Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

How is it that I can do 18 miles and feel "relatively" good the entire time, but I do 4 miles and feel like poo the whole time. Ugh, today was one of those days. Took me a while to warm up--almost a mile, but on a positive note the ankle didn't yell at me like I had expected. Now, gotta go feed the kiddos and myself! happy Hump Day all!

Carrie--So glad to hear that you're okay--but I did have to chuckle a little--But I can feel your pain, after my episode where my TM abruptly stopped as I was jogging and I almost fell flat on my face!

Carole - During the week, I pop in often enought that I catch most people in that 3 to 5 I can remeber to respond to. If I miss a lot and I really want to catch up, I take notes. Funny, many times where I forget to respond to someone, I see that someone else already has. Do what you can do. It's all good.

Sunny - lol. Yes, my lifeis one big tale of how an intelligent peropson can be brainless. I like to think that I just use up all my brain power at work adn turn it off when I go home. :confused3

Stephanie - Story of my live most of the time. I could do 10 miles at 10:43 pace adn then not go faster than 12 mpm on a 30 minute run. For one thing, I am usually tired when I do my weekday runs adn I do my LRs first thing in the am. Or, it could just be one of those valleys that makes the great runs feel even greater. ;)

Stacey - You will get faster!!! If you follow a training program like MfM, ther will be times where you will work on speed. Right now, though, just gettign the steps in is what matters.

Martha - My male cat is 3 time the size of the female. She gets her butt whopped every time and still eggs him on. It's all about attitude.

Cam - Thanks, but I'm hoping we are set. We need teh 1' band aids and gauze pads. Dh, who is doing much better (thanks) apologized for getting an off brand, but the big Band-Aid brand ones only had 8 in box. He knew that was not enough. :p

Carrie - I will take it as a compliment, but I think you got Cam and I confused. I didn't offer you any Band Aides. :confused3

Hi everyone! I hope nobody minds if I jump right in and introduce myself.

My name is Meghan and I am a 30-something Mom to a 6-year-old and a 5-month-old. I have never been a runner, but I always wanted to be one of those people who (at least appears to) effortlessly run several miles for fun. I was so inspired by all of your reports from this past marathon weekend that I took the plunge and registered for the 08 1/2 marathon. My only goal is to be able to run the entire thing, even if it is VERY slowly!

I am starting my training with the couch to 5K running plan and am just starting week #2, so I am obviously quite the beginner. I am planning to run a 5K at the end of April and I'm glad that I have a short-term goal because Jan 08 seems very far away. As with the 1/2, I am just hoping to run the entire 5K.

Anyway, I am so happy that I found this group!

I am so ready to explode.

In 2 months--I can hop on my treadmill for some light light light walking.:thumbsup2

In the meantime--jealous of all you walking/running training junkies!

(and why I don't exercise now--I couldn't so long b/c I was sooo sick and I am sooo out of shape (well I do look like a woman wearing a basketball :thumbsup2) it is just too depressing to hop on and try to exercise--b/c anything of any length is just too strenuous and gives me side stitches)

:yay: Someone--anyone--go run 3 miles for me....move it move it move it!!!! :yay:
:rolleyes1

Welcome and WTG!!!

I if it makes you feel better--my first marathon...I was a couch potato maven the preceding summer. Several of us were--you gotta start some time.

Good luck and WTG with registering!

For some of the people questioning black toenails. Sometimes they just happen. It can have to do with the top of your shoe, neighboring toes, or just the repeated stress of the foot striking the pavement. Some people say you should pick up your toes when you run to keep them from feeling the stress of the road. Some say you should keep them down so they don't rub on the top of your shoe (not necessarily at the end). Either way, sometimes they just turn black. I lost two last year.

Also, when they are all black it is because there is a blood blister under the nail. Some doctors will drill through the nail to puncture the blister to alleviate the pressure. Sometimes you can sterilize a needle and stick it in the end of the toenail (that's what I did). It helps it make it feel better. Then, just wait til the old one falls off and the new one grows in!

I'll run for you, Lisa!

:headache: DId I mention that tendancy to turn my brain off sometimes? :rolleyes1

Hey Meghan-

I'm new too! I did a 5k on the treadmill at the Y last night. I wasn't the speediest, but I managed to push aside the part of me that wanted to hit the big STOP button at the half-way point, so I was happy. I really think reading this board is what saved me!:cool1:

I wanted to tell you I have a seven year old and 9 month old, so we are pretty similar. It's trouble- you can put the baby in the stroller or the nursery at the gym, but the big kid can't go fast enough and doesn't want to go to the nursery! So far I've been either letting my daughter ride her bike or stay at home with DH while I take the little one in the stroller. I'm hoping someone has some good tips about dealing with family when we get to the longer runs!

Someone asked what to do about kids at the races-- I haven't raced, so I was curious about the same thing. Last night out of the blue my daughter asked me if I would ever go to Disney without her! Reading my mind, or sneaking on the boards? :rotfl:

Jen2 or hoosmi :)

Welcome Jen2 and Meghan!

Carrie - I was a little nervous stepping on the ol treadmill today - hope you are feeling better.

I noticed something while I was at the gym today. First, my gym has 41 treadmills (not 40) and at any given time about 20 of them are in use. Usually people get on leaving one treadmill between them and the next person, unless they come in together. Everyone checks to see how fast the next person is running. If I am running fast (say over 6) then only very fast men will get on a treadmill near me. Slow women will get on near me though. Most people stay on the treadmills about 10 minutes - seriously!
I need to get a new mp3 player. 6 miles is a long way with no music.

Jen2 - I have no advice on dealing with 2 for longer runs, but I will have to figure it out soon! ;) With just one, DH and I were both training for the marathon. We would try to schedule our very long runs on opposite weekends so the boy only had to go out for a 10 miler or so. That wasn't so bad when he was in a diaper... finding bathrooms along the route may be a bit harder.

As far as races, if we are both running, we bring babysitters (my parents) to watch him in the room during the race. We can drive to Disney, so the only extra expense is their room. For the races we have to fly to, only one person gets to do it. DH did the Disneyland Half last September, so we'll just have to go back in a few years so I can get my castle medal. :thumbsup2 Most of the big races have kids' races - always fun for DS to do. I love that he gets excited about running and exercising at his age (3). I wish I had been exposed to that when I was younger.

Nothing much to report from me. I am counting down - less than 10 weeks til baby's birth day!!! Like Lisa, I also feel like I am going to explode! Heading back to read the rest of the posts. I'll check in with everyone later! :wave2:

Doing very well all things considered.. Cautio is not neccessairly a bad thing. ;)

Ummmm.... Just be careful not to play with it too much while moving. That was mistake #1. :rolleyes1

Cecilia --

I do that same kind of noticing thing on the treadmill! Some days people really get on my nerves when they're next to me! I was on one day when it was teenage prom queen day a the club or something, and these three girls kept trying to flirt with these two terribly goofy looking guys! Of course, the girls were there with super short shorts and skater type shoes that were hardly tied up at all and they kept being ditzy and tripping and whatnot... Arg! I just wanted to go tell them that they looked stupid! That would be mean, though, and although I hate to think it, I'm sure I was that way once, too.

I don't like when the person next to me keeps scoping out my pace, as was the case the other day. I am always changing it up throughout my workouts, and I don't like when people try to slyly glance over.

I think I am feeling ornery right now. When I am working out tonight (Spin and run), I will look to find more positive things about working out at the healthclub. Then you will all think I am a more cheerful person than I am letting on right now!

Jen2 - It is a challenge. My DH is a police officer and he just got on day shift after many, many years of night shift. That helps because he now works 7am-7pm and he can work out in the wee hours of the morning. I typically go to the gym in the evening on his days off (he is on this weird two on, two off, three on, two off, two on, three off schedule - yeah it is tough to keep it all straight!) and that is working for now. My DH is more of a weightlifter, so he doesn't need as much time and he has promised to be supportive when I finally reach the point of doing long runs. It is tough for me to leave the girls at home when I haven't seen them all day, but I know that I am being a good role model for them.

The plan for the actual race is that DH will watch the girls while I run, if we can all afford to go. I may end up going by myself, which will be okay because we probably wouldn't spend much time at the parks anyway.

kids and racing....

Last season hubby was out--so my training during the week was on TM or at the teeny track at the gym and my long runs--I had a sitter who would come to my house at 5am so I could go to training.

2 years in a row, we have had family come. First year, hubby was the designated sister and last year it was my sister. This year it will be hubby sitting for the half and then one or more of my family members for the full. I also have a family friend whose daughter attends UCF so I can arrange for her to sit in room and then possibly then have the family just meet her at the finish line for us.

A support system is a great thing to have in place. You can also check the Fairy Godmother services at WDW. I think sitting may be available that early--and if you don't care if the kids are at the finish line--they get to sleep in and you just meet them back at the hotel room. I am not sure if they will bring them to the finish, but that is something you can check into.

ANd YEAH!!! I have a surrogate runner! Wahoo!!!
Thanks LittleMissMickey.:yay:

Hi there, just a quick note to Krista - I'd kill to wear flip flops right now. My feet are soooo hot - the worst thing is, if I'd been wearing flip flops on my holiday this wouldn't have happened. I was wearing Banana Republic trainers as it was so cold and the thin soles combined with cobblestones and carrying luggage just put too much pressure on my heel, which I then compounded by walking about 7 hours a day for the next three days!!! I should have known something was wrong when I was in the Colisseum taking nurofen to stop my feet hurting!!! Helen

Well I have to say I am lucky. DH wasn't into running until my last little angel was in preschool. He is also off on Fridays.:cheer2:
We drop the kids off at school on Friday run, bath, eat then pick them up. So it is easy for us right now. When we trained for Goofy, we would let them spend the night at grandma's friday night, or run our shorter LR on thursday.
07 is the 1st year that we had them with us marathon weekend. Mixed emotions about this. They are the BEST scream teamers in the WHOLE WORLD...they love it and even reported yelling for other WISHers at mile 24. But it was hard for me b/c I was so wiped out after the run and they were ready to go. Everyone got a nap - except me.:headache: I also felt bad b/c we did not go to the parks all that much. They did have fun though and want to do it again next year!:scared1:

Stephanie - I have a free 1/2 ironman you can do! Last yr, my girl friends and I started the Mean Girl's Half-Ironman. We have a course all laid out and we stop by our houses for support during the event. We all stayed together, so it was more a course than a race. We did get shirts on cafepress, but that was the only expense. It should be sometime this summer (or in September)

Carrie - Sorry to hear about your fight with the TM. I have found that somehow the machines usually win the battle until I bring out the sledge hammer and blow torch. :lmao:

meghan - Welcome. Hope you have a good time training and can find lots of useful information here.

Carole - Great job on your training run today. There are times I am feeling good and just want to keep on going. However, I usually have other stuff to get to so I can't do it all the time.

Martha - Good job on your training. Hope your hip feels better for your "beating" tomorrow.

Krista - Great job on the other training. You wouldn't be building up to try and kick Steve into being more helpful around the house would you. ;)

Judy - Enjoy the rest days. They will be disappearing before you know it.

I am being called for dinner so I had better go. I will try to catch up more tonight.

Bill

Just a quick post to let you know that the Disney Marathon Weekend 2008 has become a family event! DH and I are doing the Goofy and when we told my ILs, they started talking about registering for the 5K! (They've never missed one of their DS's marathons.)

They're both in their 60s and my MIL has two artificial hips, but they're active and excited about making this a family memory. This is the first time they've agreed to go to Disney with us--"amusement parks" are not their thing and they think I'm weird for liking Disney--and I have the marathon to thank for changing their minds! Who would've thought a race would be all it took?
