There IS a drug that can help lessen your symptoms and shorten the duration. But you MUST call your Dr. as SOON as you think that you might be getting something. I don't recall the name of it, but I know that I have heard it advertised on TV. And SIL reminded me of it last night when she was telling me about my nephew having the flu and taking him to the doctors' after a few days. The doctor told her that she (the Dr.) COULD have done something if they would have called her immediately. Now she could only recommend fluids and rest. So CALL YOUR DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY if you think that you might be getting the flu!
Also, if you think that you are getting a COLD, as soon as the symptoms appear, you can use Zicam (a nasal gel - not nasty at all) or Cold-ezze (lozenges- kind of nasty tasting - but they work!) . They are both Zinc products and REALLY help to lessen the symptoms and shorten the duration of a cold - IF they are started right away. So these are something that you want to keep in your medicine chest so that you have them on hand when needed.
Also, as we all know, frequent hand washing is our best DEFENSE against getting these viruses. Sooooo wash your hands whenever you think about it!
Hope that this helps someone!
Stay Healthy Everyone!
Edited to add the names of 2 of the drugs for flu - Relenza and Tamiflu. Here is a link to information on Tamiflu and telling the difference between a cold and flu. http://www.chemist.co.nz/pm/tamiFlu.cfm
It is noted that this drug must be started within 48 hours of the start of symptoms to be effective. So call your doctor right away!!!
