WISH Wellness Awesome October Challenge

Just stopping by to post my results for week 1...

5/7
Honestly, it's better than I expected.

Dairy will be a tough one for me, for several reasons, so I'm not expecting to get 2 servings more than once or twice. I know that there are several factors that prevent me from getting a lot of dairy and those aren't going to change, and I'm okay with that. Dairy really isn't a priority for me, and I don't think it needs to be at this point in time.

I'll be back hopefully soon to check in more and see how everyone is doing.

Will try to catch up on reading tonight. I have had a few blah days and now TOM starting up. Sure ready for this week to get over with.

I treated myself to a bit of a 25 lbs lost reward tonight and purchased some new nail clippers(mine were dull and not cutting well) when I noticed my nails have gotten super long I thought I should get new ones but I also got myself a new buffer so now all trimmed, filed and buffed super shiny and pretty. I like the length and they are strong but I tend to break one too easy. Eventually I may work on learning guitar chords again and that would require trimming them even shorter.

My walking plan fizzled a bit but I'll get back to it. I'm gonna work up to hour long walks. I know I can handle that. The weather is so nice in mornings when I wake up early enough. I've been sleeping till noon the past few days.

Pam, congratulations to your DD! Where would they go for the class abroad? I will keep my fingers crossed that she gets the scholarship. It sounds like a great opportunity!

They study the Panama Canal area and the ecosystem and biodiversity and how it has changed since the two oceans were connected. She has two meetings set up today to talk to people at school about it before making her final decision.

Also, good luck with all the school work you are in for now! Did they just completely lose one teacher? What kind of subjects are you teaching?

It really changes every day.... yesterday was 1st grade (so mostly 6 year olds).... math, reading, and some social studies. Today I am a 3rd grade "Inclusion Facilitator".... basically helping kids that are lagging behind get extra help with reading and math. I'll probably have small groups come to me throughout the day.

Molly, I love your Halloween picture!! Seems like you had fun at the party!

Lisa, what you said about coming short of your 5 a day because of change of dinner plans, is exactly what happened to me on Friday. And I agree that it is something to work on. I really liked Pam's approach of having veggies with every meal including breakfast. That inspired me today to have some carrots for breakfast. Most likely only half a serving, but every ounce counts! :thumbsup2

Glad you liked the idea. Today will be a carrot stick day for me because I'm having yogurt instead of a smoothie or omelet.

My final report for the challenge is 6/7. I missed Friday because I decided to have fun with friends at the fair. I still got 4.5 servings, and if I would count the battered and fried onion (kind of like in an onion ring) I could maybe justify that it was 5 servings, but not with a good conscience. AS I said in response to Lisa, one thing I learned is to try to get your veggies and fruits in early in the day as you never know what might deviate you from your plan. The challenge truly inspired me to add more vegetables to my meals and even use them as a snack. The other day I snacked on a bowl of steamed (in the microwave) broccoli that I seasoned with a spice mix that is supposed to go into salad dressings. It was delicious!

That sounds really good!!

The new challenge will be more difficult for me, even though I have taken to eat more dairy recently in my effort to get more protein. But dairy has points and it is not my favourite thing to use points on... :rolleyes1 So, we will see how this goes. I think it will inspire me to come up with more inventive ideas on how to incorporate dairy into my diet... And I might use this week to eat some nice cheese! :thumbsup2

Mmmmm... CHEESE!:thumbsup2

And as promised, here something on the Halloween question:

Since it is not celebrated in Germany (however, it is starting to come over from the US in recent years), I was always fascinated with Halloween. I like pumpkin decorations! But I don't like the gore aspects of it.

In 2007 we were at DLP during October and the park there was decorated for Halloween. It was really nice! On Main Street they had "Pumpkin Men" as a theme and in Frontierland it was all about some witches. Sorry, I did not get any good pictures of the decorations. Since then they have changed the decor and it is more a harvest theme (supposedly, haven't been back in the fall).

Then, in 2011 my sister and I were at WDW in October and we went to the Halloween Party and had a lot of fun. I really loved the trick or treating because that is something I had never done as a kid! I also loved the parade and the fireworks were spectacular! Not sure I would want to pay for the party every year, but once in a while, it is really neat! We did not dress up, but got lovely pumpkin Mickey Ears:

Great picture!! Love the ears!

Maybe you could personalize the challenge for yourself and make it two servings of something else??? Or change it to making sure you get your calcium and D supplement every day??

I'll bet your hands look so pretty now! Lucky you with the nice strong nails. Mine are definitely better than they were when I was younger (maybe because I eat healthier??), but I keep them pretty short and plain most of the time.

We've had some lovely walking weather lately! I'm trying to enjoy it because VERY SOON it will be too miserable to walk outside!

******************

Morning all! I have one minute before I must dash out the door! Just wanted to pop in and say hello! I probably will not have computer access today, so don't expect to hear from me until at least late afternoon. I am having a big serving of greek yogurt for breakfast and have already taken my calcium and D supplements (plus milk in my coffee), so I am calling myself 2/2 for the day!

TTYL.........................P

Dairy isn't quite as easy for me as fruits and veggies..... but I don't do too badly. I eat nonfat greek yogurt for breakfast at least 3 days a week, I put skim milk in my coffee, and I do eat cheese (usually lowfat). But for my smoothies and in oatmeal I use almond milk, so that doesn't count. This morning's two cups of coffee could probably count as a 1/4 - 1/2 serving because I do put skim in.... and then my serving will be my WW cheese stick I will have for snack on my way to my meeting tonight. I guess I'll have to be sure to get in another 1/2+ serving before bed. Maybe I'll have yogurt for dinner, since I didn't leave my self anything special. I do take calcium and D supplements (when I remember ), so I don't worry particularly much about getting in my cow's milk.... in fact, I actually try NOT to drink/eat much beyond the milk in my coffee and my yogurt.

Happy Tuesday all! I'm at work today with a great 1st grade class. They have been super well behaved. Certainly makes my day easier!

Well.... DD got accepted for a "class abroad" over winter break! This is a huge thing because they only accept 10 students and they usually only accept Juniors and Seniors. The cost is the biggest problem.... approximately $4000.... this would include the class, diving, room and board and other travel expenses. She has applied for a small scholarship that would pay for part of this (less than half). Guess she is waiting to see if she gets that before she gets too excited. We could definitely scrape together the money. But I guess I'll be looking into a part-time job in the evenings between now and Christmas. :rolleyes1 Or my WW members better buy a LOT of products in the very near future!!:lmao: If I could only find a job that pays $100/hr, I could earn what she needs in one week!!:rotfl:

I think I'll spend some time digging up some more stuff to sell this week. Every penny counts, right??

My school has an early release day Thursday and no school Friday or Monday! DS DOES have school that day at the high school. I am picking up DD that day to bring her home for the long weekend (she has Monday off).

Okay.... off to check the Budget Board and figure out how to earn $4,000 in the next 6 weeks!!:thumbsup2 ...........................P

How exciting for your DD to be invited to study abroad, Pamela! Too bad they don't give you more notice so you could have been saving up for awhile but I have faith that you will think of something! pixiedust:

Sounds like you are already doing well on the dairy challenge! :thumbsup2

Pam, congratulations to your DD! Where would they go for the class abroad? I will keep my fingers crossed that she gets the scholarship. It sounds like a great opportunity! I think your strategy of getting those servings in as early in the day as you can is spot on, Magdalene, especially as we start this new challenge. :thumbsup2

Your broccoli sounds delicious! I'm glad that the challenge really inspired you to make some great changes. :cool2:

Love the picture of you and your DS, Magdalene! The pumpkin ears are very cute.

Did you have your names sewn on the Mickey ears? That was my job when I worked at Disneyland many many years ago. :rotfl:

Feel free to modify the challenge to work for you. :goodvibes Maybe as Pamela suggested try to get in your calcium instead. :thumbsup2 Your body needs those important nutrients -- the how doesn't matter as much as whether it is done. ::yes::

Will try to catch up on reading tonight. I have had a few blah days and now TOM starting up. Sure ready for this week to get over with.

:woohoo: on 25 pounds gone, Melissa! :yay: Congratulations! You will be hitting your mini-goal very soon now!

I've updated with the results that I've seen so far -- feel free to post how you did on the first week's challenge if you haven't already.

Well, the first challenge is over. I did my best, but I didn't hit 7/7. I did manage to get 4/7. I think that the dairy challenge may be a little easier for me.

Just stopping by quickly again ... I've got a cold and can't really concentrate on anything, I just wanted to share what I'm doing instead of dairy:

I think what I'm going to do for the week (instead of dairy) is 2 servings of foods high in calcium, and remembering to take my Vitamin D.

So far today I've had orange juice with calcium, 1/2 cup almonds for snack, & I may have yogurt for lunch. I usually take my Vitamin D with lunch, so if I remember my vitamin D and get another 1/2 serving of calcium, I'm good.

I'll be off the computer for a few days, but hopefully Sunday I'll have some time to stop in and chat.

I made 5/7 been eating salads every day sometimes twice a day. Lots of servings in them because I put tons of goodies like radishes and cherub tomatoes.

Lisa - what a cool job to have at DL!! Yes, I had my name on them, as did my sister. Those are actually the first and only ears that I ever bought. I won ears while I was at WDW during the One Million Dreams promotion, but they were rather cheesy. I love my pumpkin ears!! :thumbsup2 I do have a fancy Minnie pirate ear band (not a hat) though that I bought to wear for Pirate Night on the cruise!

Pam - that sounds like a fascinating trip for your DD! I just cruised through the Panama Canal in May and I found it fascinating, especially that for a large part, the Canal is not a Canal but a reservoir, Gatun Lake. And it was so beautiful there! But I kept wondering what all that heavy ship traffic was doing to the ecosystems there.

You got over 50%, so that is an accomplishment! Good luck with

Sorry that you are feeling lousy, hope you feel better soon!

And I think your approach of adding in other foods that are rich in calcium is a great idea! Please keep posting about which foods you choose, it will be interesting to get some input in which other calcium sources there are!

I made 5/7 been eating salads every day sometimes twice a day. Lots of servings in them because I put tons of goodies like radishes and cherub tomatoes.

Well done! And radishes are great to add some spice to your veggies!

---

I had an active day today and despite still being very sore today from doing a Jillian Michael's program (I thought I add in some workouts on my non-run days) on Monday, I went for the mid-week run I had scheduled for myself. I just decided to take it easy and run for half an hour at comfortable speed. And then after I got warmed up, it was so nice and pleasant! Very happy that I made the effort.

Of course I am once again hating the scale... :confused3 At least I do realise that when I am trending upwards, I am trending not as far up as three weeks ago. I guess that is something.

I got in my two servings of dairy today. I think this will be a difficult challenge for me. That's why I do take a calcium supplement on a regular basis. The problem is that I don't want to spend my points on lots of dairy products, there are other things I would rather eat. I probably get one serving on a regular basis. But to get two, I need to change my diet. I might have some dairy with my muesli in the mornings and milk in my coffee and tea during the day (but not a lot), but all portions are small.

However, I can report that I got in my 5 servings of vegetables or fruit today! I am not giving up on this just because the challenge is over! I was getting dinner and realised that I had nothing planned to go with it, so I quickly chopped up a bell pepper and had that while I was preparing dinner. Kept me from snacking before dinner and was healthy!

Oh - and I totally forgot to report another small personal victory: I am someone who always tends to clear my plate if I like the food. Both at lunch and at dinner I was able to stop when I was full and not finish it all off. It wasn't much left over, but it is the principle of being able to stop that made me happy!

Evening all! Just popping on for a quick hello. I won't be making my two servings of dairy today. Other than my yogurt this morning and the milk in my coffee, I haven't had any.... but I did take my calcium and D, so I call that a win!

Dinner tonight was grilled veggie wraps with garlic hummus....one of my new favorite meals! Tonight was grilled zucchini, sauteed mushrooms, sauteed red bell peppers, and carmelized onions plus raw baby spinach. Super delish and I saved some of the extra veggies for a salad tomorrow.

Off to plan tomorrow's work outfit before Survivor starts!.................P

Pamela -- that is fantastic for your DD, prayers for her scholarship :thumbsup2 what country? tell!

Magdalene - another great photo!

Jennstar -- I'm with you...I can report 4/7 for the first weeks challenge. gotta work on thinking of this early in the day not at dinner!

Zoesmama -- are you sporting a new clippie? did you just hit your 25 lb off! :woohoo:

sarahdisney -- I think your plan for getting your faux-dairy is a great one!

ok dairy is going to be hard for me too, I actually try not to eat a lot of dairy, I think it upsets my stomach a lot. I do eat greek yogurt and some cheese, so i'll see how it goes this week.

Happy Thursday everyone! I have a few minutes to spare here while I'm at school, so I can to visit you!:thumbsup2

DD sent a "yes, I be delighted to participate" email to the professor about the Panama trip/class, so we are committed now. Guess I see a lot of extra work days in my future! It's expensive, but the opportunity is amazing!

I had yogurt again for breakfast in an effort to try and get in my two dairy servings.... but I think I'm going to end up stuck at 1 1/2 again today (including the skim milk in my coffee). I really don't think that cow's milk is the best choice for everyone, so it isn't something I really put a conscious effort into consuming. In fact, other than yogurt, skim milk in my coffee, and cheese, I don't do dairy. I use almond milk in my oatmeal and in things that I am baking for myself and DH (DS is allergic though). I choose goat cheese for myself when possible (DH and DS don't like it).

Never got around to making the new quinoa recipe yesterday, so I'm hoping to have time this afternoon when I get home. And when I get a minute I'm ready to share the roasted garlic and cauliflower soup recipe, now that I've tweaked it a bit!

Off to check on the Budget Board..... time to start saving some money so I can send my DD to Panama!...............P

Ok, I blew the first week. I really do have a good excuse.:thumbsup2
And I don't eat a ton of dairy, as it really bothers my stomach, but I should use this challenge to add some dairy substitutes in my diet. But I haven't yet.:)

So not off to a good start this month. My good excuse...we moved! Finally. After years of trying to relocate, my dh took a position in NC (near Charlotte). There have been some major bumps along the way, and we are in an extended stay still, but hopeful that we will find a house soon. And if all else fails, we will go in an apartment, but really trying to avoid that!

Cooking in an extended stay is interesting. There is not an oven, but I brought along my GF and slow cooker. Tonight we are having baked potatoes from the slow cooker.

The biggest thing--I need to plan or I will have a day like today where I consume way too much sugar.

Anyhow, that's my news. I am going to make a solid attempt to keep up with the thread going forward from here.:goodvibes

And I am also going to try to find my scale. I know it is in a box somewhere--we didn't bring that much stuff in the car--but I haven't located it yet.:goodvibes

Coming clean--I am up about 30 pounds from my lowest. sigh. And a minimum of 10 from what I consider ok, but still not great. So I really need to get my head in the game!:)

Happy Friday everyone!!

Once again I feel towards my scale like this: :badpc::badpc::badpc:

The weird thing is that I feel thinner. The clothes fit much better, my father told me yesterday that he can see in my face that I have lost weight. But the scale moved slowly up every day this week and is now 3 pounds above what was the lowest weight last week. It is so frustrating! I wake up really puffy every morning and am sure that quite a bit of that is water weight. At least I don't have to report today's weight and can instead focus on that I am at 2/7 in our challenge.

I am still finding it difficult to incorporate the dairy. Yesterday evening I made some easy pizza (with a tortilla as a base) and topped it with low fat mozzarella. It was nice, but also had quite a lot of points and only possible because I had a lean salad for lunch. I have decided that I need to investigate the dairy portion sizes again. It can't be that I need to use up nearly 1/3 of my daily points for dairy! And that is with low fat dairy!

Pam, congratulations again. It does sound like a fantastic opportunity and I am sure if your DD is hoping to be able to work in that field after she got her degree, all those extra activities will be really helpful for her to build contacts and stand out from others. I hope the Budget Board is going to be helpful with the task of finding the money for it! :goodvibes

Rose, that is wonderful news that you finally are out of the limbo of not knowing what will happen! I hope you find a lovely house soon! And that you will feel at home in the new place!

Morning friends! I'm taking one minute to pop on and say hello before I am on the road for the day. Haven't hit the scale yet, but I'm heading there now and will report back tomorrow.

Have a FABULOUS FRIDAY everyone~........................P

Well, the first challenge is over. I did my best, but I didn't hit 7/7. I did manage to get 4/7. I think that the dairy challenge may be a little easier for me.

:woohoo: Nice job! If it is not something that you regularly do then it takes awhile to develop that habit. Sounds like the dairy will be a good one for you! :cool2:

Those salads are a life saver for the veggie services for sure! :thumbsup2

It was a fun job when I had just started college. Back in the "olden days" we sewed the names on by hand on an old sewing machine that had a handle that moved in a circle -- that was how we "wrote" the names. :earboy2:

Pam - that sounds like a fascinating trip for your DD! Pamela, you would enjoy reading Magdalene's trip report! :cool2: It is really fun and interesting.

Kudos to you, Magdalene, on all the positive changes that you are making! :cool1: I am blaming all problems with week on the full moon myself. ;)

This was a reply I started yesterday and never got to finish. BBL with a new reply. :goodvibes

Sorry that the dairy bothers your stomach, Molli. :flower3: Lot of folks have those problems but like Sarah you do need to figure out alternative ways to get those nutrients.

It is so exciting the DD has this opportunity! pixiedust: for that scholarship!

Congrats on getting through the first part of the big move, Rose! :cool2: You're on the downhill slide now, baby! :yay:

Darn that silly scale! :badpc: Who cares what the number is if you look and feel great?!? :thumbsup2

Morning friends! I'm taking one minute to pop on and say hello before I am on the road for the day. Haven't hit the scale yet, but I'm heading there now and will report back tomorrow.

Have a FABULOUS FRIDAY everyone~........................P

Hope the scale is kind to you! :flower3:

It seems that this week's challenge is a tough one for a lot of us. We know we need these important nutrients but it is hard to get them in. Luckily, I have a little article from sparkpeople.com called 15 Ways to Boost Your Calcium Intake that might help. http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=464

Now I need some help from all of you please. :flower3: There are three Saturdays left in this challenge. Could two people please volunteer to do a Musing for one of these days? I have 10/18 and 10/25 available. I would be very appreciative! ::yes::

WISH Wellness Challenge Musing Saturday, October 11, 2014: Bippity-boppity-boo your fairy godmother has whisked you to ONE Disney park to ride ONE ride -- what did you choose and why? pixiedust:

I would have to chose the Magic Kingdom to ride It's a Small World. It was one of my dad's favorite rides when we went to the parks. He's been gone seven years, but if if my fairy godmother could whisk me away, right now, that is where I would go.

Hi everyone. I have been lurking for the last couple of months and I think it is time that I at least join in the conversation.

My name is Dona and I have not been on the WISH board since May. I am sorry that I never completed the stats in May. I don't know what happened but they just never got done.

I don't know if I am ready for the weight loss of this but I do need the encouragement that I get here.

For those of you who do not know me. I am Dona. I will be 60 next May and a month later I will be retiring from the job I have held for 38 year. I have been a high school math teacher and I am currently teaching Advanced Placement Calculus to most of my classes. I have been married to my college sweetheart for 36 years. He retired last year and just started a part time job to keep himself busy. We have two boys. ds1 is 29 living with his gf and will soon propose (he won't tell us when he is going to do it but we do know he has the ring. We are guessing the beginning of Nov which it the anniversary of when they started dating 11 years ago. They knew each other before that). He is part time teaching, part time handy man at jcpenneys and student going for his Masters in biology, which he will finish in May. Ds2 is 24 and is a student. He just finished his Masters in August and started right up with a full ride for his PHD in Civil Engineering with a concentration in transportation. He and his gf have been dating 4 1/2 years and are also talking marriage but it is a little hard when both of them don't have jobs. She just got one but is Minnesota and he is outside of Philly. We are hoping that it all works out for the both of them.

Dh and I are sandwiched. Our sons are out of the house but we are still dealing with the death of my dad in APril. He was 89 and he lived a good long life. My mom is still around and will be 82 on Thanksgiving. Dh's parents are both still around. His dad is 90 and his mom is in her late 80's. We do have siblings who help out but outside yard work seems to be dh's specialty. He does 3 lawns every two weeks and helps to straighten out his dad's overgrown jungle he calls a yard. So you can see there is a lot going on.

I am hoping to be on here at least once a day. I am trying to cut down on my computer time so that I can be more productive once I get home.

I have a big toss up here. I know I would go to the Magic Kingdom but I am torn between 2 rides.

Tomorrowland Transit since I love to relax on it and view the park. or

Pirates since I have always loved it even before I rode it because I remember seeing it on Wonderful World of Disney just like the Haunted Mansion

Off to finish dinner and get started on breakfasts for tomorrow.

Have a happy and healthy day

Fun question!! If the fairy godmother can take me into the past, I would want to see the original Journey into Imagination at Epcot, please!! With the dreamfinder and figment. It sounds like a wonderful ride and I am really sad that I did not experience the original EPCOT which in the 80s must have been an amazing place!

But if that is not a option, I would please go to Hongkong Disneyland's Mystic Manor. It is a rather new ride that is kind of their version of the Haunted Mansion - but totally different. Here is the official website of the ride: http://park.hongkongdisneyland.com/hkdl/html/mysticpoint/en_US/index.html#/video

It is great that you have such wonderful memories of a place that your father loved so much!

Dona, great to see you back here! I am so sorry for your loss.

Sounds like both your sons are doing very well! Getting a PhD in Engineering is impressive!

I hope we can give you some support to get back into a healthy lifestyle!

Happy Monday everyone! My weekend could have been better, but it was not too bad either. I ended up using more of my weekly points than I wanted. But I was also fairly active. So far I am at 5/7 with the dairy, but it has been a fight and it certainly will not be someting I can sustain while loosing weight and have less points to eat in total. I just don't want to spend nearly a third of my points on dairy!

This week is going to be difficult as I will be travelling for work and eating out a lot. Hopefully I can make sensible choices and stay away from temptations - including a breakfast buffet that is included with my hotel.

At least the scale is getting back to where it already was the week before last. So I am hoping that I can move downwards again soon. No idea what caused that spike last week...
