Wk of Jan 21--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi, everyone! I am psyched to have a good training session to report. I had mentioned that my PR for a 5K is 43:33 and my goal is to beat that on the same course on 3/17. I am training to run longer segments over that distance.

Tonight I did the TM. I did 5 minutes warmup at 4.0 mph (.33 miles) then restarted.
I mostly did jog 1.5 minutes at 5.0 and walk 3.5 minutes at 4.0-4.2. I was able to maintain the intervals the whole time and even jogged for longer periods a couple of times (when inspiring music was on). I did 3.14 miles in 42:25 (pace 13:31) and more than a minute faster than my 5K PR. Now, to work up to being able to maintain those intervals and speeds consistently and maybe to lengthen the jogging intervals.

And no, Kristi, while I appreciate your faith in me, I have no desire to do the Goofy next year. As far as I'm concerned, I haven't mastered the full yet. It is something I want to do much more easily before I aspire to anything greater. As it is, my goal had been to run the entire 1/2 next year, but I am deferring that objective in the interests of the 15th year Mickey medal.

I agree with Dena, too, about everyone taking it easy and being realistic about what you are undertaking. Please respect the miles and build a solid base for going 26.2 miles.

Welcome to our newest team members! :welcome:

Just a quick post after having caught up--I think I strained an eye muscle, trying to read so quickly. Today is an enforced rest day for me--my long work day--so I've nothing to report but some yoga this morning and again tonight. But I wanted to thank everyone for posting their training suggestions for the Goofy. I've been reading them all avidly and even passed some of them on to my DH.

And thanks for the general support and the reality checks. As The Penguin, Dena, Cam, and many of you suggest, I'll be learning to "respect the distance!"

Oh, and a P.S. for Carrie:

DeeKayPee - Can I call you DKP?

Yes, please, everyone do so! I keep meaning to shift my siggy--DKP is perfect!

littlegreydonkey/Helen, LISTEN to the physio person and Tim...DO NOT PUSH the recovery!! You already know that...just reinforcing it for you! But the camaraderie with the race club...wellllllll You NEED that!! :rotfl2:
keenercam/Cam, :woohoo: :woohoo: FANTASTIC job! Don't cha feel good?? Proud of ya!!
chimera/Mel, How can I convince someone who is ALREADY sporting the Mickey '08 clippie???!!! hhmmmmmm????!!
wdwfan9/Pat, I have a half in March and the Minnie "Daisy Challenge" in May to complete before any serious consideration is given to Mickey '08. If Mickey fills up before then, oh well...it wasn't meant to be. Regardless of whether I participate in the 1/2 or the Full, I want to be there as scream team. I really, really, enjoyed doing that!!:cool1: I can always do the 5K!

Oh, newbies and lurkers...don't ever think that the team does not respect any event distance less than a half or full marathon! We are just as thrilled to hear about a 1 miler as a 50... It takes time to put the steps in, to build the endurance, and we want to be here to share it alllll with you! Gosh, I wish I could put it in words as eloquently as others do. Hope you understand the sentiment!! :goodvibes Anne

Well, it only took me 3 days to get caught up on the posts this week (and never did catch up last week).

Vic, I've done RPDE twice now. Once at WDW and once at Richmond. Definitely a highlight for me.

It's really amazing how important the mental aspect of training is. I started an "official" training plan last week for the Frederick (MD) marathon that is being held the same weekend as the Minnie in May. A Hal Higdon plan for beginners, it entails shorter runs of 3, 4, and 3 miles early in the week and the progresssive long runs at the end of the week. Pretty standard stuff. Well, I'd been routinely running 5-6 miles every couple of days in prep for the the just completed WDW half and have had a few similar runs since then. The idea of dropping back to 3 or 4 mile runs seemed almost like a break.

Here comes the mental part. Those 3 and 4 miles were some of the toughest runs I've had since last fall when I started training. They kicked my buttocks. The 6 miles on Friday was easier, even at a similar pace.

I now know that "respect the distance" doesn't just mean the long ones.

Much better frame of mind this week: Snow and ice forced indoor training this week. Unlike Steve, I'm perfectly happy on the TM vs. 25 degrees at this point. 3 miles on the TM Monday, 4 on Tuesday and will do 3 again tonight.

Knowing my exact pace is a minor issue though. I'm convinced our TM under reports. I'm pretty consistent outside, run what feels like at least the same pace on the TM and get cheated out of a full minute per mile. Oh well, I still go by the TM numbers but in my mind I'm kind of giving myself extra credit.

Anyone ever run the Frederick Marathon? It looks pretty small, accepts 1500 runners but only about half that have had official times posted. DW and many others will be at WDW earning their Minnies, others will be at the Flying Pig getting that cool hardware. I'll be happy with a gold foil covered chocolate for my first full! I guess sometimes it's not only about the bling....

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb: It's a snowy day here in Rochester.

Welcome to all our new teammates. Thanks for joining and posting. Your excitement and enthusiasm are definitely keeping us going.

Jen- Alright, you can definitely do the full. Paul- It was great to meet you at WL, and hopefully I'll see you again next year.

Kristi- I'm a cynic by nature. I kind of agree with you regarding the 15th anniversary medal. I saw pictures of the 10th anniversary medal on the web, and I'm thinking the 15th might look like that. If I'm wrong and it's really different and special, then I'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm just hoping I can get to go to WDW again to run.

John- Wow, you're going Goofy '08!!! Congratulations. Good for you. I wish I could have talked with you more over the weekend. Thanks for taking so many great pictures during the race. Congrats on your committment to get healthier. Good for you. I'm right there with you.

Ashley- You're definitely a part of the team. I'd love to hear more about your experience in 2005. Welcome!!!

Anne  I'm thinking you're going to be signing up for the full soon.

Mel/Chimera- You can do it!!! You can do the full. You've got a great base, 4 1/2 marathons under your belt. You can do it!!! Wait, Anne just pointed out you already have the Mickey '08 clippy in your signature. What's that mean??? Also, that Alaska race you found has Melissa written all over it.

Dena- Your point is well taken. And I certainly was injured for 2 months this summer. I do think if everyone takes it slow and steady they can make the distances. Just listen to your body, don't go too fast, and don't increase the distances more than 10%. That being said, I'm hoping I can get through the year injury free. My shins still give me a little trouble every now and then.

Helen- I need to find a running club like yours, where you can drink beer.

Vic- Oh good, I'm so glad you didn't miss out on the daily bra conversation. Great job on the 4 miles on the TM. You're really keeping it going!

Jackie- I'm sure you won't be alone at all. Plus, if we're all doing the full, that means us WISHers can line the half course and cheer you on. If I'm going down for the weekend next year, I'm making sure I do that.

Cam- Great job on your training. :thumbsup2 If you're already a minute faster than your 5K last year, just think what you'll do when you're on the course in the excitement of the race. WTG!

DKP- Great rest day. I started doing yoga last year, and it felt sooooo good to stretch out some of those muscles.

Mike- Good to hear from you, and good for you for training for your first full. I had not heard about the Frederick Marathon. You'll have to tell us all about it. Keep up the great work with your training.

AmyBeth- Where are you? Come check in with us.

Jodi- How are you doing out there?

Good morning team an welcome to new teamates.

I joinned the gym last night and was there bright and early this morning at 5:30AM:woohoo: Did 1 hour on the treadmill and did 5.8 miles. I think that was a pretty good pace, that includes a warm up.

Carrie thank you for all your support and advise, I never thought this decision would be so hard.

Have a great day everyone.

kim

You guys have been so busy lately that I just can not keep up. So I figured I would jump in first thing this morning before I even get the kids out of bed.

Guys - Sorry about the whole bra conversation, but guess what you might be able to get us back. My DH has a question about what you guys use to run in, especially in the cold. He refuses to wear tights (even if they are zebra print ;).

Well, DH has just started week 2 of the C25K, and I have been running it with him. It takes everything I have to keep up with his long ole legs. Hopefully it will help me build my speed up though.

Welcome to all the newbies. I know it takes a little time to get used to all the names, but you will get there. This team is wonderful, there were times I would only get out and run because I knew everyone else here had one too.

Dana

Man you guys are killing me!!:dance3: As I'm doing the 1/2 (my 3rd in a year) I was thinking "why am I doing this, next time I'm just going to come to WDW for vacation, why am I doing this, I just want to sit down, why am I doing this?!?!?! (I'm have this runnig dialogue in my head) and then the next day I take my mom to the end of the full to chear on our teammates & this makes her start thinking about doing the full. Well, I was still too hot & too sore to consider it. However, now I'm better and those ghostly thoughts of the Mickey medal are looming in the back of my head. It doesnt help matters that all of you are already talking about signing up. Man I would love that Mickey medal. Then I see Pat may do it & start thinking, I could walk with Pat, I could do her pace (maybe?) And Jen's thinking about it, and Anne and Cam and Mel. What to do, what to do?

I think I'm going to do like Anne & wait & see how the Minnie goes before I sign up for anything.

OH, and we were talking about going on a cruise this year for fall break. When I told DH that we couldnt do a cruise & marathon weekend too DS9 said he didnt want to go on a cruise, he wanted to go back for marathon weekend. What a great kid!

My only training so far has been painting the den. My arm is sore!

Kristi-you are no longer a penguin! You are getting speedy!

Cam-your rockin! You are going to do great at the next race!

We are more chatty than I have ever seen...I just had to skim but here is what I got..

Zebra tights not a requirement.

Chub rub...it is of the devil! I call any rubbing chub rub, even though I think the skin rubbing together is what it means. I had a nice line around my waist from my H2O belt after the marathon...My built in bra also rubbed me (maybe it is b/c it is 2 big- I know TMI!) I looked like I had been whipped.

However, I have to say that I saw ALOT of guys with blood on their shirts b/c of rubbing....with a bra, one normally does not get that!:rotfl:

Respect the distance! This is true! Lots of people do not understand what it takes to get to the starting line. If it was easy, everyone could do it. However, I do think anyone (who does not have a medical issue) who puts in the time and training can do it. But not everyone is willing to do this. If I can do it, I have to say anyone can!

My training....!
Biked Monday on a stationary bike:eek: ! I hate that almost as much as the TM. Then did 100 or so sit ups on that ball thingy
Ran Tuesday on the dreadmill!  5 miles in 40 min.
Oh...I have also been rehearsing 24/7 for my upcoming show...is dancing like a mad woman xtraining?

Off to work:headache:

Wow, there's no way I'll get all my responses in... but I'll try.

Vic: Funny you should mention upperbody and pushups, chinups this weeek. I used to be a serious weight lifter (real mean girl;) ). But its been nearly a year since I've been serious. I used to do 100 push ups, too (20 at a time, 5 times). (good form, military style). So just a few nights ago I decided to see what I could do... UGH. Five very shakey, very slow, nearly died push ups! So there's some room for improvement. They pull a little on my right sciatica but not horribly. As for chinups:sad2: I used to use the chin-assists machine and got to where I was only countering 40lbs of my weight. It was my goal to do ONE real chinup before I die... But I am back to the gym and starting out very slowly and carefully again. I also have a home gym, nowhere near as impressive as yours. I have a 65lb punching bag and a standing kick bag, bench and free weights; but everything is squished to the side to accommodate DS's new air hockey table:rolleyes:.

Bra talk, chub rub and races: Do you guys (um, I mean gals) grease your bras for races? I didn't have a single sting in the shower after either race. I used to have almost a complete bra outline scar from early days of LRs and not knowing the tricks:rolleyes1 (where'd the blushing smiley go?)

Dena-- really good point. We need to be careful to not get too caught up in medals and "Disney magic" and respect the distance and what it does to our bodies.

Yesterday was horrendous for me. I learned the whole "positive attitude" thing goes right out the window when the pain takes over. I had planned on going to the Y after work which probably would have done me a world of good, but instead I left work early and went home and iced/heat/and snapped at everyone in sight.

I have my gym bag... so today I will make it to the gym at lunchtime.

Sunny

Good Morning team! I made it to my Wednesday spinning class. 45 minute spin. Hope that's a good xtrain!

Hockeychic (Kim) I'd say that's a great time, speedy! I thought you were just getting started??! 5.8 miles :thumbsup2

I'm staying out of the bra conversation! I haven't had problems in that department in my LRs and if I mess with the system I might end up in pain!:rotfl: I haven't had to grease my bra either. :confused3 Maybe I'm just lucky. I may try to see if our Target carries the LG ones, though, just for kicks. And I'm in the market for a cute running skirt, but I'll pass on the zebra print. ;)

Happy training!:dance3:

I see you are in IL. Once you start doing LRs in heat and humidity you might find it more challenging!

Regardless of whether I participate in the 1/2 or the Full, I want to be there as scream team. I really, really, enjoyed doing that!!:cool1: I can always do the 5K! ! :goodvibes Anne

Anne - You were such an awesome scream team!!!! I still smile thinking about seeing you on the course!!!

Mike - I totally think my treadmill is the same way. A 10 minute mile seems so hard on it and no so outside!!!

Dana - Phil actually broke down and got some tights, but he will only wear them if he runs after dark and if he is sure the whole neighborhood is in bed:lmao: :lmao:

Good morning TEAM!!! I woke up to a light dusting of snow this morning.  I love snow, but not the idiots who can't drive in it. I did 30 minutes on the TM last night, I had forgotten how tough that is. My legs were sore last night!! I had to walk it, since I have banned running until Feb. 12 (the day I start training for the Pig), I walked 2.4 miles. It was so hard to not start running, but I just kept thinking "I am doing this for my IT band, I am doing this for my IT band." I meant to do my crunches and push-ups last night too, but I had to rescue Hines from the crate and he won't let you do anything when you are down on his level. Oh well, there's always tonight.

Marathon Chub Rub--I didn't get any (thankfully) but I also wore SO much Body Glide on almost every part of my body that you could smell me coming a mile away! :snooty: My Mom has scars on her back from her bra rubbing during the half last year.

Anne and Tiff--I think you girls are smart to wait and see how the Minnie goes before committing to the full.

DKP--Take those rest days!!! Once you get further on in your training, you will see how important they are.

Kim and DKP--Nice job on getting up early and working out. I cannot do that! I barely get up in enough time to get ready for work in the morning. I am so not a morning person!

Mike--Good luck training for your full!! I'd definitely take the chocolate--yum!!

Sunny-- When do you go see the other doctor (I forget what kind of dr it is)?

Cam--Awesome pace on your 5K!! You are really kicking things into gear!

Dana--Stephen usually runs in tights with a pair of shorts over top. I always tell him that he looks like he's wearing panty hose, but I have seen many, many other runners do it up here too. Mizunio always makes looser pants, that looks like sweat pants, but they are for really cold weather running (like 20's), so I think that is too warm for you guys.

I better get to work. Ugh. At least it's hump day. :)

So, what can be done about it I'm wondering...commando is NOT an option so don't go there. I wore all things I have before during training and this time ended up after the half with major rash issues at the bra line. On full day, I carried body glide and applied frequently, but how does one anticipate what areas to use body glide if there has not been problems before? Was it solely due to the extreme heat do you think? I really don't EVER want to go through that again.

I only apply body glide before the race. But I will admit to chafing in strange places during the marathon - I think it was the heat and the HUGE amount of sweat that poured off me. That said, the body glide does help. After one 10k sans bodyglide, I had to have dh CUT the sports bra off me - it still took a ton of skin off but it was better than trying to pull the thing over my head. (yeah I know, more ahem sports bra talk, but in this case it could apply to heart rate straps.)

I see you are in IL. Once you start doing LRs in heat and humidity you might find it more challenging!

Aaahh, this is true. I did the Disney half in 2005 and training for that was in cooler/cold weather. Well, phooey......I'll have to face whatever comes!:scared: And pick up some body glide if needed ;)

Hey guys! Just checking in to say I'm still alive and kickin.
Was out of town a few days last week then I "flew solo" with the baby a few days while DH was out of town working. I haven't had much time to "wog" but have managed to get in one every few days for about an hour or so. My legs are slowly getting stronger, and my c-section scar is getting less tender each time I exercise (TMI I know!). I can not believe that 10 months ago I was running at a 9:30 pace. It feels like I am never going to get back into the swing of things! Much less be able to run 1 measly little mile. I'm just trying to run one step at a time, with no set goals until it's time to train for next year's race. Who knew that babies would be so time consuming? Certainly not me ;)

We are heading down to WDW this Sunday for 4 days. Greg has a conference down there and his company is putting everyone up at CSR. We're taking DM along to help with the baby so I hope to get some wog time in around the lake.
Not going to be the park commando trips we usually take but it will be nice to get away into the warm Florida sunshine for a few days.

~bree~

Jen, doing the FULL wasn't horrible ... Doing the FULL is very manageable if you build up your training slowly....
That Mickey medal is very sweet, and next year's is going to be extra special.....:rolleyes1

I agree with this statement. I am one of those who wrote about how awful the full was to run BUT I had two fantastic 20 mile runs so I know the heat hurt me. Plus, I had some sorta issue with my stomach.
The MAIN reason the full was so hard for me is that I refused to give up my time goal of under 5 hours. If I had allowed myself to walk more, or even stop to take pictures with charactors I think I would have felt better and enjoyed it a whole lot more. If I had stayed with my teammates instead of plodding on alone, I would have enjoyed it more. If I had found a wish teammate on the course to run with I would have enjoyed it more. Dave was right there if I had only tried to find him.

I think you have plenty of time to decide - so run some and build your base and see how your body handles the miles. Not all bodies are built for long distance running! Sometimes a body just refuses to cooperate, in which case, a half marathon is a HUGE achievement.

That said, I am glad I chose to run the full and I am still glad I ran it as hard as I could. I am proud of my time (4:57) but even better, having achieved that time, time is no longer an issue. (and I expect every single one of you to remind me of that over and over again while I am on the course going for Goofy - unless I am risking being swept)

Good Luck!
Cecilia

Oh no--we're not back on the zebra tights again are we???? :rotfl: A couple of weeks ago on my LR my running buddy and I passed a guy wearing tights with flames on them--My buddy says "What would possess someone to wear those???" I said "Well, You could always get zebra stripes instead of flames!" He just looked at me like I was crazy! I take my WISH buddies everywhere!

Chub rub??? Couldn't we call it something a little nicer? I always get a little chafing around my bra line, nothing major--But the morning we did 16 in hte rain I had major problems on my thighs! I wasn't prepared b/c I had never run being that wet before--I was in the shower afterward just screaming from pain--now I know the benefits of vaseline and bodyglide!:thumbsup2 Funny thing though, I mentioned needing to get some bodyglide to DH and he honestly thought I was talking about something kinky!

Well, gotta get to the gym this am!
