Wk of July 1--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi all!!

Trying to catch up a bit.......

Mel-- Great job with your run under the conditions!! :thumbsup2

Kim-- WTG on registering for Scotia!! I have GOT to get my training in gear... otherwise I'm going to collapse into Lake Ontario....

Kristi-- Feel better soon!!!

Meghan-- Re: GU for walk/runners-- I think it's just as important to suppliment whether you are walking or running or walk/running. It may take a little more effort to discover how often to take them, but they will help your performance. (Personally, I am an every 5 miles guy, and I take them on any run 6 miles or longer.)

Colleen-- Now, if you'd have had Alexander Keith's, you may ave had one uninvited party guest from Michigan

The PI Ad Campaign-- I have to say, I think it's remarkably effective. Until a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea PI made running shoes and now everyone does! It's pretty clear that they are trying to make a name for themselves in the market by being provocative and it seems to be working. Whether that translates into sales, I don't know. The Pearl Izumi marketing people may not be that dumb after all-- they found a sentiment to tap into and it just may work. Even on these very boards I have seen over the past few months some subtle (and not so subtle) anti-"runner" generalizations and comments--- even though I would hardly call any of us "elite" or "elitists." As distasteful as the ad might be, it'll be interesting to see how effective the campaign is.

I have got to get my rear in gear with Scotia a little over 12 weeks away. :scared1: :faint: Some rethinking of strategy and recommitment is in order me thinks.....

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Ewww yuck.....falling into Lake Ontario...I think I would take my chances with falling into traffic.:lmao: Sorry, I shouldn't say that, haven't been to Lake Ontario area for many many years but the water use to be horrible and smelly. We are going to Kew Beach for the Jazz Tune Up 10K on July 29th so I can check out the water then. Are you in Toronto that weekend??? If you don't want the shirt it is a free run.

Good Morning team. Last night I went out for a run with my partner Sadie (dog) and we did a nice 3 miles. Oh it went so well. I decided to slow it down since we are early in the week and I didn't want to flare up my PF. Well I did run3/walk2 (haven't done that in a long time) and my pace was actually 13 minute miles. I am a slow walker and with that much walking, I was impressed with my pace. I think my run segments were faster than normal. And I had a lot of steam left in me, but I needed to get the girls to bed. Sadie was pooped after 3 miles, so I really do think my running was faster.

Cam - That picture of you looks awesome. You look so great and definately thinner than when I saw you in January. Keep up the great work!!!

Finally! For the first time in 2 months I didn't have a stonker. I finally got back to my "normal" 5 mi pace this morning (12:55). Feet still bothering me, and I'll have them examined, but at least I didn't hate my workout this time.

DS is gonna try out for cross country. Some of the kids run with a local club during the summer so DH and DS joined in for the first time last night. DS enjoyed himself, thank goodness. But, DH said he observed some severe pronation on both of DS's feet and a little duckiness on his right foot. (He gets the ducky from me.) Ugh. I'll take him for a good shoe fitting on Thursday.

Have a great Independence Day everyone.

Please give Lynnda and Billy and Timmy big hugs for me!

:goodvibes Thanks Cam!!!

I feel a bit odd posting to this since I am still being a huge slacker in the training department, but you all are such great motivators! :thumbsup2 I really want to get out and walk tonight in between raindrops and Bill's training. I'm still dealing with plantar fasciitis in my right foot, coordinating schedules, etc, but I need to stop with the excuses. Actually I read the PI article last night and got so annoyed and angry, I'm ready to do something! I'll let you know if the walk happens... ;)

The boys are doing well. Billy is very ready to get back to preschool, but is keeping busy with swimming lessons and helping Mommy. ;) Timmy is 3-months old today - I can't believe it has gone by so fast! He is growing like a weed and is a wonderful baby!!! :cloud9:

Keep up the great work everyone! I LOVE to read the training and race reports. You are all athletes and RUNNERS (and WALKERS)!!!! :thumbsup2

Have a fantastic fourth of July!!! We're heading to SSR on Thursday for a little vacation - yea!

Morning everyone! Whew, yesteday was a busy day! We had the day off in lieu of Canada Day. I did some major cleaning around the house, including a carpet steam. Calgarians must love to clean carpets on long weekends because I went to three grocery stores before I could find a unit to rent! So after all that XT I managed to go out for a 4 mile run. I moved my runs to Monday and Wednesday this week so I could go to yoga tonight, then I am golfing on Thursday and wasn't sure what shape I would be in for my last 2 mile outing before the big race. Anyhow, I hit a new pathway in a new neighborhood and it was really nice. Lots of rolling hills, greenery, and I was even rewarded with a couple of deer sightings, plus lots of birds and ducks to look at and listen to. Luckily neither of the deer decided to knock me over! Anyhow, I finished in 46:13 for an 11:33/mi pace. My left knee had a couple painful moments - I think it may be from the downhill running? Wednesday I'll try to head out somewhere that is flat.

Oh, and I tried out a new running skirt last night - the New Balance Bonita Run Skirt in lime green. I liked it, although I think the waistband would have a tendency to roll down a bit if I wasn't wearing a waist pack. Supposedly the shorts underneath are compression shorts, but they didn't feel that way to me. The shorts did creep up which didn't bother me, but you would need to be aware and use some Body Glide. I liked the a-line shape of the skirt. Definitely will go into the rotation for my running gear.

Have a great day guys!

Laurie -- Just a teaser. Be sure to bring a camera, no matter what. I really regret that I followed the posted signs. There were soooo many cameras and I missed the chance for some great pix! This one was taken with Howard's cell phone:

Ughh. I was really sore yesterday from power cleaning on Sunday. Sad. Plus, I still had more to do last night. So, when dh canceled due to his migraine, I used my running time to look for a new top. Priorities, I know. I don't know how I'll get a run in before Friday, when we do our long run in an effort not to kill ourselves over the weekend with water skiing and tubing. Plus, we were supposed to bike tomorrow, but that looks like it's not an option now either. Batting 1000 here. :guilty: And I wonder why my legs are feeling week....

OK, here's teh address I foudn to send feedback to PI.

info@pearlizumi.com

Off to write my letter. Loved teh ones I've seen!

OK, here's my letter:

I belong to a group of 100+ people that have motivated each other to run and walk marathons. I'm sorry, think what you want, but if you've gone 13.1 or 26.2, you are a runner! Many of these people have over come a lifetime of bad eating habits and no exercise. For the first time in their lives, they are athletes. They ARE runners!

While I have great respect for elite runners, I have more respect for people who have overcome a lifetime of put downs and people who say they can't and have done more than they ever dreamed possible.

By your definition, though, they are half-assed and not worthy of wearing your clothes or shoes. I'd just like to let you know that you don't have to worry, though. None of us will be wearing your clothes or shoes again.

Now that you have alienated 90% of the RUNNING community, I hope you can rest easy knowing that only the elitist, not necessarily the elite, will be buying your products.

Greetings Racing Team -

I'm so behind in posting. I know I've missed so much. :upsidedow

I still have no idea if I am having surgery Monday or not. :confused3 I can't get the two doctors and the hospital to agree on anything. Now, just today, my doctor's office calls and says I have to go to the hospital for a chest x-ray before surgery. My podiatrist's office didn't tell me that. Apparently there are all these new procedures at the hospital I am going to. No one seems to know exactly who is supposed to do what. :headache:

At any rate, this morning I did 3 miles - yes, on the "conveyor belt", so I guess no Pearl Izumis for me, hu? My foot didn't hurt but now my ankle is starting to hurt again. I don't know why I didn't have ANY of these problems when I was training for the Half. I'm falling apart. :guilty:

I don't think I posted yesterday that I did six miles on Saturday. They were actually pretty good. I went to adjust my Garmin on my wrist and hit a button and I don't know what I did but I reset it. So I have two sets of splits. Geez. I didn't bring them in with me but I'll tell you this: There was one mile that was 10 something. :thumbsup2 OK, it was on the flat and part of it was slightly down hill. But don't mess with the fantasy. I don't often see 10 anything on my Garmin.

Mel - Great letter! I was thinking that we should all contact Rodale and tell them what we think. That was a good idea.

Sunny - I hope this works for you. You really deserve a break.

Martha - Oh I think I missed you but I'm sending you :wizard: for your race anyway. I'm sure you'll do great!

Bill - That's the problem with skimming. Sometimes I read things wrong too, and once in a while it cracks me up.

Howard - Excellent training! Did you know this cool fact... "The company name ASICS is an acronym for the Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano" which translates into English as "Sound mind in a sound body".

Kristi - How are you feeling today? :goodvibes

Cam - Yes, I concur with Sunny! Girlfriend, you look HOT! :woohoo: I was thrilled to be your date last Saturday night. Especially with you in that cute hat!

Kevin - I agree the campaign has created a buzz, but to me, it's all negative. What good does that do? What's next? :confused3 That we aren't good enough because we're women? (OK, maybe not you, but you know what I mean.)

Hey, there's Lynnda! Ohh, have a great trip!:yay:

Good Morning TEAM:

Yesterday I got some new shoes!!! Fleet Feet fitted me in Nike Pegasus. It's my first time in a Nike shoe, but I was willing to try something new. They felt good, and I did a 5 mile run in ~44:30 min/8:55 mpm pace.

This morning while the thread was locked I spent the morning sending e-mails to Pearl Izumi, Runners World, and my local Fleet Feet store (which sells Pearl Izumis). Here's the e-mail I sent to Pearl Izumi.

Dear Sirs:
I have found your "We Are Not Joggers" ad campaign to be demeaning and insulting. Yes, I am a runner (albeit a slow runner). I completed my first marathon in January of this year. Yes, I am slow - currently running 9-10 mpm, and I was even slower in January running 11 mpm for a 5 hour marathon finish, but I am a runner. I am proud of setting a goal and training for over a year to meet that goal. I am proud of finishing my first marathon. I am proud of being an example of healthy living, running, and fitness to my family. I am currently training for my 2nd marathon, and I have an ultimate, lifetime goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. Yes, I am a runner, even if I am slow and listen to my iPOD while training.

My proudest moment so far in running is the fact that I inspired my daughters, ages 6 and 9, to train for and complete their first 5K. They trained 3x/week for 8 weeks for the race, and my 6 year old daughter was the youngest finisher of the race. In this age of childhood obesity, I am very proud of the fact that they could see the joy I get from running and racing, and that they wanted to join me on the run. They are runners too.

I use a Pearl Izumi long underwear tights and shirt for my baselayer training in Rochester, NY all winter for my January marathon. I have loved your product. It has worked very well, lasted a long time, and I would have purchased more of it. I will not now that I know the exclusive, elitist attitude of your company, and I know you do not want customers like me. I will be sure to inform all of my running teammates of your elitist attitude, and suggest they do not purchase your products as well.

I wish you well on your business model of catering to the elite athletes. Unfortunately you will miss out on the vast majority of runners out there.

Sincerely,

David Parfitt, Ph.D.

Like everyone else I sat here in shock after reading the PI website. I even sat and read the entire thing to my DH. One of the comments that really irked me was the one about the jogging strollers. Listen.... I want to see them pushing a 55 and 35 lb set of kids in a double jogging stroller for mile after mile. That's what I did today, and believe me I was RUNNING, and huffing and puffing... but I was RUNNING.

Today was 2 miles with Michael in 33 min. Then 5 miles with both boys in the double stroller, which kicked my behind. In 44:37 an 8:58 mile. No running tomorrow, it's the 4th and darn it we are cooking out on David's new grill and drinking a few too many beers. Thursday I have 4 miles planned + a mile with Michael.

Just popping in with a quick training update. Last night I did 48 minutes of w3/r1.

mile 1: 12:53
mile 2: 12:53
mile 3: 12:43
and .83 mile: 10:35 (12:42 pace)

total distance: 3.83 miles in 49:05 and my 5K split was 39:35!

I bunch of people in my office just decided to do the local 4th of July 5K tomorrow and I am going to join them. I am going to treat it as my training run because I am supposed to do 40-something minutes of w3/r2. My goal is to finish in less than 40 minutes, but we'll see what happens.

I just walked 3 miles in 42:xx. Not too shabby since I've been sick.

The BIG NEWS!!!!
Remember my niece Molly and her sneaker invention & being on the American Inventor show???
Ok, so how could anyone forget with me talking about it so much? ;)

Well, Puma - yes, the sneaker company - just contacted my sister!
They have been trying to track Molly down for two weeks. They love her & her idea!
Long story short - Molly is going to Boston to meet with them sometime next week!
:woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay:

(and thank God it wasn't Pearl Izumi's people calling! ;) )

Kristi - that is amazing!! Congratulations to Molly!!!!!!
