Wk of Jan 21--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi All, well I did my 1 hour 10 on the exercise bike Sunday, I tried to go on my real bike. Tim pumped up the tyres, I got it into the back of the car (we live at the top of a very big hill and I wasn't sure that was a good plan the first time on a bike in nearly two years!!) and drove down to my nice flat starting point. Got it out of the car, strapped on my little helmet, started pedalling - and nothing. Someone, mentioning no names (TIM, TIM, TIM) had forgotten to check that the chain was actually connected to the gear thingies - and I don't have a clue!!! So, I popped the bike back in the car and drove to the gym.

Thanks for the link to that sports injury site, apparently I have a fat pad contusion - and I must build more fat under my heel (where's the biscuits!). Annoyingly it repeats the words my physio keeps muttering 'this is a very difficult injury to treat' but does suggest heel pads so that I'm not pounding it when I walk generally so I'll be off to get them today. Tim keeps reminding me that it's less than a week that I've been resting it and they told me 2-3 so I shouldn't panic yet that I still feel it. It is improving slowly

Diane: yep, subject to the above healing at some point in the next 3 months, I'm going Goofy. I'm already planning the trip as a whole, though Tim won't join in as he points out that maybe we should concentrate on the whole emigrating thing first!!! Which brings me to Mel's question, we're off to Sydney, I need to live in a big city for a while. So, that's my lot for today, enjoy this weeks running (weep, weep). Helen

Hey team. I woke up this morning still feeling a little rotten. But then I made the family a great "mom" breakfast and I started feeling better. Then I got the lazies and didn't want to run. Then I ate a very healthy lunch, rested my tummy, and then hit the treadmill. The run was sooooo easy, I am glad I did it. I did 35 minutes: 5 minute warm up, 25 minutes jogging at a 13 MM, then 5 minute cool cool. Instead of intervals, I decided to drop my speed and just run. I know I will continue with intervals for my long runs, but I just felt the need to see what would happen. It felt great!!!

OK, gotta clean up the house a bit. DH and I are going to a show tonight called the Pink Floyd Experience. He is a Floyd fan and my mom gave him the tickets because she didn't want to go (she gets season tickets to the performing arts series). So I am being forced to go along as his date.

Happy Sunday WISH team! The sun finally came out today after more than a week of clouds, and it is finally a little warmer. I plan to go on a short run later. DH is at the hardware store :rolleyes1 and I am in charge of the DDs for a while. He's been gone 1 hour and counting so far.

Mel- On the sock issue, I think you should get a few new pairs. Howard and Lynne raved about Balega socks during marathon weekend so I bought some at Fleet Feet when I got home. They are fantastic! I highly recommend them. They are expensive ($9.99 per pair), but you can find them for a little less on the internet.

I went to Target yesterday and am now the proud owner of lime green running bras. :woohoo: If it's too hot for the Minnie in May, I'll be ready. ;)

Hi Everyone-

I had nightmares about the Goofy all night. I still haven't commited but I appreciate the confidence and the pledge of company.

Christa - I am running the half at Country Music. Dh will be joining me for the first time! I have also heard that it is one of the more fun runs.

DH has It band issues and he has to increase miles very very slowly. His long runs are upto 5 miles without pain now.

We are meeting up with several other couples who run the Country Music Marathon every year. They have a great contest: The couple with the fastest combined time wins. I am not sure what they win other than bragging rights. Dh and I will keep quiet on this because most of these people are FAST.

Oh, is anyone else running the Georgia ING? I am running the half there as well. I am not mentally up for another marathon quite yet.

Cecilia

Cecilia - I have several friends doing the Georgia ING...On the 25th of March? I would love to do it, but it is on a Sunday and I cannot miss too many Sundays due to the Childrens program I am in....I am Spot the dog...HeHe! Ask Phil (Melissa's DH). I bored him with all the details during the WDW marathon...actually he got a kick out of it.
This one (the full) is probably on my list as well this year, because those medals they give out for multiple RnR marathons seem like so much fun... Ideally I'd do both the CMM and the RnR out in San Diego a few months later... But basically, I'm going to be deployed at some point from the next month or two onward, will be gone for at least a couple months, and have no idea which races I'll actually be able to do.

Never ran in to you at Disney though, and although at this point you appear to be well under my pace (I've run 9mpm for a half multiple times, but was closer to 10mpm for the full, and then cramped crashed and burned later on) if you're desperate for company you could try my speed.
Cecilia and Matt...WOW! Maybe we could have a little WISH sighting...well if we really do it. Matt I want to do the full....Hills do not scare me...I live in Charlotte and our routes are really hilly. DH thinks I should do the 1/2. I will be doing a 1/2 in Charlotte on April 14th. So not sure what I will do. Heck we may not even go....I cannot get my hopes up.

About socks...I have no idea! I wear mine until they fall apart...b/c I am CHEAP!

I also used the Balegas for the half and full and didn't have any problems with them. I will probably go out sometime soon and get some more to have for the shorter runs as well.

Hey guys. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Just had to tell you all about my dream last night. I dreamt that Krista and I were traveling with MelR, Christa, and Dave to some event (I don't know where, I just know it wasn't Disney). We decided that the best option for pre-race food would be for us to stop at Dairy Queen for an ice cream cake. :confused3 So we stopped, picked up a cake, and downed the entire thing, then continued on to the race. I woke up before we actually started the race, so I have no idea how effective the ice cream cake was for "pre-race fuel." I'm guessing not so good. :)

I have no idea what brought that dream on, but when I woke up this morning, we had 5 inches of snow of the ground, and I still have to shovel all of it, so I've decided that you guys need to stay out of my dreams from now on. Unless you want to shovel the driveway for me. :)

Hi All,

Melissa – Thanks! Since my longest LR’s to date have been 10 milers, I’m thinking if I vary between 5 – 8 miles with a 9 or 10 every so often might be ok for me. I’m not sure yet if I will do the half again next year or move up to the full. If I decide to move up to the full, then I guess I’ll have to re-think my training to train LR or maybe increase weekday workouts. Hmmmm…..

Sunny – I am sorry that the doc confirmed that you will need the surgery, but pixiedust: that the “when” isn’t for a very long time. And I agree with the others…Yes, you are an athlete! and an amazing one at that!

Cam – I’m very glad you had your “light bulb moment”. I think we (people as a whole) are hardest on ourselves. I think you are an amazing athlete and am very proud of you for not only finishing a full marathon, but finishing under the conditions in which you did. I am very happy that you now realize this and can be proud of yourself and your accomplishments!:thumbsup2

Vic
– HOORAH! And I agree….it is definitely an honor and a privilege to be part of this team!!!!!

Angie – Congratulations on signing up for some races!:woohoo:

Jen – I’m with you, trying to decide between the half & the full for next year. :confused3 That special secret anniversary medal keeps trying to lure me from my original plan of doing the half a second year before moving up to the full.

Anne – Thanks for the reminder from MfM about taking 1 day for every k you raced. I needed that reminder. I’ve been struggling a bit trying to get back into the training to train mode. Great job on getting in your training this week.

Carrie – I didn’t realize that you had gotten the clappers for all of us, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!! My hands & arms hurt enough using the clapper. Can’t imagine how bad they would have felt with out it. It was so very nice of you to think of all of us.

Judy – Thank you for the WISH name badges. I love that they are on a pin so they can be re-used. Right now I have it pinned to my Donald Medal Lanyard right here next to the computer, so I am constantly reminded of both the race & the WISH Team!

Matt – Great job on the trail race!

Congratulations to everyone getting out there training or training to train!

pixiedust: to all with injuries or are sick.

Training this week has been slow. But since I am more years over the 40 (that Anne spoke about in MfM) then I’d care to admit, I guess it is ok for my body to be telling me it needs more rest so take it slow.:rotfl2: I’ve also been dealing with that nasty stomach bug thing so that probably hasn’t helped either. Got to the gym on Tuesday night & since I wasn’t feeling too great decided to walk on the treadmill at a comfortable pace for 35 min. (including warm-up & cool-down). Went to the gym again on Friday night. Did 25 min on the treadmill at run 3 min @ 5mph / walk 2 min @ 4mph (plus warm-up & cool-down.) It was hard adding the extra min of running and the 1 less min of walking, but I survived. When I finished I saw John wasn’t ready to leave yet & I really didn’t feel like doing anything else, so I stayed on the treadmill. Plus, the gym has little tv’s on most of the treadmills, ellipticals, & bikes and I was really getting into the show I was watching.:rotfl: So…for the next 30 min I walked. Started at 3.8 mph and slowly increased to 4.3mph. It sure was tough trying to walk at 4.3 mph.:scared1:

Last night I started having a problem with my right hip hurting & going down my leg some. Not sure if I pushed too much on the treadmill Friday night or if it was being up in the attic for so long yesterday trying to make room & get holiday stuff put away. Maybe it was a combination of both. :confused3 I guess I will let it rest a few days and then see how it is. I’d really like to get back into a normal (whatever normal is?) routine this week.

Happy training!

Karen - those sound like good baseline distances to me. At closed to 8 or 10 you are pretty much ready to start a marathon training program.

Steve - That sounds like good prerace food to me! Sometimes (usually) b/4 an endurance race, i drink an ensure plus (YUCK!!!!!!) I would much rather have the ice cream cake!!!!! Don't you think the cake was the snow and shoveling it down represented you shoveling it!! Just don't count on me to do that work, now to eat the cake, i'm in and i know christa would boast about her ability to do that too. Dave - what about you, can you put the ice cream away???

Stephanie - thank for thinking of me!! I wish i had pics of me on the bridge, but i don't. We need to get back down to little rock soon and play outside. We stopped thru on the way home from disney, but only to eat at igibon!

Good evening fellow WISH team racers. I have gotten back onto the TM to start exercising on a consistent basis again.

I exercised 5 out of 7 days this past week. I accumulated 12.83 miles over 3h 45 min. Not fast enough to beat the sweepers but a start. I am following the half marathon walking plan in "The NON Runner's Marathon Guide for Women" by Dawn Dias. It is very similar to the one in MFM.

Have a great day.

Hi everybody--I hope you all had a great weekend!!

Last week, when I was at the running store, they gave me a free GU shot to try. I haven't used it yet, but I had a question. I know some of you use them, and I was wondering when you use them, and how you like them.

Thanks!!

Laurie

Cecilia and Christa: The Atlanta race would be a possibility too, but it looks like they might sell out (site says only 2,000 slots left, probably sell out in Feb) sooner than I'd know if I could for sure attend unfortunately... The course also looks pretty mentally tough in the last half, a lot of zigzagging up and down streets, and yet another out and back after the 20 mile marker... :scared1:

Hi Laurie - GU is basically a sugar shot! You use them (techincally) when you crank up the mileage enough to need an extra shot of fuel on a run - I only use such goodies if I'm going to be out more than 90 minutes, but other people may take them on shorter or much longer runs. They're a similar thing to something called Cif (sp?) Shots that they give out during the half and full at Disney. You open the packet and suck them down - ideally in easy reach of some water to get rid of the taste.

If you're goingto try using Gu/Cif/Leppin/Jelly beans or whatever though it's important that you practise during training so you can see what they do to your energy levels, and your stomach. If you do like Gu or something else not given out on the course, also remember you'll have to carry your own supplies on race day.

Personally, I can't bear the things, they leave a really sweet taste in my mouth that I just can't handle, I train with Powerade, although I admit that at mile 19 of the marathon, I sucked one down, I knew I can use them so it wasn't a huge risk and I think my body appreciated it. I did save it until the water stop though - a lot of people didn't and I can still see their little screwed up faces now. Helen

Morning Team,

Wow -- already 3 pages.....:scared1:

Well, I'm finally starting to get back into the swing of things...I had my session with my personal trainer -- she totally kicked my butt on Saturday but it's exactly what I needed.

Still have a little bit of congestion from my cold but overall things went well. Tonight I hope to do more crosstrainer....maybe some work on the ellipitical. It will be a couple of months until I run again, just so I can give myself some recovery time.

During the day I will do my best to catch up on what has been written so far for this week.

BTW -- Judy congratulations on signing up for Minnie (at least I think you were the one that signed up). :woohoo:

Have a great day everyone!

Jodi

Oh yeah, ice cream is one of my vices. I worked at Baskin Robbins through high school, and my cats are named Ben & Jerry. Love the ice cream!!!

Morning all, I'm starting to remember who is who so that's good. Anyway up early today and ran on the TM. 6 miles @ 10.32 pace. The distance and pace was fine, but I need to figure out a way to entertain myself when the mileage starts to get longer.

Good morning team:)

I got up early and did my 3 miles on the TM. I usually go at 9:00, but I have a meeting this morning so I'm happy I made myself get up and go! The run wasn't easy because I think I'm fighting an oncoming cold. We'll see.

Great running, everyone! I'm so encouraged by everyone's reports. Thanks for keeping this thread going and welcoming new team members. :)

Have a great Monday!

Go Bears! :thumbsup2

Hi Everyone-

I had nightmares about the Goofy all night. I still haven't commited but I appreciate the confidence and the pledge of company.

Just do it! I had a blast and you can definitely do it:goodvibes If I can do it, I think pretty much everyone else can....true I didn't finish in the time I wanted, but I did it and that was a huge accomplishment.

Morning all! Looks like another rest day for me--but not b/c it's on the schedule. I just have way too much going on today:laundy: , unless I can get to the gym around 6pm it's not going to happen

Laurie--I use Clif Shot Bloks. They aren't the pudding consistency of GUs, but more like a gummy candy.I got a nauseous feeling using the Gu, so I switched to the Shot Bloks. I only use them when I go out for my weekly long runs. I've found what works best for me is 2 of the bloks every 3 miles or so, along with water (no gatorade/powerade)

Well, I hear the kiddos stirring, so I better go!
