Christa - no garmin? how do you keep track of you mileage/pace?
The guy Bree and I call coach (he is her FIL) has a website with routes on it. I also have a GPS program on my computer that I can map out routes then go run them. Ron (the coach) has friends with a garmin. They have trouble with theirs b/c of all our trees. So I don't know if it would be worth me getting one. :confused3

I am thinking about the 1/2 for 2007. I have never done anything like this before. I haven't even told my husband about this yet. My sister and her husband announced that they were running the 1/2 a couple of years ago and then chickened out. I don't want that embaressment. I haven't even walked much in the last couple of years because of bone spurs. THey have eased up and now I am thinking about walking.

I just bought a treadmill because I usually exercise in the morning (Yes I am one of those crazy people who get up at 4:30) I am able to do 1.4 miles in 30 minutes to start but I am getting cramping in my ankle and shin. Do I need to stretch more?

I will not be just walking on the treadmill. I also will be riding my exercise bike on alternate days for approximately 30 minutes. Then I will be fitting in some strength training each day, different parts on certain days.

I am looking to lose some weight before I get serious about training in Aug.

Does anyone have any advise for me? How do I tell my husband?

PS I am also being checked out for an irregular heartbeat (It was just found a couple of weeks ago. Dr is surprised since I am 50 and they usually find this in younger people). The echocardiogram came back negative and I go for a nuclear stress test on Wednesday morning at 7:15 AM (that will be my cardio for the day)

Dona, Good luck with those tests. I am brand new so I have no advice but you sound like a lady with a plan!!! Congrats! (BTW, I'm originally from LBI, I see you live at the Jersey shore, lucky you!!)

And how to tell your DH? Well, since my DH told *me*, LOL, I have no first hand experience but I will say I think your DH should be pleased and supportive. I think it is a big goal to set and one that we can do!! My DH is thrilled with my decision to go ahead and try for this--and I know I will be better off if I go ahead and "just do it"!!

Welcome!

I have never even done a 5k and I registered for the Disney 1/2 for 2007 before I told my husband. Luckily he was leaving for his guys only ski trip in Utah (he goes every year). So it was easier to tell him I was going to Disney in January. :thumbsup2

There are quite a few of us newbies on the board. We are learning from a great group of veterans.

Please keep in mind that before you change/increase your exercise routine, you may want to get approval from your cardiologist. Good news that the EKG is normal, but they may want the stress test results before making any exercise recommendations. Remember to be aware of any shortness of breath on exertion or any chest pain. If you experience these stop the activity. If they don't go away call 911.

I didn't mean to sound as if I am lecturing, but I am a cardiac nurse -- I can't help it. :goodvibes

YAY!!! Thanks to Dave (and DING!) I just saved $87.80 on my return flight from Minnie weekend! Guess I'll have to book another trip to use those ticketless travel funds! (only $.50 of my original fare was refundable; the rest is sitting in the account to be used for my next ticket). I may just make it to WDW to see DD17 march down Main Street, after all!

I like your idea of another trip to WDW because of those savings. I'm thinking that if I could get a great deal from Raleigh, NC I would come down and do the Minnie as well.

I did speed work today. I HATE speed work :furious:

miles @ mph:

.5 @ 6.0
.5 @ 7.6
.5 @ 6.4
.5 @ 7.2
.5 @ 6.4
.5 @ 7.0
.75 @ 6.0
.16 @ 8.0 (I was aiming at .25 put pooped out)
cool down

A total of 4.5 miles
As far as perceived exertion goes, this run was twice as hard as my 9.5 miler on Saturday.

I've commissioned an EC to make me do speed work. My fast friend from the gym is taking me to the track when Spring comes. Oh what have I done??? :scared1:

Judy I have callouses on my callouses :rotfl2: I just don't look at my feet and its ok.

Sunny

Paul- running on the strip in Las Vegas would be really cool! I'm jealous...however, I still don't think it is cooler than running through Disney with the characters.

Judy- the Dremmel! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

21.25 miles on the bike today with maintaining a "cardic" training heart rate of 150 for 30 minutes. (Plus 20 minutes of slower biking) Maggie will laugh at this- because the whole time my heart was going that fast I kept on thinking how I give people meds to make their heart slow down when it is more than 120 for a sustained time and her I am MAKING mine go fast? It was just very weird for me. (Don't worry Maggie, no chest pain, tighness, or SOB) BTW- SOB is shortness of breath, not the other SOB :p

Ugh. Today was my first run since the Goofy. Due to some lingering pain from that adventure (probably compounded by the park touring we did for a week after the races) I've laid off for the last 3 weeks -- done some yoga, pilates, and other cross training activites -- but this was the 1st time out running again. Did 3 miles in 30 minutes but felt like I had gone at least 10 miles. Totally wiped. But I know that it'll get better pretty fast since I'm already conditioned -- just have to remind my body of that fact. Minnie's in 14 weeks so I gotta get moving again.

It's been so hard to get back in the groove. I guess I'm suffering a bit of a letdown from the races. And why not? I spent the better part of a year working towards the Goofy and it was over all too soon. I just can't get motivated to do anything right now. I've got a stack of work on my desk and a book proposal to rewrite and just cannot get motivated. Ugh. Whine, whine, watch TV, whine some more, do everything I can think of to avoid working, surf the Dis, whine some more. Yep, that's me.

I really want to do one of the races again next year, but I don't know. We're booked on DCL for early Dec. and I just don't know if there'll be money or interest (on DH's part) for 2 trips that close together. If I do one, I'm pretty sure it'll have to be the half because the cruise will coincide with those last long runs. And no way can I imagine doing 18 or 22 miles on a ship!!! Even if I used the treadmill I think it would kill me. Plus I'd like to volunteer for the full. I'll just have to see. Hopefully registration will stay open until at least mid-summer so I can better gauge the finances. But if not, for sure I'll be back in 2008 -- probably for the full then.

Well, off to work (whine) some more!!!

Disneefun - welcome to my world, I have exactly the same feeling, although I did finally break an hour's running yesterday - should really have done 90 minutes as I have a half on Feb 19 but slowly, slowly......I don't think it helps that it's 80+ degrees here at the moment and about 95% humidity.

I bailed on my tri training as well (aren't I motivational today) - not only did I have my potential friend squishy to deal with, there's a 6 metre great white in the harbour round the corner. I am aware that this means it has to swim here, but hey, it's six metres long, and it swims all day - how long's it gonna take it to paddle 60 miles. When I signed up for New Zealand they told me there wasn't anything dangerous - do you think it's too late to get the money back?

Am off to the gym to lift weights today - got to get back all the muscle that went away last year. Every time I go on the leg press I think of Sunny - admittedly I'm only lifting 30 (which I hope is kg, not pounds) but you're in my thoughts!!! Oddly though my weights don't seem to have changed - got no muscle left but can still lift the same as in September, do we think I wasn't trying hard enough before. Helen

Paul - wahooo! Glad to see another fella posting on the thread.

Disneefun - your message just made me laugh. That's how I've been feeling lately too. I have a grant proposal due on Feb 1st, but it's pulling teeth to get me to finish it. I'd much rather be surfing the DIS.

Dona - I forgot to say Welcome!!

Cam: I'm so glad the DING fare worked out for you.

Dave -- It worked so well that I am now having my fondest wish come true--seeing DD in MK on 3/31! By booking with DING for the return flight from Minnie weekend, I had $87.80 in ticketless travel funds that had to be used by June something.

I was able to book a DING flight out for me and DS12 on Thursday night (arriving MCO around 11:30pm) to see DD17 perform in MK on Friday evening (gives us the entire day in the park! YIPPEE!!!), do something fun on Saturday, and fly out of Orlando (with another DING rate) Sunday at 7:00 am in plenty of time to get DS12 to his afternoon rehearsal for Seussical! The best thing -- the total additional cost to do the March flight is about $106 for both of us!

Now I just have to book our room. Where is that "running off to call DVC MS" smilie? Oh, yeah, here they are! :cool1: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Oh, one last thing, and best of all -- DS had NO IDEA I would consider taking him. Wait until he gets the itinerary in his email when he checks it tonight. :teeth:

Thanks again to everyone who helped me figure out DING and who alerted me to check for good fares. I really, really appreciate it!

Cam - That's awesome!! Ds will be thrilled. How exciting! Can I just comemnt on what a sign of the times it is that you're e-mailing ds his itenerary. I know it's for the surprise factor, but it just sounds so funny. Very cool!

Hey all! Just checking in real quick so I will be accountable to someone...sometimes you guys and gals are the reason I go and workout! :teeth:

Anywho.....Biked 30 min and ran 30 min. Was going to do more but ran out of time. Tomorrow my plan is swim and bike.

DDs are going crazy so I have to go and get a handle on them!

Later...Christa

Oh, welcome Dona!

It IS funny, isn't it?

Oh Cam...I'm so jealous! Weren't you just there???? :teeth: I'm glad you got DINGed till it worked. :thumbsup2

I still have 221 days.....or 5,322 hours..... :rolleyes2

But I was thinking when we are there in Sept that I might try to stake out some of the Half course and see what I am getting into. :smooth: I worry about this Contemporary hill I keep hearing about.

Say, did you guys read the marathon reviews at allears.net? :rolleyes1 Not that I spend a lot of time over there.....No, not me. I'm a DIS girl.

Judy

Cam-congrats on the DINGS. All the ones I keep getting only go thru 2/28. I dont know how you guys are getting better ones :sad2: I so dont want to drive to WDW in May

Colleen- Well, its hard to say exactly how long because I stop, catch my breath & talk a little between laps. With all that going on it was about 25 min. I havent been able to do 50 yds without stopping yet. I haven't had any lesssons. Just winging it. I'm hoping after about 3 weeks I'll be much better. I can already feel it getting easier. My tri the swim is only 200 m so its not that bad. Go for it!!!!

WL went good. I think that is going to help me a great deal. But boy is swimming going to be hard in the a.m.

Honeibee,

I can't speak for anyone else but I did not think the Contemporary Hill was bad at all. You are heading into the MK and that is a big boost. I found going up the clover leaf between mile 10 and 11 (I think) to be a LOT harder than the Cont Hill.
