So who, if anyone, is doing their first FULL Marathon ever at WDW? :cool1:
I wanted to start a support area for us - to talk about training, moan, cheer and commiserate until the day we cross that finish line and get that MICKEY medal!:earsboy:

Who wants to join in?

A bit about me: (for those who don't know)
I am a Half Fanatic who has completed 18 Half Marathons since January 2007. I completed that first Half aprox 7 month after a big toe joint clean out from degenerative osteoarthritis.
I just had to have this same procedure in April along with a osteotomy (break the metatarsal bone and pin it back in place to realign the bone) and so I figure this is a good time to do a FULL marathon.
I was originally a racewalker only, but have moved on to doing Galloway 2 min racewalk with a 1 min jog. This so far seems to work well for me as far as comfort go.
I have a 16 miler scheduled for tomorrow. So far my 13.10 and my 14 milers have been done in the sprinkling rain down here in SE FLorida. It seems weird to be doing.

WDW Marathon 2012 will be my first (and I think my last).
Me...I was a walker for years and then Christmas 2007 my oldest DS was home from college and asked why I never ran and said I should try so I got on the TM and ran 7 miles :scared1:....I was at Disney in Jan '08 and saw a Minnie Marathon thing ( 15K) and thought it would be fun for DH and I to go, enjoy the Garden Festival at Epcot and I could run. We did it and it was fun. Then they decided no more Minnie Marathon, but Princess Half so DDs and I decided to make it a girls weekend, we did and it was fun. And so on...I have had some "injuries" and life events along the way that have kept me from trying the full, but now at 50 years young, it is my time.
Monday I will go the distance of 17 miles, another first, but I think I'm ready. This event has taken over my life...I have done much research on nutrition and finding what works pre-workout and during long runs and refueling after.
I think, a full takes much more effort than a half...the weekly runs/walks are a lot longer and nutrition for me is much more important.

This will be my first marathon -hopefully not my last! I signed up as a bucket list thing when I hit a birthday milestone and to make sure I couldn't back out once I paid the $$. I had to switch from the Galloway plan to the MFM one due to well, life :). I have to say though, that after being a BIG skeptic of the whole run/walk thing, it has worked for me so far. This board has been a great help in keeping me motivated through my training rut as I changed plans, but still am looking forward to January and my preview run there in a few weeks. :thumbsup2

My husband will be running his first full at Disney in January. He has ran several 1/2s. He is up to 15 miles. He is running his PR as just runs so he is hoping to break 4 hours for the full.

So Joan and Mallen - how did your miles go this weekend?

My 16 miles was an accomplishment in and of itself. I was having hip flexor issues, right periformis talking to me and the ball of my right (Frankentoe) foot. So I got it done even with having to stop my joggin intervals for about 2 1/2 miles of it.
I did do a soak in a cold pool and then an ice bath and I think it helped. Today I am only a bit tight in my hamstrings.
I just kept telling myself I could NOT quite or give in to the voices in my head.

Joan - I agree that doing a full seems to take up more of my time and just takes more effort in doing the whole training thing. I too had this as a bucket list item so with an issue like degenerative osteoarthritis (which doesn't get better, just keeps reoccuring) I figured now was the time.

I'll be running my first full ( and also my first Goofy) in January. I'm super psyched. I had been training for the Myrtle Beach Half and couple weeks before that race decided on doing the full at Disney. Because I was a little late deciding to do this I am a little behind on training. So far my longest run has been 14 miles but I felt great afterwards. I'm planning on enjoying the full rather than racing it. I really want to ride Everest during the race.

Iamtrike or should I say superman. A half followed the next day with a full. Have fun on EE...that is one ride I just don't need to do ever again.

Tracy Hope you are able to get your LR's in without much pain. I think the ice bath helps as I did it after my 16 miler two weeks ago and was fine the next day. And good for you, for ignoring the voices in your head. So what did you do for hydration and nutrition? And when is your next LR and how far?

mallen Hope your training is going well.

AFM-These new distances are hard. I worked all weekend on my nutrition so that I would be ready for today. The plan was to put on a couple pounds by eating lots of complex carbs, low fat, and hydrating. I think I did a good job, but didn't gain any weight. About 3 hours before the run, I ate an oven baked french toast english muffin, a banana, 4 oz. of juice, 12 oz. propel and cup of coffee. I ate half a special k cereal bar on the way out the door. I took my handheld with sports beans. I had a 6 mile loop going past my house so I left a bottle of water to refill my handheld and an odwalla blueberry swirl bar cut in thirds. Leaving the water and food worked well. I went out fast (9:04 mile) but didn't feel that I was going so fast (that"s fast for me). the first 15 miles went well and 16 wasn't bad, but last 2 were hard, but I did it in 3:07. I took an ice bath once home and feel like my outer thighs may be sore tomorrow. Next LR 11/14, 20 miles.

Just wanted to add: When I got in from my 18 miles I had another 12 oz of propel and a 8 oz container of greek yogurt mixed with a scoop of protein powder and some juice.

I'm also doing my first full (and Goofy) in January too. Glad to hear I'm not the only crazy person to go Goofy on a first full. I've done 4 halfs and decided last year that 2012 was the year I'd finally do the full distance. I originally signed up for just the full, but got a brain storm recently and swithced to Goofy. I was dealing with a terrible cold during one of my 10 mile runs. I decided to just do what I could to get the mileage in. I took a lot of walk breaks and was about 2 mins/mile slower than normal, but I noticed the next day that I wasn't sore at all and could hardly tell that I'd run. So, I decided if I used the same strategy for the half, I might be able to go Goofy. And the really crazy part is that the Goofy scares me less than doing just the full. I think because of the extra distance, I've mentally and emotionally given myself permission to be really slow, so I'm feeling genuine excitement instead of the fear I had when it was just the full.

Mickey will be my first full. I did the Disney half in Jan 2010. Since then I've done a few others and feel ready to double down.

I'm a run/walk girl. Most of my training is 3/1.

Tick. Tock. 14 miles this weekend.

Ronda

Training had to wait until Monday, but was able to get around 5 in between work and taking the kiddos trick or treating. Looking forward to the long this weekend, weather looks great for an evening run.

Joan, my typical Half mileage routine would be to have some kind of carbs and a bit of protein the night before. Drink some water in the morning (not too much or I get that sloshing thing) and I eat a pop tart - has always worked so I don't change it, plus I can't eat too much early in the morning, my stomach/gut do NOT like it. I do 2 sports beans around mile5-6 and then a GU around mile 9 and usually that works. I take water with me and during a race I alternate water and powerade at the stations to mix it up a bit.
So far for this FULL training I drink a 12oz g2 or powerade zero the day before and water. I have carbs and some protein the night before. That morning I drink some water, have my pop tart and then I take water with me in my camelpack waist pack. I know have the beans around mile 5, Gu at 8, then beans at around12 and then a GU again at 14. After getting home I ice bath and stretch. I eat breakfast and have lowfat chocolate milk (for a protein to help recover) and make sure I drink another 12oz G2 or Powerade by the end of the day. I am also using my Zenzahs compressions afterwards to help.
Seems to work so far.

That would be me! Doing my first full (and Goofy).

I started running in the summer of 2010, in preparation of the 2011 princess half. I have done a total of 3 halfs, and I'm doing the R&R Vegas next month. I plan to walk/run the half. Just enough to finish under 3:30. Then run/walk the full. Hopefully I can do it in under 6 hours.

This weekend is the 8.5mile/20mile weekend for me. I'm fighting the start of shin splints. I just need to hold on another 9 1/2 weeks!

I'm in exactly the same boat. My race pace is typically about 8:30 MM for a half. I'll be run/walking the half with my wife at about a 12MM pace and will probably take the full at a 10MM pace. I think I'd be really nervous if I were planning on racing one of the races, but my goal is just to enjoy both runs and take time to get character photos etc so I'm excited not nervous. (that may change as we get closer to Jan though)

This weekend I'll be running doing a 7 Mile and a 15.5 mile run. Its getting harder to get my long run in before church on Sunday.

I hope your shins hold up. I've heard the R&R races are great, will this be your first one?

WDW Marathon 2012 will be my first (and I think my last).
Never say never! After I did my first marathon in 2008 (Disney), I swore that would be my one and only. Two years later I had to try it again - as part of Goofy's 5th year anniversary. Yikes! And now, I'm in training for my third (non-Disney this time). When will I ever learn to say no! :rolleyes1

Good luck with your training! See all of you in January! Woohoo! :cheer2:

January will be my first full also. My last half was in 1986, so it'll be interesting to see how my body handles the full distance. After 20 years without much running, I've been back at it for a year now. Have done 17 miles so far and will do 18 on Friday after some (hopefully all) of our 9 inches of snow melts from my running trail. Good luck to all the other first timers!

Dave

I'm running my first full in January!
My first half was January, 2011 at Disney. I have now finished 3 half marathons this year. My last half was in early October. The whole month of October was a disaster for me - my son was hospitalized, our boiler broke, my dog was diagnosed with cancer, and then I hurt my back - so I'm slowly trying to get back on track. Some days I think I should just try to do a half in January but I know I'll be disappointed. My goal at this point is to just finish - in any way I can!

Yes, my first R&R. I did the princess, then a small local 1/2 in May, then Quad Cities in September. I'm really excited!

Glad to see some First FULL Marathoners out there.:cool1:
I am on a break between my 16 and my 18 milers. I am heading for WDW this weekend and it will be a quick trip with not much time for an 18 miler going around Pop Century (and I am more on the slow side), so I did 10 this weekend and then around 8 this and then back to my 18. I have the Spacecoast half Marathon the week after as a drop back week, then a 20,10,22,8,10 and the WDW!!!

Keep at it peeps, we can do this!!

I had a drop back week...12 miles yesterday and it was ok. Mentally never felt good and physically either, but it is done and instead of my bike ride today I am going to play golf. Mid November and 70's, I have to take advantage of it and then yard work later today.

Tracy I'm thinking I should write the Pop Tart company about the new breakfast of champions. Maybe you could be their spokes person! :woohoo:

Susie I really don't think there is another full in my future. This really is much harder than child birth....after my first child I said no more, but still had three more (all great young adults now).

Welcome to Amanda and Dave and anyone I missed.
