Wk of Feb 25--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey folks - this is my first post...I'm not only the lurking husband of Chimera (Mel), but I am also joining the horde here online. Hope y'all don't mind!

I don't know all of you, although I've met many of you at Marathon Weekends. Of course, my recollections consist largely of 'that red-hair guy', 'the lady who passed out', or 'danger-prone Christa', but I'll get better :)

I have to tell you guys - Chimera looked hot in her running skirt!

I'm on the verge of registering for the '08 1/2 WDW Marathon. Mel keeps pokin' me to do it, since I have a pretty good pace (10 minute mile). Unsure what my hangup is.

NOW, since us guys have had to put up with the jog-bra and 'moobs' discussions, I have to ask the guys, please: What's the best way for me to deal with BLEEDING NIPPLES? I thought about band-aids, but I think they'd slip off in a race. Oh, the joy of writing that phrase.

Sure, I could enjoy the fashionable red streaks down the front of my singlet, but I'd rather not look (and feel) like someone angrily twisted off my chest-nubblies.

You guys are great - Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your world (no Mermaid pun intended).

:) Hello and Welcome

The guys at Bobby's Fire Department swear by Body Glide to prevent this problem. But being that I'm a girl:bride: that's the best I can give.

Hi, Jeff, and welcome! :welcome: Sooo glad to see you here! And I am sure Mel looked great in her running skirt.
Howard asked me to tell you that he used body glide for the 1/2 and full (he did Goofy) and had no bleeding nipples.

I LOVE your siggie -- are you a "Heroes" fan? I watch only 1.5 hours a week of TV, all on MOnday night. "Heroes" rocks! Of course, I know NO ONE IRL who watches it except my 13 yr old son.

Oh, forgot to mention to you guys-- Howard and Andy did the father son ski trip on Friday with Andrew's all boy private school. Andy's first time on skis. Today he is sporting a black cast with a pink stripe. Yep, fractured wrist -- "buckle fracture", "chipped bone", "fracture in left wrist joint" -- have heard it described lots of ways since medical center Saturday night and 2 orthopedic specialists this morning. He is cool with it. Never complains.

My TM workout went down the drain tonight with huge crowds at the gym. I did get an elliptical and did a 5K on it. Here are my "splits" :lmao:
mile 1 -- 10:43
mile 2-- 10:34
mile 3 --10:19
.1 -- 0:57
Wish I could do that on the ground! ;)

Ok time to catch up with everyone.

Jim - It always take me to get knocked upside the head before I slow down and listen to my body!! About a year a go I hurt my calf running on the treadmill all of the time. I would not stop until I literally limped off the treadmill crying and it took almost 3 months before I could run again. I won't do that again. BTW I actually had to climb a lot of stairs today to go to my "safety training" but it was ok :)

Kim - I agree with everyone else, KEEP POSTING!! I don't know if you have been before but we LOVE Food and Wine Festival and I have heard wonderful!! things about MNSSHP  And I am partial to RFTT, being our first race. Not too big and great course!

Christy - Once again, AWESOME JOB !!:cool1: I've said it so many times, but it's so true. It is AMAZING what we are capable of if we just keep pushing.

Krista - My knee hurts right on top, it's hard to describe almost like right on top of my knee cap and it actually hurt when you touched it and I could not hold my leg straight out without my leg shaking and it hurt so bad!!! But I am amazed at how much better it is today. I've never had knee problems before :confused3
Leana - I hope your ankle is feeling well.
Cam - That's awesome about weight loss, since I am new I was not aware. I know what you mean though, before we really started running, I lost 35 lbs and I look at myself now and I actually see muscles where I used to see "not muscle". It has been such a long road, but it was SOOOO worth it!
Martha - That trip to NO sounds like soooo much fun :woohoo: Have a WONDERFUL time!!
cARRIE - That boring white just won't work for me!! My nickname at school is PRINCESS! princess: I have always been one to 'break the mold' so we will see. I think I need to prove myself a little before I start breaking out the pink, but when I do I will post a PICTURE!! HE HE!:lmao: That's pretty cool that your parents are in Bradenton. Do you ever come to see them?
I have to say again, THANKS EVERYONE FOR WELL WISHES ON JOB!! I will be taking the week off of running but I am going to the gym tomorrow night (for the first time in a month) for PUMP class (weight class) I can't wait I miss it.

angie

Jeff--go with band aids. They really do work (apparently Body Glide does, too. I didn't know that worked for the, ahem, nipples). Before I tried them, I thought the band-aids would come off due to sweat later in the race, but I've never had one come off. Do be careful, though, when taking them off after the race. Pull them off too fast, and it's a good way to lose tiny pieces of skin and that hurts like the dickens!

There, take that ladies! Bring on the sports bra and running skirts talk! :thumbsup2 (You all know I'm joking around, right?? It just wouldn't be the same without the "interesting" topics around here).

Steve

It could be just me, but I've never had nipple issues when wearing a tight fitting under armour style synthetic wicking tshirt. I'm guessing the issue comes from a shirt such as cotton bouncing up and down as you run and rubbing, whereas a tight one wouldn't move at all?:confused3

Hey Everyone,

BiggerTigger - Welcome to de-lurking!

Angie - Glad the knee is feeling better. Continue to take it easy though. I think maybe I'll give the pink hardhat a try. Of course, since I'm a guy and work in a hospital I might get some strange looks :lmao: .

Martha/Craig - Enjoy your trip. Eat some goodies for me.

Cam - Pass along my "get well soon" to Andy. Bad luck with the all boy school thing too. A skiing cast seems like a pretty good "in" with the ladies;) .

Krista/Steve - I saw that Big Ben and Hines (Ward, not your dog) are scheduled to be appearing in the World this weekend as part of the ESPN deal. Are you taking a quick trip down? (Go Browns! BTW)

I did my 4 miles on the TM last evening. Tough to run inside when it's 50 degrees and sunny out, but someone's got to keep an eye on (well, be in the same house) the kids and DW was at Brownies with DD6. Rest day today and 10 on Thursday.

Have a great day all!

Finally a guy topic. Not a bad first post. Just throw out a fun topic to disucss.

I tried several different things, but found that water proof medical tape works. Easy on and easy off. It stays on during the run and it doesn't hurt. Just a small piece from the roll works.

I tape for runs longer then 10 miles. I know the friction differs on the shirt material, but it is just easier to tape and be done with it.

I don't want to come home from a marathon and see my finishi line pictures covered with red streaks!

Now the real question is.....do you tape the "innies" as well as the "outies"?:confused3 :lmao:

Well I got to run outside again yesterday:woohoo: I dont know my pace becasue my Garmin freaked out & lost about .3 of a mile somehow:confused3 I had looked at it & it was at 2.3 and then about a quarter of a mile later it was at 2.12. I know it was 14 something including warm up. But it felt great to be outside & I got those steps in. Going to Curves this a.m. before heading out to a field trip with 4th grade to the science center.

Jeff-You could always borrow one of Mel's running bras. Noone has ever had a bloody nipple problem wearing a bra:laughing:

Krista-my DH is an engineer & when people ask me what he does my usual response it "I dont know?":confused3 Well, actually I do know but until about a year ago I really didnt. He does software design/development now so its easier to explain. However, I live in the Silocon Valley of the south. 75% of the men here are engineers of some type. BTW, closet organizing, deep house cleaning...I'm jeaous my house badly needs some attention:eek:

Angie-I am so glad your knee is feeling better.

Cam-Awe, poor Andrew. He's such a sweety! Give him our get well wishes!

Carrie-Good for you for "getting back on that horse"!!! And multi tasking too, very impressive.

Kim-WTG on getting outside!!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Jeff - :welcome: And gee, I wish I could particpate in the nipple discussion... :rotfl: .

Cam - Glad to hear Andy is ok! I am just waiting for Zack to break something - it's bound to happen. I was even kicking myself for not getting him ski lessons this year (they start at 3 years old). Now, I'm thinking it was good that I forgot to do that in the fall! My sister & I learned to ski really early. Although my sister did break her leg at three skiing...then again, she also broke her skull & arm also by the time she was 6! :lmao:

Again, I got about 5 hours sleep last night. I am feeling like I was hit by that same mac truck again. I am probably going to skip my 3 miler today and rest up for tomorrow's 5.

Kristi – I am still available if you need to make any after-concert calls regarding your stalking activities! And I am sure all your WISH friends will be glad to help with bail money, if necessary!

Ok. Everyone here is on alert for March 23rd, April 20th and possibly April 21st! ;)
(for the newbies, I am really not a stalker - I am pretty much all talk, and then freeze when I do manage to get near my GGDs!)

Krista/Steve - I saw that Big Ben and Hines (Ward, not your dog) are scheduled to be appearing in the World this weekend as part of the ESPN deal. Are you taking a quick trip down? (Go Browns! BTW)

Mike--I hadn't seen that yet. That's awesome! Now if we can just swing a very last minute trip down south....

Jeff - Welcome. I pretty much just use Band-aids. They have a style that doesn't come off easily. I haven't had a problem yet.

Angie - Good luck on the new job and finishing up your degree. A pink hat would definately stand out in the crowd though.

Cam - Hope DS wrist heals quickly. Although now he should know what not to do on skis. ;)

Tiff - Sorry to hear about your Garmin but missing only that much shouldn't change the overall pace that much. Unless you were going with a sprint of 4 min/mile at the time.

Kristi - Should we ask about your 5 miler tomorrow or just anxiously wait around for the report. :rolleyes1

Bill

Drive by....

I just signed up for Applefest '07:banana:

Yesterday was a 3 miler avg pace 10:40.

I'll catch up soon.

Sunny

Jeff

Thanks for a guy topic. Enough of that skirt talk.

I use white athletic tape to cover the spots. It doesn't come off and if I'll be out there a long time I make it in the shape of a cross with the double layer on the tender spot.

Also, underarmour tops do not cause problems, even without the tape. The material is smooth and slick and has never given me grief. On the other hand, mesh racing singlets are terrible. They cause lots of friction and let in air and the combination = chafing if you're lucky and blood if you aren't.

Take care

Craig

Good morning all! On the um topic of the day :rolleyes1 DH uses round Curad band-aids. They stay on with no problem and take off less skin when you take them off. I did 30 minutes of XT yesterday, mostly stretching and weights. Today is a rest day.

:welcome: Jeff! You have been such a great WISH scream team member for so long. It is great to have you as part of the racing team.

We are all so blessed to have great spouses who support us, and in many cases, participate with us. A little known fact about Jeff for all the newbies, he and the girls were waiting at the finish line with a trophy for Mel when she finished the 1/2 marathon in 2006. He has always been her #1 cheerleader. :cheer2:

Where is Helen? I am dying to hear more about the move to Australia. Most importantly, is there enough room for guests? :confused3

Mike--I hadn't seen that yet. That's awesome! Now if we can just swing a very last minute trip down south....

Hey Steve,

We are leaving tomorrow for Disney! We had no idea it was ESPN weekend when we booked!

As for nipple talk, yes DH uses band-aids too!

Sunny, yeah for signing up for Applefest!

Colleen

Heather, that is a cute story about Jeff's trophy for Mel!:cheer2:

Bill, do you have that baby room ready yet?

Tiff, yeah for getting out for your workouts! I think it is great that your are substitute teaching so much.:thumbsup2 I am a teacher, tutor Algebra and Trig out of my home, but hate substitute teaching!

Matt, congrats on your great half running times.:thumbsup2 Wow, you are a machine.

Angie, so glad you ankle is feeling better. Congrats on your new job too! When is your 5K?
Oh, PUMP class!!!!! I love, love, love  Pump classes. I did them religiously when I lived in Canada and I was really toned, but no one offers them down here. I am trying to get out local YMCA to bring it in, but they say it is too expensive!:confused3

DH arrived home from his overseas trip on Monday. So glad to have him home. Must go start packing for out little trip down to Disney. We are going for 4 nights and staying at WL! Oh, also got in a long run, 9 miles in 1:31!!:dance3:

Colleen

Good morning, Team!!!!! Happy Hump Day!!! I ran 3.5 miles last night, I bumped up to r4/w2 and ran about 45 seconds faster per mile. Woo-hoo! :woohoo: :woohoo: My quad was tight for the entire run which makes me nervous--my IT band issues always start up in my quad and then it works it's way down my leg. I could also "feel" my hip turning inward as I was running, which I've read can cause IT band issues. I think I am definitely switching shoes though and trying the Mizuno Wave Alchemy 6. When I originally got my New Balance 857's back in the summer, the guy recommended the Mizuno's, but I decided to stick with the brand I knew. But I am wondering if the 857's aren't giving my feet enough support. Last week I got on a website (Road Runner Sports maybe?) and I was able to compare several different motion control shoes; I did the Mizuno Wave Alchemy's, NB 857's, Asics Gel Kanyano's and Asics 1122 (?)GT--the Asics and Mizunos both had lots of things listed in the special features column, but the NB 857's had nothing. That kind of made my mind up for me. So, it's shoe shopping I go, but unfortunately I'm not going to have time until next week.

Jeff--:welcome: I'm so glad you came out of lurking mode!! I guess with more and more guys officially joining the Wish team, we have to keep the girl talk on the down low. :)

Mike/Optimator--Hines Ward is going to be at WDW THIS weekend?? :faint: :faint: :faint: Do you think it would be rude to blow off Stephen's family and his nephew’s first birthday party and head south?? ;)

Mike/GoofyGuy--Thanks for the IT Band stretch, I tried it last night and it felt great. I used to do a stretch similar to that, but instead of raising your arm over your head ballerina style, you would keep your hand on your hip. Raising the arm over the head really stretched the leg out better; I could feel the muscles pulling as I was doing it.

Angie--A pink hard hat? You are cute. :cutie: If your knee is hurting on the kneecap, that's definitely not your IT band, it sounds like runner's knee to me. Keep resting it, icing it, take Advil or ibuprofen, and most importantly, don't over it on Saturday!!!!

Tiffany--How warm is it in AL? For the right temperature, I will gladly come down and clean your house. I'm getting sick of the cold weather and ugly, half melted, muddy snow! Great job getting the steps in last night! Did you make it to Curves this morning?

Cecilia--Congrats on the new house!!! :wizard: for getting your house on (and off ;)) the market quickly! We built our house in 2003 and I loved every aspect of it and we are definitely going to build again.

Kim--Definitely keep posting!!!!! This is a thread for running ANY event, not just the WDW marathon.

Cam--Poor Andrew!!!! I'm glad that's he okay!!!!

Carrie--You are always welcome to come and run with me! Great job for getting back out there and not being scared!

Christa--Are you feeling any better?

I know I missed lots of people, but I need to get started on my work. Work really cuts into my Dis-ing time!!! :sad2:
