Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Morning teammates--I feel like a sorry training partner. I chose sleeping in this morning over getting out for my LR. But baby, it's COLD outside--30 degrees, feels like 20. Now for most of you northerners, that's balmy--but this southern girl would freeze! Good thing it was a step back weekend ( I really stepped it back! )

I'd like to propose a WISH team meet for LR next Dec where it's not 3000% humidity or 300 feet of snow. How's the weather in NC or GA? I checked the weather before I went out yesterday morning at 5:30 am...73 with 93% humidity  That's just wrong on so many levels :sad2: You know I never would've given it a second thought until after this year's marathon and then what happened at the Chicago marathon.
I had switched my 20 to this weekend since I need to be able to walk next weekend. I decided to go easy but I still started feeling a bit slimy by 1.5 miles. I was totally (literally) soaked by mile 10...the hardest part of my bathroom break was pulling those wet shorts back on :scared1: I made it through 12.5 doing intervals, but crashed and walked the rest of the way. So, it's over, it's done...20 miles in the books! I finished in 4:49:36 which gives me 2 hours and some change to do the last 10K. I think that's doable :thumbsup2 . I'm hoping for some better weather on race weekend so I can keep up my intervals longer.
I have so much respect for you guys doing your LR on the TM or indoor tracks :worship: . It would be waaaay too easy to stop when you get tired.

Lisa...the skirt sounds great! Did you find a place to stay for marathon weekend? You can easily walk to SSR from the Grosvenor to catch the marathon buses. We used to stay there a lot.

Shan...:wizard: to keep your family healthy.

Suzy...good to 'see' you. How's your back doing?

Howard...welcome back! Congrats on your successful semester! Good luck with your Goofy training.

AB...congrats on your 8 miler! Good luck with that weather! I have tried Mizuno (I think I had the Elixir) and like them. I have narrow feet and they fit well (NB are too wide for me). I went back to the ASICs Nimbus for more cushioning.

Kathy...I can't even imagine 7.5 degrees. :cold: How are your shoulder and foot doing?

Lynne...congrats on the peds residency in HI! Sounds like a good time for a WISH team roadtrip!

Angie...great to see you! How did your workout go?

Martha...glad that your leg is better!

Jackie...are you still doing the Galloway program? I just read his old book (1984) version. Do they still recommend 26 as your LR before a full?

Duane...I'm glad you said that...no run is easy right now. I think I just go out and expect to breeze through these runs. Seems a bit unrealistic at this stage :)

I did notice that 20 wasn't as painful as 18 so I'm hoping that's a good sign for my conditioning. I haven't been able to walk well since the run, but I haven't needed buckets of ibuprofen just for resting like I did after 18. I've been having some impure thoughts about registering for the Sarasota half :rolleyes1. The full training has really helped my half time and I've done Sarasota since it's inception...

Good training week everyone...we're almost there!

Mel: :goodvibes Way to plow through the 20 and I'm with you...I think we need a Dis Meet for one of the LRs. They are so brutal..esp to all of us out here training alone. I'm really not looking forward to next weekend lol!

Angie: Welcome back and best of luck with your recovery. Amazing to me that you are working out though!!! Wow!!! :thumbsup2

Hey everybody--well life has completely taken over, and I haven't really been able to keep up with the posts since I got back from my WDW trip.

WDW was great! It was so weird being around the parks and thinking.."the marathon course goes here"....it really started to sink in that I am really doing this! YIKES! :scared1:

Now for the bad news---my knee is really bothering me. I think it is my IT band. Yesterday I went out for my 12 mile LR and it was bothering me A LOT. I was able to finish the distance alternating a little bit of jogging with walking towards the end. So, I did some research last night, and I think that is what it is. Now I need help from all of you experts!!! What should I do...I really think I need to back off and rest a bit so I can make it through the marathon. But I am afraid I won't be ready.

Any advice out there???

Cam - Way to go on the 20 miles and your timing is awesome!

Hockey Girl - I have problems with my IT as well. Infact my entire left leg is messed up, lol, I do alot of stretching before and after my walks.

This week our temperature has been 10-15 below zero so I've put off my snowshoe walks because I know I'll just freeze to death on the trail and they won't find my chubby body til spring! I'm hoping to get out there next week?

I can't believe that the marathon is just around the corner:scared1: Is anyone hitting the parks on Friday, if so which one?

Have a wonderful Sunday!:santa:

Hey everyone!

It's been a while since I've posted on this thread. It's been so hard for me to keep up lately. Darn school gets in the way. :rolleyes1 Sending :wizard: for those nursing injuries, illnessses or other. :grouphug:

Speaking of injuries, my back went out a few weeks ago and all I did was get out of a chair. How pathetic is that? Looking back, I'm sure it was due to something else ??? but I'm not sure what. I had to forgo my 18-miler and other training for a few days. I've slowly got back on track and just trying to train to finish.

Mel - is there another Suzy with back problems? It must be something with our name. Hmmmm. Good going on the 20 miles in that heat and humidity. Whew! Let's hope that Florida starts getting cooler and pronto! I've put in a request for a 48 degree start and 55 degree ending for us 7 hour folks for the full. :thumbsup2

Also, I think a DIS meet for the LR is a wonderful idea. We could even plant support along the way....water, food. Maybe some family members could help out. My DH would probably be willing. Oh, well, just a thought. THat may not be what you had in mind. ;)

Stephanie - it is cold here. Brrrrr. I'm going to try to do 8 miles later today...when it warms up a bit. Ha!

Laurie- no advice here but some :wizard: for your knee. You might want to get it check out by a professional to be sure.

I'm going to try to find last week's thread so I can get caught up on everyone. Hope you all have a safe and injury-free training week! :goodvibes

Well my LW for this weekend has been cancelled. We are buried with snow. I had to dig out the back door to let the dogs out this morning and our corgi is drowning in the snow (need to dig out paths for her). Susan's poor Jack russells must be resorting to tunneling thru.

On the upside I am almost looking forward to shoveling like I have never before! All this marathon conditioning makes me eager to see how well those weights have paid off LOL But I do plan on taking it somewhat easy, even though we have a somewhat small area to shovel I don't want to throw my back out this close to the race.

Speaking of shoveling out and wondering where my fellow Michiganer is.... Where oh where in the world is Carrie???? I haven't noticed her name in a while.

Mel excellent job on the distance and time!!! Isn't it amazing how we adapt? I remember susan and i requiring tons of motrin following 6 miles :lmao: Way to go!!!! And I too am in agreement with the December Long Distance Day meet up somewhere perfect weather wise ;)

My latest milestone is I managed to run 1.5 miles this past Friday in just under 21 minutes. I had it set at a 13:38 min/mile. Took a walking breaking and managed to run again for 5 minutes at a 12:30 min/mile. I'm telling you Susie's friend Cindy said something right that just clicked in my brain and it seems the 'wall' in my running is tumbling down. :cool1:

Oh and Mel... seeing that temp report for 5:30 am is scary!!! I say we all spend some time this afternoon doing the 'cooler temp and lower humidty' dance LOL I'm sure WWDave knows how, he knows all the YARC moves. :teacher:

Happy training & Pixie Dust thoughts for those recovering from colds & injuries!!!

PatsBill...we're coming to your house to watch the Pats play. We have no TV coverage for any of the snow games today. Nothing better than watching a snow game, though that last Steelers-Dolphins rain game was pretty spectacular!

Weather is better for us today due to that cold front Vic mentioned. We'll have 40s tonight, but it's going to blowoff fast. Right now's forecast for next weekend is back to a high of 80. We'll all just have to keep our fingers crossed for marathon weekend. I feel bad for you guys coming down a week or so ahead of time. It's hard to know what to prepare for as weird as our weather is.

Now for the bad news---my knee is really bothering me. I think it is my IT band. Yesterday I went out for my 12 mile LR and it was bothering me A LOT. How far have you gone up?
You should only have 1 more LongLR left for this coming up weekend (maybe 20 or something like that?)....I would rest my knee/ice and all the other things...if you think it is the IT...stretch and use the rolling thing on it...or a water bottle. If it feels good, do the LR...if it starts to bother you, though, quit...you should be getting ready to start the taper and then the miles won't be as long...I may be wrong about your training though.
It is better to show up not hurt than to try and run through it and not be able to run at all.

Not sure what everyone else thinks but that is what I would do.

Hello WISH team

Got out there yesterday in the pouring rain (SHOCKER for us Atlanta area folks...we were beginning to think someone put a big dome over the area) and completed my 8 miler in a respectable 70:19 (8:47 pace). I was totally soaked a quarter mile into it and I think I ended up wetter than humanly possible...I do have to say it was kind of fun splashing through some puddles and getting my super white shoes a little muddy :)

Now I'm just preparing for the highest mileage week of my training, culminating in next weekend's 18 mile run. Decided that 18 was enough this year, especially with the added half distance runs the day before...who came up with this Goofy idea anyway? LOL

Hope everyone had great LR's this weekend...that the Xmas shopping is coming along good...and that the upcoming week is a healthy one!

Running Partner Amy - AWESOME JOB on the 8 miler!! Let's hope we have that kind of running karma at WDW :) Wish I had better input on the shoe deal...I'm just thankful that the 2130's are a tremendous improvement over the 2120's (and they come in black...yay!)

Laurie - Best of luck with the IT band. IMO it's better to get to the start line totally healthy than to try and push yourself into possible further injury by doing that 20 miler. Try to take care of yourself and don't worry, you've put plenty of miles in to make it across that finish line :)

Shan - Hope your DH is feeling better...did you put him on quarantine in the house?? LOL I'm sure today's plummet into the cold temps isn't gonna help any.

Cecelia - How'd your LR go this weekend? Did you choose rain or cold and windy??

Christa - Thanks for the links to the Tricharlotte reviews of the Kentucky Derby Marathon...I'm gonna follow my buddy Amy there I believe (as long as we can take advantage of the horse racing that night!!)

Stacie - How are you holding up?? Are the chiro visits helping any? Hoping you'll be able to get back out there soon...you are still gonna rock that 5k!

Angie - Awesome that you are working out already. As a fellow back injury sufferer I have an idea of what you went through...just wanted to wish you the best of luck :)

Good afternoon WISHers! Hoping everyone is having a great Sunday.

Man, what a difference a day makes. The cold front pushed through last night and dropped temperatures quite a bit. 48 degrees this morning and it’s supposed to be in the 30s tomorrow morning.

Ventured out around 0700 for 16. I figured since my 18 miler was a stonker, I’d add 2 miles to today’s run. Turned out to be a pretty good day. Besides the wind, the weather was perfect, and I finished in 3:30 hours.

I believe I may have found my shoe/sock combo as my feet didn’t bother me much towards the end of the run. We’ll see next week. They’re aching like big dogs right now though. Thank goodness for Ibuprofen.

Mel – Sorry the weather didn’t cooperate yesterday. Yesterday we had the AC on, today the furnace. I wish it would make up it’s mind.

Laurie – Take care of that knee.

Susie – Take care of that back.

Diane – Take it easy with the XT today. I don’t miss shoveling snow. Not one bit. WTG with the 1.5 miler!

Scott – WTG with the 8 miler!

It took me about an hour! I have a very short drive too! In some areas actually MOST areas it was 10+ inches thanks to blowing and drifting.

I'm feeling ok, tired as you can imagine and planning my 2008 winter revolving visit schedule with all the warm weather WISH members ;)

DH has been out of town for the weekend, lucky him. He's going to come home tomorrow and find home listings for place farther south ;) if i had any strength left in my arms i'd start packing and great him with moving boxes :rotfl:

Yes, moving snow definitely is XT LOL I feel better now since I missed my LW this weekend. At least I managed to get in some form of XT in. :)

I need a winter place in a warmer clime to train in ;) Stay healthy and warm all!!!

Adopted as the official state bird on April 14, 1939, the Blue Hen Chicken had long been used as a motif in numerous political campaigns and in many publications.

During the Revolutionary War, the men of Captain Jonathan Caldwell's company, recruited in Kent County (DE), took with them game chickens that were said to be of the brood of a famous Blue Hen and were noted for their fighting ability.

When not fighting the enemy, the officers and men amused themselves by pitting their Blue Hen chickens in cockfights. The fame of these cockfights spread throughout the army and when in battle, the Delaware men fought so valiantly that they were compared to these fighting cocks.

Hi everyone!

Hope training is going well for all. We had a storm today (though no snow). It's been raining since last night, although it has almost stopped now. The wind was howling like crazy during the night. Even woke me up around 4:30AM. My planned 12 miles got interrupted when I got company today. My niece is home from Hawaii/Calif. and decided to drop in for a visit. So, my alternate plan is to xt today. I'm gonna pop a dvd in tonight after the football game and ride my spinner until the movie is over. Should be about about 2 hours. Will try to get the run in tomorrow, but they're now saying snow is headed our way :scared1:

Stephanie - I feel like a slug in my training, too. Too many interruptions and distractions.

Mel - 93% humidity?! That conjures up ugly memories of WDW Marathon07  Great job on your 20 miles!

Laurie - I hope your leg feels better. Don't push it too hard. You don't want to make it worse before the race.

Terri

Mel - The "official" Galloway season has ended, but I'm still running with a group through the winter. And yes, Galloway definitely recommends doing a LR of 26 before the marathon. His theory has always been that you hit the wall at whatever longest distance you've run in training. Obviously, this is my first time, so I'm no expert, but I'm going with it!

NC is 53 and sunny today, but with 40-50mph wind. By Thursday it's supposed to be 60 and sunny. We might be a respectable place for the LR meet.

Amy - I have the Mizuno Wave Inspires, relatively new. I had a pair of Nike Air Zoom Elites that I loved the moment I put them on, but after the PF issues, we decided to try something different. I tried on 4 or 5 pairs and nothing really excited me, but these felt good and at least weren't bright orange like the Nikes! So far I don't have any complaints.

Scott - We had that same wet stuff fall from the sky yesterday. Not enough to put a dent in the drought, but at least we now know that there isn't a permanent dome over the area and the clouds know we're here!

Did my first run in 12 days today! Per the chiro's instructions, only did 4 miles. Opted for the TM since it's cold and WINDY outside. Felt good all the way through, and my foot doesn't hurt quite as much as it usually does when I'm done so I'm guessing that the ART made some difference already. Hooray! I WILL get to the finish line in 4 weeks.

The only bummer about the TM was the MP3 died during the first song. I refused to get off and turn on the stereo or TV, so I did the entire run with no music until DD came downstairs with .25 miles to go and sang "Mamma Mia" until I finished. Gotta love the support!

Jackie

Great job on the LR/LW this weekend everyone. I did 7 yesterday and felt pretty good about it until I read how far you all are going!!! You certainly inspire me. :thumbsup2

Today was my rest day and I did just that. It is 10 degrees and we have about 10 inches of snow so far.:scared1: It had started when I got up at 4:30 this morning and has been going strong all day. Right now it has let up but there is more in our future.

:wizard: To all the sick and injured, especially Shan and her DH. Hoping that the yucky stuff has stayed isolated to him alone.

I posted my report on the NB skirt on the other thread. It worked great with very minimal, what I would call normal, ride in the compression shorts. I really liked it and thanks to all who started talking about them as I would have never bought one without it. Now I want one in every color!!

Have a great day and soak up some heat for all us in the blizzard! :rolleyes1

I hate humidity. As Mel alluded to, for yesterdays run, the temperature was 73 and the humidity was 95% at 4:00 when I was getting ready. By the time I finished, the temperature was 76 with 95% humidity. I did get my 20 miles in and only started cramping around 19.5. I will blame it on the heat. I figure that it can't be much worse for the marathon and now I have a training run with these conditions.

I guess that since I asked Mother Nature for good weather for PatsBill and now he isn't coming, all bets are off for nice cool temps in January.

There seems to be ear problems going around our house right now. Lynnda started it and now Timmy has it. I am trying to avoid them but with Lynnda's church concerts it is difficult.

Steve and Krista - Sorry about the game but that's what happens when you try to snow out a Florida team.;)

Lynne and any medical types - What is the difference between a DO and an MD. Is one better than the other.

Hope everyone feels better soon. Now to catch up before kids get out from their naps.

Bill

Lynne and any medical types - What is the difference between a DO and an MD. Is one better than the other.

Scope of practice is identical in all 50 states. The theoretical difference is that a DO has more emphasis on neuromuscular medicine and historically was more anti-medicine(pills, etc back when they were primarily poisons). Realistically, in most practice environments it's virtually impossible to tell a DO from a MD. Our anatomy training is currently a bit better than most MD schools and their biochemistry is better but by the time a doctor is in practice, it really doesn't matter. BTW, I took the same licensing exams as the MD students and did just fine. There is that much overlap in the curriculums. Hope this helps.

Cross trained by shoveling the white stuff. Third time this month that I've shoveled long enough to log it. Joy. Time to ride some since I missed today's swim due to lack of desire to play on the roads.

Jackie

Jackie, I do agree on doing a longer run than 20, at least for your 1st few marathons. I went up to 24 for my 1st 3 marathons (I have done 7). I only go up to 20 now. I, however, disagree with Galloway that you hit the wall at whatever longest distance your have run in training. I think the wall is different for everyone...after mile 20, it is never "easy" but up until my last marathon, I had never met the wall. Yes, NEVER! On Dec 8th 2007, I met the wall at mile 7...yes mile 7. But that is b/c I got sick. You will be fine at WDW...it is a fun and an easy course...as marathons go...I have said this b/4 on another thread....just have fun, Isn't that why we do this?

And YES! Lets do a LR here in NC! Charlotte is great! I have many routes!:)

Amy, I do not like Mizuno's...Had a pair and they rubbed my foot. They hurt my arches, and fore foot....got another pair 1/2 a size bigger b/c I thought it would help with the rubbing. But NOT! So now I have Addias..I strike furtherup near the front of my foot so this is where I need it to be cushy..I also have hi arches.
