Wk of Feb 25--WISH Walking/Running Club

Stopping in to check on everybody. three pages already on the first day of the week. WOW! I haven't been around here much in the last 2 weeks. Tried to read posts when I could. Sometimes it's depressing to read about everyone training and I'm on IR :sad2: .

My surgery is Thursday. I did find out the correct name of the procedure. It's called Topaz and the machine used is the Arthrotec machine. I've been reading about it on-line and it looks promising. Allows for shorter recovery time. :) I hope that's the case.

Sounds like everyone is doing well with their workouts. Keep up the good work!

Terri

Christy - That sounds like my kind of race. Although I'm not sure how appealing their food would be after running though. Was that the one in Orlando or is there another Outback race in Florida.

Yep, the one in Orlando, I live right outside of Orlando:) The food was really good--some Ceasar Salad, Steak Bites, Grilled Chicken, Rice, and Chicken Tenders--YUMMY!!

Hello all! Nothing really to report here--but I've had a pain free day w/regards to my foot!:cool1: Resting again tomorrow--may hit the gym for arm works--going crazy not doing anything--have replaced my workout time, with eating. No wonder people gain weight during taper!

Christa--Wow on the pace! 8:30 is awesome!

Krista--definitely go out and buy more shoes!

Kristi--glad to hear that Disney obsessions are common here--with our trip to Minnie in the works now--we will be there 3 times this year as well.

terri--good luck with the surgery! Praying for short recovery time!

tiff--They have a gym on the crusie ship???? Hmmm, never noticed that--the midnight dessert buffet must've been blocking my view!:lmao:

Well, off to ice my foot (got to say icing works wonders) and then hit the sack. I worked for 6hrs straight today in the pharmacy--first time since we moved here back in July. I'm beat! Good thing with my "full-time" job, I can work in pjs tomorrow!;)

Cam...thanks for the heads up on the tennis skirts. The skirt issue was kinda bugging me so I'm working on something new. I've also been having problems finding shorts with pockets and tights that I like. Compression shorts/tights are pretty simple construction...I went up to the fabric store and got some spandex, cut a pattern on wax paper from a simple pair of Champion tights I have that fit and made prototype A...neon lime green compression shorts that I was planning to put a black skirt over. Unfortunately, the lime green was nearly as sheer as the pink Triks shorts, but at least I know my pattern is good. I can make the shorts in about an hour, so I'll try with black next and maybe put the lime green as a skirt over it. I can add bells and whistles once I get the prototype together...Ipod pocket with velcro closure and hole for the cord (just a small buttonhole should do), drawstring at the waist, extra pockets, etc!

I'm kinda excited. Biggest problem will be finding Coolmax that's available retail. I can get all kinds of cool spandex (even zebra!), but wicking fabric is harder to get. If I can get ahold of the polyester wicking fabric, I'd like to make the skirt from that rather than spandex. And I can make shirts all day if I find wicking fabric...they're pretty simply constructed too. I'll post pictures when I get the first one set up.

Melissa...somehow I missed the kayak event, but that's my biggest nightmare every time we put the boats up on the roof. I never imagined the whole rack falling off though  We're planning to get back out there soon, now that it's warming up again. Wild thing has a Barbie life vest she's dying to tryout.

Ashley...Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David Whitsett et al. I bought it at the same time I bought MFM. Non-Runner's is more for training your brain.

Terri...good luck with your surgery! Let us know how your 10K goes!

Bill...it was crowded at EPCOT and MK, but we did get good seats on Main street for the 3pm parade. We told Lenna that we would ride the Nemo ride, but the line was all the way out the front of Living Seas and almost to the Land. There was even a line for the Figment ride which is always a walk-on. We did get to ride Cinderella's Carousel with Mary Poppins.

Krista...I have a shoe fetish too, probably why I can't just pick one running shoe and stick with it. That's been the biggest problem with the PF...I am really limited in what shoes I can comfortably wear now.

Dave...you are hardcore! I can't even imagine temps that cold.

Jim...DD14 is not a big fan of training either. She likes racing for the bling and the fact that she usually places somewhere in the top 5 or 6 for her age group. All that without training.

Christa...you look great after 8 miles!

Leana...Calgary sounds like a great place to run!

I don't have much going on with taper this week. Just two little 30 min runs then the half on Sunday. I'm pretty sure I can PR this weekend...I'm shooting for 2:45, but will be happy with sub-3:00. DH is getting more involved. He's been reading MFM and set up the old Garmin so that it's all about him and not me now. He even mentioned finding a race that we could do together for an anniversary weekend (sounds like Marine Corps marathon may be in our future :yay: ) BTW, has anyone ever done a vow renewal? This year is 10 for us so we're thinking about it.

Good Evening -

TRAINING REPORT !!! :goodvibes

Did not do the full 9 with DH but did 5 MILES IN 40 MINUTES :cool1:  Sorry I'm a LITTLE excited!! It probably helped that I was running home by myself, in the dark which I am scared to do. The adrenaline was pumping. :scared1:

Leana Good luck on beginning your Minnie training tomorrow!! :thumbsup2 It's so fun to have a goal to work towards.
Colleen Thank you so much for the encouragement. I have gone from feeling like I can't do anything, to maybe a I can do something, with a little persistence.
Bill Maybe we will see you at Sarasota 1/2 DS's and I will be there to cheer on DH.
TiffJ I think it's funny when I see people still wearing panty hose because I have not worn them in so long. Actually the job I got is in Marine Construction so I bought some shoes that kind of look like boots, but aren't really. They are acutally kind of cute, how do you say "Trendy". They are from the Junior's dept so they must be "COOL":lmao: The kids at school help keep me straight on all that stuff :scared:
Kristi Thanks for sharing, everytime DH even starts to complain about AP's I tell him how much we are getting our money's worth.:dance3:
Terri I hope the surgery goes well. :flower3:

Off to do yet more HW!! :headache:

Angie

Mel -did you find coolmax? I've looked for some but never find it. The kayak thing was crazy!!! I've never really considered the possiblity of the rack coming off the car!!! Yakima has already sent me all the replacement parts. the bike racks they sent are nicer than the ones i had on. I'm going to use it in the morning!!!

Christa - I had to show phil the pic of you and your sis. HE of course said "wow, are they twins"

Dave - did your gel have caffiene? That gets my stomach upset sometimes. Did you go out early after morning coffee? That could do it too. You seemed to maintain a good pace for feeling yucky!!

That's right ladies and gents, another weekend, another race report!

Today we come to you from the Mardis Gras Marathon held in New Orleans, LA. We arrived on Saturday around noon, and finding it was too early to check into our hotel, went to the expo to register/pick up my packet. They had tons of race gear and apparel, and it was only by the skin of my teeth that I got out of there without spending a fortune. We then went to the National World War II Museum (formerly known as the D-Day Museum) which was very educational and interesting. There were several very high tech and well done exhibits. Even the young children we passed along the way seemed to get a good understanding of the chronology and sequence of events that led up to and following D-Day and the wars in both Europe and the Pacific. After that we tooled around the French Quarter, DW completed an apparent rite of passage by purchasing some variation of alcohol on Bourbon Street (this was her first trip to NO) and we got some beignets at one of the cafes (which she decided were overrated donuts). Dinner was at the Gumbo shop, where I had this four course combination authentic creole/cajun meal which was quite good stuff!

Oh yeah, and then the next day was the race!

Background, lifetime PR is 1:57:31 going into this, and just one week ago I ran a 1:59:01. Just this month I've run 2 previous HM's and a 15k, so this was my 4th lengthy race in a 3 week span. (and yes still possibly going to be crazy enough to do 2 more HM's next weekend)

Started off 15 seconds slower than last week which was part of my strategy, but the second mile ended up 15 seconds faster than last week, so that negated my "go out slow" plan. Also discovered a weakness in the Forerunner 205 during this early downtown section. When surrounded by humongously tall buildings, it gets a little wobbly. :upsidedow On Sporttracks the course zigzagged some down the street, and it ended up about .2 long over the 13.1 course, not too bad though. Through the French Quarter we went past Jackson square, and then out past some gorgeous plantation style houses and then further out into the projects. There was then a large out and back portion between a park and a river, with one large overpass uphill/downhill which was actually a break from the monotony of flatness, as the rest of the course essentially was pancake. The marathoners were on the same course, they just came within 50 yards of the finish, made a right turn, and went on another THIRTEEN MILE out and back out to nowhere'sville before turning around and heading back to the finish. Felt sorry for them I did, I doubt I'd do the full there.

Somewhere along the way I realized I was stringing together a bunch of fast miles. The running joke was you can't complain about the altitude, because most of the race was below sea level! :rotfl: At about the 6 or 7 mile mark as I downed 3 Clif Blox (tough to chew when they get stuck in your teeth while you're trying to breathe) I realized I'd basically made up enough time on sup 2:00 pace to be on PR pace, as long as I held 2:00 pace for the remainder of the race. This turned out to be easier said than done, as every mile it seemed like I was trying harder, but I kept getting slower. 9:10mpm is the average for a 2:00 HM, and to set a new PR would have to be 8:58mpm or faster. So now, the splits!

Miles: 8:41, 8:30, 8:46, 8:43, 8:46, 8:34, 8:54, 8:48, 8:56, 8:53, 9:06, 9:07, 9:05, 1:57
Total: 1:56:54 LIFETIME PR!
Avg: 8:55mpm

Unbelievable! I thought I'd be more fatigued than average after all these races, but although the last few miles did slow compared to the earlier ones, I still cut 37 seconds off my PR! In the grand scheme of things one realizes that's less than 3 seconds per mile difference, but hey, I've never run faster in my whole life over that distance so that's saying something.

I can now relax as I face the continuing challenge, the Snickers HM in Albany, GA and the Seaside HM in FL on Sat/Sun this coming weekend. My plan is to run those at marathon pace, something like 2:12:00, and treat it like I was running a full that weekend, just lucky enough to get an overnight break halfway through. Given only half of Disney turned out that fast (the second half was more like 3:19) it might get interesting...

Looking forward to seeing Anne and Vic and whoever else makes it out though! :thumbsup2

Edit: did I mention the bling? Some neat lime green/purple colored mardi gras style medals! Albany and Seaside are giving out medals too for you other bling addicts. ;)

Oh running in downtown Calgary is the best! I have two sisters and a brother who live in Calgary. One sister lives in Erlton near Stampede grounds/Saddledome and she and I run the paths anytime I am up for a visit. Love it! She is much fast than I, but I do my best to keep pace with her. I have ran the Stampede half marathon the last two years and had a great time.

Colleen - You'll have to let me know if you sign up for the race this year. I just entered the half last week - my first half that I'll have ever run. The race is July 8. I'm super excited - it should be a fun event!

Congrats, Matt!! You may become our "Dean" for the WISH board! How many halfs can the body do while working a full time job? I'll be eating your dust next weekend!

Chimera/Mel, my goodness, woman! You best be careful!! Orders for skirts will start flying your way and you can stop all this PA stuff...:lmao:
:goodvibes Anne

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Not much training for me yesterday as it was a rest day. Like Martha said, good for doing chores around the house. Around 4:00p, we did take the princesses, DD6 princess: and DD9 princess: sledriding. Here's what a nerd I am - I decided to wear my Garmin while sledriding. I was kind of curious how far we go up and down the hill. It was almost a mile for me (0.86), and the princesses definitely went further as they went up and down the hill more than I did. My fastest time down the hill was 3:30 mpm - wheeeeeeeee.

Jim- Congrats on beating your son. How's he dealing with it?

Christa- Great job on your 16 miler! That's so fun that you are running with your sister. Oh, and no chickens were kicked during my run. [I'm so excited that you and Melissa are teaching me a new language - Southern.]

Krista- Nice job on your 5 miler. WTG! So did you put your 4 inch heels on the high, high shelves of your closet?

Mike/Goofyguy- I'm looking forward to reading your race report.

Ashley- Good job getting out there and getting your 10 miler in. Yes, some runs feel like they are pulling teeth. You got through it, you learned you need to rest the day before, and I bet your 12 miler in 2 weeks will be much, much better.

Kristi- How did your 7 miler go on Sunday? Did I miss it? Let's see I read about GGD obsession, scrapping, APs, but I don't remember reading about the run. ;)

Terri- Good luck with your surgery. I hope it goes well, and I'm WISHing you all the best.

Stephanie- Yahoo! Pain free day, that's awesome.

Mel- Wow, I'm always amazed at people that can make their own clothes. That is so cool. I'm jealous you can make your own running skirts. Not that I want a running skirt, but, you know what I mean. Have fun with your taper week. I can't wait to hear about your half on Sunday.

Angie- You did 5 miles in 40 min!!! Wow, that is awesome. 8 min miles, shoot, I'm jealous... WTG!

Melissa- Hmmm, my GU did have caffeine, and I did go out early after morning coffee. But, that's what I've been doing for a year now and it never bothered me before. Oh well, hopefully it won't be a chronic problem.

Matt- Congratulations on the Half Marathon PR!!! That is incredible. WTG!!!

Well, I got the dates mixed up in my head somehow. I went to check the RFTT site & it is on the day we leave for the cruise. So the good news is I can eat all I want & not have to worry about trying to do a race afterwards. Bad news is, if I do the race (and I really, really want to!) I will have to scurry out of there right after to head to the port. DH says we can still do it. I need that medal for my collection!!!!!!!

Matt-AWESOME:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Terri-:wizard: for your surgery & speedy recovery!

Krista-umm, so you finished yours & havent shown up to do mine yet:confused3

Angie-I've never actually seen it, but I've heard others speak of this strange place :scratchin

Krista - I don't think either you or Carrie have to worry about me giving you a run for the money. Although if I split it up a little, I might be able to increase the post count...;)

Terri - Good luck with your surgery. I hope the recovery time is quick for you.

Christy - We have thought about doing that race and if they ever offer cheese fries and Alice Springs Chicken afterwards, we will be there in a heartbeat. :rotfl:

Mel - How do you find time to make your own cloths as well. You must have figured out a way to slow time down a little. Although now that everyone knows, you will have more than enough requests to fill up any spare time. ;)

Angie - We will keep an eye out for you at the half. We are hopeing for some nice cool weather to run in. Congrats on the run, you are just speeding right along.

Matt - Way to go on the race and the new PR. Glad to hear that you had a good time in New Orleans.

Dave - You were flying down that hill. A little under 20 mph. Since we don't have the opportunity to go sledding down here, are there brakes on those things or do you just hope you don't encounter any obstacles.

Bill

Good morning team. Quick training update

This morning I did my R1 W2 and was a bit faster then Sat. In 30 mins I did 2.20 miles and shaved a full min off my 2M time. Did 2 miles in 27:63. I am so pumped. Do you all think it is enough to do this route every other day and just XT on the off days?? I am afraid of risking injury when I am only 5 weeks from my first 10K??? Any advise would be apprecited.

Thanks
Kim

I am sitting here :surfweb: SICK! I started feeling bad on Sat night, but thought I was just sore from the 16 miles....NO! I AM SICK.....AGAIN! I feel like someone just beat me up with a sledge hammer!

Anyway!

Matt - WTG on your PR! That is Awesome!

Angie! WOW on your 5 mile run. You were flying girl.:yay:

Terri - Good luck with your surgery. Lots of Prayers to you!:wizard:

Now Dave, you were kick'n chick'n on that sled....I am not sure if that is Southern talk or just my messed up talk! I have some crazy sayings! I too sometimes get sick on runs...so seeing that you finished so well was AWESOME!:cheer2:

I know I have missed so many people, but I must go to the couch until my head doen't feel like it is going to explode...."Ker Pow":headache:

Matt--WTG!!!!:cool1: :cool1: That's an awesome pace!!!!

Angie--You go girl! You are flying--looks like I"ll be chasing you down at the Minnie, not the other way around!;)

Christa--Please take care of yourself!:grouphug: Believe me, I've been there more often than I care to remember this winter. Oh, and the other day the wind was really howling here, we were all in the car, and I said "Boy that wind is really kick'n chick'n!" And DH looked at me as if I'd gone off the deep end!

Dave--that was some super-fast sledding! Interesting what uses we can find for those running toys!

Well, better go--DS is ready to get up. Have a great Monday all!

Kristi- How did your 7 miler go on Sunday? Did I miss it? Let's see I read about GGD obsession, scrapping, APs, but I don't remember reading about the run. ;)
:rolleyes1 There's a reason I talked about everything under the sun, besides the 7 miles...and here I thought I got away with it! :rolleyes1

Christa - get well soon!

Krista - I'm with Tiffany...when are you coming to clean out our closets?

Mel - I haven't done a vow renewal, but I think it's a great idea! Well, unless you are like Jim's wife and still weighing your options. ;-)

Matt-- wow! Congrats on the PR. You are a racing machine:banana:

Dave-- I used to have a lot of stomach issues when I ran. But now that I maintain a much slower pace I never do. If it continues to be a problem, maybe try slowing down a bit to see if that helps.

Terri-- Good luck with the surgery. Sounds like they've got a good plan for you.

Kim-- If you feel worried about risking injury, I'd say pull back on the running and do more cross-training up until your 10K. It's your first, right? Remember the golden rule of racing: Your only goal for the first race is to finish!

Stephenanie-- Ya for a pain free day!

I had TWO rest days this weekend, bringin my week 5 training to a 3 day rest week. But I got in three good runs and one strong xt so I'm on going to stress over it. I'm having a lot of pain, so I'm going to email my dr and see if I can increase my Neurontin. No Lahey dr ever gave me their email address! I went to a V-day/Winter Fest at a colleague's house yesterday. His daughter (17) had a car accident and has had back pain for the past two years. We talked alot and she told me she goes the the Mass General pain clinic. I found their website on line and it looks good. So I might look into that.

Sunny

Sorry I have been MIA for so long. I have been sick with bronchitis for 6 weeks, but I am finally feeling better. Funny how going to the doctor and getting antibiotics can help. :confused3 I should not have put off the doctor's visit for so long. Work is super busy right now, and I have not been working out like I should. Today is my first day of training for the Minnie. I am determined to get back into the groove. I have a 5K on Saturday, which I am looking forward to.

Matt- Way to go on your 1/2! Good luck next weekend! You better get some rest this week. It sounds like Anne is ready to rumble!

Christa- Sending lots of :wizard: that you feel better soon.

Mel- Good luck in your 1/2 this weekend! You will be awesome! :cheer2:

Happy Monday everyone!
