Wk of July 1--WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Afternoon All

I was in the Boulder Running Company this morning and purchased energy gels (with 25 mg caffeine I've never tried these before, maybe they'll help) and a wicked cool red t-shirt "Boulder Run 5430 feet." I think I'll show it off in October or January.

I also wandered by the shoe area and saw the new Pearl Izumi's. I'm certainly no expert on marketing but I think there is so much noise out there today that marketing types are becoming more and more desparate to get their message through. If that means outlandish and offensive campaigns, then they're willing to do it. In Boston this year we had 2 completely over the top guerilla marketing fiasco's, including 1 which almost shut down the city, and the other involved invasion of a national historic site, the Granary Burial Ground. In both cases the corporate marketing group had contracted out to a guerilla group, who went with the promotion, and the corporation ended up apologizing, writing large checks and looking totally foolish. Of course, you do wonder truly if "there is no such thing as bad publicity."

I also would bet my monthly salary that the decision makers in the PI case are in their mid-20's. Hey, in my late 20's I produced a 5K PR of 17 minutes flat which I am damn proud of, but now many years later I'd be lucky to do it 3 minutes per mile slower. I certainly still think of myself as a runner, although someone in their mid-20's might disagree.

Plus, and I've said this before, my 2 favorite activities, soccer and running, have always been about getting out there and doing it. I've played soccer on fields all around the country with players a widely divergent skills, and everyone is always welcome on the pitch. A player is a player. I've also run all over the country, and I've never seen a situation at a race where a faster runner treated a slower runner like dirt (expect when a group of slower folks are blocking the course, then I'm as likely as anyone to give them a shoulder or elbow). A runner is a runner.

I find this all puzzling, but perhaps I'm so old and slow that I'm not supposed to get it.

I did get onto the Boulder Creek path yesterday morning, started on the east edge of town, went uphill 31 minutes, then turned around and ran 29 minutes back down. The funny thing was the incline and lack of oxygen didn't really get my legs. They did, however, crush my diaphram, especially in the last 2 miles. That was a new one one me.

In the running store I also picked up an entry for the Copper Mountain 12K on July 15. 9700 feet up to 9975 feet. I'm terribly tempted to give it a try. The distance and elevation appear doable.

Enjoy the 4th everyone. Stay cool and train with your goals in mind.

Craig

Good day.

Thank you for letting me know that as a WALKER who last year completed 4 half-marathons in 4 states and started 2007 by completing a full marathon I am not worthy to purchase your merchandise. Be assured that I will NEVER embarrass Pearl Izumi by wearing/using any of your products.

Honestly, I find the elitist attitude exhibited in your latest advertising campaign to be very insulting to ALL athletes who put their shoes on one foot at a time and head out the door. Everyone out there putting in the steps deserves respect whether they are at a 8 mpm pace, a 10 mpm, or heaven-forbid a 16 mpm pace! Fortunately I've found the running community to be very encouraging and supportive, nothing at all like your ad campaign!

Finally, as a reminder, a lot of us joggers and walkers spend a lot of money on quality products. Now we know you don't want any of it - be assured that we have gotten the message loud and clear!

Sincerely,

Pat Welch

I like it!

Have a wonderful 4th of July everyone!!!!

Hi All,

Looks like I missed alot since last weekend. I just finished emailing Dave the link for the pics from the National Games from this past weekend.

I did a really hot, but nice 4 miler with Dave. Tomorrows plan is for 8. Can you say GOOFY training? Oh yeah!!!

Well, guess I need to try and catch up on the boards.

Erica

Oh, Dave!!! Fantastic!! I was just going to bug you about no photos!! You look awesome!!

For all my American buddies - have a wonderful 4th of July!!!

Dave- those are some great snaps!

I did 5 miles with my first podrunner download! Wow! I used a 176 beat and really worked at turning over those feet. I did it in 51:06! I'm going to practice w/ that speed a little and then move up to 180 beats!

Jogger here and proud of it. Well, OK, wogger....close enough. :teeth: :thumbsup2

Those PI folks have a lot of nerve, don't they! I have some PI cycle shorts that I wear on a regular basis and was going to wear at my Hotter 'n 'Hell race but I may have to rethink this. :scratchin

By the way, has anyone received a reply back on an email sent regarding this matter?

Here's one I'd like to send (but won't)...

Dear PI,

Thanks for clarifying what it means to be a true runner in your latest ad. I'm fairly new to this sport and I guess I don't fit the description. I think I fall in somewhere between the slow jogger - waddler categories. Since you seem to gear your merchandise toward true runners, I can overlook your products next time I'm in the market for shoes, tops, bottoms, and other jogger related items. Besides, I really don't spend much on this inexpensive sport anyway. I think I only spent close to $1,000 last year on such items - hardly worth your marketing efforts.

By the way, I'm probably not a true cyclist either. I'll need to rethink my cycling attire for the Hotter 'N Hell Bicycle race as I'm sure you won't want your name associated with my slow speed.

Thanks again for the clarification.

Hey WISH Team!

WWDave, great photos. It was magic and I saw!

Craig, glad you've moved into the running community there. I'm not sure of the feeling you are experiencing when running at altitude and I'm not certain I want to.

Here I sit with my pup who is terrified of the fireworks going on all around us. I am contemplating my strategy for Chicago. I have registered for the CDC half--even put it up on The Calendar. I am going!

Speaking of calendar, Tricia--I posed a question over there about your dates. If you can get to it.

Craig, if you register please make sure we've got you on The Calendar.

I do have The Calendar up-to-date as much as I've been given on that thread. Please contribute!

Back in the saddle again... 3 miles today, 45 min tho... yes, I am a wogger...

I emailed the link to dh... he and I discussed this... well first I learned that Hal Higdon grew up in Michigan City IN, AND dh has run with him!!

DH said about PI - they are mainly a baseball company, and they only manufacture ONE men's running shoe for around $135 - and something about Kevlar- dh thinks this company is out for "any publicity is good publicity, and they may be hoping to get national press on it - dont give into their hype!"

Which my thought began with "why would you as a marketer tell a company to aleinate the majority of the field?" really thinking about this aspect - there is way too much savy out there to run this campaign willy nilly, or maybe I'm looking for PI's alterier motive??

interesting... the things I dont know, sure could fill.... a libray? of Congress??? (most definately bigger than that!!)

There is a good Lake County IL Half Marathon Labor Day weekend dh is definatly running - I'll post as soon as info comes about - its with a Running store and a brew pub - so after the race you go to the brew pub for... beer and food!!

Hey guys! I went to my first yoga class this evening and I loved it!! I feel so relaxed now. I am probably going to go as often as I can to get my money's worth out of my unlimited pass between now and when it expires on Sept 2. Between running 3 days/week and bikini boot camp 2 days/week that is going to be a challenge, but I'll see what I can do....

Not much in the way of training to report. Did go rock climbing and kayaking over the weekend. Also did a short but very hilly ride w/ phil.

On the PI front, I just bought a whole bunch of new gear from them about a month ago. I like the clothing but the trail runners STUNK!! I couldn't give them away. I did mouth off about their ad campaign to our store mgr today and basically said that PI does not seem to market to the types of customers that we target!! :)

Leana, I would love to do a yoga class. I can't help but feel it would improve my wogging attempts. Let us know how it goes for you.

Good Morning Team.

Just stopping in to say hi!! Running late.

Will be back online later.

I hope you all enjoy your 4th of July parties.

Kim

Happy 4th guys. Remember that freedom is not free and we have warriors in harms way today. Whether you believe in the Iraq war or not, believe in our brave warriors who answer the call to arms, because they believe in us.

Just wanted to pop in and update on my training. I have had to take it slow this week because of sore legs but I was able to walk 1 mile on Sunday, jog 1 mile Monday AM and then about a 1/2 mile in the PM when my DH went out for his first run. Yes I am proud to say I got my DH out running. Of course he wants to beat me (and he always does - his legs are MUCH longer then mine!!) He ran a mile yesterday and then this morning we got out and did 2 miles together (well he ended up doing almost 2.5 because he didn't know where the turn around spot was even though I told him!! LOL) Still having issues with my calves but I got a couple books (The Complete Book of Running for Women and Jeff Galloway's Running A Year Round Plan - not sure if I like this one yet or not)

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!! and good luck to everyone with races today. Happy training to all others!!
