Wk of Mar 11--WISH Walking/Running Club

Yesterday I had my VO2 tested. It was a pretty interesting experience getting hooked up to a breathing machine while running on a TM.

I've had the heart rate monitor sitting in the drawer, but have not used it because I did not know what HR to train at. Now I know.

The numbers came out to about what I expected and learned what I need to do inorder to get a faster pace.....run more speed work. Why does it always come down to speed work. :confused3

When I start training again I will include speed work, but that won't be for several months.

Jim,

How close was your maximum heart rate to the 220 - age formula? Also was this a study or did you need to pay for it. I would really like to have this test, but the cheapest I found was $150.

Thanks,
Scott

Greetings team,

I know I have been missing in action for a long time, but you all know how crazy life can get sometimes. I am coming out of lurker mode to post that my wife and I (well, I guess she did all the work, I was just there :goodvibes ) had our second child this past weekend. We had to induce a little bit early because of pregnancy-induced high blood pressure.

Anastasia Isabel was born at 11:01 pm on 3/10. She weighed 7 lbs, 9 oz. Other than being tired all the time, we are good. We got to come home yesterday, which was nice. Needless to say, I didn't get any running in this weekend.

Congratulations Paul. That's fantastic news! I was just thinking of you. All my best to you, your wife, and your family. Congratulations again!

Paul, honest, not to copy Dave or anything but I WAS thinking about you this morning! Oh wow! How exciting! What a beautiful name! Congratulations to both of you! A new little running partner for you! :cloud9:

Hey now, don't go away on us again. We miss you around here. :goodvibes

CONGRATULATIONS, PAUL!
She is absolutely beautiful!

Just got back from what was supposed to be a 5 miler.
Turned into an all walking 4 miler.
I did my normal w3/r1 for the first mile only. Then since I had absolutely no energy, I decided to not do anymore running intervals, just get the steps in. I stopped back at home around 1.6 and grabbed some sport beans. I thought maybe the sugar would help. I think the sugar did help some, but still no running for me. I decided to just stop at 4 miles. Here's the ugly splits:
12:58
14:30
14:17
14:46
56:34 :sad2:

I know I should be happy I stuck with it feeling as dead as I did. I really think me & the doc. are going to have alot to talk about when I finally go in to see him next week. I really, really think my thyroid is off again. Also, I have this weird warm sensation on my outer right thigh on occassion. It almost feels as if someone poured warm coffee on my leg. Then it goes away. I'll have to make sure that is not some crazy wogging injury! Nevermind, I have zero energy at all lately. I am starting to get nervous about my half on April 1.

Ok, off to a quick shower, then I am taking Zack to try out a Tae Kwon Do class. This should be interesting! :rotfl:

I just added the WISH clipart to my signature......How do I make it go next to the pirate clippie instead of underneath it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Total hit or miss skimm though. I've been sick sine Firday night. The wether here has been awesome since staruday (that would be above 40 and sunny fro us) and I have been watching all teh action on the bike path from teh lazy boy. Ugh! Coach told em I'm out tonight, too, althuogh I did make it to work. :(

Paul - Congratulations! She is beautiful!

Jenneg - You have a return between teh 2 sets of code. Just take that out. Oh, and WELCOME!!!!

Dave - COngrats on teh great times! Thanks fro thinking of me. :D

Krista - So sorry about the headache. Are you staying hydrated? I get headaches if I don't hydrate well, but it's usually post run.

Mel - Awesome splits! My opinion? If you want to be fast, do r4/w1. IF you want to run, you coudl do it in a heartbeat, but it seems like the times do slow down a bit. Thanks for missing me. :D Things have been ok.

Ashley - I hate teh first mile and teh middle 1 or 2, depending on run length. In cold temps, it takes me 3 to warm up, though.

solo - You haven't been out yet???????? If I had the energy, I'd drive over and kick you in the shins. :p Lucky you, I'd have to pass my house, and that couch is calling me big time.

Jennasis - Welcome! The half willtake you under teh water tbridge by teh contemproary. That's a sizabel hill. Plus, I think there's at least one up ramp, but I could eb mistaken. You may want to get soem hills in. Then again, I'd go bonkers trainign on a track, so what do I know? :confused3 Oh and many of us train using the palan in Marthoning for Mortals (MfM around here) by John "The Penguin" Bingham. Many others use Galloway or Higdon plans, although Higdon seems very advanced to me.

Lynne - I hope you can find your way out of lurkesom soon. We miss you! Hope everything's going ok!!!!:wizard:

Judy - Good to have you back. :grouphug: :grouphug:

OK, I know I missed a ton of people/posts. Coming in on page 6 really stinks. I'll try harder next week.

Just put the two links to the pics next to each other, without putting an "enter" in between (so they're on the same line).

Oh Paul... she is so precious! CONGRATULATIONS!! Just look at those cheeks!!!!

Kristi - I am glad you stuck with it. THATA GIRL!!!!

Carrie - Oh I hope you feel better soon. I went out on Saturday and it was awesome. My first outsider since the 1/2. I ran through puddles and had wet feet... yet not a complaint from me!!!

Dave - Have fun being famous for a minute. I just finished filming section 1 of a training video here at work (will be doing 3). These are for our customers (software training). So if anyone out there happens upon my video, I would be happy to sign it for you!

OK, gotta get going...

Paul--- Congratulations!!

solo - You haven't been out yet???????? If I had the energy, I'd drive over and kick you in the shins. :p Lucky you, I'd have to pass my house, and that couch is calling me big time.

Jeez, I never figured you one for violence! (Actually, I applaud your initiative. I figured, as an engineer and all, you would spend six month designing and testing a shin-kicking prototype robot-style device... then by the time you had all the bugs worked out and had it patented it'd be...ooohh.... 2014 and by then, the race is over... ) :teeth: I do hope you feel better soon.

All that said, I got outside in the (beautiful) weather and did 5 miles in 47:42, or 9:32/mile. Splits were:
Mile 1: 8:53
Mile 2: 9:12
Mile 3: 9:42
Mile 4: 9:53
Mile 5: 10:00

Sort of a diminishing returns thing going on, it seems. I figure it's a starting point if nothing else. Seeing as this is my first outdoor run since New Years, I'm not taking it too hard. Of course the weather is supposed to turn cooler the rest of the week, so I will just have to force myself outside.

Take Care!

Hi there guys! I'm new to this board (long time DIS member). I was inspired to give the 2008 Half Marathon a shot. I've taken up running, though I let my workouts slip in Jan/Feb because of the bitter cold. When I was jogging I could do about 11-12 minute mile and felt after a straight 1/2 hour that I had plenty of go left.

Any tips on training? What kind of terrain should I work on. I really prefer running on the HS track where it's flat.

:welcome: Glad you found us!

It sounds like you have a pretty good start already. What are your goals for the race? Are you planning on using a particular training program? If your goal is just to finish, lots of people here swear by John Bingham's "Marathoning for Mortals" plan. It certainly worked wonders for me.

I think it always helps to vary your terrain somewhat, but you will definately want to put your feet to asphalt when you get around to the big training time. Tracks tend to be a more highly cushioned surface, so you will want your legs to get used to what the road feels like. Ditto for running on a course with a few hills. While the Disney course is "flat", it does have some hills to it (e.g. off ramps and the like) and running uphill is obviously a bit tougher than running straight out flat. Additionally, those hills will allow you to build strength in your legs, which is very beneificial.

If you have any other questions, then by all means ask away!

Kevin :earsboy:

Paul - How beautiful! A big congrats to you! I can understand why you skipped out on your running this weekend!:rotfl:

I saw Bree's baby today! He is a chunk of love! He is laughing and talking...well as much as a 4 month old can talk. But VERY CUTE!

Kristi - So glad you stuck with it! I sometimes have runs like that!:wizard:

Dave - can I have your autograph?:rolleyes1

AHHHH, Gotta go help DD9 with her homework...that is if I can understand it. She has such hard homework these days. :teacher:

Hi there everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul - Congrats what a cutie :cutie:

Craig - Glad your feeling better :wizard:

Dave - Those times are unbelievable - totally awesome!!!!!!!!! I remember when a mile was tough on your shins. Your devotion and persevarance is really an inspiration.

Today was my 2nd day in a row getting the steps in :cool1: I've started walking with a couple co-workers at lunch as it has been so nice out. The weather is supposed to get nasty again but we plan to continue just walking inside the plant rather than outside. It helps to have others that are standing there with shoes on making me get out on the trail :)

WISHing everyone the best!!!!!!! :grouphug:

Mel: Ooo, sending  to DD. Hope the allergic reaction was just a minor thing! How awful!!

Andrew: :thumbsup2 great run!!

Calcio: :love2:

Stephanie:  woo-hoo--great run!!

TXAng: does this mean your Mom will be closer to you? Is that a good thing? There was a while there when I thought 2000 miles wasn't far enough away. Since my Mom fell and broke both legs last September, I'm really too far away now. I hopw you get along well with your Mom.

Ashley: my left toenail is looking a little bruised. I don't know, I kinda think it's a "red badge of courage" and don't mind the bruised look. I'm just weird that way. Great time on the run! It sounds about the same time I run. And it was outdoors! Sweet...

Jackie: congrats on running the mile! Yea!!!

Dave: good luck on the race. There doesn't seem to be any races around here and I'd love to run one. Just for fun as I'm ready for a 10K. Hmmm, you're in Rochester, NY? Hmmm, DH and DD will be in London this weekend. Hmmm, maybe I ought to drive over to Rochester for a race.............;)

Colleen: sorry to hear DH may not be ready for Boston. If you don't get here, I'll think about you!!! And thanks! I'm feeling really good right now about my training.

Judy: :lmao: I try (but don't get away with) 12 months before a race not doing housework before a race.

Jennasis: :welcome: you're gonna LUV these boards!!

Paul: huge CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Adorable picture. Is this baby #1 for you?

If I missed anyone--sorry!

I had a GREAT run at lunch. I did speed work. 10:30 min miles for 2 min then 10:00 min miles for 2 min for 2 miles. 2 miles in 20:31!! That's a fabulous time for me! Tomorrow is a day off for me.

I hope everyone has a great day!!

The Bingham book sounds great. Ummm.."the penguin"???What's that all about? Does the guy walk a little duck footed? Cause my wonderful Dh does actually havea pronounced penguin-like walk (duck footed) and he's afraid of either embarassing or hurting himself by running. I've tried assuring him that he'll be fine.

Our goal is to enter and finish the race. I don't care if we're last. We'll get healthier while we train, have a HUGE goal to work towards together and score a trip to WDW!! What more could we ask for.

Can anyone recommend a good but inexpensive pedometer so I can accurately track how far I'm running per minute? I don't mind roadwork for training but around here (NC) running on a road is akin to Russian Roulette. The drivers are scary bad.

Paul - What a cutie!!! Congratulations!
Martha - Great job on the speedwork!
Carrie - Hope you get to feeling better and get outside before the cold weather sets back in later this week.
Kristi - Good job gettin out there, but I really do hope it's only a passing thing and not something more serious. pixiedust:
Well....the weather stayed nice, in fact we hit a record high for today - 75deg. My wife and I took a nice 3 mile walk today on the bike path. Just got back and going to hit up the weights for a couple of circuits.

Happy Training!
