With all the airline trouble over seas. Do you feel like drving is a better option?

WE are planning a last minute trip to Disney. I love to fly. The idea of driving 18 hours makes me uneasy. But with all the current issues. I think I am skipping flying. This way we will have our own minivan and no rental needed. . The nearest airport is 2 hours or more away anyway. So by the time we drive there, it is almost 8 to 9 hours till we get to Disney anyway. The entire situations of flights missing and going down. Is bothering me. Even though it's on the other side of the globe. Anyone else feel the same?

Not at all. One plane was shot down by Russian missiles. The other was lost by a foreign carrier. USA airlines have impeccable safety records and I would not have any problems flying unless planes over the US started getting shot down or lost. What's happening in eastern Europe and Africa have no relationship to here.

We're flying to California in November. But do whatever makes you most comfortable.

None of the incidents involved US airlines. I would feel safe on a US airline, there has not been an accident in a long time. Driving is more dangerous. Almost everyday the local news has someone killed in an auto accident.

Seriously? I'd think twice about going to any area of unrest but travel over North America, not an issue.

Nope. Driving 16-18 hours from Philly to Orlando, I'm FAR more likely to fall asleep at the wheel, have a blowout at 70 MPH, hit a deer, etc. than have a problem on a plane. I think the odds of being shot down by Russian extremists is about the same as winning the Powerball! :)

I'll take 2 1/2 hours of uncomfortable flying over 18 hours of driving every time...

Despite the three air disasters in a week, flying is still much safer than driving. The first flight was shot down in a war zone (no, we are nowhere close to a war zone). The other two crashed during bad weather. I think American pilots are experienced enough to either fly in bad weather, or if the weather is too bad to land, maybe land in an alternative airport (e.g. Tampa or Jacksonville rather than Orlando).

That said, I still rather drive. As you said, flying still takes a good chunk out of your day. In my case, I live about 15 hours from WDW and live about a half hour from the airport. Allowing a half hour to get to the airport, the necessary two hours before the flight for checking luggage and security, the two hour flight to Orlando, the half hour waiting for luggage and the half hour ride to the resort...that's 5.5 hours. And that's flying out of Cincinnati, the second-most expensive airport.

Not really. But I flew to Germany as soon as flights resumed after 9/11. Flying is way safer than driving. Plus, when it's my time, it's my time, so I had better enjoy it while I can.

However, I hate the new hassles of flying. I really only liked to be groped by my husband, and since he doesn't work for TSA, it can be uncomfortable.

hundreds of people are killed everyday in car accidents. It is the equivalent of having a plane crash everyday. Why do we tolerate the high death toll from driving? Those self driving cars can't come soon enough. Will cut the death toll from driving to close to zero.

My news has been filled with deadly accidents. Started with the Tracey Morgan crash in the turnpike. A few days later, also in NJ, another truck was involved in a deadly crash. The past two weeks, a local cop was running radar, truck crashed into and killed him, and a guy in a local highway killed in stop and go traffic on his motorcycle.

We were supposed to drive, but ended up having to fly. I said to my husband, I'm usually nervous about flying, but seeing the news stories about people dying every week this summer on the road, makes me so happy we aren't driving!

I don't intend for this to be mean, but I think fears like this are irrational. It is time to turn off the news. They sensationalize everything. There is "danger" anywhere and anything can happen at anytime. Statistically planes are WAY safer than cars, yet we get into our cars daily without all-encompassing fear.

I truly mean this in the nicest way, but you have to live your life without constantly looking over your shoulder waiting for your death. Drive if it makes you happy, fly if it makes you happy, but just realize that you cannot control everything and focus on living your life and not being coxed into fear by sensationalism.

We flew to DC on 9/18/01.

I hate hate hate that these planes have crashed or been blown up. DH was in Scotland when the (second) Air Malaysia plane "incident" happened. At one point he was on the train and went through Lockerbie. Shudder. DH had to fly home on Friday.

I hope that the pilots can be smart enough to not fly over active warzones going forward.

And while it's no normal person's wish to be on a plane that flat out disappears or is blown up or crashes for any reason....statistically it's still a lot safer than getting on the road to go to the grocery store.

An 18 hour drive is a LONG LONG drive with lots and lots of people. Look at the crash that happened in CA with the prospective college students and the FedEx truck. Awful.

Danger is everywhere. Try to enjoy yourself.

And hope pilots don't route you over war zones. Sigh.
