Wk of Dec 17--WISH Walking/Running Club

Good morning everyone. Happy Monday!! I am feeling a little better about my lr fiasco, if I had to walk because I was tired, I think I would have been okay with that, but the fact that I had to walk due to a re-occurring injury upsets me. My biggest fear for the marathon is an injury right before the start and when my IT band started hurting not even half way thru the run, it felt like nightmare coming true. I know I sound over the top and I hate be such a drama princess:, but that's how I felt on Saturday. After thinking about it on Sunday, I feel better about it. I've been icing it and I'm going to rest it until tomorrow, the plan this week is to do the elliptical in place of running and then the bike for cross training. I don't think I'm going to do my lr on Saturday, but I'm going to do the elliptical instead. I'd like to cross train the rest of the taper and not even attempt to run until the marathon. What do you think? Do you think I'll be okay? I don't think I will lose fitness or muscle tone since I'll be cross training, but will not running for 3 weeks be bad on marathon morning?

Sunny-- :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: get better soon!!!

Christa--Thanks for the link, I'm definitely going to check that out. Sorry about the Panthers, well not that sorry!! :teeth: Hope you stay healthy :wizard: and more :wizard: :wizard: for your knee.

Jodi--That stinks about your friend! I hope she is able to come to a decision soon. I'm not sure how equal the elliptical is to running, I'm going to search around and see if I can find an answer. I do know that roughly 5 miles of biking is equal to roughly 1 mile of running.

Kevin - See 2nd comment on your Dec 15 post. ;) :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Another close one, though. Had me pretty worried. Good luck on your run today! Going away for the holidays?

Cam - I didn't think about your cold until yesterday. That's just too much for a person's body. You already did 20. You will be fine!

Krista - :wizard: :wizard: RICE, with a big emphais on teh R. :grouphug: :grouphug:

Heather - I don't trust your dream results, as I know you will be ok!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :grouphug:

Sunny - Brown in the lungs is BAD. Must get antibiotics soon!!! :wizard: :grouphug:

Howard - Glad to see you fianlly got some trainign time in! :wizard:

Mel - Only 8 minutes faster????? Sounds great to me.

jodi - Hope that shot works!! BTW, many of us just did one 20-miler. You will be fine!

Sorry, I missed a bunch. No time to take notes today. :guilty:

Well, we did it. No great cheers of joy and it was slower than last year, but we did it. It was still a but cold (boy do I feel like a whimp after wha we ran in last year). Plus brainiac dh decided to start on a road with slope where we have to go on the shoulder, as he did not think the bike path would take us far enough. I should have put a a bigger fight. :guilty:

I was feeling things (not really hurting) at about 2 miles. Did ok, though and when I got back to bike path, things got better. The run seemed to go forever. I am doubting whether I can break 5 hours now, but hoping this taper will help the legs out a lot. Tryong to figure out how to pace myself for the race. DH still thinks we did not burn ourselves out last year, btu we were way fast. he says, "Make hay while the sun shines." While it makes some sense, as we do better when it's cooler, everything says notto start too fast. I think we started slow for our 20-miler last year and I know we felt greeat at the end of that one. Hoefully, that will give me back up to plead my case for a slower start. We'll see. My only bright side is that last year we rocked our 20-miler adn when I got to the 20 mile mark race day, it scared me that I did not feel as good as then. This year, I shouldn't have that problem.

OK, taperville, here we come!! BTW, we are sticking to TMs f SRs to help us stay on the healing path. I don't feel too bad today, so hopefully, that's a good sign.

Hi, everyone! I really appreciate all the encouraging words and am sorry I didn't get back here to post before this.

Sunny -- I am so sorry you have the flu. Take care of yourself and don't even think about the Goofy right now. Just focus on getting yourself healthy. pixiedust:

To everyone who had a stonker run this weekend or just something shorter than they wanted -- sending :goodvibes: and pixiedust: that we can all put it behind us and enjoy the taper.

To everyone who had great runs this weekend -- :woohoo: I must admit, I am particularly proud to know my race partner had a great LR! Go, Rhonda! :thumbsup2 You rock, girl! I had no doubt that nothing could stop you!

I have to say -- Jen, I can't imagine doing that many laps! Amazing! Dave, the improvement since 12/2 is absolutely awesome. That must be so reassuring to you!

I hope all my WISH buddies are enjoying the holiday preparations. I am trying to convince myself that the next week does not represent time I'd rather spend training, but time that I am truly going to enjoy with family and friends. This was a weekend of errands and wrapping presents for us, but I think we are just about done and in pretty good shape. I want to do some baking this week and am preparing a lasagna luncheon for my office for Friday, so that will keep me busy. I am hoping to get lots of sleep, too. Howard and I saw "Pursuit of Happyness" Saturday night -- WOW! Awesome movie!

Right now, I am really fighting this cold and am trying everything -- coldeeze is the latest purchase in the hopes of getting over this. I have so much congestion in my chest that it hurts to take a deep breath. Not sure how this will impact on the pulmonary stress test I have this Wednesday. The bad thing is Howard is suffering this horrendous cold too. We just have to be careful not to share it back and forth, but how can I resist him? Hoping to feel better by the time we go out to celebrate our 22nd anniversary on Friday. (where is that fingers-crossed smilie?)

Now, on to what is really on my mind. Saturday's 15 mile version of the 20 mile LR has taught me alot. In fact, I've obsessed enough about it that I have to have learned something. First of all, I am furious at myself for not pushing for another stinking 5 miles so that I wouldn't have had to face these feelings of failure. It might have been painful, but the knowledge that I couldn't -- or didn't -- push through has been with me every waking moment since then. I alternate between feelings of insecurity resulting from not having done it, and feelings of absolute determination about what is going to happen on January 7. No way am I going to allow myself to be in this position again -- regret, disappointment, etc. UGH! No matter what happens on 1/7, I plan on coming home with a Mickey medal.

All that being said, my right foot hurts badly enough today that I stopped on the way to work and bought an instant ice pack and a regular one that I put in the freezer. I have no idea what this pain is or the cause. It runs along the top inside of my foot from the instep to the ankle and the pain radiates down to the arch. No way would I be able to walk even a mile today if I had to. Whatever that hard "cord" thing is that runs the top of your foot on the arch side seems to be the "center" of the pain. I am going to ice it today and hope to have a pain-free workout tomorrow morning.

Well, I have been working on this post off and on for over an hour with many interruptions. Not sure it makes much sense by now. I hope everyone has a wonderful day and I'll try to get back later. :grouphug:

Good morning Team!

I must start this week by apologizing to Carrie, and everyone else who told me not to do it.

Saturday my L/R went like this:

Mile 1: 14:23
Mile 2: 12:55
Mile 3: 12:04
Mile 4: 11:46
Mile 5: 12:34
Mile 6: 11:47
Mile 7: 14:05
Mile 8: 12:54
Mile 9: 12:41
Mile 10: 14:22
Mile 11: 12:30
Mile 12: 13:16
Mile 13: 12:47

2 hours 49 minutes and 25 seconds!

13.10 miles! (I stopped my Garmin right there!)

Whooo hooo!

I have to say, it felt really really good! :thumbsup2 I know I started off too fast and tried to force myself to slow down. Miles 7 & 10 I made myself walk, but even then after a while started back up to a slow jog.

I also have to say...my knee did not hurt at all! :woohoo:

And now...for the bad news....

And where's Carrie to say "I told you so".

Although I'm not exactly sure when this happened, but my left ankle hurts, just on the outside. It's a little swollen, so I iced it and I'm going to see Dr Hunka - Hunka - Burning Love today. I did trip over a stupid rock in the paddock on Saturday but didn't think anything of it. Then we went to the mall and I walked around for quite some time. But on Sunday morning it started to really hurt and by last night I could hardly stand on it. It is actually much much better today. At no point though was the pain bad enough that I would not have raced if it was tomorrow. However...for the first time...and this makes me really sad....I missed a day of training. I was so proud that I had not missed a singe day since I started MfM. Nuts.

But since now I can say I HAVE DONE 13.1 MILES....I guess missing one day of training is OK.

A couple of other observations......And it kills me to say this...but my Kayanos may not be enough for me. Since I am so heavy I think for that distance I need a more substantial shoe. Around Mile 9 I started to feel like I was running in slippers, and not in a good way. So I am torn at this point as to what to do. I have to give that some thought. :confused3

I think 13 miles is a great distance for me. It was a challenge, but not out of the question. It was tough towards the end, but well, and I can't believe I am saying this...not all that bad. Of course I was just plugging along, not really racing or anything. But I liked it. :goodvibes A lot. :teeth:

I also realize I was not dodging people and dealing with a crowd so I am glad to have that 40 minute cushion to do that.

I don't know what my husband thinks anymore. He saw me walking into the bathroom with a huge bowl of ice. I told him I was taking an ice bath. (HE HATES the cold!) However, I was not stiff or sore at all, so there!

So, all in all, I guess I'm ready!

Carrie - I couldn't help it. I really couldn't. We went to Charlie's company holiday party on Friday night and the coat check guy gave me my ticket.....#13. It was a sign I tell ya! A SIGN! :teeth:

Cam - Oh Cam...I'm sorry about Saturday. But you know - and we sure all know - you are ready for this! Oh no, now I see you have pain in your foot. Oh I hope it goes away with your icing. Listen, my appointment with Dr Handsome isn't until 12:30? Why dont you come with me? :goodvibes

Dave - YAY for your last L/R. :woohoo: You are SO ready!
CONGRATULATIONS Kevin!!! WTG Lakers! Div II National Football Champions!!!
OK, I don't know sports, but don't the Lakers play basketball?? :confused3

Sara - You ARE really consistent. :thumbsup2 I was all over the board with my times. But hey, I'm just trying to stay ahead of the sweepers! I don't care about anything else.

Sunny - Noooooooooooooooooooo! :guilty: No! no! no! Oh Sunny.... :wizard:

One more thing then I better get to work. Charlie bought a pair of Pearl Izumi tights. I am totally lime green with jealousy. I hope Santa brings me a pair. Holy cow they are nice!

Cam - You were right not to push through that Satruday. Being sick, 4 hours of sleep, holiday running, not a good mix. You will do it when it counts, though! Rest that foot.

Judy - i'd love to give you some advice about missing this run, but you don't really listen to me anyway. ;) ;) Seriously, I woul dnto say I told you so after someone gets hurt. :grouphug: (I still haven't told dh I told you so when I asked him if we should tie down our Xmas tree better a few years ago. Yup, lost a lot of treasured ornamanets in teh fall :( , but I never said a word to him.) Taking a day off is what your body needs. Whther or not your LR hurt your ankle, it sure didn't help it. If it hurts at all when you try to run again, do not run on it! Your body needs this time to heel and you are way more apt to do too much instead of too little. :wizard: :wizard: BTW, yes, the lakers are a pro b-ball team. We are talking college level in Kevin's case, though. ;)

Ohhhh you must all be getting soooo excited :grouphug:

I am thinking about you all and wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Judy, that is SO great! That is what doing these races is all about! :thumbsup2

Carrie, yes, it is a delicate balance on deciding the speed to start a race. I have done both, started out slow and then wondered if I left something out on the course after I crossed the finish line and started out too fast and was dragging at the end. Funny, in both cases, my times were pretty much the same. :confused3 I certainly felt better taking it slow at the beginning.

Cam, you and Rhonda will do great in the marathon. You are so lucky you have each other. :grouphug:

Krista, I am so glad you are feeling better this morning. Just get lots of rest in the next 3 weeks, ice, stretch and you should be good to go! :thumbsup2

Jodi, sorry I don't have any advice on your friend. That is a hard one. I think it is a decision only she can make. :wizard: for your ailments.

Matt, Dave, Kelley and everyone else, good job getting in your mileage!

Sunny, :wizard: Oh, I hope you kick that virus in the butt! Yes brown gunk in lungs = not good.

Stephanie, sorry about your bad run Saturday. I too am nursing sick kids this week. DS has been sick with the stomach flu since Friday. He is still not back to school today.

I AM FINISHED!!!

Well, I did it. Ran 10 miles, nice and easy, on Saturday and then I was up at 4:15 Sunday morning to get my 20 miles. I felt pretty good after 10 miles, started to feel fatigued after 13, and miles 16-20 were painful. It took me 3:47 to run/walk my 20. Which, coincidentally, was the exact time it took me to run the 20 before Chicago in October! Thankfully I have 3 weeks to repair, restore, recover!! :Pinkbounc

Colleen

Coleen - Congratulations! Goofy, here you come!!!

I went to last year's thread to see if I had posted splits there after my 20-miler. I didn't. However, reliving the excitement from last year was a huge boost. I higly recommend it!

Let the taper begin - yay!!

For those who can't find a Target WISH ornament, let me know. I picked up a couple of extras for this very reason and may even be able to find a couple more if necessary. They are so cute and only cost $3. So, let me know if you need one and I can either mail it to you now or bring it in January.

Best wishes to you all - healing for those who need it and pixie dust to those with LRs still to do!!

Whoa! I missed this!!! What is it? Where in the holiday area is this found?

Thanks!!!!

Hi everyone!

I just got back from my WDW trip last night. I had a really good time and I got in 2 runs with a friend while there. We did the short run at Pop Century and the long run (10-miler) in the Boardwalk area.

Craig - Oh, how I wish I had Internet access so that I could have read your post about where to run. I only had access the night I posted so I missed your great suggestion. We ran around the lake area several times and took off on a few side paths. That 2.33 mile route would have been great. I'll have to keep that in mind for next time. :)

I will say, while at the Boardwalk area, we saw quite a few runners and walkers.....and some that were on the heavy side like me. It's good to see all shapes and sizes trying to be healthy. :thumbsup2 I always thought that running was for slim people only and that's one of the reasons I never thought about doing this before.

Jodi, Krista and others with injuries - no words of advice but offering :wizard: and :grouphug: .

Sunny - more :wizard: and well wishes for you. :grouphug: Hoping for the best!

Kim - your time is coming - it won't be long. :teeth:

Judy - :wizard: for you and Mist. I'm praying for a successful outcome.

Mel - I think you asked if I saw a possible location for group photo at the Pop. Honestly, I didn't even think to look. However, I think as others have mentioned, there seems to be several places that could be possibilities.

For all of you with great LR's - :thumbsup2

For all of you with not-so-great long runs - :cheer2: Hang in there! "Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory." - Mahatma Gandhi

For my long run at WDW, as mentioned earlier, I had an average pace of 14:46. I consider that good since I'm just a beginner, we took a bathroom break, we went back to the car for stretching and a gatorade break, and a few water fountain stops. So, with these breaks I think the overall time turned out well. :thumbsup2

Here's another quote that I like, and - it seems to fit my training efforts:

"When I did this three years ago, it was like death. When I did it last year, it was like near death. This year, it was just really hard." - John Howie, wheelchair athlete, describing his Charlotte Observer 10k races from 1990 - 1993.

I'm just back from Dr Hunka-Hunka Burning Love and he said I just have tendonitis! YAY! :cool1:

What is it about this sport that makes a person react like that? I was so HAPPY to hear it was JUST tendonitis, instead of a stress fracture. I was positively floating out of his office. All the poor mierable-looking people in casts on crutches must have thought I was a lunatic or something.

:rotfl:

Anyway, good. A bump in the road, not a stop sign.

I love it!!!! Congratulations on a great time!!!!

Kim - What susie said. You will be here befoer oyu know it next year and wonder where the year (and you sanity) went. :teeth:

judy - :cheer2: Glasd it wasn't worst case. You still need to take care care of that though. You do not want to make it worse at this point. Please take care of yourself and take it easy this week. :grouphug:

Good news Judy! Here's some extra PD to everyone for a quick recovery before January :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

No training for me today. Maybe tomorrow. :surfweb:

Thanks, Colleen, and YAY!!!! Congratulations on your last long B2B LRs! :cool1:

Judy -- SOOOOO glad it's "just tendonitis" -- now take care of it so it doesnt' get worse! :goodvibes:

Susie -- Congratulations on being so disciplined that you trained at WDW! I bet you felt so proud of yourself and very accomplished. YAY!! :woohoo: And I love that quote. Thank you for sharing it!

Hi, Heather! I hope your family is having a wonderful time getting ready for the holidays!

Kim -- Can't wait to share the WISH team experience with you at Marathon Weekend 2008! Just think -- it's not that far off anymore. I remember last year's race like it was yesterday, so this year has really flown!

Cam - How are you feeling today? I hope you are feeling better. :flower3: I thought of you often on my L/R on Saturday. I was thinking of how much I have accomplished and how amazed I am about all I've done - and all I'm about to do, and I was thinking about how grateful I am for you bringing me here and getting me started. I really owe you so much. :goodvibes You don't know what a difference you've made.

Hi WISH Team!

I'm in a rush but want to say:
Sunny, PD to you. Get well, rest.

Cam, stay off the foot. XT from here out. RICE!

Me too, XT--knee is still bugging me. I am going take myself over those finish lines! I'm looking for swogging. Trying to get to the gym now. I'd rather be outside though.

Kim, thanks for your support. You keep on with your steps and building that base. Your time will be here soon. Learn from this part too.

Judy, Yay! for ONLY ...itis. Take it easy. XT with the rest of us.

I'm thinking that many here are going into the event as XT from here out. We'll do it!

:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

I am already missing that I am not taking the steps. All that I have read says to back off, so I am giving it a go.

It is more difficult than I would ever have imagined. Sheesh!

For Diane (and anyone else who is interested) - the Target WISH ornament is a wooden ornament that spells out WISH in letters about 1.5" high. It is painted with glittery paint so it is sparkly lime green! They are sold in the ornament section of Target and are about $3. When they originally came out they were very easy to find but the last couple of weeks they have disappeared from our stores.

Like I said before, I have a couple of extras so for those who wanted them but can't find them let me know!

Well, I started out my first day of vacation with a trip to the pod. Got impressions done for my orthotics...he cut me a deal since I was whining about the price from the other podiatrist. And he's rushing the order so that I'll have them before the half. He's recommended soft orthotics and says they don't take as long to break-in. He feels I really don't have a choice if I want to keep running...in his words, my feet aren't built for shock absorbtion. I have really high arches and my foot's narrow so all the bones squish together :confused3 And now there's tape on my foot again.
So is running with tape like running with scissors? He didn't tell me I couldn't run with tape on my foot... :rolleyes1

Congrats to everyone on their LR...good, bad or ugly. It's all downhill from here!

Kim...you'll be enjoying your own taper madness this time next year!

Sunny, Cam...anyone else nursing bad bugs :wizard: :wizard:

Krista... :wizard: some PD for your IT

Finished up the Xmas shopping today. Got the wild todd her first two-wheeler (with training wheels). DD13 picked this out for the back...hope it's not a self-fulfilling prophecy...
