Wk of Jul 30--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Kelly, Good for you!! I tried to add some wogging when I first started training and it just exhausted me. Now that I am secure in my walking, I may go back to mixing some in for the same reason..AVOID THOSE SWEEPERS!. But at a 13:24 pace, you have NOTHING to worry about!! :thumbsup2

And I take issue with your tag..my favorite color is ORANGE!! Nice to meet someone else who thinks it's a happy color!! :rotfl2: Anne

Good morning, everyone! Well, when I was thinking about posting I thought I should hold off since I was feeling so negative, but I seem to be in a much more positive mood now. :thumbsup2

First of all -- our WISH shirts arrived! party: Of course, I am at the office and won't get to see them until tonight, but Howard described them and they sound awesome. THank you so much to Carrie for coordinating the ordering and shipping. How awesome! And thanks to everyone who worked on the design -- Sunny, Dave, Lynne & all the other WISHers who provided input to a very successful product! I can't wait to get home to see!

Second -- our DL packets arrived today! Now that should be just the wake-up call I need! :cheer2: I can't believe that 6 weeks from now we will be in DL for the first time! Even more shocked to realize the race is 6 weeks from tomorrow.

So, before I had all that motivating good news, we went out to train this morning. DS13 (who leaves for 3 weeks of camp tomorrow) went with us to ride his bike. He and Howard did the trail and I stayed on the track. We were up until about 1:30 (DD had her first 1:00 am curfew night last night and I just couldn't go to sleep until she got home) and I was up at 6:30. UGH! Don't underestimate the importance of a good night's sleep!

The :sunny: was wicked hot on parts of the 1 1/8 mile track, even at 7:30 am and I was torn between two approaches:
(1) walk on the shaded parts to maximize my time there and run in the sun to minimize the time there; OR
(2) run in the cool shade and walk in the blistering sun.
Ended up walking most of the way.

I was very psyched to wear my tee shirt that I got for my birthdy from Sunny's cafepress website -- the front says "Marathon Walker" and the back says: "20 miles is a long way to walk; 26.2 is a life-changing experience". I felt like I was re-affirming my purpose for being out there and letting everyone know I had a good objective. Thanks, Sunny! Equally exciting is that the tee shirt is a women's XL and it was roomy on me! So, even though I have been so down about my weight loss plateau, reminding myself that I've gone from a very tight 3x to loose XL (and not a men's XL) on this journey is mood-brightening.

Anyway, sorry for going :offtopic:

So, back to training progress
cross-post from my journal:

Did an abbreviated training session this morning. I was scheduled for 4 miles but had done it Wednesday night because I was motivated then and wasn't sure I would be today. That might be why I couldn't force myself to do another 4 today. Mentally I felt I'd already done it and today was "extra". So, I did 3.5 miles and not at a great pace.
My splits:
mile 1 -- 14:59
mile 2 -- 15:05
mile 3 -- 15:28
mile 3-3.5 -- pace 16:02

I hope everyone else is having a great day and that you are experiencing milder weather that lets you enjoy the training! :grouphug:

Race report for the Bushwhacker 5k for DW and I!:

What started out as a very wet morning ended up clearing out just in time for the race, and the weather although windy was very nice in comparison to the last two 5ks we had ran together. It was a bridge run so the first mile was gradual downhill/flat, the second mile was mostly a loooooong uphill, and the third mile was a long downhill and then mostly flat.

So the numbahs... My previous times were 25:34 and 26:02 or so for the races in mid June and on the 4th of July. The second was slower due to crazy heat and humidity as one would expect. Her times were 32:03 and 32:24. We did a few track workouts during the month of july and stuck to our 3 times a week running plan, with a few long runs once a week as well. Obviously based on our previous times my goal was under 25, and her goal was under 31.

DW's splits:
Mile 1: 9:06
Mile 2: 10:09
Mile 3: 9:45
5k: 29:40!!!

My splits:
Mile 1: 7:31 :confused3
Mile 2: 8:28 (hill :furious: )
Mile 3: 8:00
5k: 24:37!!!

Smoked my PR since high school by almost a minute, and she blew hers away by over TWO minutes and twenty seconds!

We're ecstatic and now we're heading South to the 'World! Have a great week everyone! :cheer2:

Matt -- AWESOME!! Congratulations to you and DW!!!!! You both must be so proud of yourselves! :thumbsup2
Have a great time at WDW!!!! party:

My shirts came today.

Thank you Carrie for all your hard work and such a speedy turnaround!

I'm so happy you like it! I just added a new one that I thought might be too far out there and its already selling! It boggles my mind to think how few people would have clue to what the slogan means, and yet they are finding it! :cool1:

Might be a nice coutesy to those around you come December ;)

It looks best on the black shirt

Matt ~ Congratulations to you and DW for those awesome 5K times. :cheer2:

I ran 6.03 miles in 1:09:09 today on the Northern Delaware Greenway, a paved path through the woods between a state park and a state owned historical mansion and its grounds. The course is built on rolling hills, some fairly steep and long. The course also crosses three major roads where you need to stop, look both ways and listen, then cross. My DS was along on his bike and I paused many times to direct him which way we were headed, etc. So, my splits include those periods of no running.

Here are my splits:

Mile 1: 11:35
Mile 2: 10:46
Mile 3: 13:01
Mile 4: 11:04
Mile 5: 11:48
Mile 6: 10:32

My average pace was 11:28 per mile.

Not where I wanted it to be, but very good for the heat, terrain and level of rest I had before the run.

Craig: I will make sure the bear stays far from me in September and in January. As far as courses go, I am looking at my options. I will definitely be taking BUAD 840-050 Ethical Issues in Business Environment and possibly ECON 503-050 Economic Analysis for Business Policy. Sounds like a barrel of laughs, huh? Thanks for the note!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Howard

I just wanted you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am sorry for what you are going through. I wish you only the best! :grouphug:

Walked on my tm for 30 mins. today and did sit ups on my fitball...I feel good! Have a great weekend everyone :sunny:

I just have time for a quick drive-by, but I had a run today and I'm definitely making improvement. I was back on the track walk 1 lap/jog 1.25 miles and repeated that 3x. I did 4.78 miles total in 53:14 min or 11:07 mpm!!! First running bit was 10:08 mpm, 2nd running bit was 9:23 mpm, and 3rd running bit was 9:33 mpm. My right leg felt OK!!!

DD5 princess: went with me to do some training for our x-country race on Thursday. Her training consisted of hauling sand toys from the car to the long jump pit and playing with trucks and making sandcastles. It was very cute!

Gotta run...

Shirts arrived too, they look great! Very bright!!!

Yes! Very bright, indeed. People ALWAYS comment on my shirt from last year. The usual is "wow, what a great shirt, it's so bright!"

It's come to be my favorite color. :goodvibes

I have to admit, the arrival was a bit of a tear jerker. But unlike my RW, I did not throw them across the room!!!!

Dx was very loving and understanding at my tears. He said we should still go regarless of whether or not I run/walk one or both races. I know he's right, but that's a really hard one to face, too.

Thanks Howard, for your thoughts. Reading the course names of your choices, my thoughts are with you as well :rotfl2: I'm so happy for you, though. Going back to school will be great. I went back at 30 thinking I was going to be the oldest in my classes and was totally wrong. Adults have a much better appreciation for school.

Matt-- those are great racing reports for you and DW. Smokin' :smokin: high-school PRs-- WOW!!!!!

Hmmm, I'm thinking a new design involving a bear and sweepers might be in order :rotfl2: Last year didn't Helen have a port-john in the middle of a restaurant and MelR was involved???? I do recall some weirdness was going on!

Matt - Congrats on great times for you and DW!

Got my shirts today. They're great. I went out and did 5.4 miles today. Is it possible to hit the wall at mile 3?

I guess this was my stonker. I was all excited about getting out there today and I started off okay - not too fast. I alternated running and walking and felt okay up until about mile 3. Then my body just did not want to run. I tried to make a game out of it, but nothing seemed to work. I'd run about 25-50 steps and then have to walk. It was weird. I felt okay afterward. Tired, but not dead. Guess I'll have to chalk it up to just one of those days. At least I got the steps in. I'm gonna try again tomorrow.

Have a great weekend everyone!

First... my apologies for being gone for so long. I haven't posted much or run at all for the past week and a half. I am sure that I am REALLY behind on a lot of things.

So here's my story. About a week and a half ago, I started (excuse me if this offends anyone) burping and releasing gas in other ways ALOT. The burps tasted like I had eaten eggs, which of course I haven't. Then things got worse, I couldn't eat because I was too nauseaus (sp?). I couldn't run because I had no energy because I couldn't eat. The baby was sick too, he had diarhea and nausea for almost 2 weeks. Finally, when I couldn't function anymore I went to the doctor, and come to find out we had come down with Girardia (sp?) also called Travellers Diarrhea. It's a parasite that we probably picked up from the pool. Lovely, huh? There wasn't anything they could give me to get rid of it either, she basically told us that it works its way out of your system in 2 weeks. She gave me some Finergen (sp?) to get rid of the nausea so that I could finally eat, and I finally started feeling well enough today to get in a run. I feel like I have spent this entire year so far being sick, and let me tell you I have had about enough! Luckily, as I said I am feeling better and the baby is feeling better. Michael isn't doing so hot, but at least he felt good enough to eat dinner tonight. He's got to get better quick he is supposed to start school Monday.

So that's what has kept me away, but thankfully I am back and running now. I put in my scheduled 4 miles this morning, in 39m 03s. Not half bad for someone who hasn't run in more than a week. So it looks like I should be back on schedule. I also got my shirts in today!! I LOVE THE GREEN!! DH has his on now as we speak. I need to see if there is a way to get some shirts that color for my boys, and then I can make just a regular t-shirt for them to wear to be part of the "Scream Team".

I would love to find out who is planning on pacing about the same as me. I kept telling DH I was really nervous about running ALONE. It might be nice to have some company.

Dana

Happy day WISH Team!

Craig, whew! what a day you had there yesterday. Sure hope it is much better from here out. Hope that all you need to do is take it easy to allow that calf to ease up some.

Dave good to hear of your progress, DD's too. That must be cute! I know there is going to be some great memories there that will last and last.

Howard, I'm thinking you did great! Good that DS was there too.

Cam, sounds like you were wise to take it easy in the heat. No sense overdoing, just get those steps in.

Matt, great to hear of the news for you and DW. Have fun in the World.

monte, keep plugging at it! Good to hear you are continuing along.

Sunny, great to have you still hanging here. hoping you can be fixed and soon. I love your CafePress stuff. Got some coming my way...may have to go back! :teeth:

WISH Team uniform is coming along nicely. I really had a great time getting mail today.

Here is a link "WISH Team Uniform" pics.

I slept through my alarm 5:30 this a.m. DH and I went for a 2 mile walk this p.m. It was more stroll speed for me.

Some unhappy news...I tried to get a DVC room for marathon weekend. No rooms available. :sad2: Still exploring options.

Sunny - Yes the pre race dreams were all totally freaky!!

Matt - Congrats on the pr.

Carrie - I'm out of town, but i think my shirt is probably there. I can't wait to see it.

OK, tomorrow is definitely a rest day. Thursday i rode 30 miles, ran 3 and 1/2, Friday i rode 13 miles on the road on the PUSS and then in the evening ran 4 1/2. Today we did crazy stuff in the woods (mt. biking and orienteering for 4hrs and 45 mins!!!!!!) I'm ZAPPED! Maybe those bright green shirts i have coming will give me extra energy.

Drive by here! Did right around 15 miles this morning in 2:10. I say right around because it was mostly on trails and the garmin does not work on most of these - weak signal. This coming week only have 3 runs scheduled with a 15 or 16 miler for Friday before we fly out to the World for two weeks. Hope all are doing well with training and sendind PD to all who are in need.
