling camps and 3-a-day sessions thanks to this.

I'm heading out the door to the gym.

I wanted to let everyone here know I've updated the calendar sticky and if you're not on there, please post your dates to that thread. Either Ashley or I will update the calendar.

See ya later...
:cool1:

The snow is melting the sun was out and the temperature was 50 so was able to get in a 5 mile outdoor walk in 73 minutes. It felt great. I hope to get my distance walk in on Thurs.

Nancy

Hey all! Had a decent workout today. 4 miles ave. 8:49 pace. But had more knee pain than yesterday--UGH!!!! Time for ice and ibuprofen! Then xtrained by helping my mom rake leaves--or should I say re-rake the leaves, since the kids decided to destroy all the lovely piles that mom had made!

Well, gotta go get the kids bathed and in jammies. DH is working nights for the next 10 days or so--so I'm single parenting it!

Maybe that's GGD related...Sometimes when I see Kenny Chesney I get a weird warm thing going on.... :lmao:
:rotfl2: OMG, Judy!!! :rotfl2:
I just screamed out loud & now Zack wants to know what's so funny.
It is not that kind of warm feeling, silly! It is on my outer right thigh, just above the knee. Not a particularly interesting place. But maybe I should have John check it out just to be sure? ;)

Krista - love the avatar! And if you think you need to lose weight, I am going to shot myself right now, chickie! You look great, and I can only wish to be where you are.

Speaking of weight, add me to the list of people gaining weight as the mileage adds up! I am seriously considering taking a hiatus from training after the Minnie just to lose some of this weight that has crept up on me.

Hi everyone. Just got my 2 miler in at 21:39 for an average pace of 10:49. This week is a relatively easy week. 6 miles total for the week, but next week the mileage starts to step up. I may need to start slowing down I think..??

Apparently there is a lot of controversy out there over the stretch vs. do not stretch. I personally don't stretch beforehand. I don't remember which of my running books I read it in, but I've heard that stretching cold muscles is a bad idea. I do stretch once I'm done with the run though. I find I don't get too sore, but do whatever works best for you!

I got my official results from the St. Patrick's Day 10K. 1:07:03, 401 out of 436 people. 54 out of 58 in the F20-29 category. Yikes, there are some fast people out there! I don't put too much into how I place since I prefer just to gauge against where I am vs where I have been. And cutting 11 minutes off my 10K time for April last year seems like a big improvement!!

Hi everyone. Remember me? My name is Steve. I’m Krista’s husband and I used to post occasionally before work got in the way of my DIS time………..Ok, just kidding! But really, HI GUYS! It feels really good to actually get a chance to post. I’ll try to catch up with everyone:

Stephanie—did you decide if you’re definitely doing the “two marathons”? Let me know what you figure out, because I’m thinking about doing almost the same thing with MCM in Oct and Disney in Jan.

Cam (and everyone else contemplating Chicago)—you’re tempting Krista and I. Stop it! The last thing we need is another really expensive weekend trip. But it IS only 5 hours away. Hmmm…..

Kelley—welcome back!!

Sunny—good to see you here again. Don’t stay away so much! By the way, we have a NordicTrac E3200 at home and it works great.

Kristi—when did you change the picture in your siggie again?? I didn’t recognize you (yet again) because of the new pic. Although it’s good to see you have Johnny on there. We would expect nothing less! :thumbsup2

Dave—speedy, speedy, speedy! Are you even planning to try to run with me for the Pig or are you just going to say goodbye at the pre-race coffee table and we’ll just catch up to you when the rest of us mortals finish?? :) Ok, for real, good job on the race! I guess we can be glad that Ohio isn’t that snowy right now.

Kevin—nice job on the pace and getting outside! Gotta love the wireless internet, huh? I couldn’t live without mine, either.

Judy—you ARE a brutal coach to yourself. Remind me to not let you coach me. :) Hope your knee is doing better (I had to ask Krista what happened since I didn’t keep up with last week’s thread).

Krista—I know you’re my wife and all and I see you every day, but what are you doing switching your picture on your avator?? I didn’t recognize you, either!!

Laurie—nice job on the 5K and great pace!

Colleen--do the Pig.....do the Pig..... :)

Jim—I’m not the least bit jealous of all your Florida tid-bits. I’m perfectly happy here in cold, rainy, “when is this winter EVER going to end” Ohio.

Mel—WTG on the pace!

MelR—all I have to say is that you’re a machine! I had no idea you did all those races after Goofy, either.

Kristin—nice job with the 4 miler. It was weird to read this morning at 8:00am that you were ready to go to sleep for the night. I guess that’s what happens when you’re halfway around the globe….

Vic—go for the trail run!

Christa—hope it’s not too crazy for you with the 5 new clients. I can sympathize, my workload has been way too crazy, too. Good luck this week!

Well, training’s been going well. I got in a 13 miler this past weekend and I’ve pretty much gotten back to my typical week of 4 runs, 2 cross trains, and 2 lifting sessions. I feel good about that. And tonight was a great run. It was perfect weather (nice, since we’ve had mostly rain for awhile) and about 50 degrees. I did 4 miles at an 8:05 pace. I really didn’t mean to push that hard, but it just felt really good to be outside without 14 layers of clothes on. I think I get the pleasure of taking Hines out on a run tomorrow night. Krista ran with him tonight and we usually switch on and off for a run or two a week with him. She must have worn him out this evening on the run, because he’s snoring at my feet right now.

Ok, I know I’ve missed people, so please don’t hate me. Hi to everyone I’ve forgotten! Hope everything is going well, and I PROMISE I’ll be more active on the thread this week.

Happy training!

Steve

Nancy

Good going, Nancy! I won't get to do my distance until Saturday. In between, I'm only doing short sprints and XTraining. I know it's not what the training plan suggests, but it seems to work for me.

Good evening everyone!

2.5 on the TM this evening. 13:20 pace at 2% incline. I had no energy. But, got through it and feel much better.

MelR, Krista and Steve - I signed up for the 5K trail run. Should be interesting, and it gives me a good reason to by some trail shoes. ;) :rotfl: Krista, love the avatar. :)

All - Great job on your runs.

Take care. :)
