Wk of July 27 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I like what Angie suggested also, here is my 16 week plan f,or walking a half marathon Long Walks....
4,5,6,7,7,7,8,9,8,10,8,12,8,13,6,6.

I do change it up a bit depending on the weather, but also like to get in my 13 at least 2 to 3 weeks before the event.!!!

Thanks for sharing Tracy!

Hey Stacie - I've been following that plan for walking the half (mileage is the same) and have my first one in 11 days. Can let you know how it works out but I feel good about the distance.

Now if I can just get thru taper. Must..not...bike 2 hrs......

Hey to everyone!

Cecilia - great to see you back!

David - Welcome!

Thanks for all the info/advice on the salt. August in Chicago is generally like Florida. We're expected to be in the 90's with high humidity thru the weekend. Hoping it'll be a bit cooler next Sat.

That would be great! Please let me know how it works out for you!!! I hope you have a great time!

Stacie - Just be careful. There is such a thing as over training, which teh Penguin did several times. That's why he made the plan peak at 10. The plan works adn as you jump from week to week you will get a feel for that. I know it's hard to see now, though. Just be super careful, as I have seen so many injured by the time they get to tehevent. :grouphug:

Thanks Carrie. I will take this into consideration as well!!!

Great info you guys! Helps a lot!

Stacie

OK, WISHers, no running to report. I'm fat, hot, and waddling. But on the bright side, that's mostly pregnancy related. Before I found WISH, I was pretty much fat, hot, waddling and not pregnant! ;) Hopefully this cohabitation will end in about 5-6 weeks.

As opposed to Carter's totally organized parents, I'm a little lacking... starting with a real name for GoofyBaby. Here's the thing- my DH has "Miles" in his family tree (he's big on family names). I thought it was a great middle name because of the family thing and of course, it's totally appropriate for a GoofyBaby! Now DH (who finally got the Goofy/Miles connection- hello!) wants it for a first name. Suddenly, I'm thinking my interpretation is less subtle...

Two questions:
1) It's a given that this kid will think I'm a dork eventually, but is he going to think the Miles thing for a middle of the pack if lucky runner is incredibly dorky?
2) Does Miles even work with Smith or are the "S" sounds too much?

Opinions? (And by the way, WISHers got this name in my head in the first place!)

Kevin - That is a great philosphy! I so need to be moer tigger than eeyore!

HoosJen - Miles will think you are a dork from age 13 to 17 (Ok, maybe 22). This is the only time where he will even have a mentality that middle of teh pack isnot great. Before and after that, he will think he has a cool mom who has run many marathons, not to mention a marathon b2b with a half while pg. Except fro those darn teen years, he will think you are great!

2) Does Miles even work with Smith or are the "S" sounds too much?
I really like Miles for a name, and esp. for the hidden meaning.

I am on the fence about the "S" thing. It might be hard to say MilesSmith with the last letter of the first name, and the first letter of the last name being the same.

No matter what you choose - his name will be perfect! :thumbsup2

Jen... I like Miles. He was also a character in one Nicholas Sparks books. :goodvibes Unless you specifically points out the Goofy/running/Miles connection, he may not even pick up on it. MilesSmith... I think if you read baby name books or peruse baby naming websites, they suggest to say away from that, but really...it's up to you. Down here in the south, we run a lot of words together anyway so when I say it, I think it sounds fine! :goodvibes

Stacie

PS. I may be way off base here, but if I remember correctly, Nicholas Sparks pulls his names from friends/family and I think Miles is one of his sons. That would make him Miles Sparks right...again, w/ two S's. Heck, even Nicholas Sparks is the same w/ two S's.

I say go for it! :thumbsup2

Craig: I was just thinking about you! How's the rehab going--are you taking things easy and smart? You give such good advice about recovery that I just now you also take....;) Yep, you read it right--DOOD and I are going to be at water stops #2/#9 for the 1/2. Along with lots of other WIShers. :woohoo: (So for those of you who suspect he's a figment of my fertile imagination...). Don't you worry about seeing us--I'm just honored to be cheering you on. :thumbsup2

As for my shoulder-injury inspired gait, I was thinking more along the lines of Lugosi in Son of Frankeistein. Just call my Igor. I've NOT seen the Abridged Shakespeare Company in performance, only DVD; I imagine it's even funnier live. I, too, laugh at the tragedies. Yeah, there's a reason they call Troilus and Cressida a problem play--if I have to sit through a 3 hour staged reading of it, there's a problem!

Kristi: Great job on the 3 miles, and your determination to shave off seconds. I've yet to find a track close to me, but think training occasionally on one would be useful. What do you like about it? Ugh, I know what you mean by clothes-shopping trauma--every time for me.

Racey Tracy: Beautiful rainbow. I just love stories about Garmi. I feel like I know (him? her? it?). :lmao: I don't think I'd like to train after dinner, either. That's my TV- and movie-watching time! Missed the Randy Pausch special, though. (He's been in the news a lot here in Pgh, so I don't feel like I was deprived.)

Lily: Congrats on the retirement/quitting/can't take it anymore change in job status. You sound almost giddy about it. Does this mean more time in Disney? (Fingers crossed.)

Howard: If you're not a natural athlete, I'll be danged! But if you say so. Then I'm going to choose to believe you found running at the right point in your life--and you two make a very happy couple, indeed. (Almost as good as you and Cam.)

Jennifer: I probably knew that about your night races, didn't I? Forgive me, I have a really lousy memory. (Age, don'cha know.) Woo hoo for your 3.5 milers in 30 minutes. So speedy! :goodvibes And to double-up on your run, first one in the humidity and the second on the dreadmill...you're very motivated.

Terri: So how are you feeling about your tri training, other than the time? (I remain impressed by the time, myself.) You're coming up on the most intense parts of your training, I would imagine. How long is a tri taper? :confused3

Carrie: Yay that we'll be working together at the 1/2! That waterstop is going to be a blast. :woohoo: Even if I hope we're too busy serving the participants to talk for most of it. (All 1/2 marathoners--stop by and say hi, quickly!) What are you proposing to get Craig to notice us? I, for one, am not going to wear a grass skirt and do the hula. And no nakedness, not even if Jeanne says it's appropriate!

Stacie: I think several of the suggestions are appropriate if you want to bump up your mileage, and if you follow the general pattern of increased mileage followed by an easy week I think you'll be okay. I'm trying to plan in enough easy weeks into my extended plan to avoid the overtraining that Carrie so wisely noted. Me, I added extra weeks rather than cutting out short runs in the beginning, but that's because of my knees. I'm in training now and I do admit that I worry that I'll burn out on training (not overtrain, but the mental aspect) with such a long plan.

Angie: Now, repeat after me.
I am not an overachiever any more. I am an achiever. I am progressing toward my marathon goals slowly and steadily. I will not push myself too hard. I will remember to 'just run for the run,' as someone wise one said.
I just know you can do it!

Cecilia: You're back! Yay! :cool1: And in training. How did your tri go with your BIL--you did that already, right? And your DH competed too? (Or am I off base about things.)

David: It sounds like you've got a lot of running experience (not to mention determination to go on to the Kiawah loop a second and delay the beer gratification). It's great to have you hear so that we can pick your brain for advice!

Kevin: It sounds as if life has been busy and entertaining! Mercedes Benz Swimwear Fashion Week? Depends on the buffness of the models, mrowsa! ;) Great beach run. You make it sound like a good time, even with the heat and humidity. And thank you for the thoughts on being a Tigger runner. It's something many of us need to hear, I think. Especially me, who thinks Eeyore is a bit too cheery most days. :lmao: And the warning about the hotels for marathon weekend. I definitely needed to hear that. :scared1: (What was booked, btw?)

Liz: Yay for taking taper seriously. No 2 hour biking! I'll keep my fingers crossed for a cool weekend for your 1/2.

Jen in GA: Ooooh, the birthday is getting close! :woohoo: Me, I like Miles. I figure you can keep him guessing as to the genesis of his name. Just about the time he thinks the running connection is geeky, shift up on him. Introduce him to Kind of Blue and tell him he was named after one of the coolest jazz musicians of all time, Miles Davis. And then when he's a real stinker, tell him he was really names after Miles Standish. He'll probably roll his eyes at you for changing the story of his naming, but hey! At one point or another all kids roll their eyes, right?

Today's Shout-Outs:

Frank: I hope your biking has been progressing at a Tour De France level of satisfaction!

As for me: Managed to do my 5 miles today--before the rain hit and humidity subsided. I'm feeling the itch to go out and buy running gear after reading the latest issue of Runner's World. I've never been a skirt girl--go figure--and now I'm feeling like I've been left out of the loop. And YouBars? Anyone try those? I've tried making my own protein bars and they just don't turn out well. (No comments from the peanut gallery on my cooking skills or lack thereof! Just know there's a reason I eat so much ice cream.)

Hey all! How is everyone today?

I have a question... I am planning on doing the Run/Walk 1/2 Marathon plan from MfM. The mileage goes up to 10 for the Long R/Ws, but I'd like to maybe do 12 before the big 13.1. How exactly would you alter the schedule? This is the current 14 week plan's Long R/Ws:

3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 4, 8, 6, 10, 8, 5

Suggestions???

I always do a 12 mile LR before a half. I add two weeks to the program so after the 10 mile LR, the next week is 8, then 12, then taper (8,5).

Looks like this:

3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 4, 8, 6, 10, 8, 12, 8, 5

Baby naming rules:
1. What do the initials spell?
2. What horrible nicknames can other kids create?

We were considering Lucas for DD5 if she had been a boy...until I heard another kid at a bday party calling his little brother Pucas.

Cecilia...great to see you back!

Kevin...glad you popped in!

I vote for Miles Gu Smith. LOL, just kidding.:lmao:

Hi guys, just popping in to say hi!

This week is the big one in my marathon training plan - 20 miles planned for Saturday! Sadly 20 lonely miles, but that will give me plenty of time to think about...stuff... I'm not sure what is going on, but I've been crazy hungry all week. I scarfed down 4 pieces of pizza for dinner last night!

Umm, Leanna, you're not having cravings are you? :rolleyes1 Either you're seriously carb loading or hmmm :confused3

Just kidding.

Good luck with your run. It is normal to be really hungry when you are at your max mileage. Is this your last LR before the taper? If so try to do a dress rehearsal for the marathon. Wear the same shoes, socks, shirt, shorts ect... you are going to wear for the race. Also use the same GU's or whatever you are going to use for the race.

David

Hey, everyone! Just popping in to say a quick hello. Just started putting together my training plan for the half and I really appreciate everyone's input on getting in a last really LR of more than 10 miles. I need to do that for mental aspect of it.
As for me, I am presently training to train. My personal trainer promises me that the hell I am going through now to build quads and hamstrings will pay off in the long run -- literally and figuratively! ;)
So, this is what is has looked like so far this week:
Sunday -- rest, except for 100 crunches & 125 pushups
Monday -- 40 minutes personal trainer (upper body & core); 20 minutes nautilus leg machines; 100 crunches, 125 pushups
Tuesday - run 3 miles (just under 40 minutes); 100 crunches, 125 pushups
Today -- 40 minutes personal trainer (core & lower body -- OUCH!! squats with a barbell and squats with a barbell + weights and lunges and lying squats on the sled machine, and calf raises with dumbbells HURT!); also 175 push ups, 100 crunches, 50 back extensions on the ball
Tomorrow is 3 miles, though I'm not sure yet whether I'll be running them or crawling.

ETA: For a while it looks like my schedule will be 100 crunches & 125 pushups 7x/week; 3 mile runs on Tuesday and Thursday; LR on Saturday; 1 hour strength training Monday and Wednesday. I'll also try to get in some bike and elliptical time whenever possible.

I've given up on the scale. Just trying to be my strongest so that when training starts, I will be in better shape than ever. :cool1:

Kristi -- Congrats on your awesome track outing. :thumbsup2

All our new teammates -- :welcome:

JeninGA-- I think every kid doesn't like their name at some point. Miles is a wonderful name, full of dignity for an adult, but sounds fun for a kid, too.

Leanna -- Your training is awesome!

Kevin -- It is so great to see you here! I LOVE the quote about being a Tigger or an Eeyore. Thank you for sharing that. So glad you got in a great run on the beach!

Cecilia -- Hi, sweetie!

Debra -- I hope your 5 miler didn't give you any shoulder pain. We need to keep you healthy and positive. I don't know about anyone else here, but I really look forward to all of your kind words to everyone in your posts. Looking forward to finally meeting you in January! :flower3:

Craig -- How are you feeling, my friend? I hope you are still being smart and very kind to your leg.

wellesley princess -- Please do not overdo. You are really racking the miles up and you really need to give your body a chance to recover. Please do NOT take any lessons from my husband on this. :scared1:

Tracey - Thank you so much for sharing your rainbow!! Beautiful! :cloud9:

Terri -- I meant to say your Tour de Living Room totally rocked! :cool1: :worship: Hard to believe you suffered such a severe achilles tendon injury that many of us wondered what the future would hold for you. It is so wonderful to hear about how great you are doing!

Sorry to everyone I missed!

Debra - I like the track mainly cuz it's warm in the winter! But also, the Y has childcare, so I can drop Zack off there and do my thing, even in warm weather. I also have a shelf for my water and can take potty breaks whenever I need to. Now, dodging the dumb-dumbs on the track is a whole 'nother ball of wax!

Hey everyone! Don't forget (if you are interested) that tomorrow night is the Dean Karnazes movie.
I just bought tix for me, Chad & mom to go. I really liked his book, even though he is quite full of himself!

I'm jumping on here to give my opinion to Jen in GA. I'll be back later to post for real.

Miles was my suggestion, so I definitely think you should use it! Stephen and I briefly debated Miles for a potential baby name last summer before I got pregnant. But knew when the time came, we had to use the name we had picked out for years. Carter is named after my grandpa and also as a fun tidbit, my first Cabbage Patch Kid was named Carter. Not that we named Carter after a baby doll, it was a fun connection when I remembered that. ;) Anyway, I am way off topic!!

I think Miles is a great name, with an awesome connection for you, but it's not over the top obvious. I don't think Miles Smith sound bad together either, I just said out loud about 5 times and the double S wasn't noticeable at all. Of course, I am sleep deprived, so take it for what it's worth!

Okay, now that I'm on here, I might as well as post for real. Of course I don't have any training to report, I can't run or lift weights for 5 more weeks. I've been trying to take walks in the neighborhood with Carter, but we've been under a heat advisory for the past 3 days, so I don't really want to take Carter out in that. Hopefully we'll get some rain and the temps will cool down.

Claire--I am so glad that you are okay! I can't even imagine how scary that was for you. And I really can't believe that you were able to focus on taking your test after that. Hope your head is feeling better!!

Mel--It sounds like you had a great vacation! What part of NC were you in? I, too, need to hear the story behind you being the goat whisperer.

Angie--I am so proud of you for slowing the pace and the distance down. I know how hard that is for you, but it will pay off for you in January. By the way, how is the new job going? Although I guess it's not so new any more!

I know I missed people and I am sorry! I will try to post more tomorrow and get caught up. Okay, I'm going for real, Stephen is wanting the laptop, even though it is *my* laptop!

Krista

Hi all. Nothing to report today. It's a rest day (except for my crunches).

Debra - intense. training. :lmao: Nah, seriously. My tri training is ok. The event I'm training for is short (1/4 mile swim, 11 mile bike and 3 mile run). I'm trying to maintain a schedule working on each discipline and not letting WTO so much.

I was talking to a co-worker before the relay event I did last week. I was saying how I'm just not getting in enough training time. That work was getting in the way. His response was "Terri, I'm getting worried about you. You're letting work get in the way of your training. That's not like you." He was teasing me, but I told him, he was right. And I'm gonna have to talk to the boss about letting me get more training time;) Yeah, like that's gonna work.:rolleyes1

Leanna - Good luck with your 20.

Cam - Thanks for the kind words. The achille has been holding up great. It's the other one I worry about. Dr. said when one goes the other isn't too far behind. Whenever I finish a long run, the first thing I check is how the feet/achilles/ankles feel. Your schedule has me tired just thinking about it. You'll be in the best shape and totally toned!

Terri

Oh Jackie, you know you WANTED to do it. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :)

Hey all! Just a quick post from me. 4.17miles on the TM today--heat index over 105 today so thought it best to stay inside. Did 4 miles in 37:37 with the rest of the .17 and 3ish minutes as a cooldown. I was extremely tired--the heat and not sleeping well last night. And what is up with people coming into the gym when it's so hot out and turning the fans OFF! I seriously was dying in there today
