That's right ladies and gents, another weekend, another race report!
Today we come to you from the Mardis Gras Marathon held in New Orleans, LA. We arrived on Saturday around noon, and finding it was too early to check into our hotel, went to the expo to register/pick up my packet. They had tons of race gear and apparel, and it was only by the skin of my teeth that I got out of there without spending a fortune. We then went to the National World War II Museum (formerly known as the D-Day Museum) which was very educational and interesting. There were several very high tech and well done exhibits. Even the young children we passed along the way seemed to get a good understanding of the chronology and sequence of events that led up to and following D-Day and the wars in both Europe and the Pacific. After that we tooled around the French Quarter, DW completed an apparent rite of passage by purchasing some variation of alcohol on Bourbon Street (this was her first trip to NO) and we got some beignets at one of the cafes (which she decided were overrated donuts). Dinner was at the Gumbo shop, where I had this four course combination authentic creole/cajun meal which was quite good stuff!
Oh yeah, and then the next day was the race!
Background, lifetime PR is 1:57:31 going into this, and just one week ago I ran a 1:59:01. Just this month I've run 2 previous HM's and a 15k, so this was my 4th lengthy race in a 3 week span. (and yes still possibly going to be crazy enough to do 2 more HM's next weekend)
Started off 15 seconds slower than last week which was part of my strategy, but the second mile ended up 15 seconds faster than last week, so that negated my "go out slow" plan. Also discovered a weakness in the Forerunner 205 during this early downtown section. When surrounded by humongously tall buildings, it gets a little wobbly.

On Sporttracks the course zigzagged some down the street, and it ended up about .2 long over the 13.1 course, not too bad though. Through the French Quarter we went past Jackson square, and then out past some gorgeous plantation style houses and then further out into the projects. There was then a large out and back portion between a park and a river, with one large overpass uphill/downhill which was actually a break from the monotony of flatness, as the rest of the course essentially was pancake. The marathoners were on the same course, they just came within 50 yards of the finish, made a right turn, and went on another THIRTEEN MILE out and back out to nowhere'sville before turning around and heading back to the finish. Felt sorry for them I did, I doubt I'd do the full there.
Somewhere along the way I realized I was stringing together a bunch of fast miles. The running joke was you can't complain about the altitude, because most of the race was below sea level!

At about the 6 or 7 mile mark as I downed 3 Clif Blox (tough to chew when they get stuck in your teeth while you're trying to breathe) I realized I'd basically made up enough time on sup 2:00 pace to be on PR pace, as long as I held 2:00 pace for the remainder of the race. This turned out to be easier said than done, as every mile it seemed like I was trying harder, but I kept getting slower. 9:10mpm is the average for a 2:00 HM, and to set a new PR would have to be 8:58mpm or faster. So now, the splits!
Miles: 8:41, 8:30, 8:46, 8:43, 8:46, 8:34, 8:54, 8:48, 8:56, 8:53, 9:06, 9:07, 9:05, 1:57
Total:
1:56:54 LIFETIME PR!
Avg: 8:55mpm
Unbelievable! I thought I'd be more fatigued than average after all these races, but although the last few miles did slow compared to the earlier ones, I still cut 37 seconds off my PR! In the grand scheme of things one realizes that's less than 3 seconds per mile difference, but hey, I've never run faster in my whole life over that distance so that's saying something.
I can now relax as I face the continuing challenge, the Snickers HM in Albany, GA and the Seaside HM in FL on Sat/Sun this coming weekend. My plan is to run those at marathon pace, something like 2:12:00, and treat it like I was running a full that weekend, just lucky enough to get an overnight break halfway through. Given only half of Disney turned out that fast (the second half was more like 3:19) it might get interesting...
Looking forward to seeing Anne and Vic and whoever else makes it out though!
Edit: did I mention the bling? Some neat lime green/purple colored mardi gras style medals! Albany and Seaside are giving out medals too for you other bling addicts.
