Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi TEAM!

I think I'm finally getting over the "crud"...been sick  for more than a week and stuck in the house for most of the time. What a nasty bug!

I bought a workout log, "The Ultimate Workout Log", by Suzanne Schlosberg and it's great. It has a spot for cardio, strength training, nutrition and notes. At the end of each week it has a section for weekly wrap-ups where you can add all your miles, total hours, etc,.. I'm hoping to get in the habit of recording all my workouts and see where I'm lacking. Next time your in Borders, check it out.

Good Morning!

Boy, I don't think I can even begin to catch up. Even this thread runs quickly!

Yesterday was a rest day, which felt odd. I'm ready to run today, so that makes it all worthwhile.

Still too cold to be out for me, so sticking with the TM. We have a t.v. with a surround sound sytem in the basement, so I get on the TM and run to a dvd, usually Duran Duran or Bon Jovi in concert. My dh laughs, but it gets me moving!

Thanks so much to everyone who commented on taking ds9 to the Half. After reading all the responses and talking some more, we decided to leave him at home. Because my young teenage niece would have to be shuttled back and forth, or we would have to leave ds in Tampa and retrieve him, it sounds like it's not a good idea.

DH told me last night that at this point, he's doing the Half with or without me. I'm determined it will be with me, but this is a big turning point! He dislikes all things Disney, he agreed to do this race with me for me initially, but now he's taking ownership for himself as well. He's excited about doing a Half marathon. I can't believe I inspired him to go farther in his running (he does 5Ks), but I'm really glad that we are both totally on board now. I think when he initially agreed to do it he was humoring me, thinking I would not get there. Now he's also focused!

Gator -- The last time my ds was out of school for snow we had so much it wasn't safe for kids to be at bus stops...Enjoy your day!

nucpharm -- Sorry about the community center. Just think how well-rested you'll be for your next run!

Cecilia -- I also don't like getting out when it's yucky. I can handle rain or cold, but put them together...

Kim -- Hope your meeting doesn't put you to sleep!

Carrie -- I hope you are feeling better today!

Cam -- The lentil soup sounds yummy! Good for you, making something healthy instead of heading for cheap and easy! That's the way I tend to go...:rotfl:

Tiff -- Strollers on an indoor track?! Wow! I will have to tell dh. He will appreciate the walking talkers he has to skirt around...:confused3

aladdinsgirl -- I do a load of laundry every day...or at least that's my goal! Glad you were able to catch up and now you can enjoy your workouts!

Kristi -- Hope you made it to the Y and had a great workout!

Carole -- I'm so glad you found a book and new program to try! I've been trying to be a runner for a long time (I know that sounds odd). I've tried doing too much too soon too many times to count, so now I'm forcing myself to take it slow. So far I'm not so sore I can't move, so hopefully this time I got it right!:thumbsup2

Bill -- I'm starting to think going outside is going to be scary! Wow, I always move to the side when I see a runner. Now I'm a bit nervous that when I leave the TM behind it's going to be *challenging*!

Craig -- Wow! Thanks for the lesson in running etiquette. I am keeping track of notes like this, so when I do get to my first race, I don't do anything inappropriate. Outside = slow. That's me! ;)

Erica -- I am so sorry for your loss. My kitties are almost 14, so we think about that day in the future. Be sure and give yourself time to heal

I know I missed some folks -- welcome to anyone who's new, and thanks to all the veterans for sharing your experiences!

Maria

Hi Cecilia,
I love my Ipod shuffle. Its so small it clips on my shirt with no weight really. And it was cheap. Now my Bose earbuds are a different story. Expensive but worth it. My ears must be a weird shape because the Apple earbuds hurt.

Carrie-Driveby TM attacks....very funny. My whole gym experienced a driveby attack yesterday. lol. Hopefully the lights will be on today.

I'm off to the gym. Full workout today. weights and cardio.

Re the people on the treadmill for 10 minutes. Hmnn. That might have been me. I started out a 4 minutes and went up a minute at a time.:wave2:
It did feel weird getting off the treadmill so soon. I'm sure people wondered. The other weird thing I do is Retrowalk after my treadmill workout. Now that looks really geeky. But its to retrain my gait to be more even because I favour my strong leg. So I walk backward on the treadmill-yep turn the other way-away from the control front. I walk slow and concentrate on my stride. It works too. I'm surprised no one has come up to me to tell me I'm on the machine the wrong way. lol

Have a great day!

Monte- I hate being sick & stuck in the house, although today it's freeezzzing here!

I did my LSW today, 6.1 miles, and I did improve on my speed this time. I'm still loving the feeling of walking for that long and accomplishing something new! I agree the shorter walks seem to drag on!

I'm off tomorrow to the world , then I'll get back to training!

Have great workouts everybody!

Greetings all -

I am unworthy to post today as I was a lazy bum and did not train again today. I have to admit I was really tired and did not get a good night's sleep. However I realize that is no excuse. Minnie training starts on Saturday and I talked myself right into staying in bed since after Sat I won't be able to goof off anymore.

Kristi - I had this problem on the track on the cruise ship. Which, BTW is on the top level. Boy, would I have liked to push those people off the side! Especially one group who insisted on walking three abreast. I was walking fast, but there were plenty of runners on the track too. A couple of laps of dodging them and I started yelling "COMING THRU" and I'd plow right thru them. Then a group of people were up there just strolling around - drinking their coffee!! - and watching the sunrise. One guy must have said something to a woman who turned to look at me then she tripped and fell down right in front of me! I had to jump over her! Stupid (&^%!#!@#$! GRRRR! :furious:

Cam - Good luck at the heart doctors. pixiedust: I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Thanks for asking about Logic. Her leg is now infected which worries me greatly. She hates her antibiotics, and I don't blame her because they smell really bad. It's a struggle to get her to take them. She is a very large horse and in a battle between me and her 1200 pounds, well, sometimes she wins. But she's GOT to take them. One way or the other.

Hey, where's Dave hiding? :confused3

I did my second 4/1 run on the treadmill this morning, and I am completely wiped out. Maybe it's the nasty weather, maybe I'm coming down with something, or maybe it's the headache I've been fighting since 3AM, but now all I want to do is lie on the sofa (and possibly drink some hot cocoa). I didn't feel great after my first 4/1 run the other day though, especially compared to how good I felt after my 3/1 runs last week, so I'm wondering if I went up to 4/1 too fast.

Also not helping anything is that I think my right foot supinates. Who do I need to see about that-- a podiatrist?

Sounds like the nasty weather is going around-- everyone drive safe!

Well, I had to take my dsis to work today b/c of a non-functioning car. She works at one of the ritz-y fitness centers here in Little Rock. So, she said that since the community center was probably a no-go for me, just to stay and workout-and she would pay for the kids childcare. Cool! I felt like I was in the Ritz Carlton of gyms--with the plasma screens or the treadmills with individual plasmas attached! But anyway, I think my body was forgiving me for such a cruddy workout yesterday, b/c today was awesome. 4 miles in 34:00 WTH!!!:cool1: And then did some arms and abs.

Carole--LOL about the treadmill! I think I might have a "drive by" TM accident if I ventured to walk backwards!

Well, the snow is almost gone. DD wanted to go outside and make snow angels. She doesn't realize that snow in Arkansas isn't like snow in Wisconsin-much more short lived here. Off to the showers with me, and then the vet--gotta take my furbaby in for her shots!

Ugh, today is one of those work days where I actually have to work. Not fun.

Last night was my first day of week #2 on the couch to 5K plan. For those of you who aren't familiar with the plan, week #2 is 90 sec of running (if you want to call my pace a "run" that is fine with me!) followed by 2 minutes of walking for a total of 20 minutes. I did fine and was able to finish it, but all I could think about on the way home is "if 90 sec is that hard, how in the !@#$% will I be able to run for 13.1 miles?!"

As I mentioned in my intro post, I am planning to run a 5K in April. At my current pace, such as it is, I think it will take me about 40 minutes to finish. That seems so slow! Or, is that pretty average for a 1st time runner? Not that I care, really. I just need to prepare myself mentally for being in a pack or in the back, know what I mean?

Maria

Well first I heckle Carrie, then I slam people in the inside lane. I'll get a reputation here. Please be assured that in your first race you will be welcomed and not elbowed. At the first one congregate in an area appropriate for the pace you will run and when the race starts take off at your pace, stay comfortable and have a ball. No one will be coming up on you from behind with ill intentions. The danger at a race is when someone starts well ahead of their appropriate spot. This causes lots of fast moving runners to avoid, dodge, etc., which can be really dangerous.

Carrie

Cruel? Well maybe. If you like, next January I'll show you the area below my left knew, where the 3 screws are. I took a nasty break there years ago on the soccer field. Playing smart? Good God no. I was showing off a new move to my wife of 19 years. I got pushed from behind, and snappo. Or I could show you the stitches above my left eye, where I ran full speed into our ramada in Tucson (the beam was lower than I thought), that was a double stitches and concussion. Sadly I have at least 10 more of them.

Take care

Craig

Don't worrry Craig! If I really thought it was bad, I would not have cut and pasted it in an e-mail to Scott. :goodvibes :goodvibes We all know you just like to call yourself a pirate, not act like one! ;)

Well I got to the gym and did my 2 miles! Its the first SR I've done (or any run for that matter) since the 1/2 so I wanted to start off small. Kids went to school 2 hrs late because of the 1 1/2 inches of snow we got (none of which stuck to the road) I was so focused on all the excess traffic & getting to the gym that after waiting forever in car line to drop them off, I pull through & kept on driving. Then I hear from the back "Mommy, we need to get out?!" Oops. So I have to get out & tell the PE coaches that I forgot to let my kids out and walk them back to the drop off point. I didnt look like too big a dork :sad2:

Speaking of trying to get by people while running. During the race, probably less than 2 miles in when it was still pretty hard getting your own space (and I was in corral C) there were people running through people which I dont have a problem with but as they went by I heard them say "Is this a race or a walk? They should have a separate walk!" I was so mad. Great attitude lady! And if she was so $&^%@&^%# speedy what was she doing in the rear of the pack with me, huh?

Judy-of course you are worthy! Look what you have accomplished in this past year. Give yourself a break, you work hard!

Well, got to go get some things done before kids get home.

When is this lab going to cut me some slack and let me get back to the important stuff:coffee: The ghost is still running my main pc and my laptop is a pain, and the work has piled up while I was busy being Goofy:scared:

Mel-- your pace improvement is awsome. You are really working hard. Keep up the Great Work!

Back to the toes... (can you beat a dead horse twice?). My toes nails had turned normal white/pink from my lack of training this year which dismayed me terribly. I think the reason they got chewed up so badly is because of all the walking I did over the two races. I tend to grind my toes into the ground when I walk.

Maria-- I forgot to include you in the NH/Ma/ME 5k/10k meets! I hope we can plan some and all get together. Where in Boston are you? Also, you mentioned about taking kids out of school for marathon weekend/vacation. I've been debating it too, in these parts that is practically a cardinal sin! I did it when DS was in Kindergarten and I was a nervous wreck for weeks about telling the teacher. The only way I'll go next year is if I can make it a vacation for him.

I'm just back from the gym:

TM 1% grade, 5.5 mph (10:54), two 6 minutes "hills" at 2%, 3 miles in 32:35 (I did a couple of little prints at 6.0 and 6.5 staying at 1%). Overall I did 4 miles by walking at the end. I set the grade to 5% with one hand on my water bottle and one swinging freely--- phew, I'm not in trouble.

On tracks and race rages: During the half I was amazed at how many people were walking 2-3 abreast in the middle of the path arms swinging just close enough to not make a way through. Paul (being a neophyte) asked me why I kept weaving so I said ina very loud voice "The only way to maintain our pace is to keep weaving around the walkers in the middle of the course". I then said loudly, "It should be the walkers stay right, slow runners in the middle and fast runners on the left". Duh.

Cam-- you were a very considerate walker and paid dearly. Next time, DON'T walk off the course in courtesy, being at the right is plenty courtesy. I saw many places (even pointed them out to Paul) where there were major drop offs of the pavement to the dirt/grass. What a shame that had to happen to you.

As for training trails. My bike path can be annoying on both ends. There's the double walking stroller moms and the drafting 4 across speed bikers! It can get very irritating.

OK, enough complaing. Back to work.

Judy - :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Carrie - I totally spaced on sending  for your treadmill snafu.

Can I just say I wish I was as bold as our Evil Queen at my track? :maleficen ;) I will get to the Y before tonight and report back on any elbowing or yelling at the rude slow people.

Maria
- Yay for your DH getting into it for the Half with you!

Carole - I should try that backward walking thing - it probably is great for your butt! (seriously!)

Meghan - you are doing great! I was slower than for quite awhile when I first started wogging last year.

Tiffany - great job getting back on track!

Cam - hoping your appt. is going well!

And Tiffany reminded me...during the Half, there were runners more frustrated than I was with the walkers. They were running through, dodging left & right. And many times staying on the right. All the while they are saying really loud "walkers should stay to the right!" Umm, well maybe they could if you weren't running on the right - duh! I guess what I am trying to say is that I totally understood their pain, but they were not helping matters by running on the 'slow' side! :rotfl:

Chad makes fun of me on the track. I only use the 'run' lane when I am passing someone - like on the highway. Then I pull over into the middle 'walk' lane as soon as I am by them (even if still running). I figure I can't see if someone faster than me is coming up, esp. with my mp3 player blaring in my ears. Chad thinks I worry about other people way too much.

Well, no one even uses indoor track at our gym. I've actually considered running around on it just to see if anyone would pass out or scold me or something!

snow here today, so my mt. bike outing turned to 1hr on the bike trainer while watching spongebob and playing drive thru grocery store w/ the boy. He was pretty good. He sold me a ball and stuffed animals and he would give me change even if i didn't pay him.

speaking of going slow on the right.....

last year during the half I found that if I was all the way to the right people would pass on the right by going off the pavement. Especially at the beginning when it was dark and the grass was wet! Made me nervous. I decided to walk to the right of the center line, leaving room on the right if someone chose to go that route. And some people did! I maintained my pace so there were no surprises for anyone coming up from behind. This year at the start of the full I was behind some TnT walkers and just adjusted my pace to match theirs for a while, again staying to the right, but not completely to the right so people could go around on that side too. Race day is a little different from a track. How annoying to have to manuever around the same people over and over. Maybe you need to push a stroller with a cattle catcher (like on a train) out front....j/k, but you would think people would have a clue after you went by them a few times.:crowded: :crowded:

Hey Teamies! :wave2:

I started this post yesterday and finished it today. It has taken forever! Being a SAHM doesn’t afford me the luxury of doing it at work…ON THE CLOCK!!! Hahaha! I’ve had to wait until nap times.

I’ve been really impressed with my exercise. I ended January with 15 days which I feel quite proud of. I’m not even wearing a watch. I’d get depressed. My greatest victory was yesterday. I went walking all by myself. Normally dh or my mom go with me so I’ve always had encouragement. But yesterday I did it JUST FOR ME! It was so nice and relaxing to enjoy the day and not have to listen to their hospital woes (they both work in the same hospital). I took it one step further today and went alone pushing dd in the stroller. We had a great time listening to the birds and enjoying the clear blue sky and warm breeze. Sorry snowbirds, but it was a gorgeous day. Only thing is my entire walk I was in the trail wind of dd’s chocolate chip cookies!!! Yikes!!!

Honeibee- Hip Hip Hooray! 13.1 AGAIN!!! Go on with your bad self girl! And it’s okay, we’ll let you rest until Saturday but then it’s on girl! You’ve got a date with Minnie we’re not letting you miss!

Plutosmyfav- It’s so funny that you were upset when your toenails went back to normal. LOL! Definitely a sign of a slacker.

TiffJ- Your story about forgetting to let your kids out has me so tickled. How embarrassing!

Meghan74- A great big WELCOME! Congrats on making it to week #2! Trust me, in a few weeks what you did last night will feel like an easy workout. It just takes time. As far as my experience with running 40 minute 5ks, it pretty much depends on which race you’re doing. Check and see if they have the results posted somewhere from last year’s race. Also, if it’s a family friendly 5k like the YMCA or something you will be nowhere near last, but if it’s a trail run or something more strenuous then you may be closing the course. Either way you will be treated like a champion by everyone. Runners respect and encourage anyone willing to participate. Keep it up! Great to have you here.

Nucpharm29- Look at you kicking behind in that fancy gym! That was an awesome pace. Whew!

AbraCat- Sorry your 4/1 was so tough. Given that you had a headache and all I’d try it again one more time, but if it still felt too much I’d cut back to 3:30/1 for a week. No need to push too much too fast. You’ll get there! Cute pics from your Disney trip btw!

Westcliffemom- 6.1 miles. Ooooh I’m jealous. Great job! You’re off to the world??? Disney World??? Now I’m REALLY jealous! Have fun!

CaroleD- You have Bose earbuds. Dang, you just added one more thing to my gotta have running apparel! How much are they? I’m so glad I have a birthday coming up!!!

Worfiedoodles- How exciting a romantic couples trip for you and dh! It’s great that he said he’s doing it with or without you. That way you don’t have to keep encouraging him to train. And he can help encourage you when you don’t feel like getting out there. Sounds like it’s going to be a great journey for both of you- together!

Monte- I’m so GLAD to see you’re feeling better. You did have one heck of a bug!

Hockeychic- Hey right back at ya! Thanks for stopping by even if you don’t have time to post. Hope you enjoyed your meetings! HaHaHa!

KeenerCam- I sure hope you get great news from the pulmonologist. Let us know!

Aladdinsgirl- Don’t you know laundry IS cross training!!

Goofyin08forErica- How in the world are you shedding minutes so fast?!?! Wow 2:49!!!

Chimera- A 5.2 inverval. I don’t think I can even drive that fast!! Can’t wait to hear about your 10 on Saturday.

Deekaypee- How neat that marathon weekend is going to be the whole family. I’m in awe of the IL’s doing the 5k. In their 60s with hip replacements. Dear goodness, I’ve got no excuse to miss it! Tell them they’re inspiring others so they have to be there!

Hoosmi- Congrats on doing the 5k!!! I’m so proud of you for not hitting the stop button. That’s exactly why I can’t exercise on a treadmill. If I’m out of foot I can’t just stop. I HAVE to make it back home. Though some days I’ve wanted to stop and take a nap in the ditch before continuing on. LOL! Welcome to our team!

LittleMissMickey- ewww! I cringed when I read you put the needle in under your toenail. Ack!!! While you’re running for Lisa, run for me too girl!

LisaLovesPooh- I know it must be so frustrating for you to not be able to run, but you’ll be back smokin’ us all in no time. Enjoy your last couple of months of rest and belly kicks. I can’t believe you only have 1 more little ticker baby to go. It seems like just yesterday we were getting the news that you were pregnant. I can’t wait to meet the little one!

Crzy4pooh- You’re getting really close to D day! Less than 10 weeks!!! Rest up girl! Keep us updated.

And lots of love to everyone else who’s pushing along this week:
Kristi1357,Wtpclc,,Cruella de mom, Wfloyd, Calcio, Gatorphipps, Dennyha, Optimator, Princessmomma, KeenHo, Solotraveler, Jen117, Kim10110, Mogulskr, Txbelle, Mousedogmom, Mouse Skywalker, Disneybelle, Chernabog#1fan, Scubadiver, Minnie, MelRhoads, Littlegreydonkey, Hockeygirl, Texa, Pungodingy, Tinks, Paull117, BigVic, Skfulkers, Blueroses, Tek224, WDWFAN9, Magslite, Msblrobs, Panthergirl (And anyone else I missed!
