Wk of April 20 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Wow....miss two weeks and the world passes you by. You guys have been busy! I can't possibly answer all the posts I just read (eyes are still recovering!), but will throw out of few of the notables -

Vic - nice tattoo! I have been kicking around the idea of getting a second tattoo and having it deal with running. Just need to find the right design and come to the conclusion that I want another one. We will see......

Scott - love the penguin and the idea of taking him around to the various races. Good stuff.

CosiBella - Welcome and best of luck with your training!

Cam and Howard - been keeping up with the VR plans and progress. I know you both are extremely busy right now but know the payoff next January is going to be more than worth it.

As for me, I am a mere 6 days away from leaving Baghdad and beginning the trek back to the States! In many ways, like the finish line of the Mickey, I sometimes felt like this adventure was never going to end. Needless to say, my family and I are very glad that the year is coming to an end and we can get back to a more desired form of reality. Can I get a whooohooooo!!!!

Though I said I would wait until I got back to the States to run again given the conditions over here, after a 2 week break (yuck!) I couldn't it anymore and hit the perimeter road for an easy 3 miles tonight. It felt great! Not the speediest performance for me, but speed was not the intent - I just needed to get out and move the legs a little bit. I should be able to get in a couple of runs during a short stay in Kuwait on the way back. After that, it's back on my home trails of Huntsviile!

Thought you might like to see the sand storms that seem to have been the norm for the past couple of weeks.

Makes breathing pretty interesting, I can assure you.

Time to hit the hay and get ready for the 5th day prior to my departure!

Kevin -- WOOHOO!!! :woohoo: Keeping you and Kristen and the kids in my prayers and good thoughts! Geez, WISH you were running in pixiedust: instead of that brown stuff! Where is :tinker: when you need her? Sending  and :goodvibes and many, many  your way!

I'll respond here just in case anyone else happens to need the info.

For the heart rate - Based on Max is where you can set your max heartrate and it will adjust the zones for you. Custom is where you can select a heartrate for each zone. If you go into the user profile (hit mode to get to main menu then go to Settings>General>User Profile) you can change the weight by one pound and you will get the prompt again. Just choose yes and Garmin will set everything to the normal averages.

Interval training - There are different options that you can choose and I think they have do with combinations of distance and time. I generally use run for a set distance and rest for a set distance or run for a set time and rest for a set time. To get there hit the mode button for the main menu then select Training>Workouts>Interval. From there select the type of interval you want (run time or distance / rest time or distance). Then you put in the values for the run and rest spots and how many intervals you want. You can also choose if you want a warm up and cool down time (I haven't used this so I don't quite know how it works). If you want to end an interval early, just hit the lap button.

It has been a while since I use the interval function but I think you need to enter in a number one higher than actual number of intervals if you are trying to run for a specific time or distance. For example, a 30 minute workout with a 3 min/2 min interval would need to have 7 reps. This may have been fixed but in the 305 but I can't remember. It is usually the opposite of what I choose so you might want to play with it a little.

Bill

Thanks SOOOOO much Bill. I haven't had a chance to change it yet, but THANK YOU!!! I am going to get out the user manual and try to take what you said, and what it says, and maybe I can get my interval entered without too much trouble. ;) Trust me there is ALOT of operator error on this end. :rotfl2:

WOOOHOOOOO:cool1: :woohoo: :yay: :worship: :cool1: :woohoo: :yay: :worship:

We can't wait for you to get back home safely to your family! Oh, and Cotton Row is only about a month away. Hoping I can meet you and Kristen in that sea of folks that day. :goodvibes

Oh, and WELCOME to all our new members!!!! :grouphug: I am new as well, and these people are AWESOME. Ask them anything, I guarantee you will get multiple answers to any questions you might throw at them. They are the BEST!!!! :thumbsup2

Kevin I will add my WOOHOO! (Not as flashy, though--I'm not much of an emoticon person) Have a safe and speedy journey home.

Shan Hope you appointment goes well next week and you have a speedy recovery.

Me I had 60 minutes of wonderful leg massage earlier today. Hope it helps me for next week. BTW, my massage therapist, Chad, won the 2008 WDW Half Marathon, so I'm hoping for good Karma for enxt week's Minnie!

Maura

LOSTIES:

I drove out to Kaleloa Airport (the old Barbers Point Naval Air Station)for an audit, and what do I see?

The LOST crews filming in the old Naval airplane hangars. I didn't know they were going to be out there.

Last Sunday they were at the old Paradise Park, where we went hiking. Out of view though.

Both locations had the big craft services (catering) tents set up, and all the trailers for the cast to rest in.

Welcome home Kevin, glad you're safe, have a good trip.

Jeff: I am a huge LOST fan and have stayed with it since the beginning. COOL that you get to see them every so often.

Kevin: I just want to add my WHHOOOOOHOOOOOO!!:woohoo: :woohoo:
Come home safe!

Today was a rest day for me, but I got my foam roller the other day and I am using that to help with stretching and massaging. It is actually a good workout in itself. You use alot of abs, triceps, shoulders doing the massages, I love the shin one, calves and hamstring massages/stretches.

I don't watch IDOL, but I do watch Dancing with the Stars and my favorites are Jason Taylor and Kristie Yamaguchi (sp))!!

Take care eveyone!!

Hi all!

Rest day for me so I've nothing to report. I did, however, sit in 5 hours of meetings (3 hours of which were quite productive) and my IT band really felt it. I really need to get up and walk around every hour or so for it to not hurt.

Z: WOO-HOO!!!!!!! I am so very happy for you and your family. Can't wait to meet you!

dsnyfan21: love my foam roller. I don't use it as much as I should, but it really is quite good.

jmasgat: hope the massage helps!

Kim: congrats! Looking forward to seeing you at marathon!

Cosi Bella: Welcome, welcome! Keep us posted on your efforts. Looking forward to meeting you at some of the races.

Allyson: Jeff is right. You will want to get out and show off your medal. My favorite is all the cast members who congratulate you and give you such support. You really do feel important. The first 1/2 I ever ran was the WDW 1/2. After the race when we got back to BWV and walked in with the tin foil around my body and the medal dangling from my neck, all, and I do mean ALL the cast members stopped what they were doing and applauded me. ME!! They were applauding for ME!! I was overwhelmed. Even the people in line, waiting to check in started applauding (although I don't think they really knew why, but I didn't care). It is a phenomenal feeling!

Then there is the next day WISH meet. We meet up the morning after the marathon, wearing our medals and it's just wonderful. Trust me, it's well worth it.

Have a lovely evening everyone!!

Wow: What a busy, busy thread in the past day. I'm loved reading your stories--and I think it would kind of be cool to have a thread called "What WISH Means to ME"--but am glad I chose to stay out of the fray. I felt a snark attack coming on and let me tell you, my snark attacks have a pretty big bite to go with them. Just call me the Great White Debra of the Midwest.

Anyway, because of the pace at which the thread has moved, I won't comment on each personal story except to say that these stories touch me, make me proud to be a WISHer, and make me wanna say "Awwwww." Except that would be too sappy, so I'll just go  and let you all know that I was enjoying a nice double shot of Glenlivet while the rest of you drank beer.

Vic: A beer crawl! A new event to train for?

Erin: Love the idea of a WO tracker like BT and think that continuing the ideas of teams (whether competitive or event-oriented) is a great idea. Mentoring is something I'd like to see us do, too. I know I need all the help I can get, but I like to think that I'll get to the point where I can mentor others.

DM Kim: :yay: Stick around for a while. You know one of the things I've noticed about WISHers? Everyone looks good in lime green!!

Anne:

Allie: Glad you're enjoying your Garmin loved one. And thanks for asking the questions so Bill could answer them; they were questions I didn't even know I had (I anticipate getting my Garmin sometime in the near future).

Aloha Jeff: I just love how you always volunteer to fall on your sword for us by recording all those moments in paradise. Very generous of you. :rolleyes1 Glad to know you "earned" that beer with your 8.5 miler. P.S. Thank you for feeding my Lostie habit; I cannot believe, however, in anything less than idyllic conditions in Oahu. It's my fantasy, and I must have it!

Shan: Well, I'm glad the doctor's appointment has put things into motion for a diagnosis. I don't know if it makes you feel better about things, but you're going to see a sports-medicine specialist...because you're an ATHLETE!

Christa: Oh no, you can't take away my precious inner voices. My voices, like my issues, are the only things that will be with me my entire life. Friends come and go, jobs change, I move, and even DOOD has changed from the young Romeo he once was, but my voices & issues are constant, faithful companions! P.S. "Tri to WO"--:rotfl2:

Mel: I'm so visiting you--that ice cream sounds delicious! I love a sweet & spicy combination. Aztec dark chocolate, for instance, makes me swoon. David Cook ain't bad either. Great run, btw!

Allyson: Thanks for the finishing-rate numbers for the Boston runners 70+ yo. It's very inspiring. :woohoo: with W4D5 of C25K; I'm so happy your repeat-weeks pattern is effective.

Tracy: You caught me--I wasn't resting last night. I was drinking after responding to & reading this thread. But I found it restful. :rotfl: Speaking of rest--good job on your rest day!
I am pretty new here also, but just jump on in - it's like taking off a bandaid the faster you do it the better - kinda.
For some reason this makes perfect sense to me, even if I couldn't explain it to another person!!! About the pic of you post-Mount Trashmore...can I call you a dirty, dirty girl now?

Craig: Oh, how I wish I was going to be at the Minnie. *Sigh* My half isn't until the 17th and at Cleveland, which I'm sure is lovely but not a Disney event. But the advice is well-issued, well-received, and being followed. P.S. I just can't conceive of a soccer post as being off-topic. :goodvibes

Amy: Toasted pine nuts on everything! Salads, cottage cheese, rice. Okay, maybe not ice cream. What can I say--I'm a nutty girl.

Leana: Yay for the successful body camp and for the preventative/recuperative appointment with the chiro before the Minnie. Very wise and entirely in keeping with your very healthy lifestyle. Funny story about Fargo--the year of their first marathon was at the end of May. It was very windy and rainy and cold, and at one point--light snow flakes. So if Calgary is weird, so is Fargo. (Not that I'm disputing the latter...).

Bill: Mmm, melty pork. For you, I'd even try a piece. :scared1: :rotfl2: Very cool gifts for Lynnda--I'm always all about the media!

Kristi: Field trip, field trip!!! Can you handle one more 4yo--me? Yoga's deep relaxation/breathing techniques might come in handy tomorrow.

Carrie: And that's another vote for many stress-relief benefits of yoga! Breathe in, breathe out. So much more sophisticated than "wax on, wax off," don't you think?

Cecilia:  for you, for everything. My thoughts are with you.

Kevin: I've always wanted another kid brother, one that I could actually get in all kinds of trouble. Care to apply? I'm so glad your running/training/WISHing schedule is back on track.

Stacie: I just love that your whole family is doing the Minnie. What great memories you'll have.

Jen: I know I've said it before, but your DDs are gems!

Scott: Does your inner cyclist compete with your outer cyclist? I can't imagine who would win, given how your outer cyclist kicks tail! And :woohoo: for the Minnie Week--that will fit nicely with your Mr. Minnie-verse responsibilities, don't you think? Your pic suggests you're a shoe-in for the title, you know!

Frank: Tuscany, huh? That sounds like it will be incredible. And you're another soccer fan. Craig's the expert in these parts, but I do enjoy watching a good match. :woohoo: for FSC & GOL TV, which DOOD & I discovered in Fargo. It almost made the winter bearable.

Cam: I never told you this, but I saw you from afar on the Marathon. Of course, I recognized you from your pics, and I should have gotten up the courage to say "hi" on the course--but I didn't. (Race day nerves made me stupid, I think.) Let me just say I was pulling for you that day, even if you didn't know who I was.

Krista: Aww, come on. Fondle yesterday's drama, just a little bit. So I can say you did. And a bigger awwwww, for the baby kicking and all these special pregnancy moments. I really do appreciate you recording them for us, as it makes me feel like I'm experiencing a new WISH baby joining the team.

NEPats Bill:
"Kind of like soccer on skates, but you get to hit people."
Now somebody needs to use that as a marketing slogan. Maybe the Red Wings. And the only way you're going to be swept is if someone brings along a hockey stick--and I don't hear anyone volunteering!

CarolA: I, too, wish I had the courage to pack up and move to Orlando. DOOD & I dream of retiring there to work at WDW, where his dream job is working with horticulture & mine is the chewing-gum patrol.

Connie: Great news about the DOOC, Duchess! Like I said up-post, everyone looks good in lime green! :thumbsup2

Patricia: Yes, you CAN do this! You ARE doing this! WTG on W1D2 of C25K. Keep posting!

Cosi Bella: What a great background on "Why (You) Love Running." I think how people fit running into their schedules differs person to person. I'm a morning person, myself, and have access to a TM in the dark/safety/rainy weather issues and to a DH who nags me into getting up. Other people are more self-motivated, like you sound. We do invest in the gym for the TM access, but also for the weight training & XT opportunities. I've found that the expense "forces" us to try XT in order to get our money's worth--in turn, I'm a stronger person & (hopefully) a better runner. Like I said, everyone is different, so let us know what works for you!

Morgan: Okay, here's where I apply team pressure for you to sign up for another 5K. Double miles for Ohana!!! Or how about, another 5K earns you a new running skirt and, if you sign up now, you can use the WISH discount at runningskirts.com! (Did those help?)

Hockey Kim: Yay for October (ToT?) and Marathon weekend!!!!! :dance3:

z: :woohoo: for the countdown home! That's such good news!!!

Maura: Oooh, you were massaged by a Disney race celebrity! Did it give you goosebumps. I do think it must be good luck; instead of rubbing a lucky statue, you were rubbed (in the right way) by a lucky and well-trained masseuse!

Martha: The older I get, the harder I find sitting for extended period of time. I really think being a couch potato was easiest for me when I was in my 20s! Btw, is the WISH meet always the next day?

As for me: Well, I went the gym today and.... (can you feel the tension building?)

...continued my program of resting. (What a let-down, huh?)

I did core work, light upper-body-only weights, and lots of stretching (and I'd say flexing, although no one would recognize it as such). I also managed to stay out of the fray of FC gossip, which generally requires more flexibility than I have. I know, a tension-free and injury-free day. I'm giving it one more day of rest before a light day of XT on Friday & my 10-mile LR scheduled for Saturday.

Sorry there's not more to report, but I tried to build some drama into the narrative for you. But even though conflicts & obstacles make for good fiction, I prefer my life drama & trauma-free.

Debra: ....ummmmm I just knew I was going to catch you! But drinking is very restful!!! Now after your HUGE post I hope you are back to RESTING!!

Sure you can call me a dirty girl, seeing as how the color on my leg goes from pale ghost like to brownish/black when I'm visiting my trash hill.

I am off to do some more resting, like making sure I stay up to watch Men in Trees!!! (one of a few of my favs!!)

Take care!

TRACEY:Men in Trees? Me too, not all this Idol stuff, although I do like that David Cook.

ALL:
THANK YOU, what great welcomes and encouragment.
I had an off day today, had to take the dogs to the vet and run up to Dayton. It's amazing how long things take when you are traveling with a 7 month old.
Must stay on Track!!

GOOD EVENING TEAM!!

WARNING - Another sappy post!! :confused3
Just kidding not really that bad. I just wanted to say that Craig - I don't know why but your post made me cry. And Judy - yours too!!

Craig - you have no idea how right you are about the potentially serious - I already went through surgery once, and the pain scared me so bad this time that it actually started to feel better today so instead of jumping back on the treadmill - I rested.

OK so I have to go for now but I will be back tomorrow

I LOVE YOU GUYS

I thought I'd been keeping up this week, but apparently I'm behind. This may take a while...

Angie - Congratulations on a great 1st day at work. I'm so sorry that your back is hurting. I've been really worried about the mileage you've been doing and afraid this might happen. Please REST and take it easy, get through Minnie, then concentrate on getting healthy for January!

Kristi - I can totally relate to your funk. Just keep reading and one day you'll feel like getting back to it. I'm still going really slow and easy, but it's coming back!

Terri - DH and I were discussing Lance Armstrong's Boston time, and he said "that's what you ran, isn't it?" Yeah, except that was my HALF time...

Stacie - Great job on your 7 miler at the beach. Sounds like you ran most of the route for the Crystal Coast half that I blew off. :rolleyes1 And hooray for Susan!

Cosi Bella - :welcome: Congratulations on the upcoming wedding, and great job combining planning and the half!

Carol - I am so envious of you for being at AK's 10th anniversary and getting to hear Joe Rhode. AK is our favorite park, and he is our hero. I love the comment about "stop and smell the roses!"

Kim - :welcome:

Tracy - I'll join you in the margaritas! And I agree with you on DWTS - Kristi is doing great, but I like the way Jason is doing too. Kristi lives here in Raleigh so she's the local favorite.

Allyson - I went back to the hotel after the half, stretched, took an ice bath followed by a warm shower, ate lunch, took an hour nap at the pool, and then joined my family at MK. We had dinner at California Grill to watch the fireworks, and I was pretty much done after that. When I first got off the bus after the race I swore I couldn't take another step, but I really did feel pretty good after a short rest.

Cecilia - Sorry about your MCM decision, but I totally understand.

Kevin/Solo - Good to see you back. Thought about you the other night while watching "Brothers & Sisters!"

Carrie - I LOVE the quote from DH!

Krista - Awesome seeing the baby move!

Frank - DH is a HUGE Man U fan, so by default I am also. (DD pulls for Arsenal, partly to annoy her dad and partly because it's the only stadium we actually saw when we were in London!) Cristiano Ronaldo is by far my favorite player.

Kevin/Z - Whooohooooo! :dance3:

Carrie, Cam, Angie, Martha, Pat & all who posted about what WISH means - Ditto. I ran my first 5K at the Minnie 2 years ago and found WISH while training for it. I kept running because of WISH, and finished my first Half in January because of WISH. Like Angie, I don't finish things, and I don't go up to strangers and introduce myself, and I don't go places where I don't know anyone else. I've done ALL those things since finding WISH. Thank you to each and every one of you, old and new.

My world: Visited college campuses last weekend with DD. Turned out to be great training since we had to walk all over mountain campuses. Had free time Friday afternoon, so we took off on a waterfall search and ended up hiking to the top of a mountain as well as seeing several gorgeous waterfalls. Did 4 miles on the TM Monday evening - had planned to do more but both ankles hurt so at 3.6 I opted to walk! Mystic and I did a 1 mile walk tonight; then I did 11 on the bike. Am still planning to do a 5K on Sunday as long as the ankle feels okay on Friday when I try to run again.

Jackie

I keep saying that I'm going to post to this thread "later" and then I check a little later and the thread is 2 pages longer! :) My, we're talkative this week!

So I'm just dropping by to say hello!

I hope that all of you who are nursing aches and pains take great care of yourselves and start to feel better soon. I want to get to run with you in January! I wish I was getting to go to the Minnie - it sounds like so much fun!

I did a trail run on Tuesday that was not so great (particularly after the fun I had at the 5K race I did on Saturday). I bagged it 5 minutes early and just walked out. I was beat - I really hate the hills we have on the local trails! However, I am planning a trail race in early June, so I think I will make myself run on the trails at least once a week. For tomorrow's run, though, I'm going back to my usual route, which I love.

I've also been working on my core this week thanks to our great core thread!

I'll try to get in on the weekly thread earlier next week.

Hi Wishers.

Hope it's not too late to join in the fun?

I'm trying to get back on track..I had planned on doing the Minnie this year but training got delayed:confused3

My new plan is to sign up for the TOT (will be walking the race) I'm starting now to build up a good base. Did 3.5 miles today (very slow pace but it's a start)

Morgan- I usually run around my neighborhood. Well, technically it is the next neighborhood over. I live just into Strongsville but am less than a mile from Berea. I usually run down Priem, over Sprague (the other Sprague) and into the neighborhood around Fair/West in Berea.

I live very lose to the Bonnie park area but I don’t run there. I do bike there though. When I do run in the Metroparks I usually start by Valley Pkwy and Bagley and run back towards Strongsvile.

It isn’t really well publicized but there is a 5K on June 7th at Byer’s. Mayor DePiero’s website has a sign up form and web link. I also highly recommend the Run Wild for a Cure at the zoo on May 10th. I might have already mentioned it but it is a lot of fun to run the zoo. Be prepare though because you do a couple big hills, including the one up to the cat/primate bulding.

Oh, and go figure, another Polish person from Parma, OH. I am pretty sure outside of Poland there is no where on earth with more.:thumbsup2

Kevin- Nice to meet you (well, sort of) and stay safe. Are you over there in the military?

Krista- Good use of the bride/powdered wig wearing oldy time guy emoticon::bride:

Debra- Soccer really must be the beautiful game if it could inspire the use of winter, Fargo, and bearable in the same sentence. You’ll have to find a bar with Setanta to watch the Man U – Chelsky match this weekend though.

Jackie- Your DH is obviously wise.:worship: Arsenal are fun to watch though I didn’t want to see Thiery Henry go. Look at the bright side, at least she isn’t a Liverpool fan.

As far as I go, I am on the way out to do about 8.25. It’s a nice clear night, 57 degrees, and 42% humidity…just about perfect.

I don't wear the colors because I feel like I'm more of a peripheral member of the group

Dude. Seriously?
You are hardly peripheral. I think integral is a more appropriate word. You are always there with just the right words of advice or encouragement when one of us is floundering, whether in body or spirit. I don't know where I would be in this journey without your support and guidance over the last 3 years.
