Wk of July 27 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Stopping in to post my miles and time from tonight.

Debra~

Bill~ I am (for the second time) actually training for my upcoming races. No 4 (or 3) weeks and run this time. This is something Kevin Z and I had been meaning to do for some time. I see now why we skipped it! :lmao: :rotfl: :rolleyes1 When I line up on race day for any of the races listed below, I will know I did everything I could do to be prepared to successfully complete the race.

Here is my info for tonight:

Miles: 4
Time: 36:38
Pace: 9:09

Splits:
9:04
9:24
9:12

Have a great evening!

Hey ya'll, did you miss me??? Hmm???

Here is my makup since posting on page 5...

Lili:[/B] Hoping the "diggin in" for training is working out well.

Howard: :worship: :worship: Not much more to say.

Terri: Sound like the training for the tri is coming along. Work outs at the Y. YMCA...there a place you can go...:rolleyes1 sing along...
I wish I could talk my boss into less work time and more training time.:rotfl:

Carrie: The rainbow photo was for everyone silly. Sounds like you have a wonderfully clean house!!

Angie: Drippy, sweaty, soggy, but did you also have the pinky pistols??? Don't like walking just after thunder and rainstorms, but love it right before because it cools off so nicely!!

Stacie: Hope you found the right training schedule for you.

Solo Kevin: Hi Neighbor!! I am currently reading "The Last Lecture" and am almost done. I also like what her thinks about brick walls. Nice runs at the beach - are your paths North/South or West/East?? Water, Water, Water it is a must have.

Liz: Hope the weather is very nice for your firt half!! Enjoy the taper and I know its hard but come 1/2 day it will all click in!!

Jen in Ga: MTC: I like Miles.

Leana: Here;s some good thought your way for the 20miler coming up.

Cam: You one fully filled up workouts/runs schedule!! You go girl! (I started back up on WW this past Sunday, the day of my 12miler. I keep up the the WW from around 1998/99 I like that one and don't like the new one.)

Lisa: Taper, Taper, hold on tight!!

Michelle: Hill work, whoo hoo. I love my Mount Trashmore walks.

Bill: Yes, I agree training in the summer in FL sucks and is no picnic. You know what doesn't kill us makes us STRONGER! Space Coast - did you hear they actually found ice on Mars.

Debra: Garmi is a her.(at least I think so) I miss her when she is not with me on my training walks sitting there on my left wrist. No skirts for me - my body/middle area is not suited to wearing a running skirt. I'm still here, don't leave for DL until Thursday August 28th. But would still love some mickey mouse ice cream with ALoha Jeff.

ALOHA Jeff: Can't wait to be saying ALOHA while stayin at the Poly come January!! You had you 3.25 hours off from work!! YEAH YOU!! Yes, please post a photo of te DOLE Whip delights being savored by you princesses. NIght Reef Walking, hmm just be careful not to step barefoot on any corral. - OUCH!. I got my DL email also.

Shoutouts to DUCKIE, MAURA and VIC (did you enjoy NASCAR on Sunday?)!

AFM: Was able to get in 3/4 miles Tuesday night after dinner and the thunderstorms. DOn't particulary like that time of day. Did some core/pilates last night. Got out to my fav place Mount Trashmore!! Saw some clouds on horizon in the West. At about mile 3 heard the thunder and saw some lightening and then the alarm went off. I kept an eye on the sky and counted the time from seeing the bolt and hearing it and still was 6-10 miles out. Kept moving. As I turned to head back East could see the storms and very grey. Then slowly but surely started hearing drops hitting the ground and then it came. I actually jogged the last part down the hill to get finished with my 4 miles. Yeah got it in!!
Having some celebratory icecream Vanilla with choc chips and some SHELL topping.:woohoo:

Take care everyone!!

I am meeting a friend at the gym at 12:45, right after work. (so this w/o WILL happen)
Hopefully, we can do the gym thing together often enough to help us both stay accountable.
I am going to shoot for 3 or 4 miles.
My knee was sore after my 3 miler the other day, so I plan to play it by ear.
I'd like to do 4 though.

I will be MIA for a bit.
We leave for Williamsburg, VA tomorrow morning.
Chad & I are going to do our best to walk/run while there.
The temps are going to be 95-100 down there next week.
Not sure I can swear I will be wogging in that! :scared1:

Sorry for the total drive-by, but you know how it is the day before going on vacation... :scared:

Good morning WISHers!

Hoping everyone's Friday is starting off well.

1/2 marathon training started this week. 2 miles on Wednesday and stadium runs yesterday. Strength training is scheduled for today.

Everyone - Have a great weekend, and keep up the great work!!

:)

Tracey -- Yes, we missed you! Welcome back! ;) Good luck with WW :goodvibes

Kristi -- Hey, do you need a mid-way break on your drive? We'd LOVE to see you guys!! Do you still have my cell phone number?

Vic -- Take it easy on the stadium training, my friend. I have heard that is really rough on the knees.

Today is a rest day for me. It felt positively decadent to sleep until 6:30. :lovestruc I'll do my crunches & pushups tonight, but am otherwise hoping that a rest day today will mean I am able to run 4 tomorrow. My quads are only marginally less painful today. Jeff, my PT, called yesterday to say he had an opening this morning and did I want to get a workout in. When I laughed about my quads he said he'd been worrying that I'd pushed too hard. He said he knew if I wasn't working out I was DEFINITELY hurting. LOL! He offered to do other stuff but I used Howard as an excuse and said I'd told my DH I was sticking to a plan that included rest days. (hoping to be a good example to Howard, mind you! )

Awesome attitude and outlook, Stacie!!! Take it from one who knows. The only thing you cannot achieve is something you do not attempt. I NEVER thought I'd stick to training for a 1/2 marathon and complete it without being swept. Go for it!! We are all here cheering you on :cheer2: and when I get to the FINISH line, I know you'll already be there with that gorgeous bling around your neck!!

Love it Stacie!!!

Love it Stacie!!!

Yeah, I think this quote probably applies to a lot of us in our training (and our lives in general). We are doing or have done something we never thought possible, whether it be a 5K, 15K, Half, Full or Goofy. How many of us really thought...Sure! I can run/walk a marathon, half, etc.??? Not me! :goodvibes

We can do it!!!
Stacie

Carrie:
In order to run faster, you must run faster.
Wise words, of course. Along with "Where ever you go, there you are." One hundred "You are a child of the 80s" points to whoever gets that film reference. Those points are redeemable for nothing but a few snickers, of course, and I'm not talking about the candy bars.

Aloha Jeff: So what made you decide to start training with Guru Les, if you were in your comfort zone? Was it a desire to run faster? Yay for your waiver coming--NOW you can sneak away from paradise and get a solid month of race training in at DL. Nothing like running the real course and knowing those conditions. Plus, it's Disney.

Bill: "Just wait and see" how things turn out after an accident? That's what the doctors said about my accidents (had two baby teeth knocked back in a car accident) and look how I turned out! Well, the teeth are okay, but... Well, at least Timmy seems like the kind of kid to take everything in stride. (Which probably means one thing to me and send out big warning flags to you as a parent.) You're doing 14 miles in the middle of the summer, in FL? Is there an upcoming event? Is this your base?

I'm glad you asked me about how my shoulder injury affected the ice cream getting to my mouth. It didn't, thank goodness, but IF I was ever injured to that point....I'd have to rely on old of my trust fallbacks, the milkshake. Ice cream through a bendy straw. Ahhhhh, does it get any better than that? Maybe while lounging in a hammock. And how do people feel about malteds?

Howard: So you're doing 1/2 marathon at 3rd week of September, full at the end of October, full at the 3rd week of November, and the Goofy in January. (Okay, so this is the first time I tried processing this information.) Can I ask about your recovery and preparation between the MCM and Philly? Are you going to treat MCM as a training LR, Philly as an easy run, going all-out for both, or something in between?

FWIW, I'm generally curious as to how people plan to do 1/2 or fulls when the races are sort of close together. All input welcome!

Racey Tracey: I read about the ice on Mars news. I'm almost embarrassed to admit how cool I thought that was. Made me want to pull out The Martian Chronicles and reread it. (Okay, I'm a geek.) Thanks for clarifying the status of Garmi's gender. Wouldn't want to offend her if I ever meet her, you know! I hadn't thought about how a running skirt would like my middle. Maybe it's not a good idea that they start a relationship! :scared1: My main thought is, as it always is, about pockets for my stuff. And long lengths to cover my Macbook leg burns. (Vanity, I know.) One of the things I note about your post is how often you're training in inclement weather, even with thunder and lightning. Very brave of you, I think, even if the view is gorgeous. The other thing I notice is the ice cream, of course. Kindred spirits, we are. And it's been far too long since I've had hard-shell ice-cream topping.

Kristi: I realize you probably won't get this message this weekend, but have a great time in Williamsburg sightseeing, walking/running/wogging, and just in general! :yay:

Vic: :cool1: It's great to see you. Your talk about stadium runs always makes me feel like such a slacker. (So why is it great to see you again? Oh, yea, because you're a member of the Mickey Mouse Club--and we like you!)

Cam: Jeff, your PT, is definitely impressed with you and likes you as a client. I overheard one PT at my gym telling one of his clients that, if he has an session open up, he calls only those people he feels are really committed to meeting their goals. Sure, maybe the PT was blowing smoke, but I think there's truth to it, too. I'm glad you chose the rest day, though, because you deserve it and your body needs it. :thumbsup2

Today's shout-out: Morgan, are you still quick like a bunny?

Stacie:

Or as Yoda says, "Do or not do. There is no try." A very wise woman offered this quote to the board recently. I sure do admire her. :goodvibes I just love feeling the good vibes in your posts.

As for me: XT today, including my new obsession, the virtual cycle machine. I'm still slow and being passed by those blankety-blank virtual riders, but liking it. I'll be doing some real bike riding this weekend, but for pleasure. And a LR, which I hope will be pleasurable or at least satisfying after the fact. I'm going to try a new route, and hope to remember to bring a camera (following Lily's suggestion).

Today's incident report: A run-in with my ever-so-brave cat, who made her first exploration of the hallway below our apartment floor. She snuck down there early, early this morning. She disoriented herself and got too frightened to come back up. So I rescued her from her own bravery and, as a reward, received several puncture wounds in my upper arm. (I would call it my bicep, but, well...:rolleyes1) Now my arm looks like I've had a date with a half-blind Dracula who missed my neck. Somebody tell me why I own cats again?

BUCKAROO BANZAI!!! Love it!!

Nice reference there, monkey boy! ;)

Aloha Jeff: So what made you decide to start training with Guru Les, if you were in your comfort zone? Was it a desire to run faster?

Deb: I never actually decided to run with Guru Les, it just happened with lots and lots of protesting on my part. See, he used to run with Speedy Tim, and another guy Steve. But they don't come out on Tuesday's and Thursday's anymore. By the way, Les is 66, and runs about a 4:15 marathon. He's got 24 years on me, and kicks my okole (Hawaiian translation for you mainlanders: meaning "A$$, rear, backside, rump, booty, hindquarters).

So Les told me to follow him one day, and I said there's no way I'm keeping up with you. He said he'd take it easy on me, so I tried. The next couple of times when the group met up, I would "avoid looking into the eyes of Mara" (think Indiana Jones Temple of Doom). I was hating it for the first week or two. But then he had no one to run with, so I gave in and shadowed his footsteps, albiet from a block or two from behind.

Ever so slowly, I found my pace quickening, and my breathing staying calm. So through 8 miles of osmossis, my running improved, my stamina improved, and my form improved. Sweating out all the toxins (beer, scotch, ice cream) was a big benefit.

Keep in mind, on Sunday's Les runs with the advanced group, at about 8:30 minute miles, consistently for 13 miles. Then in the final 3 miles of our long runs (16 total), they push it to 7:30 minute miles going UP Kahala Ave, UP the backside of Diamond Head crater, and down the frontside of Diamond Head crater. No way I'm doing that!!! My comfort pace with him is 8:40 per mile, and 8:30 per mile is pushing it for me :scared1: .

But I admit, training with the faster people, has improved me as a runner.

Last night I saw a news story on Discovery Health about shoulder injuries, and rehab. There was some lady from Pittsburgh, sticking her head under the lever on the soft serve ice cream machine, opening her mouth as wide as possible, and shouting "let 'er rip." They discribed the scene as cold therapy from inside out, and giving the shoulder a rest.

If I didn't know any better, it was Deb. :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Scott, welcome back!

BUCKAROO BANZAI!!! Love it!!

Nice reference there, monkey boy! ;)

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner!!! Love this film--a cult classic. (Just saw it on my Comcast On Demand free movies. Watch it and be awed. You won't understand it the first time. Or the second. Or the third. But it's sooooo quotable.)

Don't tug on that, you never know what it might be attached to.

Aloha Jeff: Ahhh, thanks for the explanation. I kind of feel better know that you "stumbled" into a faster pace. Okay, so you ran into it, but that your decision was organic.

Btw, since when are beer, scotch, and ice cream toxins? Elixirs of life, baby! (Along with chocolate, naturally.)

GOOD EVENING TEAM

Have to make this quick because I am getting ready to actually have real date with DH (friends called and took DS's for the night  ). Wow a meal with real adult conversation and NO "Mom, He's touching me" in the background I will be in heaven. To top it all of it's mexican and I have not had a margarita in forever.

Anyway I do want to respond to a few ( I am really truly sorry for anyone I miss)

Debra:
Been meaning to tell you DS saw Batman, "LOVED IT" in his own words, but he did inform me in his, I am the big brother I am concerned, not really I enjoy holding some kind of power over you , voice, that his little brother age 8, should for no reason, under no circumstances see that movie!! :scared1: Then proceeded to describe in detail some pretty gruesome details, after which I replied, "you just described in vivid detail to your little brother all the gross parts so I guess he can see it now" :rotfl2: Kidding, he will not be seeing it but strictly but I said so not because, DS 12 did.

Stacie: Love the quote  Thank you so very much
Tracy: What the heck are pinky pistols??????? Missed that one sorry

Ok so did spin and flow (yoga, pilates) last night then just did 3.5 little bit a go.

Guess What???? So excited, booked Ohana for Sunday night of marathon weekend!!!!! What a way to reward ourselves for going the distance, I LOVE THAT PLACE!!!!!

Oh yeah real quick,

Krista and Bill Thanks so much for asking about my job, it is still amazing. I had today off which I am still so thankful for and I am currentlly working on my fist set of drawings that will be all my design, it is the most amazing, rewarding feeling.

I see a pattern in my life, working toward things that leave such a feeling of accomplishment. :thumbsup2

I am getting ready for Rock and Roll San Antonio in November. I think I am a week ahead but I am sure that week will disappear with a couple of others by the time it actually gets here. Just as long as you don't need your arm for the milkshakes. It might be difficult to string together several bendy straws. Not sure about the cat thing. I had one bite me when I was trying to be nice to it and I'm still not fond of owning one. Other people can have them and I will play with them but I don't think one will ever find it's way in our house.

...and stadium runs yesterday.

Is this where you go to the concession stand and back during timeouts or some other short break. I guess it could be watching other people run on the track but that would take less effort.

It could also be the aftermath of eating food from the concession stand. :scared1: :lmao:

So, you finally read it and comprehended it? :cool1: Yes, it is quite an undertaking. Here is my thought process. I hope to be in good enough shape by the Philly Distance Run to run it as part of my MCM training. My schedule actually calls for a 13 mile run that day (so that works out nice). I think I will be able to recover from that within a few days and get back to my training schedule for the Marine Corps Marathon in late October.

I will have almost 3.5 weeks to recover and to continue to train for the MCM. My mileage will be up high enough so that I am ready in time for MCM. I expect to need at least 4 to 5 days to fully recover from MCM (and the Phila Marathon). The runs I will put in between MCM and Philly will mirror the final weeks of my MCM training plan.

For the Goofy, I will probably just do the same. Calculate how many weeks are left between the Philly Marathon and the Goofy (+ 5K) and run those number of weeks at the end of the schedule. I really want to be in good enough physical and mental shape to run good races and shoot for a PR.

Lofty goals, but then again... without goals I would be sitting at home eating bon-bons and watching the tube. This is so much more challenging and fun.

:grouphug:
