Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning Team... I am at work and we are really short staffed. It seems that people are either sick or on vacation. So I am not sure if I will be able to run to the Y at lunch and get in a work out. POOOO...

I am feeling better this morning, still some tummy ache and a headache. I drank a little coffee and took some Tylenol with hopes it will help the headache. I have a conference call in a bit, and then will see if I can slip out to the Y... fingers crossed. I am usually the one stuck pulling the slack since I am a "higher up".

Congrats to everyone that got in their training runs or races. I did a measly 35 minutes on the treadmill on Saturday. I wanted to do at least 4 miles on Sunday, but with my tummy bug it didn't happen. Today I think I will cross train if I can get to the Y, otherwise I will try to hit the TM when I get home. I also run out of time at night now that we are doing extra work with DD6's reading. Not that I am complaining because I really don't want her to fall behind... it is just one more thing that eats at my time. I guess I will just have to give up the household chores!!! :laundy:

Stephanie - Yikes... I hope you get better soon!!!

Krista - I was wondering where you have been!!

MelR - Awesome on finishing. I hope your knee feels better soon. I would have freaked if I had to wade through water!!!

Jim - Great race!!! For some reason I want to call you Scuba Steve! :confused3

Have a great day all... I am off to my conference call.

Just a quick update - I finished the 2.5 mile week on Couch to 5K and found that jump to be a bit difficult. It was tough for me to do the whole distance at a good pace. I have decided to continue upping the mileage but will go to run/walk plan going forward. I tried R3/W1 on Saturday which worked well until I got up to a 10 minute mile pace when I dropped back to R1/W1. I finished my 5K that day in 38:40 which is a PR for me.

The exciting thing is that I am starting to see real muscles! Even when I ran the WDW Half I didn't have those.

Mel - I love the new WISH wear but where will will have the slogans printed?:scared1:

Happy training all!

Good morning all!!!

Liz-- :welcome:

Angie-- Way to go!!! :thumbsup2

Mel R-- Wowza!! :scared1: Congrats!!

Jim-- Congrats!! Great PR!

Matt-- I'm totally jealous of all your racing. I'm SO sick of the treadmill (and going slow because of it) that I'm dying to get outside.

Mel-- Oh yes, just what I need-- a lime green thong. (As though the people on this board don't talk about me enough already.........)

This weekend was sort of a bust. 5 miles on the treadmill on Thursday night (in 49-something) and then some weight workouts Friday and Saturday. I am very very sick of having to run on the treadmill. Hopefully that will recitfy itself this weekend with some warmer weather (supposedly). I keep trying to tell myself that spring is just around the corner, then I remember that I live in Michigan, where spring doesn't come every other year. :guilty:

You know, I really need to build 10 minutes into every morning to check in so it doesn't take me a half hour to read through everything and respond. ;)

Happy training!
Kevin :earsboy:

MelR: great job on the race but it does sound brutal. :thumbsup2

Jim: awesome job. Did you happen to get a picture of you prior to the race in all the gear? I have this mental image of socks dangling off your hands and the sleeve on your head....hee hee

Krista: I have the new iPod shuffle that I received as a birthday gift from Craig. I'm amazed at how much technology can go into such a teeny-tiny little item. I love clipping it on so I don't have to hold it. It's great not holding anything while I run.

Kevin: I'm there with you about treadmills. I do not like running on them and will do anything I can to avoid them. Sometimes I have no choice but to use it. We've been lucky this year that it's just been the last month that hasn't been conducive to outdoor running. I can't imagine all winter running on one. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the weekend holds some better weather. Here's some PD to help! pixiedust:

Speaking of TMs, I ran 2 miles of speed work on that thing this morning. I have to admit that it felt good. 3 min of slow, 1 min of fast. Hip held up well too. Tomorrow is a rest day.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Matt – Woo hoo on the half! Be careful next few weeks, K?

Kristi - Congrats on the tix! You got the steps in. That’s all that matters. Glad your wog felt a little better!

CJ – Thanks for the sayings. I’m confused, though. On the TM, you’re not going any direction. ;-)

Melissa – Way to go!!! We were thinking about you this weekend (for the 50K and because Scott found a run in Durand). :wizard: Hoe the knee heals quickly.

Stephanie – Woo hoo on the run,. Hope you’re feeling better soon! BTW – Do the Minnie!!!!

Jim – Congrats on the race!!!

Dave – OMG!!! SO glad you’re safe. DH and I notice that drivers run stop signs all the time so that they don’t have to stop for us. Ugh!

DreamBeliever – Welcome!

Kim10110 – Welcome back! Thanks for all you do!

Christy – WTG on the 30 minutes!! It took dh and I about 4 months of training to get to that point our first year.

Angie – Way to go!!!!!

Jen -:wizard: Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Ashley – Welcome back! Lol on the TM game!

Steve – Good to see you! Shame on you for pushing to hard. Don’t let it happen again, or we’ll make Krista punish you. ;) :wizard: for your IT band!

John – Way to go on the training and taking the stairs!!! Great job!!

Karen – Hope life gets less crazy soon!

Jackie – You tried. At least you got the mile in!

Kim – At least you got the steps in. hope you’re back to normal soon!

Helen – Congrats on the toe nail! ;)

Leana – Way to go!!!

Mel – Great job with the pace!!!! :lmbo: on the undies!

Tinks – Hope the eating gets better soon for you. I am there myself. Ugh!

Liz – Welcome!!!

Martha – Great intervals. I’m starting to worry about keeping up with you after my 5k time!

Solo – That was the only good thing about Saturday, no TM. Well, that and not being last. ;)

Susan – Way to go on the 5K!

Craig - Hope you're feeling better!

I’m sure I still missed some, but I tried.

We did do our Ice Fest 5K Saturday. It was in the 20s and breezy, but not too bad. The slush and the hills got me, but at least we weren’t last. I’ll try to post pics soon!

OMG. I almost forgot. DH was searching for local races this weekend. He found a marathon near his home town. Yeah, he was excited until he read the course. It's a 5K out adn back course that you repeat 8 times! :scared1:

:scared1: I forgot Krista! Congrats on the shuffle! WHat's up with teh lack of posting competition from you lately? ;)

I made it to the gym at lunch and did 30 on the cross trainer. My legs feel good now. My tummy is also feeling better, but still have the headache.

I still need to send in my registration for the 1/2 marathon that I say I am doing. So I guess I am not "really" doing it until I commit to it. Not sure what is holding me back, I guess the fear of commitment.

Carrie - I forgot to mention... when I was running on my home TM on Saturday I had an accident. My DD3 was shooting baskets with her little indoor hoop and told me to watch... DON'T DO WHAT I DID!!!! I of course turned to watch her, stepped too far to the side and kerplunk..... Huge loud noise as I tried to remain standing. Thankfully I was able to grab onto sometime so I didn't totally wipe it, but I did a 180 from the TM to the floor. I instantly thought of you, and then was so embarrassed I vowed never to tell anyone. Well, I was so loud that DH heard me upstairs and came running... I got back on the thing tho!!!! Our home TM is more narrow than the gym ones are, there's no room for error!

Oh no Jen! SO glad you're safe!

:scared1: I forgot Krista! Congrats on the shuffle! WHat's up with teh lack of posting competition from you lately? ;)

It's called I have unreliable co-workers who can't come to work so then I have to bust my butt to their job AND mine. I promise, I will try to do better!!!!! :cutie: :cutie: :cutie:

Oh Krista - I have that problem a lot too. Glad you could check in with us. Today since we are down almost half staff, I told someone to stay in the office until I got back from lunch. Other wise there was no way I would get a workout in (I didn't tell him that tho).

Carrie - I am safe, just feel like a clod. Did I ever mention that my nickname used to be Grace. Yup, I am a klutz!

WTG on getting that WO in! BUT OUT OF CONTROL about yout little trip up! I am so glad you are OK!:wizard:
Go ahead and sign up for the 1/2! You will do great...O wait, I haven't signed up either!:rotfl: Need to get DH, BIL, sis, and any other crazy person to commit with me!

Melissa

I'm really impressed that you 2 toughed it out in such difficult condidtions. Congratulations, and use some of that ice from the course on your knee.

Jim

Good work yesterday, 1 minute per mile improvement is something to feel good about. Don't feel too bad about your son beating you half time for the full. Remember that youth is wasted on the young.

Christa

My solution for you is to run with people slower than you, people like me. You'd feel like Steve Prefontaine or Lynn Jennings if you were out with me. Anyone who goes sub-3 in a marathon is the real deal. Training with someone like that must be good for your fitness but bad for your self-image.

I must admit hearing you talk about running partners is great, but makes me feel pitiful. In long ago years I had some really great running buddies, but I've not had that luxury in many years. I suppose the answer is to quite feeling sorry for myself and actively look for a running group. I know there are many in the area, I just need to find a group that trains between 9:30 and 10:30 per mile depending on distance.

Krista and Steve

Be sure not to end up on the DL before the pig. When is the race anyway?

Best to all

Craig

Angie – WOOHOO!! :cool1: Way to go! Congrats on the awesome time! Happy Anniversary, too!

Ashley – 9 miles on the TM? That definitely calls for some entertainment! Thanks for the book recommendation – sounds like something I’d like to read.

Christa – Glad to hear that you’re feeling better!

Jackie – Hey, one mile with the dog is better than nothing at all! Sometimes that’s just how it happens.

Jen – Glad to hear y’all had fun at Disney on Ice. Feel better soon! Glad you’re ok after the TM spill.

Mel – Oh, what a crazy race! Congrats on finishing in those conditions! Hope your knee heals up quickly.

Jim – Congrats! You really should have gotten some photos of your fashion statement.

Carrie – Looking forward to seeing some photos! Running an out and back 8 times? Sounds pretty insane to me!

No real training news for me. I thought I'd be smart and do a step workout as xt on Friday night, and my calves have been KILLING me ever since. :sad2: I'm thinking about maybe trying to just do an easy walk tonight, but we'll see. Don't want to push it too hard and end up even more sore.

Just completed another run - 3.65 mi in 46:12, so I shaved a few seconds off my time from Saturday! I'll probably keep running this 3.65 mi route as my base route during the week, then I'll start venturing out more when my long runs have to start getting longer (and as the days start getting longer). The good news is the weather is holding up here - no signs of snow and slightly warmer temps (knock on wood), so I should be able to get some consistent training runs in.

I told my brother that I was going to sign up for a 10K on St. Patrick's Day. When I told him that the grand prize was to win your weight in beer :drinking1 he became very interested.....maybe I can recruit him for the run!:cheer2:

Hi, everyone!
Wow, all these LRs and race reports are so inspiring!
Liz -- :welcome: Your story is so inspiring! It will be great to have you here!

Matt -- awesome race, but I sure hope you are not overdoing it!

Dave -- I hope you are doing okay and that you had a great weekend.,

Angie - awesome time, and what a remarkable improvement since Disney. THat is huge! :woohoo:

Mel -- great time, sweetie, but don't aggravate your PF with going too fast.

MelR -- That race sounds brutal. I am so glad Phil was with you and able to make a recommendation to help you get to the finish. What an amazing achievement!

Jim -- great job on your race! Very nice of your son to run it in with you.

Well, I only got in 3.23 on Saturday before having to abandon the TM to drive north to meet some friends. My pace was solid but not too impressive. I am just glad to have gotten it in with the start of a migraine that has completely taken me out of commission. I spent most of yesterday in bed, though not really sleeping and was still awake at 4:08 am today in pain and coughing too. I'm at work but barely functional and not at all thrilled at the prospect of driving home. I may have to ask Howard to pick me up on his way home from class.
The one great thing that came out of the weekend was we found a Fleet Feet store up in NJ and I spent about 40 minutes with a guy who seemed very knowledgeable and determined to find a good shoe fit for me. He said my shoes I have been wearing for two years are at least 1/2 size too short, especially for longer distances with how flat footed I am and how much they elongate when I walk. He is convinced that my toes are injured because of this and that a better fitting shoe will save my feet. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet, but they are the same brand/model roadrunnersports recommended but I think I ordered them a size too small. I think these are a 9.5!!! And I usually wear an 8.5. But these seem to really complement the shape of my foot. I can't wait until I feel well enough to try them out. Hopefully, by tomorrow night.

Angie - I'm inspired by your committment to run! I can't believe how good your time is and to think you haven't been at it very long. If you don't mind my asking ~ did you follow a particular training method or book? If so, please let me know.

I was at Borders yesterday, and they have so many books to choose from that it became overwhelming :confused3 I would love a recommendation. Currently, I'm a walker, but I would love to start running/jogging.

Any suggestions?

Maggie - It great to hear there's another Chicago area person on this board. Because the temps warmed up a bit, I went for a walk today. By the time I got my Ipod, headband, gloves, clothing layers, outwear, socks, shoes and sunglasses on, I felt like I was carrying an additional 5 pounds of weight. At least today I could walk in daylight and the streets are finally cleared off. Today, I took Fairbanks (our Siberian Huskey) with me. She loves this weather and she keeps me moving at a good pace.

Mel - Love the 'gear'. But can I have a pair? One for each foot please! :lmao:

CAm - :scared1: Have you been wearing your normal shoe size or is an 8.5 your normal running shoe size? No wonder your toes were so bad! Hope teh new ones work wonders for you!

DreamBeliever - Many of us use the program in Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham (the Penguin) and Coach Jenny Hatfield. Jeff Galloway is also quite popular. SOme use Hal Higdon too, but he's a bit advanced for me.

TXAng - definitely don't push too hard. Sorry abuot teh calves!

cdn_gal - Way to go on teh pace!

My regular shoe size is 8 or 8.5 and the running shoes I've been wearing are 8.5 wide. They "seemed" comfortable because the toe box was nice and wide, so no crunching. Robert (the guy who fit me on Saturday) was really unhappy that my foot was up against the front. And I had been fitted for these at a new balance store, so I didn't have any reason to believe they weren't the right size. He seemed surprised that I'd actually been "fitted" for these. He was sooo nice, and even when I found a pair that seemed to work, he kept trying others because he wanted me to have somethign to compare them to and some choices. I really, really hope these work when actually put to the test. I just feel so hopeless because I have tried so many pairs and many of them were "fitted" at Delaware Running Company, a really good running store. I do think, though, that as I get more confident in portraying myself as someone who wants to 'run' I have the confidence to assert that I want a great running shoe and that not just anything will do. It also helped that this guy was more like my age and not one of these young college track stars who are winning all the local endurance events and with whom I'm usually too self-conscious to assert myself, KWIM?
