I'm now a veteran of 2 assaults on Malistaire's Lair and would like to share a few pointers with my fellow DIS wizards. If you would prefer finding your own way through, I suggest you stop reading NOW.
NOTE: KingsIsle has already changed this area slightly since the initial release on the Test Server, so it may change again after the next patch or two. The following info was current as of Tuesday, February 10.
Just so you know: There are NO health wisps to be found anywhere within this instance. Fortunately, you
can teleport out and jump back if you need more health or mana. At least you can at the moment. To be on the safe side, you might want to have one of your party tp out and back as soon as you get inside, just to make sure they haven't changed it.
I hear it takes at least three people, but I'd assume the more people working together, the better...
Presently, it takes at least 3 people to complete. There are 3 crystals in 3 separate areas that need to be activated
at the same time in order to open the door to the Crown of Fire (where Malistaire resides). You don't need to leave someone stationed at each as you find them, however. You can just go back to them, once you know where they are.
Also, after gaining entry to the Crown of Fire, there are 2 draconian guards (ICE) on each side of a final set of doors. This is a mandatory fight, and each guard has its own combat circle. Like the crystals, they both must be defeated at approximately the same time (say, within a minute of each other) for the doors to open. So your party will have to split up to take them on simultaneously.
Anybody know approximately how long it takes to finish?
It took us a little over 2 and a half hours the other night, but that was because
LafChill and I had previously done it, so knew our way around (somewhat). Our first time through, however, it took us over 3 hours.
It would be great if we have one person who has done it, to show us around.
I'd be happy to act as tour guide -- but Thursday night's not good for me. Either Friday night or sometime over the weekend would work.
I wandered through the area last night and have no clue what we're supposed to do there. LOL!
I don't know whether this is a bug or if it is intentional, but there is absolutely NO direction given once you get inside the instance. You're not told, for example, about finding the elevator, or activating the crystals, or fighting both draconian guards at the same time, or anything else.
In addition to lack of direction, the maps are pretty messed up there. (2 of the areas are actually reversed!) Don't be surprised if you can't make heads nor tails out of them. For the most part, however, there is pretty much only one way to go, so you'll eventually stumble across the right route.
I also wandered inside, i did find the last book and found myself facing four monsters by myself.

So I figured I would come back with some help...
That last book is relatively easy to get, as it is in an area where you can avoid fights. There are a couple other fights that can be avoided (for example, Tumok Gravelbeard). However, there are many other fights that cannot be avoided. Some, such as the Gurtoks, are obvious. A few others may
look avoidable, but are not (so always keep your health high and your deck prepped).
Speaking of THE GURTOKS [the big Helephant things in Dragon's Roost]: Currently the Gurtok Piercer is labeled ICE when he is really DEATH. He casts primarily Death spells and Life spells used against him get a damage boost. This is a bug I expect them to fix (one way or the other) in an update, so proceed with caution. FYI, his two minions are correctly labeled ICE.
Regarding THE STONE ROSES: The Dragon Claw Canyon rose can be found at the front left side of the large courtyard after you disembark from your drake. It is currently bugged on the Live servers -- it's been fixed on Test -- and can be seen but not reached. Once they fix this bug, it will be easy enough to go back and get.
The final rose will NOT be easy to get, however. NOR is it in Dragon's Roost. Instead it is inside the Crown of Fire (within spitting distance of Malistaire), over on the left hand side just beyond where you fight the first group of Soul Servants.
Speaking of SOUL SERVANTS: They are like a bunch of pesky gnats. They are Rank 8 Death mobs, who constantly cast one-pip attack spells. They won't do a whole lot of damage, but shielding against them is almost meaningless. STRATEGY TIPS: Load up on Attack All Enemy spells (i.e. Frog, Meteor, Tempest, Blizzard, Sandstorm) if you can. Also, hang on to your Death shields until you see one who might be saving up pips for a bigger spell. And Necromancers: you might as well save your prisms for the Big Guy. (You will be fighting more of them alongside Malistaire, who is also Death -- and has 10,000 hit points, to boot.)
Good luck to you all!
