Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi everybody!! Getting here late today, I can see that I missed a bunch!! I'll do my best to catch up with everybody.

Carole--Welcome!!! I'm so glad you're here with us. That is fantastic that you are able to continue walking after your surgery. There are lots of people who walk marathons, you will absolutely NOT be alone on the course. I just want to give you a heads up that there is a 7 hour time limit for the Disney course. 7 hours to walk a marathon is absolutely attainable. Good luck!!

Jen--Welcome!! (2 Jen's is going to get confusing!! :) ). Don't worry about people thinking you are crazy, we have heard it all before.

Cam--Did I read that right? You, Howard, and Andrew are getting in the Atlantic Ocean this weekend? Goofy's Challenge = sane, Polar Bear plunge = CRAZY!!! I hope you get a warm front come through!

Howard--More :wizard: for your back!! Listen to your beautiful wife and get to the doctor!!!

Sunny--Your ice bath experience made me laugh out loud!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Sara--:lmao: :lmao: waxing :lmao: :lmao:

Vic--I will gladly give Hines a big hug from you! I did my run last night and I'm going to the Community Center tonight, don't send the sheriff out after me!!

Judy--Where are you?? We miss you!

Mike--You are a riot!! I am well in touch with my INNER Kenyan!

Dave--Great run!! Do you promise to wait for me at the finish line at the Pig? I know I won't see you on the course! By the way, the Pope's bust is a little freaky!!!

Carrie--Is Scott feeling any better? I love the snow too.

Kristi--Half a uterus? Huh. That's different. Judging from the BW breakfast, I see the cramped conditions didn't slow Zach down any!!

Dena--How exciting to feel your baby kick!! I would imagine that has got to be the best feeling in the world. Congrats.

Martha--I forgot to welcome you last week!! So sorry!!!

Heather--Are you around? I know how busy you are!!

I know I didn't get to everybody, but know that I'm thinking about you!!

Hey everybody--

Jen--:welcome: I can completely relate about people thinking you are crazy about signing up for these races. I signed up for the 2008 marathon, and my family thinks I am nuts and do not understand why I am doing it.

mel---great job on your TM run, isn't it great to run your best run ever!! I love that feeling!

Jackie--way to go getting up so early to get to the gym...I wish I could do that.

Dave--one of the reasons I hate running on a TM is when people get on next to me, I always feel like I have to keep an eye on what they are doing....maybe it is the inner competitor in me. I have gotten so much better at ignoring it, but that is why I like running outside!!

Stephanie--Hope the ankle feels better...take care of it now, so it doesn't get any worse

Judy--where have you been?? Hope all is well!

Cam/Howard--I couldn't even imagine doing a polar bear swim!! It makes me shiver just thinking about it!! Have fun with that this weekend!

Carole--:welcome: and GO FOR IT! You can definetely walk the half marathon next year. Many people here on the boards walk the races! You will find great support here!

Abra cat--:welcome: You will love visiting the boards here!! The support you will get is great!!! And it does become quite addicting at times checking for new posts!!

Sorry if I missed anybody!! hope everyone's training is going well.

I am heading out for a 3.5 mile run after work...I will check in later to let you all know how it goes!!

Enjoy the rest of the day!!

Hey everyone!

I ordered Marathon for Mortal off Amazon and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive.

I wanted to get a season racers opinion of our training plan.
We just started the Couch to 5K plan and intend to complete it by March 9th.

We're doing it by time rather than distance so between March 9th and April 28we will work on getting up distance. Our first 5k race is April 28th, we are doing the Texas round-up in Austin.

Ideally we would also use this time to get in shape and lose any extra weight. I've been cross training with weightlifting, pilates, and cycling so I think I'll keep doing that. Nick does karate 3 times a week so he will continue to do that. (he's 10).

So hopefully by May we should be able to run 5 miles relatively comfortably and begin the actual marathon training. (well 1/2 marathon training)

Does this schedule look doable. We are very committed to doing this!

I'll be thinking of you Cam, 'cause I'm doing it too! Mine is the Penguin Plunge in Hampton Beach NH....last year it was 45, don't think we're gonna be that lucky this year!

Abra Cat - Welcome!!!

Krista - Thansk fro asking. Scott's doing better, but he had decifded to skip teh run that I moved from yesterday to today. SO, I told him iof he was too sick to run, he was too sick to snow blow last night. It was quite a fight, but he must still eb sick, because I won. ;) Thansk fo asking!

Steve - It's not the cold, it's the 10" of snow. :(

Hi!

I just wanted to try to check in a little early, no time later tonight. I'm going to be xtraining on the bike while ds has gymnastics, then we have to run to his Open House, then all the bedtime fun, and then I'll get to relax for a minute.

Texa -- I too am using Marathoning for Mortals. I think you will love it. It's worth the wait!

Jen -- My family does not believe I'm going to actually do the race. I am going to prove them wrong!

Mel -- You are getting better and better!

Jackie -- Getting up before the sun is weird, isn't it? But so worth it! You should be very proud of yourself!

Carole -- A huge welcome! I am a newbie myself, and this is an awesome thread!

Abra Cat -- Welcome! This is definitely where the fun is!

Steve -- I'm with you, enough with the cold weather! Hope you enjoy your 5 miles, wherever you do it!

Vic-- Good luck with the carpet. Remodels could try the patience of a saint!

Cam -- Hope your hands and feet feel better every day!

Sunny -- Thanks for sharing your ice bath woes. Now I won't make that mistake, because I certainly would have!

Howard -- Hope your back is improving!

Dena-- Congratulations on that little runner!

It sounds like we are off to a busy week. I have a question for those of you that have done a Disney race -- did you bring your kids? DH and I are trying to decide whether to bring ds9 in January. He would have to miss a few days of 4th Grade (highly frowned upon in his school), and we would have to make some arrangements and travel back and forth to Tampa a few times to have a niece watch him Friday night. DH wants to leave him at our house and have my dad come watch him. I'm torn, because I'm afraid he's going to be really upset we went to Disney w/out him, even though we're not going to the parks. This is also our first long race, so I don't know how we will be feeling.

We are going for a family vacation this summer, so he will have just been there a few months previously...and he does get a big family vacation every summer, so it's not like this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for him.

I'm wondering what other people normally do?

Thanks!
Maria

Finished my Tuesday speed run on the TM. Maybe it will help offset the 3 doughnuts I ate yesterday.:sad2: You see, I was out of town this past weekend so I picked up doughnuts for the boys as a treat.

They didn't finish them:rolleyes: I did as any mom would do and took one...er, three, for the team so they wouldn't get stale and hard and yucky. We can't have that.

So now I'm back to eating better. (I hope.) This is my weak spot--food. My inner Kenyan must be an Ethiopian because I'm always hungry.

Spinning--I highly recommend it. I would also suggest giving it 4 classes before you make up your mind about it. Many people do one class and dislike it, but I've found that those who return for a few more tries LOVE it. I'm one of those, and I do my spinning Wednesday mornings for a xtrain.

Happy training!

BTW, does anyone want to explain what a Garmin is exactly and why I need one?? I peeked at them online, but it looks like a GPS??? It also looked somewhat large to be strapping to my wrist for a LR!

Greetings, Team. :yay:

Many thanks to everyone who was looking for me. I'm still here. :wave2: But, geez, I sorta wish I wasn't. I wish right about now I was at The Magic Kingdom, just about to go to The Plaza for lunch, or maybe about to enter The Haunted Mansion....Ahh, a girl can dream, can't she?

But no, here I am. Let me give you the Reader's Digest Condensed Version of my past few days...

Thursday night went to NJ with a friend from high school to see a play. Play was good, she was annoying. Gym at the hotel was awful, it really smelled of mold! So I didn't train. Came home Friday to find my paddock full of blood and my mare with a huge cut on her leg. :sad2: $863.00 dollars later she is bandaged up and filled with antibiotics and pain meds. Saturday morning I'm really looking forward to my mindless LR on the TM when Charlie comes upstairs and announces the TM is broken. The motor belt was worn out, so $215.00 later that is fixed. Saturday all day I had mild chest pains which got worse at dinnertime. Charlie drove me to the ER where I spend three hours finding out I had no "cardiac event", just some inflammation of the chest wall. Great. (Side Note: The one really good thing was they put my heart thru the wringer, so to speak. I have a very healthy heart, they tell me. Whoo hoo! Bring on training for the Minne!!! ) Condo tenant called Sunday to tell us the mixing valve in the shower is busted. $1,258 later, that's taken care of. Some weekends it doesn't pay to get out of bed. :rolleyes2

So I had my first decent training this morning. Nothing to write home about, but at least I got 'er done! 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1%. :goodvibes

While watching Cat on A hot Tin Roof. Ohh, so far a great movie! :thumbsup2

Vic - Many posts ago you referred to yourself as "sissy-boy". I highly doubt that you have EVER been referred to as anything even remotely close to sissy-like. We, too, watched the Rolex 24. It was good for a temporary fix.

Carrie - Thanks for that handy hint about how to find out how many posts everyone has in a given thread. You learn something new around here every day. :)

I know I've missed a lot of posts. Don't take it personally, please. :surfweb: I'm not done yet.

 There is a new bright star in Heaven today. God Speed, Barbaro. May you gallop forever among the stars.

It is a GPS. I have a 201 , which is a bit large, butI got used to it right away (and I have pretty small wrists) The 205 is a much nicer size.

It's a GPS that gives you time, pace, distance, splits, alerts when you go too fast or slow, virtual partner, lets you upload your runs to your computer....
It is a must have! ;) (Just another little item for this free sport of ours)

Wow, sorry I can't keep up with all the posts today, i will catch up tonight.

Welcome to all Newbies!!!!!!

Carole, where in Ontario are you from?? I am just north of Newmarket.

New Jen: When my DW (Jen117) started last year a lot of people didn’t think she could do it. It took her a couple of years just to say she was going to do it. She told me a long time ago that it was her dream to do the half marathon at Disney. Last couple of years of me pushing her, and then a good friend of ours challenges her she decides to do it. I really think it was the people here that kept her going though, and still keep her going. She originally said it was a one time thing and the half was all the farther she wanted to run. A year later she is thinking about doing the full.

As for me I am not a runner, but I have said to her if she does the full I will do the half. So far this week I got a good run/walk on the TM. My rest day I ended up playing with the kids for an hr in the pool. I was more tired after doing that than running on the TM. So then decided that Monday I would rest, well god had other plans. It snowed enough that I had to shovel.

I think I will get on the TM tonight even for a short run just to let my legs know I have not given this up yet.

Christa -- Julie's feet have been going pins-and-needles and numb right on the ball of her foot. One question was whether or not she was running on her toes.
Ashley
OOOOH! Look to see if her shoes are tied too tight. Also, I did have this problen when I wore my New Balance until I read in Runners World about a different way to lace up your shoes. There is a blood vessel there that if the shoe laces are pressing on, your foot will feel like it is asleep. Look on RW web site. I am sure it has the way to lace them....oooh, lacing backwards may help too.
Now this may not be the problem though.

Cam - I am sorry about your feet/toe nails. I have to say I have never lost a toenail due to running until this year. I can see that my 2nd toenail will be coming off soon. I totally freaked my mom out when she saw it.:confused3

I am thinking about getting ready to sign up for a 100 mile bike ride to the beach...someone talk me out of this!

Judy-- I'm so sorry you've had it so hard.:grouphug:

Cam-- the plunge again???? It must be that penquin in you;)

On spinning: I highly recommend it, too. You will work your booty off and its great xt. Someone asked if weight-lifting is xt, in MHO it's not. It's strength training and useful, if not necessary, but xt should be cardiovasular to build capillaries, etc.

Mike-- If I have an inner Kenyan, she's duking it out with my inner penquin who happens to be the heavy weight:lmao:

Garmin 201 vs 205: My main reason of not searching for my 201 is it began to get flakey and even in top shape it lost signal alot (I run under trees most of the time). I have a friend who has the 305 and he says it never loses signal. So that's my main concern.

Minnie:grouphug: :wizard: Geez, it's time you got a break. I hope teh chiro helps once you can get there.

I did my 5 miles on the TM. I set it to 1% this time and did two 6 minute intervals at 2%, all at 5.0 mph (12:00) except for two minutes at 6.0 (10:00).

In the words of the infamous Scooter:

yeaa-aaa-aaa I feel hardcore
yeea-aaa-aaa always hardcore ;)

(I was feeling pretty tough on the TM today:woohoo: )

Sunny

Judy-- I'm so sorry you've had it so hard.:grouphug:
Sunny

Thanks, Sunny. I'm doing OK. It's just so many things at one time! KWIM? My mother always used to say we had a "strong Polish constitution". I tend to agree.

But then I go drown my sorrows in hot fudge. :rolleyes2

Judy- I have to say that is one awful weekend. Sorry for all your troubles, and hope that you've had your fill for a while. So I was curious about your comment that the play you saw in NJ was good, but your friend was annoying. What was that about?

Oh Dave, she's a friend from high school, that honestly, just never got her act together. She's always, always late, wasn't even packed when I got here, her apartment is a disgusting mess, can never find her keys, had no clean socks so we had to stop and buy some, brings an overflowing shopping bag full of brownies, donuts and cookies then complains for the entire two and a half hour car ride that she doesn't understand why she can't lose weight. I'm sure you get the picture. She has lived alone almost 20 years and, it shows. She's become a serious slob and I really just can't stand that. I mean, untidy is one thing, but her condo was totally gross. She has a brand new full size car and we couldn't put our bags in the trunk or back seat because it was filled with empty soda bottles.

BTW she isn't working right now, she's been "between jobs" for almost a year. It's not like she doesn't have time to do any cleaning or chores.

:rolleyes2

I hope you're not sorry you asked. But you can see why she gets on my nerves. Not that I completely have my act together but geez, she needs to grow up already.

But anyway Dave, thanks for reading my post. :goodvibes

I just want everyone to know that Judy has not been at my house. (And she may not get an invite, as I'm afraid of what she'd say. :rolleyes1 ) :p Just kidding Judy. I'd clean my house for you!
