Wk of Apr 2--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I was finally able to get out and do my 3 miles yesterday. I finished in 39:38 and was quite happy with that!

Thanks to you guys, I did tie my shoes looser and my feet were much better - barely tingling. I also make a conscious effort to run/walk with my hands at heart-level to avoid the bad swelling. It did help some, but by the second mile, both hands were pretty swollen, the right hand worse than left. I will have to learn to live with it, I suppose. As long as it's just annoying & uncomfortable and not causing any damage or harm. The good thing is that it goes right down as soon as I am done.

Never thought I'd say this, but I can't wait to get out tomorrow morning for my first 6 miler! :yay: Today is my rest day & I am going to do plenty of that in preparation for tomorrow.

Terri - I also vote for the DL 1/2. This will be the one & only inaugural race! (but then again, I am not a big sports fan)

Terri, As a fellow Philly fan, DO THE DISNEYLAND HALF!!!! With what little improvements Banner et al have done to the team, I do not think you will be missing out on a Super season. I fear the E-A-G-L-E-S are not going to be flying very far this year and an inaugural event has the potential for much more memories.

OH, by the way, I took part of a bonus I got this year and treated myself to a Garmin yesterday :cool1: . Can't wait to get out for a nice long run and see just how far the trails are.

OK, work has blown up once agin. I should not behere, but was afraid to miss many more days. Here's what I caught from my skim. Please note, really only had time to skim and I know that's dangerous, Just ask Krista. ;)

Krista - Think you're confused. neither Helen nor I have kids. ;) ;) ;) Oh, and just to clarify, I was not the buddy who untangled her hair.

Dave - Thansk for giving my brain the song of the day. ;) I'm afraid we may be rubbing off on you with our goofy little songs. Congrats on the Garmin!

Cam - Welcome back!!!! We missed you!!! Need to read the report later. Work's busy and my head's throbing, so forgive me for skimming.

jodi - Yes those aare extremem workout. To add a little more to what someone else said - During our 20-week trainign fo rthe full marathon, we do 2 or 3 runs during the week. They range from 30 to 60 minutes. Never more than a 60 minut run durign the week. Then the LR on Saturday. Yikes, 5 miles does sounda bit extreme durign teh week.

Claire - :goofy: :thumbsup2

Hope to check back later and read a little more thoroughly. If I don't get a chance, have a great weekend!!!!

Oh, I did XT Wed. and 30 last night with under 10:30 miles. OK, someone tell me how I did 40 miles in 40 minutes last year on a weekday run. 10:30s feel like I'm really pushing now. SHouldn't I be in better shape than last summer?

Hi, everyone! Just popping in to say that I STILL have not worked out at all since last Saturday morning's 3 mile stroll to SS. Well, that's if you don't include my 10.5 hours of walking at EPCOT last Saturday and my fast-walking from the exit of Expedition Everest back to the single rider & fast pass lines on Sunday. UGH! I really do think my life will get back to normal after Andy's play this weekend. BTW, have I mentioned that I am an absolute nervous wreck? Let's see, between the sweaty palms & racing heart and the speed-cleaning that I'll have to do at my house today before the crowds descend, there has to be SOME aerobic benefit in there. :teeth:

I miss you guys desperately. And I OBVIOUSLY need you all to give me a quick kick in the bottom to get back on track. Right now, I am LOVING being the Mom and giving everything I have to my kids (besides the chaos and outrageous commitment that is work right now, during an expedited proceedings case on a huge corporate deal for the next week or so.) Okay, that was such a long run-on sentence. And I am definitely NOT getting paid by the word.

Gotta get back to work. But I just wanted to say to Terri -- PLEASE come to DL! We are going to have such a great time! And it IS an all-weekend event. And it is the INAUGURAL DL 1/2! The castle medal will last a lifetime. The EAGLES opening game experience is just one of many and you won't walk away with JEWELRY!!! We really don't want to party at the Candy Cane Inn pool without you! And just THINK of how happy you could make a friend by giving them your ticket!

Sunny-- OK, you asked: My best time for a long-course 400m freestyle was 4:58. For a short-course 500yd it was a 4:46. Generally I swam sprints, though, so I didn't swim these distances often.

Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Now I shall call you SpeedyX2!!! Wow!

Lynn-- run off the bike :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: You are joking, right? I don't even own a bike. I'm going to be lucky if I can ride a rental, let alone run off of it  I think I will aim at coming in dead last for this one. That way I can't be disappointed!!!!

MelR-- Follow your heart on the 50miler. I'm sure you can do it, but you have to do what feels right. :grouphug:

Cam-- :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: work be gone :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Carrie-- I'm skimming, too. I seemed to have caught bits and pieces of discussions of sticking items in odd places... I'm supposed to be getting ready for a telecon in 15 minutes. yikes! Better focus.

All you new Garmin owners-- Congrats! Once you go Garmin, you'll never go back ;) If you got the 201 or higher, its definitelyt worth the added work of downloading the pc software so you can upload your runs and see them on the pc.

Gotta run :moped: (I wish I meant that literally)

Sunny

Krista - No I haven't purchased my Garmin yet. I have made a pact with myself that I would not purchase it until I had some road running time in. With the weather and well not quite over my fear of reinjuring my back I just haven't done it yet. It is supposed to be nice this weekend so I may try to get out then.

Which is the easiest surface to run on for joints? I normally walk/run on the side of the road but that contributed to my problems. There is a gravel walk/run trail not too far away would that be better????

Happy training everyone!

Minnie - The gravel trail will be alot easier on teh joint. Watch out if it's not level, though. Plus, if the gravel is loos, it will be like running in quick sand. A lot of effort for little distance. Still, as long as it's level, it should eb easier on teh joints.

Just a quickie today as I'm packing for a weekend at WDW. DH has a conference next week so we're going up a bit early to stay at the Swan. We have to come home Sunday, but he gets to stay until Wed . I'm planning to go up to the Y and cross-train today, then tomorrow DD13 and I will do our 6 miles around BW and Y&BC (what is the name of that lake?).

Looks like lots of WISHers will be at WDW in May. We're doing an overnight for the Minnie, then our annual week-long trip from May 28-June 2. Anyone else going to be there then?

Cam...it was great seeing you! Sorry you got the bug too...wonder if it was the empanadas or the rellena? Maybe we should avoid Bongos walkup in the future :crazy2: :wizard: for your son's performance!

Terri...I'm with everyone else. There'll never be another 'first' DL half. Besides, you need that first castle to go with your first Goofy. Can we talk you into a first Minnie as well? :teeth:

Krista...I haven't even looked at the Bucs/Dolphins schedules yet. Sounds like a chilly game for the Bucs!

:wizard: to everyone for less work and sickness!

Just stopping in to say hello and see what everyone is up to!

I officially signed up for my first 5k today. "The Hoya and the Hare" takes place April 15th close to home in Kennesaw, GA. I'm both excited and a little nervous not knowing what to expect. I'm going to drive the course this Sunday so I can see how much elevation change there is (I suck on hills right now). I've been right on plan with my training and cross training and ran my best mile ever (9:11) last Saturday!!

I also purchased some new shoes and ran in them for the first time last night. I got some New Balance 845's and boy do they make a difference!! It was like running on pillows compared to the shoes that I had been running in. Now if they only came with Turbo Boost, I'd be all set! :)

In non-running news, I booked a trip to WDW Sept 17-23 to take advantage of the free dining. Going with my daughter and staying at the Pop Century. I'm not sure how that will work out with training as I will be preparing for the Disney Half but I'll cross that bridge when I get there ;)

Glad to see that everyone is doing good!! Congrats to those who did the Columbus event!

Judy

Have fun, Judy! We will miss you terribly!

My world has been crazy. We are into full tilt school "Music Man" mode. Last night was the first official performance and it was wonderful! Only three more performances to go. Phew. Please send some pixie dust so my poor kids don't get sick from being up until 11:00 pm each night. But they are having a ball!

I FINALLY got out there and exercised. Did 3 miles in 30:20 minutes. Had a quick start and ran 9:20, 10:00 and 11:00 splits. I ran in my new trail shoes just to break them in before Arizona. They aren't as wonderful as my Asics but they weren't bad at all.

Also managed to squeaze in a 30 minute yoga session and 7 minute ab routine. I'm heading to pilates tomorrow morning!

Scott: Congrats on making your 5K official. Unfortunately I won't be here when you post your results but I'll definitely be thinking of you on the 15th! :cheer2: I know you'll do great!

Cam: I think we're more nervous than our kids for their play! Tell your son to "break a leg" and have a blast with his performances!! I'll be thinking of him this weekend.

Judy: Have a fabulous cruise! :sunny:

Mel: Have a great WDW weekend!

For Sunny, MelR, and any one else doubting themselves-
There is a statement frequently quoted on BeginnerTriathlete.com:
DFL>DNF>>DNS
Translation: dead friggin last beats out did not finish and they both greatly trump did not start. The attitude is that just getting out there and doing your best is some much more than so many other people do.

BTW Sunny- how tall are you and if you are under about 5'5", are you longer legged or torso? I may have a temporary solution to your bike issue but I'll warn you that it will spoil you and then you won't want a more economy priced bike. Roo baby is a good steed that will be going to waste until Erin finds a more permanent place in FL.

Kevin- I was just joshing you before about being slow before because I couldn't swim close to that. Started swimming too old to become good. But you're right that your fly is very impressive. Oh and those fast women, I spent a summer working with Stanford swim camps and Richard Quick would run practices for some of his swimmers- you know Jenny, Gabriella, Summer.

Minnie- yes, the trail surface would be better for you than the canted road.
Scott- congrats on registering for your 5K
Judy- enjoy your cruise
Mel(Chimera)- we'll be there Minnie Weekend and then again from the 18-22 for the FL 70.3 Ironman race
Terri- there will only be one inuagral race but if you'll regret watching McNabb get sacked that much...(The Eagles are the only pro idiotball team that I follow too- I'm a Syracuse grad and worked/lived in Philly for a year)

Congrats to the new Garmin owners. I'll have a 201 for sale within the next couple of months because I can get an absolute rocking price on the 305 through the Army Triathlon Club. I'm really just waiting on Garmin to
release their Mac OS software that they said they are going to this Spring.

Ran 5.46 at 9:36/mi today and swam 3000 this morning. Was the last day of 'recovery' week. Tomorrow will be a 30 mile ride w/ 15 miles of tempo and then a 40 mile ride followed immediately by an 8 mile run on Sunday. First triathlon of the season is 3 weeks from Sunday in St Petersburg. Off to class now.

Thanks, Amy -- "Break a Leg" to yours, as well! I hope you have a great time and that everyone stays healthy. I know Andrew is looking more wiped out than I've ever seen him. I am hoping he will rest this afternoon, but I know he is very excited!

Sorry everyone. Back to your regularly scheduled training thread! :goodvibes :grouphug:

Totally :offtopic: but:

My May trip to the Flower/Garden Show was cancelled :sad2:

I know I shouldn't feel bad as we are going in July for a week but I am so bummed because we have talked about doing this for a year :guilty:

I know I am fortunate to be able to go at all but still.......

Thanks for letting my whine :rolleyes1

Interesting little PR piece on insidetri.com, the website for Inside Triathlon magazine.

PR: Team Estrogen introduces fitness clothing for larger sizes

by IT Interactive
This report filed April 7, 2006

Hillsboro, Oreg. - The typical local bike shop offers just a small selection of women's cycling clothing. Worse yet, some offer just a few small and medium sized men's shorts for women to wear, figuring that women can just find their "guy size". For the plus size woman looking for a fun family activity or an enjoyable alternative to the gym, well, she's been mostly out of luck. Fortunately, today's plus-size cyclist who struggles to find anything in her size needs to look no further.

Susan Otcenas, co-founder of TeamEstrogen.com in Hillsboro, Oreg., started cycling 15 years ago and was frustrated by the lack of clothing options for women, particularly women over size 12. Susan, who sports a size 14, was motivated to act and founded TeamEstrogen.com in 1998. Since that time, Team Estrogen has outfitted more than 50,000 satisfied women, including 2,000 plus size customers.

Team Estrogen offers a wide range of women's cycling, triathlon and fitness clothing. The site also features built-in "specialty stores" that cater to women with special sizing needs. Specialty stores include petite, tall, plus, even maternity apparel in sizes ranging from extra small to 4X.

Team Estrogen's vision is that by offering this extensive range for all shapes and sizes, more women will reasonably be able to choose cycling as a way to fitness. Fitness suppliers are tuning in to the female marketplace, offering more choices for women in general, but very few are making a conscious effort to support the plus-size segment. Team Estrogen hopes to change that trend. With increasing numbers of women on bikes, Team Estrogen is encouraging suppliers to naturally include a broader range of larger garments in their clothing lines. Team Estrogen also works with its vendors to create an array of cycling pieces specifically for the plus size customer - items she won't find anywhere else. Being a larger size is no reason to sacrifice fashion or function.

When asked to comment about how the marketplace has responded to her efforts, Susan replies, "Almost daily, I speak with women from around the country who are unable to find apparel that fits and flatters their fuller figures. By providing women with appropriate (and comfortable!) cycling and fitness clothing, we are encouraging them to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and motivating them to stick with an exercise routine."

:thanks: Lynne, that's a great article. Going to check out the site!! That is an awesome quote! I may put on that on the back of my shirt when we do Minnie, DL and WDW!!
Cam so glad you are back!! 4 weeks to Minnie! I may not be able to meet at EoS on Saturday. I think my niece and nephew are marching in Spectromagic (?) at Magic Kingdom that night. But wait! since we will have our own car and not have to depend on WDW transportation...it may still be doable! :jumping1:
Oh, hereee ya go pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: for yours and AmyBeth's kiddos!
Scott, how exciting to sign up for an official event! :thumbsup2 It should be a beautiful area to run in this time of year.

Pat
OK, someone tell me how I did 40 miles in 40 minutes last year on a weekday run.
Whoa!!! You were really, really flying!!! :lmao: Tell us...how DID you do that?

Have a geat training weekend everyone, and have FUN!!

Love the quote! I was almost DNS on my April 17th race. But now the trip is bumped to the 20th so I'll be starting, finishing and hopefully nowhere near DFL.

Thanks so much for the offer. I'm 5'7" so I don't think I could squeaze myself onto your bike! There's a bike rental (actually, two) right on the bike path. Its just a matter of getting there and doing it a couple of times. I signed up for my first ever Spinnig class for next Monday. Work better not keep me from it.

I did 5.5 miles today, too. Not so speedy. My avg was 10:20 but my first three splits were ~9:40. I walked quite a bit after I hit 3 miles. It was a beautfiul day. Now its raining. Glad I got out there.

Happy LRing everyone :moped: I might go for 10 tomorrow if weather permits. (Ha, listen to me, when has weather ever had a say in it :rotfl2: I'm telling ya, the IC must be long gone...)
