Within 30 days- Modification Question

I am new to DVC and don’t want to screw something up and lose points. I have booked my father a Garden/Pool View at Boardwalk in early February for 17 points. I have a March UY so these are borrowed points that I know must be used or lost, but I’m not sure how modification works within 30 days and so close to my UY ending. If I am lucky enough to have it open and snag a Boardwalk view for the same date which is also 17 points what happens? Does it transfer equally or take different “new” points to book then move the other points to holding which would cause me to lose them?

In that situation, if you can do the modification because boardwalk view is actually available, the result would be to just move the points in the one reservation to the other.

An exception might occur if doing it online and you have banked points into this use year since the time you made the reservation and those banked points have not been used. The online system might take those banked points first before the borrowed points, and thus borrowed points in the current reservation could end up in holding. If that is the situation it may be better to call MS to make the change, which can assure that only the points in the current reservation are used.

With a March UY though it won't make any difference as both holding points and any other points in that UY are going to expire as of March 1st.

Maybe I need to add more information. I had 3 UY21 points left and borrowed 14 UY22 for the 17. There my account right now has zero points for UY21

Since you are new to DVC I'm assuming one contract. And since there are no other points remaining in your 21 UY it will use those same points when you go thru modifying to change the room. At this point you also should have it set up as a waitlist for the Boardwalk view to replace the pool/garden view and set the waitlist to expire at 7 days prior to check in.

The only time it’s an issue within 30 days is if you modify to less points and they end up in holding, which then can’t be used except for reservations 60 days or less from check in and expire at end of your UY.

Since the end of your UY is less than 60 days away, and these are borrowed points it doesn’t really matter.

As mentioned, waitlist and stalk for that night and use the modify feature to change it if it becomes available.
