Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

We're getting ready to head out for Ride n Roll this morning. I've been working on Higdon's Spring Training Plan in an effort to get up to 4 days running per week. Just finished week 2 so did 3.5 miles yesterday. My ankle's a little tweaky, but the PF is silent right now so hopefully those are good signs! I just registered DD16 and myself for the Sarasota version of Muddy Buddy in May. They have a new category that's just runners so we're going to try that!

What's everyone else up to?

Good morning everyone! It is already pretty warm this morning. I may make my way to Valley Forge later for a walk, a run if I am in the shade, but otherwise, a relaxing day in store for me.

It is hot in the Northeast.

I got out early and tried to beat the heat. 13.5 miles in 1 hr 48 minutes (roughly an 8 minute mile pace). I found out that I've been running about half- 3/4 of a mile more than I thought meaning my pace has been about 15-30 seconds faster than I thought.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! Can't wait to see the CMM reports.

Jennifer

Hey WISHers,

I took my keiki out to the beach. We did the race course for the kid's triathlon, which is next weekend. DD #1 had to practice the route.

Afterwards I put in 1,000 yards swimming. Difficult when trying to recover from a cold, but at least my sinuses cleared out from the salt water. Good to being doing something, since I've missed 10 days of running now.

Went to pick up her race packet afterwards at the local bike shop.

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

I've been thinking about how to create a hot topic for this week's mixer question. Turns out, the weather cooperated with me. :lmao:

Many areas of the country experienced above average temperatures this weekend, which made many of our weekend distances uncomfortable. (I was thinking especially of how the weather affected the racers at CMM, particularly our very special WISHers). So this week's mixer topic, which starts here on the 'Ohana thread:

What are your training/racing/recovery tips and strategies for hot-weather conditions?

Feel free to tell us how you alter your routines: when you go out, what gear you use or what you wear, how you hydrate and fuel differently, how to recognize danger signs, how you keep cool and/or recover from overheating, and when you decide to shorten/quit/take it inside.

As we all know, going out in the heat can be dangerous, so please help all of us by sharing your knowledge. :thumbsup2

Well it is HOT! I don't like hot. I hate exercising in hot.
I grew up in a freaking ice rink. I'm not built for hot.

OK, grumping over. I ran (well, wogged) 3.75 miles at an 11:30 pace on Sunday - my fastest pace yet to end Week 3 of Couch to 5K. I was out the door at 8 a.m. and it was about 85 degrees here in northern Virginia. Ugh!

Mel-- a Mother/Daughter Muddy Buddy sounds like a blast!

It was way too hot yesterday. I did a practice run (more walk) of my town's 5K that will be next Sunday. It was lousy. So far the weather forecast for next Sunday is much better so I hope it goes better!

Yo Vic??? I have a NASCAR question: Is Carl Edwards really a marathon runner? How cool! I think he should get extra points for running across the finish line!

Why does Monday come so fast?

Debra-- My only hot weather tip is lots of water and 'ade.

Hi WISHers! DH and I just got home from the CMM half a couple hours ago and we had a blast. I will be taking it easy this week for sure!!

Much like Pat this is a recovery week for me from the Country Music weekend. I will be in the gym and on the bike, weather permitting of course.

Everyone stay cool and drink a lot of liquids. In this heat I would suggest a sports drink instead of just water, even if water is your normal hydrating choice.

Frank and Pat Glad you made it back! I know the weather was brutal, but I still can't wait to read your full reports.

As for me, I did 4.25 miles at 7 am to beat the heat. Did at a comfortable 7:40 pace in a total of 32 minutes. Also did an hour of kickboxing for cross training yesterday.

Best,
Jennifer

Welcome back, Frank and Pat and congrats on CMM. I heard it was awful on Saturday.

Hope you feel better, Jeff!! Here's some :wizard: for your daughter this weekend.

Good luck with your half, Jennifer! Can't wait to hear about the PR! :thumbsup2

Are you running the Pittsburgh marathon, Debra?

Warm weather running tips, get lots of liquid, definitely drink a sports drink, slow your pace, if you train with a heart moniter, watch your zones more than your pace, and try to get out either in the early morning or late evening for your runs to avoid the heat and sun.

The forecast for the Flying Pig marathon on Sunday is rain. :sad2::sad2: Please send lots of :wizard::wizard::wizard: our way!!

Goofy training starts after I recover from the Pig, don't foresee a long recovery, so should be sometime next week. :scared::scared::scared:

Krista

Hi Everyone: How's it going over here? :wave2: I'm tapering for the half in Pittsburgh next Sunday.

Mel- I'm doing the Orlando Muddy Buddy, and I can't wait. It should be a blast, and let me really be a kid. I'd like to do the Expedition Everest Challenge with my daughters some day.

Sunny- It's great to see you again. Although you may have been posting for a while, and I didn't know because I hadn't been checking the weekly thread.

Krista- Good luck with the Pig this weekend. I have such fond memories of running that race with you and Steve.

Debra- Did you see the article in yesterday's Post Gazette on the Pittsburgh Marathon? It was about one of the top women runners Cheryl Gatons. It's kind of a sad story. Anyhow, it turns out, I went to high school with her. She graduated a year ahead of me. She never ran when she was in high school. We sure could have used her on the x-country team.

Everyone back from Nashville, take it easy this week - and hydrate.

OK, I should work.

I'm amazed that I'm feeling pretty good after that hot half! I'm ready to get back in it as a matter of fact. I won't though. This week I'll probably take it kind of smooth.

It was such fun to see everyone at Country Music this weekend. I know I've missed some and am sorry I missed you.

It was hotter than hot yesterday about 90 where we were trolling. Today it is 30 plus degrees colder. Rainy. Love this spring stuff.

It's been a while since I was active on the weekly thread but I thought I'd jump in and try to keep up.

Lily - Great that you are feeling fine post CMM. It was great seeing everyone. I think your cool weather is getting here tomorrow along with some rain to wash away the yellow haze of misery from the oak trees.

Krista - Enjoy the taper week and hoping for some dry Pig weather.

Dave - Just remember that there is no mud pit at the end of the Pittsburgh half. I'd hate to see you take a header coming down the home stretch!

Jennifer - Nice job on the kick boxing even after a good run.

As for me, I resisted the urge to run today coming off the CMM over the weekend. I did 30 minutes on the bike and some weights. I'll probably shoot for an easy run tomorrow if it's not raining too hard.

Take care everyone.

Yea, sick or not, I got in a work out.

I rode 12 miles from Ala Wai beach park to the end of Kahala Avenue, and back up the Ala Wai canal. 1:10.

Then did a slow 5.11 mile run to Aloha Tower and back. Whew, that first mile was on some wobbly legs! 57:46.

Keep up the good training everyone!

Hi Dave!

Lily-- That's great that the heat didn't get you down.

Krista-- Here's to a dry Pig :thumbsup2 I hope the weather is great for you.

I am a slug. No, I am the slime that the slug leaves behind and truly never moves....

But I'm taking a spin class at lunchtime.

Hi all,

I did my last real run before the marathon this morning. I did a 30 minute tempo (~4 miles), top speed 6:57, low speed 8:15, average 7:35. I may go to kickboxing tonight too, if my friends still want to go.

Sunday's my first half and I think the nerves are starting to set in. I've been feeling stiff for no real reason.

Best,
Jennifer
