Wk of July 1--WISH Walking/Running Club

I was working and missed Molly on TV, what did she invent? Please share for those of us that don't know.
I am always happy to go on about my "Miss Molly"... :rolleyes1

If you go to abc.com, you can watch full episodes of their shows.
Launch their player and then choose American Inventor.
Molly is about 13:15 mins. in on the 6/20/07 episode.
She is on after the 'safe sex in a bottle' weirdo. :rotfl:
(and if you look closely, you just might see yours truly... :rolleyes1 )

Basically, she came up with the idea for a sneaker that plays music.
Sort of an ipod-type take off on something trendy like the Heelys.
They have a couple ideas in the works. One is the shoe acting like an mp3 player. In addition, she likes the idea of having lights on the shoe that flash to the beat of the music. Another idea she has is making a sneaker for younger kids that maybe counts, or says the alphabet.

I posted my 5K results on the other thread, but I'll briefly recap that I did the not-quite-a-5K (my Garmin says it was only 2.99 miles) in 35:15. The good news is that my average pace was much faster than what I have been doing in training. The bad news is that I decided, as I was lining up, that it would be a good idea to jog the first mile and then start my w3/r2 intervals. I was able to run the mile, but then I was pretty wiped out for the rest of the race.

I really believe in the w/r philosophy. I think it works and will get me across the finish line in Chicago without needing medical assistance. :) However, I also learned an important lesson about myself, which is that no matter how much I like the w/r plan, I am going to want to run that first mile. I think that will work if I just train for it. I am going to start running my first mile during my training runs and then start doing intervals until I finish. Does that seem reasonable?

CONGRATULATIONS!! :cool1: WTG runners... athletes!! (altho I admit to being a proud wogger!! ;) )

also want to take time to thank those that are serving, as well as the families that help make the sacrifice for Freedom.

I am so not ready for a half marathon. 5k as long as there are no sweeps, I think I can do this in 45 min - seriously. I hope I can improve - at times it just seems hopeless... and hot... and boring!! ;)

WW Dave

Great pics, you are quite the fit looking young man in the photos. Did you have to get a fake id inflating your age to get into the events?

And Erica, keep blowing WW's doors off.

Mel, Cam, Meghan, and Stephanie, you guys have come so far so fast, I'm most impressed.

I picked up a new gel yesterday, and the young man at the running store swore he much preferred them to gu's or cliff's. The name is Hammer Gel, and I'll have a report on its effectiveness soon.

I got out for a short one this morning before zooming to the airport to pick up Martha. I ran all around the campus, and although it's hard to see the incline, it is there. Running towards the mountains I was doing okay on pace, but when I was pointed away from the mountains I was going faster than I should have, and felt the lack of oxygen. I sure hope to get adjusted soon.

Thanks to all for reminding us about the price of freedom on this day when we celebrate year #231 since telling King George III to bug off. I've had the opportunity to walk through a few military cemetaries in the US and abroad, and I'm always humbled by the too-young men under the crosses and stars. The actions of those men, and the ones who came home, under conditions I cannot possibly imagine, are the proper reasons to call a person a hero.

Take care all

Craig

Good afternoon everyone, and Happy 4th of July!

3.1 on the TM. Nothing spectacular to report. Foot feels pretty good.

Congrats to all who raced today. Ya done good! :thumbsup2

:)

I did .7 today. Yes you read that right. The storm clouds were setting in so I bugged out the door to try to get in 3 miles... .5 into it the clouds literally dumped on me. I have never had that happen during a run before. Glad I was in the neighborhood because I cut across and got back home quick. I looked at the Garmin and I was running a 9:XX mile. Pretty funny. As I was running into the driveway DH was pulling out to come find me.

Craig - My brother got me some HammerGels for Christmas and I really like them. The flavors are decent and they seem to work just fine. I have tried the Vanilla, Raspberry and Apple. I really like the Raspberry one.

Once my belly settles from dinner, we are going out for a family bike ride. I get to pull DD4 in the trailer. At least I will get some kind of cross training in today.

Hi everyone!

I ran in a 5K with Cam today, the 22nd Annual Firecracker 5K in Wilmington, Delaware. This was also my third year to run in it.

Here are my 5K results from today:

Mile 1: 7:43
Mile 2: 8:21
Mile 3: 8:21

I finished with an overall, unofficial, time of 26:08. :cool1: The results were one or two people off so I am going by my Garmin time on this one.

2005 Results: 28:19
2006 Results: 26:10
2007 Results: 26:08

Judy - I didn't know that about ASICS.... how cool is that?

Craig: Good luck with the training and the local road races. Keep us posted on your results and progress.

meghan: Great job on the 5K!

Cam: You rock! :flower3: Keep up the good work, the 40 minute barrier will be toast soon. :cheer2: :woohoo:

Happy Training everyone!

:grouphug:

Sorry everyone, I am a total slacker in keeping up with the posts today and I only have a minute to post. I have a 3K tonight that I am going to totally blow off, since it is DS's 18th B-day we went to Tuckers Market Place for dinner, now I am not sure if you have them in the States but I just can't seem to stop eatting when I am there no 3K tonight.

Congrats to all the racers today!!!!

I promise to do better tomorrow.

Have a great evening all.

Kim

I had been doing so well with keeping up with everyone then last week LTO….going to try & do a big catch up here. I apologize to anyone I miss. Looks like I missed lots of fun last week.

Happy 4th of July to all the U.S. Wisher’s!

Belated Happy Canada Day to all the Canadian Wisher’s!

Martha – John took his work shoes to the running store & asked for suggestions. The guy that helped him at the running store also deals with PF (that is the issue John is dealing with)and suggested what he uses. He suggested Superfeet Green for John’s running shoes & since the innersoles cannot be removed from John’s work shoes he recommended the Superfeet Blue’s since they are thinner & would fit in the shoes over the innersoles that are there. So far they are working great. I hope you find something that works for you. Since you are away I will also PM you incase you don’t get to check back this far. Good luck on your half marathon this weekend.
Kim – Belated Congratulations to your son on his graduation! Loved the photos. Also, Happy Birthday to your DS. My DS’s birthday was yesterday. He turned 21….I don’t know how that is possible, it certainly doesn’t feel like 21 years has gone by.
Christa – Hope they were able to figure out what your DD is allergic to. Hope you had fun in HH.
Howard – Belated Happy 6 year Anniversary of Running! Love your race log. Very impressive! Congratulations on your 5k today.
Pat – Haven’t really thought that far ahead to next years races. Will have to start giving that some thought. Getting together for a race & wish meet or 2 sounds like fun.
Nancy – I always feel more motivated too when I’m checking in. I’ve been trying real hard to keep up, but it’s not always easy.
Denny – Good job getting some runs in. Have fun house hunting.
Laurie – Great job getting back on track.
Terri – pixiedust: that you can resume normal training soon.
Kelley – pixiedust: for your foot.
Tricia – Way to go getting DH out walk/running. Hope the sore legs are feeling better pixiedust:
Lily – Thank you for keeping up the race calendar. I need to get over there & update mine & John’s races.
WWDave & NEBill – Funny jokes!
Sunny – pixiedust: :grouphug: that the spinal cord stimulator alleviates your pain.
Carrie – Glad to hear your runs have been pain free :cool1:
Dona – New toys are always fun….enjoy the garmin.
Stacey – Hope the knee is feeling better. pixiedust:
Cam – Wow! Like everyone else said, you look GREAT! :thumbsup2 And great job getting everyone motivated to do those crunches. Congratulations on the 5k. Nice improvement on your time. You’ll get below 40min before you know it.
Lynnda – Good to see you back posting. pixiedust: for the PF & finding some time to get out for a walk. Enjoy your trip to SSR.

Judy – pixiedust: that the doctors & hospital get their acts together so you can get the surgery over & done with.
MSDave – Enjoy the new shoes.
Dana – Great job running 5miles with both boys in the double stroller. :worship: Congratulations to Michael on how well he is progressing. He’s doing GREAT!
Kristi – Hope you are feeling better. Congratulations to Molly. That is fantastic news. I will be sending her lots of pixiedust: :goodvibes that the meeting goes well.
Anne – Glad to see you back posting. We’ve missed you.
Craig – Hope your body adjusts to the altitude quickly.
WWDave – Love the photos. Congratulations!
Disnutt – The podrunner sound pretty cool. I’ll have to check it out.
Susie – Welcome back. How was your trip?
Melissa – Rock climbing, kayaking & a hilly ride???? Sounds like XT to me.
Vic – Loved the link. Thanks! Glad your foot is feeling good.
Mel – Nice run. You are definitely getting speedy. I don’t drink Gatorade but I know I should really start again. Whenever I first start drinking it, it doesn’t agree with my stomach. But after awhile my stomach does seem to get used to it. I just have to then keep drinking it or I have to start all over again.
Steve – Hope things calm down for you at work.
Krista – Hope work calms down for you too. Enjoy the new running shoes.
FLBill – Way to go getting out there before the rain. Have fun at Disney.
Erica – Congratulation on the awesome 6.2 miler.
Jen – Strawberry picking sounds fun. Sorry you didn’t get too far on your run before the rain hit. Have fun on the bike ride tonight.
Stephanie – Congratulations on the PR.
Meghan – Congratulations on your 5k

I had seen the PI ad in RW & couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Their website is so much more unbelievable. I don’t own any of their clothing & I certainly never will now. The letters that everyone are writing are great. I will be coming up with something to send them too.

As for me….Monday I got 40min walking on the TM at the gym then did 35min on the weight machines & lots of stretching. Tuesday was a rest day so we could celebrate Sean’s (DS) 21st Birthday. Took him out to buy him his first “legal” drink at lunch, then made him filet mignon for dinner before he headed out with friends. I still can’t believe my baby is 21. I certainly don’t feel old enough to have a 21 year old. :lmao: Today we hit the gym. Did some running intervals on the TM. Hip felt good. It has gotten a bit tight & sore while sitting this afternoon & tonight, but as long as I keep stretching it is ok. Ended up doing 3.0miles in 41:30 (including warm-up) for a 13:50mpm. I’ll take it since I haven’t really done any running in almost a month. Then hit the weight machines for about 30min then lots of stretching. Thanks to Krista & Cam posting about their strength workouts & crunches, I have been doing the weight machines at the gym for 2 weeks now. Doing 30min a night 3 times a week, hitting machines to cover all the muscle groups. It really feels great. Thanks Krista & Cam for the motivation!

Hi folks, I just got back from my 2 miler. I went to a new pathway and rather enjoyed it - running along a golf course mostly. I finished in 21:34 for a 10:47/mi pace. Tomorrow I'm golfing in our annual SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) golf tournament, and it is going to be a hot one... After that I'll be taking Friday and Saturday as rest days. Friday is a day off for us here in Calgary. The Stampede officially kicks off on Friday with a parade through downtown, so most businesses give you the day off. So that makes for a 2.5 day work week!

Have a great one guys!

Leana enjoy your long weekend!!!!

Karen, I know it goes way to fast I can't believe he is old enough to vote:scared1:

Workout question alert!!!! What strength exercises do you all do for your legs?? I may have asked this before but I have in my head that because of my walking I don't really need to do a leg workout but I think I am wrong in that thinking, and with my first 1/2 12 weeks away I am afraid of risking injury and not having enough time to complete my training. PLease share your training.

Kim

Hi everybody! I am sorry I have been MIA, but it has been a crazy summer. We just sold our house and I am trying to get all my ducks in a row for a cross country move in 3 weeks!!:scared1: (well I guess it is really down country since we are moving from MA to SC)

I am training for the DL half 5 days a week and I am averaging about 11:30 miles, I am really excited about that

I try to pop over here every so often and read some of the threads when I can, and I wanted to say hi to everyone today  Happy training everyone, enjoy your summer!

Becky

Wow, just when I think I've done a halfway decent job of keeping up, I see a monster post by Karen and am humbled. :)

So glad to hear that everyone is finding time to get in some kind of workout or has a great excuse not to (like rain or a great celebration).

Just wanted to cross-post this from the race reports thread:

Okay, I have more news to share. Ready for this? I WON a trophy!!!!! I wasn’t there to hear my name announced or to receive it, but it is right there on the official results webpage!!! Third place among the walkers! I’m still not sure I feel right registering as a walker when I jog parts of the race, but I think I am still only jogging 10-20% of the time, so I also wouldn’t feel right registering as a runner (though someday I hope to really feel that I am a runner — right now I am thrilled to be an “athlete” at any level).

My first trophy!!! WOW! I didn’t expect it to mean so much. After all, I’ve finished 2 half-marathons, a full marathon, 2 15k’s and probably 20 5ks. For some reason – this means a lot.

Cam that is AMAZING how wonderful for you. Runner, walker, jogger, wogger....whatever the word you are definatley a ATHLETE!!!!!

So proud of you!!!!!!

Hi Kim! I have some workout videos that I really like called The Firm. They have a step that you use to do step ups on and squats with weights. Since I've been incorporating hill work into my training I actually minimize how much I'm working my legs though. If you do hill work, then lower body weights the next day, then run again you haven't given your legs a day off. I pick some pretty intense hills to go up, and it really works your legs out well. I'm interested to hear what others have to say too though!

One of my girlfriends here at work really wants to get into running, but she can't seem to get into the groove. She felt as though she wanted a race to train towards, so now she's heading to the Ryka Iron Girl in Seattle with me. It will be great to have a buddy there to share the experience with, and hopefully once she sees how much fun the races are, she'll be hooked! And of course a girl weekend away can't be a bad thing....!!

Well... today was supposed to be a 4 miler, but....... I think we had a little bit too much fun at our BBQ last night. I woke up this morning severely dehydrated with the migraine to prove it. I swear I didn't get drunk last night, but we were drinking beer from probably 5 pm till 11pm, so there was no way being as dehydrated as I was that I was gonna run this morning. I'll probably put my 4 in tomorrow, then my 7 on Saturday. I don't want to scrap the run entirely. I have had to do that too much lately with all this rain.

I hope that everyone had a good 4th!

Cam - Congratulations on that trophy!! How cool is that!!

I'll let you know wether I actually make it out there for that run tomorrow morning!!

Dana

Good morning everyone. Yesterdays 6 mile walk was difficult even though the pace was an easy 13:21 mpm. This morning I woke at my normal 5:30 and my legs felt sore and tired. So all the signs of needing a complete rest day. I went back to bed and slept till 9:00. Funny how only an athlete would think of a work day as a complete rest day.

Dear, Pretty Princess, Erica is never going to let me forget that I had to ask her to slow down for a while.

Kim, I do hills for strength training for my legs. I believe that theory: if you are a walker or runner then your training should be 90% walking or running. The rest of my training is stretching and calistetic type exercises. I will usually play in the pool after walking on hot days. I will get spells where I swim laps but mostly just do thinngs like sprints with a high knee lift in the pool.

Also Kim, yesw we need a dinner plan for the Thursday before the TOT. We are also doing the Liberty Tree dinner then the MNSSHP on Friday.

This is an example of what it was like trying to find our way around in Louisville:

Have a great day y'all, stay strong and stay out of trouble.

Greetings all -

Well, I still don't know what I am doing about my surgery yet. I'm settling it today, one way or the other. This is ridiculous. :headache:

No training yesterday but today I did three miles on the TM. It was so humid it was disgusting!

Cheryl - Are you lurking? I thought of Matt so often yesterday. Everytime they had anyone from the military on TV saying hi to the folks back home I watched to see if it was him. Of course, I have no idea where he is, but I was hoping to see that great big smile. I hope he is safe and coming home soon. :wizard:

Steve - YAY! I'm so happy to see you here!:yay: EXCELLENT letter to PI. I love the end!

Krista - Excellent letter! :thumbsup2 I can tell you were mad. I really hope they take the time to read all these letters and realize what idiots they have been.

Cam - That is fabulous!:woohoo: I'm very very proud of you! :worship: A trophy...I am incredibly envious....

Howard - Phew! You are sooo fast! :thumbsup2

Karen - A belated Happy 21st Birthday to Sean! :cake: What, did you like have him when you were ten?

WWDave - Great pictures! :thumbsup2 Congratulations!
