Wk of July 1--WISH Walking/Running Club

I only get the 4th off, but it's still nice to break up the week...

I got in about 5 miles on Sat, in a little over an hour...my battery in my Garmin died towards the end, so I'm not really sure, but based on the last time I looked at it, I guessed at my totals. I feel like I'm doing better, running a bit more often, but my times aren't improving yet. I'm not going to stress over it YET, but ??? I just really hope I can get there..

Hey all... I only get the 4th off this week, but I guess I will take any day I can get. I hope to maybe get a run in??? My run on Saturday was interesting. I forgot to mention that for the first 5 miles I ran to each mile mark, then walked 2-3 minutes. So those were nice long runs I did, even tho they were quite slow. Remember I am trying to enjoy running and not push myself to extreme madness!!!

My allergies are so out of wack. Tho they are predicting rain today and maybe tomorrow. It is very dry here! I was hoping to take my girls strawberry picking because the season is almost over.

Carrie - I didn't bring water on my 6 mile run, first time ever. I knew that once I got to the trail which is one mile, I could get a drink. But then I ran 4 miles without water and thought I would die. Guess I learned my lesson. I didn't think it was that hot out there, but I did enjoy running without my wait pack for once!

Martha and Craig - Enjoy your time in CO together!

Sunny - Good luck with those treatments, I really hope they help!

Dave - PF is feeling better today, but so far I really haven't been able to make the tenderness go away completely. I need a magic stretching machine to just yank on that tendon and make it longer. It's only my right foot, so it's quite annoying!!!

Well, I had a 4-mile stonker on Saturday. Was supposed to be cool, and it was cold in the house (without A/C), so I didn't ake water or my sponge. Yeah, well, the weather people lied! My pace stunk and my legs were dead and I had a headache the rest of the way. I do need to remind myself that at least I'm not in pain. (WHile I was faster when I was in pain, it was a little much for me to handle.) Also, need to remind myslef that while it's nowhere near the pace I had, some people woul dstill be happy to be at that pace. ALso, 2 years ago, I had not run more than 4 minutes at a time. I would have been coming up to my first 2-ile all run on Saturday. SO, I should not complain.
Oooh, sorry about your stonker run this weekend Carrie. Uuugh, sounds like it was really hot out there. Good luck with your 50 minutes tonight.

Angie- Great job with your 5 miler on Saturday!!! Don't stress, your times will improve. Just give it time. Be patient young Skywalker...

Jen- Enjoy your time off of work. Good for you for really enjoying your runs. Good luck with the PF.

No training to report since I am still sick. And I've broken a 35 year record! I just got back from the doc & have strep! I never have gotten strep, even when my sister would get it all the time when we were growing up. And my Mom is a lab tech, so she would stick that swab down our throats at home at the sign of a sore throat. :rotfl:

So, the good news is that I stayed home from work today. And even though I probably could go to work tomorrow, I called out. I used the 'contagious for 24 hours' excuse. ;) It's really true, but I could have gone to work and just not coughed on anyone I suppose.

Chad now has the beginnings of a sore throat. So we are off to the doc's to get his throat swabbed before he leaves for work tonight.

Oh wait! I have xt today! We start Zack's swim class tonight. So, I will be in the pool for his class for a half hour with him. That's a little bit of something, right? ;)

Hi everyone!!

Thank you all for the well wishes for the Leadville race which is, indeed, this weekend. My Mother thinks she raised a couple of dumb daughters (her words exactly, not mine) but we shall be showing off the bling come Saturday night! And I get to meet up with Monte! I'm so looking forward to this.

Calcio: your family misses you too but the house has never been cleaner! It'll be nice to be away so I won't be tempted to clean something!

Laurie: thanks! Does Hal have a web site? I may go surfing to find it. I know, a lot of people have been talking about it, but not when I was needing the info! Guess I oughtta pay a bit more attention...

nepatsfan73: :lmao: that was pretty funny! How are your workouts coming along?

MSDave: you'd think I'd rest and relax but it's so easy to do all those things when no one is under foot or to tell me to sit down. It sure did feel good to sit, though.

Stephanie: ah! I forgot. Thanks for reminding me.

Kim: we only get the day off but many people take the day or so before or after. I'm taking thursday and friday off to be with my studmuffin. Happy Canada Day!

Sunny: still thinking about you! Let us know when the procedure will be.

Carrie: your pace is great! The weather will break and it'll be cooler sooner than you expect!

Jen: sorry to hear your allergies are whacky. We still have oak pollen coming out of the trees. It's coating the cars and just yucky. I washed the cars over the weekend and one was coated the next day. Ew.

Well, hopefully I will get in some speed work today. I won't be doing much the rest of the week but with Leadville coming up, I guess I'm in taper mode. I'll try to get out on Thurs and Friday to acclimate. I'll let you guys know how the race went!!

Martha - My pace is a good minute worse than the Minnie on good days right now and was almost a minute and a half behind Saturday for a whopping 4 miles. Thanks for trying, though. :goodvibes

Kristi - Oh no! Hope you feel better soon. lol. I got my first ear ache around 30. Seemed pretty darn odd to me.

Jen - WHat do you mean you're not trying to push yourself to extreme madness??? :rotfl:

Hi, everyone! Sounds like there is a lot of great training going on -- even those who have had stonkers were at least out there getting in their steps! :cool1:

I did 40 minutes on the elliptical Friday night, the first 20 at level 4, then 10 at level 5, 5 at level 6 and the last 5 minutes at level 7. Boy, that was interesting! Then I remembered the first time I got on the elliptical, more than 2 years ago and forced myself to get in 3 minutes. I was dying! :lmao:

No LW Saturday -- LOTS of running around for errands and a barbecue. I must admit to some serious XT Saturday night -- dancing like crazy at the Tim and Faith concert. Yesterday was mostly spent at work.

Still doing the crunches and push-ups. It makes me feel so great to know that at any given time, there may be other WISHers doing them too. :grouphug:

CDC is now only 5 1/2 weeks away and I can't remember the last time I got in any significant distance. I am starting to freak myself out. I HAVE to get in long runs every weekend between now and then or I am seriously in danger of being DLF, if not DNF.

Craig -- so glad to see you here!

Kristi and Sunny and others with illness or injury -- get better soon! pixiedust:

Denny - Huge apologies! I have been thinking of you, but it never makes it to my updates. :( Good luck with the house fixiing up and selling and finding a new house!!! I can't believe ytou find time fo anything else. You're probably doing some pretty good XT too. ;) HOpe all goes smoothly! 8 hours from WDW? Wow. That will be cool!!!

OMG!!!! HAve you guys seen this???

We Are Not Joggers

Penguin mentioned it on his blog. (Not in a happy way) Glad I don't wear their shoes. Never will now!!!!!!

Carrie--OMG I am sick! PearlIzumi can have the elitists (sp?)! I am going to send them an email--lot of good it will do--but good luck to them for continuing to stay in business if they don't want to cater to "joggers". What a load of crap! It makes me sad that they were one of the sponsors of the Women Run/Walk Arkansas race, but don't actually support the people the race was geared for.

Anyone in the market for some PearlIzumi shorts????? I have two pair that apparently I'm not allowed to wear anymore b/c I'm "just" a jogger!

I have one pair that I'm thinking of sending into skirtsport for their trade in discount. Grrr.....

BTW - Here's teh Penguin's take on it adn there are some other good replies there too.

here's the email I'm sending to the company

I am truly disappointed that Pearl Izumi would stoop to this level of advertising. Up until this point I had a relatively positive view of the company. From the products I had purchased in the past, I was more than likely to return to the store to buy others. But not now. Apparently, I'm just a "half-a$$ed" jogger, listening to my MP-3 player on the treadmill who isn't worthy of your products. I am also extremely hurt that Pearl Izumi would put it's name as a sponsor of a local race here that caters to getting normal, everyday women off the couch and on the road, even if that means walking (which I'm assuming is worse than "jogging") How can Pearl Izumi sponsor something that it believes is hurting the sport? I will say that from here on out Pearl Izumi has lost my business, and I will not ever speak kindly of that brand again.

What ever happened to the old advertising commandment, "Thou shalt not insult the customer"?

Geez. If joggers are second class citizens, what does that make me and my fellow walkers?

I predict a dramatic decrease in iP sales is on the horizon. Can anyone say, "backlash?"

Great e-mail Stephanie!!!!

Rough day yesterday. It's all stepchild related. :sad2:

I saw this ad in RW magazine too. It really ticked me off. I just sent them this:

"Your new ad campaign is insulting. I may not be as fast as apparently your marketing people think they are, but I cover a hell of a lot of miles. I'll be doing it in my ASICS Kayanos and my Champion running shorts, as my PI stuff is going in the trash. I'm really very annoyed about this. You just lost a good customer."

OK, to be honest I really do love my PI running tights, so I'm not throwing them out (Plus they were like $98.00 and I've worn them three times.) But I will NOT be buying anything else from them. And if I ever see them at an expo or race I will tell them exactly what I think.

I heard about this a few weeks ago on the Complete Running site. Interesting comments from their readers as well:

http://completerunning.com/archives/2007/06/12/pearl-izumi-not-joggers/

I honestly don't own any Pearl Izumi clothing, but I think the elitist attitude is poor, especially when we live in a world with rising obesity and rates of heart disease. People need to be applauded for making the committment to a fitter lifestyle, and this kind of attitude is only going to set them back farther. I think the growing popularity of races, be it 5K, 10K, or a marathon, is a wonderful thing. Just because more people finish these races doesn't take away from the accomplishments of the speedy elite athletes, but it definitely adds to the accomplishments of us regular folks out there. I love seeing events with kids races, where they run with wild abandonment down the street. That is the kind of attitude we need to foster to promote our kids being more active. The goal isn't to win, the goal is to have fun....no matter how we get across the finish line.

OMG, Carrie thank you for bringing this to our attention, I couldn't even finish reading the article. I can't even imagine what they think of us who can "ONLY" walk 10K, 15K, 1/2 or full marathons.

WOW....

Stephanie Great email.

Hi Guys
I have been out of the loop for over a week now. I have had scheduling and internet problems, but hopefully those are behind us.

I did get in some running last week -- both planned and spontaneous (playing tag with grade school kids at Vacation Bible School at church counts as speed training, right?) Kids run constantly.

I did buy a new toy -- a special present for me with some extra supplemental insurance monies. I am the proud owner of a garmin forerunner 101  -- it's basic compared to later models, but is all I need currently. The virtual running partner is so cool I can't wait to try it. It's rained here all day, unfortunately, so hopefully I can give it a go tomorrow. I tried out the basic stuff on a walk/run with my little kids on Saturday, but hadn't figured out all the other buttons until later.

Thanks for letting me babble on.:goodvibes

Jen – Sadly for me, I think you will be running right past me if you are in the 12-13 range. I will probably be in the 13-14 range. I’ll cheer for you when you pass me though! :lmao:

Krista – someday I hope to be able to say that I can’t wait to run again. Glad you are enjoying those new shoes!

Jackie – I thought the race was pretty boring. Just when Dixon and Wheldon looked like they had something for Dario, the race was over. I’m not a Dixon or Wheldon fan, but it would have been nice to see a challenge for the win. They really need to add about 50 laps. The crowd looked GREAT on TV. It is very cool that you were in front of Marco’s pit. I just decided to go to the race in Nashville and I can’t wait to see my first night race!

Nancy – I have really been focusing on shortening my stride and taking short, quick steps. I am using podcasts from http://www.djsteveboy.com/podrunner.html to pace myself. Coach Jenny has some good advice (including a link to that website) about pace and stride length in her blog on the runners world website.

Sunny – I think your spinal cord stimulator sounds similar to something a co-worker had for his knee. It made a huge difference in his pain management until they were finally able to figure out a surgery that would actually fix the cause of his pain. I hope it helps and be sure to keep us updated!

Cam – I hear you on the challenge of working in the LRs. I had to take a couple of half days off later this month in order to make time for my 8 mile and 10 mile LR.

All this talk about Gu has me wondering when the walk/runners use it. Dave’s advice of taking one every 4 miles on runs of at least 8 miles makes sense for the runners, but is that really necessary for those of us who are doing more walking than running?
