with the new travel warnings, is anyone afraid to fly??

Helenm, don't sweat the drowning. If you are really scared you will be dead of a heart attack or stroke before you hit the water. LOL

We regret the things we DO NOT do far more than the things we DID.

Terror Alert
To all those who are afraid to fly because of the latest terror alert :
I completely understand and am sympathetic to your feelings . However, I would respectfully like to ask all of you to never give a second thought to living your life the same way you did before 9/11, especially when it comes to flying to Orlando, or anywhere else for that matter . If we allow THEM to terrorize us and cripple us with fear then THEY WIN ! Being an American , being a New Yorker , and especially being a proud and grateful member of the FDNY I choose to refuse to be terrorized by anyone . I will not dishonor the memories of all those we lost and I don't want my children to live their lives in fear .

GOD BLESS AMERICA !

I am not afraid to fly. I am, however, growing more concerned about driving. Everyday I see more dangerous drivers on the road. For me...flying is easy, driving is what frightens me.

Oh I second that. I hate to drive. Of course I am from NY and did not even get my license until I was 25:) All cars could be banished from the face of the Earth and I would be quite happy.

DH and I flew October 2001 and I was a little nervous but there were National Guard all over Boston Logan (with many large guns and weapons) so we felt a bit better. DH is a black belt, 6'4 210lbs and would reallllly hurt anyone trying anything on our plane. :p

We flew to WDW 10 days after 9/11. It was a surprise trip for our children (then 9 & 8). We had everything planned and then wondered if our children who had watched alot of 9/11 reports on the news, would want to go. Well we woke them at 3am and told them we were going to Disney and they were overjoyed(what child wouldn't be). We proudly put on our red, white and blue clothes and got on the plane and flew to MCO. When we landed the whole plane clapped, cried and thanked God we all arrived safely. Since that trip we put on our red, white and blue and proudly walk through the airport and board our plane to WDW. We will do it again in 20 Days 15 Hrs 53 Mins 59 Secs. Careful and praying but we are going in our red, white and blue.

I think I first became a nervous flyer after the Dec 92 Noreaster, when I was 7 months pregnant with my first child. Most of the flights going to the northeast had been canceled except ours. We flew into Newark with a 50 mile and hour tailwind. I just kept thinking, "What did I do to my unborn child". since then I had been nervous more for concern for my kids. When we flew after 9/11 for the first time I was a bit nervous, but once the plane took off, I was fine. On our return trip I think I was more comfortable then I had been in years. Weird, but just a real calm.
Kilee we are flying out of JFK on Jetblue the same day your trip starts according to your countdown, and we will be at the MK at MNSSHP the next night.
I can't be to nervous about flying anymore because my parents are moving to Hawaii and if I want to see them again I will have to go there, now that would be one tough drive.

I'm not scared.

1) I will not let those cowards win, I will continue to live my life the way I want it to.

2) If someone was to try and take the plane I am on, they better be prepared to deal with ME, I may not know kung-fu, but I do know crazy!

3) Other passengers are going to be on my side, 100-200+ to 4-6 are pretty good odds :)

4) If something did happen, and the plane I'm in goes down, I have a loving God who is going to welcome me into his kingdom with open arms, and the thought of that comforts me. I know he'll comfort my family and friends, and I know he will deal with those who caused it to happen.

I'm leaving in 7 days and some change. Flying non-stop, Delta, DFW-MCO. I'll step onto the plane without hesitation and without fear, some guy running around a desert with a towel on his head is not going to scare me into living my life any different.

darren
(I don't mean to offend anyone with the towel on the head comment, I respect your right to choose your own religion and personal beliefs)

p.s. arrrrrrr

Hey! I like your attitude! I know what you mean about knowing how to do crazy, I could pretty much guarantee that I woud not go down quietly....screaming maybe, but not quietly! (haha) actually if it came to my families safely, I would do everything in my power to make sure they were safe!

If this helps anybody feel better my husband and I just flew in and out of JFK this past weekend and it was just fine. Sure, the security lines were a bit longer but such is life. The only major difference I noticed was security now requires ALL passengers to remove their shoes to be scanned (not sure if this is just at JFK or at all international airports).

My sister and brother in law just flew from JFK to St. Lucia and reported no problems other than beefed up security. They return tomorrow so I will be sure and post another report. My mom and her friend flew to Maine on Wednesday and other than a flight delay due to a crew running late they saw no problems either.

Since 9/11 I have flown across country three times (NY to LA) and overseas twice and really never felt unsafe. I understand feeling safe is totally subjective but thought perhaps anecdotale information might ease the mind of some.

The United States for years has been a huge target for terrorists, it was just after 9/11 it became a public awareness issue. If you fly anywhere overseas you will notice (even prior to 9/11) the security was/is always much tighter than in US Airports... while the US still has a long way to go I think they are on a much better track to maximize the safety of all passengers.

I fly Jet Blue quite a bit and you will notice right before take off they say "the metal doors to the cabin are now closed" (or something to that effect). I also am loyal to Delta and never have I heard them announce that. Each airline handles their security issues different within the bounds provided by the Gov. It is not to say it is not there, perhaps they just dont announce it.
