Wishes 10/8/11 WP/GF-- Love's First Kiss-- Trip Report Complete

I want to stay at GF Club level so badly. Even if it's for 2 nights! It's on my Disney bucket list! ;D

Rainy days are never fun in the parks. Thankfully MK is the place to be though. Plenty of shops to hop through during the rain and hide away from the droplets! lol.

Can't wait to read more.

Great little videos, Michelle sweetie!!! Really gives you the sense of excitement on the wedding morning!!! Well done!!

Thank you! I'm so happy we have a couple of videos. I tried to soak everything in on the trip, but as more time passes, I lose little details. We will always have these glimpses though! It makes me really excited to see the actual wedding video.

OMG those videos are sooo cute! :)

I love the wedding morning one! hehe XXX

Thank you! That's one of my favorites. I love the ones where we got both of us in the video. Our cruise video is pretty good too!

Glorious wedding - beautiful bride - handsome groom - such is the stuff dreams are made of! Congratulations!!!

Thank you so much!! It really was a dream come true for us :goodvibes

-GF Club level sounds amazingly fancy and just amazing in general.
-Awesome concierge! That’s so helpful!
-Wow. I have never seen the GF Café that busy. I can’t believe they couldn’t find you a table: you were just a little party of two!
-You DO look so happy!
-We’re also doing the no-contact-with-people-after-the-wedding. Did it work for you? We’re saying goodbye to everyone at breakfast the morning after. (We’re breaking it to have lunch with my grandparents midweek, but that’s only because they’re funny and I never get to see them.)

Club level was so fancy! I'm sure we won't be able to afford it again for several years. And other than my mom, we had no contact at all! It was a great decision. We had all our time to just dote on each other and be sickeningly lovey-dovey :) We both love spending time with family, but we have our whole lives for family trips. It's a wonderful thing to have time for just the two of you, to reflect on the "official" start of your family.

Oh you have to stay at GF club level! I know it's pricey, but it is such a wonderful experience. They really go out of their way to pamper you. As for the rain, I'm generally a poncho-and-bear-it kind of gal, but we didn't feel like it on the honeymoon. Our attitude was do whatever is fun!

I'm usually the same way! =] But totally agree about it being your honeymoon and the attitude about doing whatever is fun!

We were thinking of doing a DisneyMoon. But when we really thought about it, as much as we love love love Disney, we didn't want to be running around constantly from reservation to reservation and line to line. So we decided to go somewhere where we can literally just relax and enjoy each other. Which led us to Saint Lucia. Even though part of me is still trying to get a 3 day minimoon on the way home at Disney! ;D

Oh that sounds so nice! I would have loved a beach honeymoon, too. Brandon isn't the type to just chill-- he gets all antsy and wants to do something! (I don't get it, I could stay poolside all day.) He loves to travel to other countries, but I didn't want to see a new place on the honeymoon because I thought we would exhaust ourselves. Are you staying at a Sandals? We looked into the Grande St Lucian for a while.

I gave myself plenty of time to get dressed for Victoria and Albert's. I took a totally relaxing bubble bath with all my new soaps and things. I always think Disney resort bathrooms are a little lacking, but the bath in ours was really nice. I love wearing fancy clothes. My dress was not new; I had bought it for one of Brandon's law school formals. I was really excited to get to wear it again! I also had my new diamond bracelet that my husband gave me as a wedding gift :goodvibes

Getting to Victoria and Albert's was easy-- ride the elevator two floors down and find the fancy (and exclusive-looking) doors.

I just want to say that I totally agree with you: Peoplemover is one of my favorites too. I think we did it three times in August! (And I really think you should have bought the dress, but I'm an enabler.)

GREAT idea about Basin. I was planning on getting some stuff there anyway, but I am definitely going to buy a new honeymoon lotion and use it every day. Thankfully, we'll be at the GF on the 5th! :)

I'm so looking forward to reading about Victoria and Albert's. DF, unfortunately, is a picky eater, and so I will never get to go there: and being a novice Victorian scholar, that breaks my heart! (He said he would go, but I can't spend that much money on something he wouldn't like.)

Dave isn't either, but he said he'd try it out! ;D I've never left the COUNTRY. So it should be interesting! We wanted to do the Disney cruise, but he's afraid of getting sea sick (he has on boats before). So that got shot out the window.

Yep, we're staying at Sandals! La Toc in Saint Lusica! ;D We were looking at the Grande but it's a smidge more expensive I believe? PLUS we can resort hop to all their resorts in Saint Lucia. Just thinking about it makes me want to start going to the gym! lol

Stepping inside Victoria and Albert’s is an astonishing transformation. The Grand Floridian is already pretty and elegant, but it’s nothing compared to V&A. The lighting is soft and comforting. A harpist, in a floor-length evening gown, plays in the corner. It’s very quiet, with a soft murmur of conversation in the background.

The cast members greeted us very warmly and congratulated us on our marriage. They led us to our table—a pretty round table covered in china and crystal, nestled in the corner of the main dining room. It was perfect, very secluded and intimate. The pulled out our chairs for us, and they even brought me a little foot stool to put my purse on! We settled in and just tried to soak up the atmosphere. It is so incredibly romantic.

Our waiters came by to introduce themselves. Our “head server” (I use quotes because we rarely saw him) was a man whose name I can’t remember, but he was very nice. Our other server, Sharon, took care of us for most of the evening. She was beyond wonderful. Brandon and I had worried a little that we would feel out of place at V&A—we weren’t sure if we would be treated differently because of our age. That was absolutely not the case. Sharon made us feel totally at ease. She was gracious and never haughty.

She gave us our menus. They are presented to you folded

menufront.jpg

I was ecstatic. It was the first time I’d seen my new name in print!

The menus are personalized on the inside, too.

And you have lots of options for your meal!

While we were pondering the menu, our servers brought us two plates of caviar and a bottle of Dom Perignon, with a note.

I'm sure anyone reading has noticed that my father was not present at the wedding. Without going into too much detail, my parents divorced when I was very young and I haven't seen my father much in my life. We are not close, but are working on building a relationship as adults. He was not invited to the wedding because there is far too much tension between him and my family. Anyway, the note said,

"Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Huffman, Love Dad"

I didn't even tell him we were going to V&A. I was very impressed, grateful, and happy that he had put forth the effort.

I was so excited-- I LOVE caviar! I don't get to have it very much, because of the price, and I had certainly never had any this nice before-- Osetra caviar. It was served with blini, creme fraiche, a very pretty hardboiled egg, and some type of stuffed olive. Each plate came with a pearl spoon so as not to corrupt the caviar's taste. We tried all of the different garnishes, although my favorite was to very slowly eat a few eggs by themselves. The taste was exquisite.

And of course, the Dom Perignon was fabulous!

Brandon loved taking pictures of all the food. Sharon had already told us to take as many pictures as we wanted.

Your report of V&A is absolutely breath taking. I feel like I'm there. haha. It sounds so incredibly romantic. It's definitely a must when we go in 2013. Even if I somehow get a reservation for David and myself. Or for my parents. But I'd definitely have to for-warn about dress.

I've never had caviar before. What's it taste like? hehe.

That's incredibly sweet of your father to do something like that. Without even knowing. It's kind of amazing how that happened.

Yay. I can't wait to see more pictures.

You look beautiful!

After we had had time to enjoy our Champagne and caviar, Sharon came by to take our dinner selections. In the main dining room, you have 7 courses, with choices for each except the amuse-bouche. We also said that we would like to see a wine list, for something to accompany our entree.

They brought the amuse-bouche next. It is the only thing I don't have a picture of. I can't remember exactly what it was-- three or four little things to taste.

I thought there was the perfect amount of time between courses. We always had a few minutes after we had finished to talk, sip our drinks, and digest a bit. V&A is undoubtedly expensive, BUT you do get quite a lot of food! It was nice to have time inbetween courses to relax and truly enjoy the evening.

For the second course, we both picked "Heirloom Tomatoes, Gulf Shrimp and Burrata Cheese with Yellow Tomato Gazpacho".

IMG_6146.jpg

Those black things are squind-ink croutons. They don't taste like squid, I think it just gives the color! The gazpacho was delicious! I especially love yellow tomatoes. When I can find them at our market, I just cut them up and eat them raw. I had never had them prepared before-- it was great!

Next came the third course.

I had "Diver Scallop with Braised Fennel and Blood Orange Gastrique".

IMG_6153.jpg

It was a very interesting taste combination. The scallop, fennel, and orange were all sweet, but in different ways. This was the thing I was most excited for at V&A-- intriguing food combinations. I love watching cooking shows, like Iron Chef America or Chopped, but I feel like it's difficult to find restaurants that cook with that type of innovativeness in smaller American towns. It was fun to experience that type of cuisine.

Brandon had "Wild Turbot with Toasted Capers and Preserved Lemon".

IMG_6159.jpg

The turbot was overnighted from France (ooh la la!). Brandon is not generally a seafood fan, but he loved this dish. We always tasted each other's when we got different dishes, and the turbot really was outstanding.

Next, the fourth course.

I had "Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Tortellini".

IMG_6164.jpg

It was so neat. They presented the bowl with just the solid foods, then the liquid was poured from a small pitcher. I can't remember what those little shavings were, but I loved the soup! In case you haven't noticed, I'm a huge soup fan! I was starting to feel a little full, though, so I ate slowly.

Brandon had "Roasted Quail with Asian Pears and Serrano Ham Jus".

Michelle,

What a fabulous start to your honeymoon. V&A looks amazing! Maybe someday I can talk Paul into it.

That is awesome that your Dad sent you that surprise. Nice touch.

We stayed GF Sugarloaf Concierge for our site visit and loved it! I am not sure we can go back to regular rooms (other than our DVC stays) now. They really do spoil you.

I laughed about the comment about Brandon and the beach vacation. We didn't think it was for us either until we went to Aruba last year and did nothing for a week. We loved it so much we are going back for 2!

Love the lotion idea. Fabulous! Happy New Year!

Looking forward to the rest of the courses and the rest of the honeymoon.

After our fourth course, the sommelier stopped by to talk about wines. His name was Curtis, and he is usually the sommelier at Citricos. I guess he was filling in for someone that night. Anyway, he talked about the kinds of wines that would pair well with our entree (we both ordered the same thing, which made pairing simpler). Curtis also told us some general information about the wines and liquors at V&A. It was really interesting. He told us about certain bottles they had, of which there were only ten or so in the world. He talked about why he likes working with vintage wines. He told a story about one bottle in particular they had that was over one hundred years old and French. He said he always likes to think about what that bottle went through to reach Orlando in 2011. Did it get misplaced in a cellar for several years? Where was it during WWII? I had never thought about wine like that before. I could have listened to Curtis for hours; his expertise was truly fascinating.

Brandon selected a red Bordeaux. Our wine was not cheap (to us), but was not even close to the most expensive on the list. They had bottles of wine that were several thousand dollars each! Wowzer!

Curtis brought our wine to the table. Then he went through this very ritual-like process of pouring the wine to sample. First he lit a tall taper candle. Then, over the flame, he very slowly poured all of the wine into a decanter.

Next, he poured a small bit of wine into a glass. He swirled the wine gently around in the glass. Then, again over the flame, he transfered that wine from the first glass to a second glass. He emptied both glasses, then poured wine from the decanter into each glass.

This was so interesting to watch, I asked Curtis what the purpose was. He said the slight heat from the candle helps to draw minor notes out of the wine. The reason he poured the wine into the glasses, then discarded that wine, was to "prime" the glasses. He said glasses can carry residue (from detergents or polish) that impurify the taste of fine wines. By coating the glasses with a bit of wine, you are sure to taste only the wine, in its exact state. We learned so much from Curtis, we absolutely loved talking to him!

IMG_6169.jpg

IMG_6171.jpg

The wine was fantastic! I really enjoy having a good glass of wine, but I have no talent for picking a good wine. Brandon did a great job!

IMG_6173.jpg

(After dinner, V&A packaged the empty bottle for us to take with us!) I would love to buy the same wine for our anniversary, I bet it wouldn't be as expensive outside of Disney World.

I know I"m joining in a little late but I've just caught up on your PJ/TR.

Congratulations on a very beautiful wedding!! I have loved reading about your big day, it's so nice to see such a happy couple! I think the weather made for some great, and unique, photos too.

I'm really enjoying your V&A review, as we are hoping to have dinner there on the night of our wedding. Looking forward to the next update!

Your report of V&A has me at the edge of my seat! A strange thing, but I absolutely love reading about dining experiences at the fancy Disney restaurants, especially V&A. Your experience sounds absolutely amazing so far, I can't wait to read more!

I wish I had bought the dress! I have non-shopper's remorse :guilty: Aww, that's a bummer that Chris wouldn't like V&A. It is sooooo good! (And it seems very you ;)) I don't know how picky he is, but V&A will accommodate preferences, like we don't eat duck products of any kind, so none of our options included duck. They also have a vegetarian menu. Obviously it wouldn't help if he's a strictly burger and fries type of guy!

I hope you'll post pictures of your honeymoon, I would love to see them! And it's your first international trip, how exciting! Brandon and I both love to see new places; we're holding off on kids mainly because there are so many countries we want to see first! And V&A is romantic, we just loved it! You absolutely have to go! I hope we can go again, maybe for our five or ten year anniversary. Caviar is a little salty and has a very mild fish-like tase (I don't want to say "fishy" because that has such a negative connotation). It's unique and definitely worth a try!

Michelle,

Looking forward to the rest of the courses and the rest of the honeymoon.

V&A was perfect! I can't think of a better way to have started our married life; it was the ultimate splurge. And I know what you mean about concierge, how will we go back to regular rooms? We will have to, at least for a few years, until Brandon gets some more lawyer-ing done! A week in Aruba sounds amazing!! I think I can talk Brandon into a beach week one of these days...

I know I"m joining in a little late but I've just caught up on your PJ/TR.

Thank you for reading! Yes, I know the weather wasn't ideal, but it really turned out fine for us. It was definitely worth it to me to have my romantic, candlelit ceremony. V&A would be fantastic for a wedding night! They really will make you feel so special!

Your report of V&A has me at the edge of my seat! A strange thing, but I absolutely love reading about dining experiences at the fancy Disney restaurants, especially V&A. Your experience sounds absolutely amazing so far, I can't wait to read more!

I love reading dining reports too! I would probably rather eat than do anything else. I'm almost always munching on something. I get hungry just writing about V&A! Thanks for reading!

I LOVE this detailed review. It feels like I'm there with you. And that soup looks amazzzzzzzinggggg. :lovestruc

I also think it was nice of your dad to include the champagne and caviar. :)
