WISH Away the Pounds July Challenge - Everyone Welcome!!

QOTD: Well, I'm trying not to grab a handful of chocolate covered almonds! If I see myself staring inside the cupboard with the snacks, I make myself turn around and open the fridge. I like to think of myself as a pretty low stress kinda gal, but I'm not sure that's true! ;) It's good that I walk (or used to more before plantar fasciitis). I have two excellent group of friends who always have wonderful advice or shoulders! One group and I always joked that the world couldn't possibly still be spinning because we hadn't walked in a few days!

Weigh In Day!!!

Today is the first Friday, so it is time to send me a PM with your new - hopefully lower - weight.

Please send me your new weight (not how much you lost, I am tracking the current weight in my spreadsheet), preferrably in the subject line with today's date, so it should look something like this: "7/4: 195"

I will be updating the weights at some point over the weekend and the last time on Monday afternoon, so if you forgot to step on the scale this morning, you can always send me your Saturday, Sunday or Monday weight!

And to all my American friends:

Happy Independence Day!!! :cheer2:

I am grumpy - had a really horrible weigh in this morning! I have no idea what happened, but I am up 7 pounds from last Saturday.:confused3

I do know that this can't be a gain in body fat. But it is still depressing... I can feel that I am retaining water and the weather is getting warmer which usually causes that. But the number is still a very scary one!

So, this morning I had a very on point breakfast and I do have a plan for dinner that should work well. So, if I don't go crazy with lunch, this should be a good day. I will try to have very little salt today, hopefully that will help to get rid of the water...

Good morning all! :goodvibes

Caturday-Sam-Eagle1.jpg

Sam Eagle says "Declare your independence from body bashing!" with a little help from sparkpeople.com.

Fat talk. We've all done it. We have all looked in the mirror at one time or another and said negative things about our physical appearance.

In fact, we probably do it so often that we don't even notice it anymore.

We pinch our bellies and grumble about our thighs rubbing together and look at the dimples on the backs of our legs in disgust for years. We say it in our heads, we share it with our girlfriends, and even when our partners complement our bodies, we argue with their assessment. We do it so often that it seems totally normal.

But it's not.

We aren't made to be filled with self-hatred, self-loathing and negative self-talk; yet somehow it has become completely acceptable to be our own worst enemy.

So how can you stop this kind of talk? How can we go from bashing our bodies on a regular basis to thinking more positively and replacing those negative thoughts with loving ones? Start with these four strategies.

1. Recognize that you and your body are completely unique.
You were born with a completely unique genetic makeup and predispositions to certain physical attributes. You can influence some physical characteristics with your lifestyle, but some things simply can't be changed. (Learn more about how your genes affect your jeans size.)

But you know what's really cool? You hit the genetic lottery. Yep, it's true. Every single one of us hit the genetic lottery in something. Maybe you have gorgeous hair, or a stunning smile, or a killer wit. So what if you don't have six-pack abs or "perfect" legs? I can guarantee you have some pretty special qualities.

Maybe it's harder for you to lose fat or gain muscle than your best friend or your co-worker, and that can be frustrating. But maybe they are coveting your awesome squat form or your ability to run 20 sets of bleachers without breaking a sweat.

Action step: Find your own sweet spot where your health, lifestyle, performance and aesthetics intersect. It might not look like anyone else's—and that's just how it should be.

2. Set goals that aren't about losing weight.
For most people, losing body fat is their number one goal related to their health, fitness or appearance. If you have excess fat to lose, that's a great goal to have. However, somewhere along your fat-loss journey you will hit an inevitable and frustrating plateau during which your weight loss stalls or stops completely. This plateau may last a few weeks, or it may last significantly longer than that.

The problem? When your goal is body fat loss, and you're struggling (and sometimes failing) to achieve it, it encourages negative thinking and fat talk. You're constantly focused on what you don't like about your body and how it's not changing. You'll start to think that you're not dedicated enough, not good enough, or not working hard enough.

Setting goals that aren't directly related to fat loss can be much more positive and encouraging (and psst: they often lead to fat loss indirectly!). Plus, it's good to focus on something other than weight, especially if you tend to obsess or get down about what the scale says.

Action step: Choose one short-term goal (2-3 months away) and one long-term goal (6-12 months away) that aren't about weight, and commit to them fully. When you've achieved them, acknowledge that you've achieved them and allow yourself to feel very proud.

3. Stop and ask yourself, "Would I say that to someone I love?"
You've probably heard the saying, "We are our own worst critics," and it's so true. We say things to ourselves that we would never ever say to someone we love.

We tell ourselves that we are fat, disgusting, gross, worthless, and hopeless. We tell ourselves that we will never achieve our goals, that we quit everything we start, that we aren't worthy of being happy or loved.

It rarely sounds crazy or mean in our own heads, but when we see it in writing, it's easier to understand just how harmful that self-talk can be. With that kind of feedback, how could anyone succeed?

Action step: Start becoming more aware of your thoughts and internal monologue. Next time you catch yourself saying something negative to yourself, ask: Would you say that to your mother? Your sister? Your best friend? Your daughter? If the answer is no, then do not say it to yourself.

Develop a positive mantra that you can repeat to yourself until the negative thoughts are replaced with positive thoughts. Something as simple as, "I am beautiful and worthy," works perfectly.

4. Recognize that your thoughts and words impact everyone around you.
It's very easy to forget how much we affect the people around us. This is especially true with impressionable young children (especially girls). Some research shows that girls as young as five years old already have body dissatisfaction and express a desire to be thinner.

Where do they get these ideas? Sure, there are societal and media influences even at that age, but most often, they hear others (including their moms, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, etc.) talk negatively about their own bodies. Those flippant comments you make about your thighs, the way you react after stepping on the scale, and even your physical discomfort and shameful body language when wearing a bathing suit—kids pick up on all of this.

So how do we recognize and turn around a lifetime of self-destructive behavior?

Action step: STOP immediately any time you notice negativity floating through your head or coming out of your mouth. If you catch yourself saying something negative in front of a child, talk about it. Point out that it's not nice to say negative things about anyone including ourselves. Explain that we should be kind to ourselves just like we try to be to others.

Remember, you are beautiful and worthy right this moment. Not 10 pounds from now. Not two sizes from now. Not two months of calorie-counting from now. Right now. It's time you recognize this, and treat yourself like the amazing person you are. You deserve it.

Which brings me to the QOTD for Friday, July 4, 2014: Do you think you are a body basher? Do you think that you could use one of these tips to be kinder to yourself? Do you have other tips to be kind to yourself?

BBL with my own answer and some replies. :cool2:

So sorry about the crazy number, Magdalene! :flower3: It is still annoying and depressing when that number flashes even when you know it has nothing to do with anything that you did or ate to cause that crazy number. :headache: Here is some pixiedust: that the number goes away as fast as it appeared and the number is a little more reflective of your hard work very, very soon. :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Thanks so much for the cheering up!!! :goodvibes

I also love your QOTD, but need to go back and read it porperly. Just here for a quick look on a 10 minute break from my papers...

Got in a short 2-mile run this morning...I'm in Dumbo training mode big-time, now, and tomorrow is 9.5 miles! I'm planning to get up early and do that on our awesome local trail. I have to drive there, but the reward afterward is an Egg White Delight at McDonalds...YUM.

Hope that your run went well, Liz! You know your race is rapidly approaching when the mileage gets up there like that. :cool2: I know you will have great time. :dumbo:

Lisa, thanks for the QOTD! it hit me just in the right moment. I needed a short break from my desk and found this. Just when I felt so stressed out. Also, I slipped at lunch and had a pizza. It was just so tempting...

BUT one thing I have been doing over the last few days is trying to make a schedule for my days - like when to do what. I only did it in my mind. Maybe it would be even better if I write it down (have done that in the past and that helps). With this I managed to get myself to bed a little after 10 pm and that meant I woke up well rested at 6:30am this morning and had plenty of time to do a quick stop at the grocery store this morning to pick up all kind of healthy food items. Stores here all close at 8pm, and I won't be home before 8 tonight... So, I think time management is one way for me to help wioth stress.

There were some more suggestions that sounded good to me, so I will try to go back to that list and think about it!

And now I feel much better! Back to the desk...

Sorry for the stressful day, Magdalene. :flower3: Being rested always helps to be able to deal with whatever the day throws at you. ::yes:: Good job getting your stuff done in the morning, too. It is so easy to put stuff off when it is the end of a long busy day. ::yes::

I feel bad that you are working so hard today and we are in holiday mode here. :guilty:

And...another thing to cope with/handle stress (for me anyway) is to be on the right meds. No matter what I try, if I'm not on the right meds, stress/anxiety won't go away.

You are so smart to make sure that you get the right meds for you! :goodvibes

Morning all! Trying to get some stuff done here before heading to Cape Cod for the RAINY 4th of July! Yup, looks like Tropical Storm/Hurricane Arthur is due to drop his nasty weather here on us right in time to douse our July 4th plans. So instead of bonfires, s'mores, and fireworks on the beach, it will probably be games and wine around the dining room table!

Enjoy your 4th of July celebrations, Pamela. Hope there isn't too much rain! :umbrella:

I clean. I have found that having a cluttered house makes my mind cluttered. Which adds stress. I try to go for a walk if I can. Read. Cross stitch or scrapbook. The big issue with reading or crafting is I do zone out and I turn my ears off so I don't hear the kids.
I have also been known to play video games. LOL I will swipe one of the kids DS's and play animal crossing or something like that.

LOL, I've been known to play video games, too, Buffy! :rotfl: And talk about a win-win with stress relief and a clean house! :cool2:

Poor DS. It is so tough to be injured even when you are young and heal relatively quickly. pixiedust: to him that he turns the corner soon. That guy can run like the wind when he is in top form.

Ooo, thank goodness the world was still spinning even though you missed a few days of your walk. ;) Good strategy for resisting the siren's call of the almonds. :thumbsup2 Enjoy our nice 4th of July weather for a change! :cool2:

No worries! :flower3: I have great sympathy for you because my number was not so great today either. :headache: I think I should have had a few beers to deserve the number I saw. :rotfl2:

I am suspecting it may be a quiet day here on our thread. I am heading out to do my last run before my race on Sunday and the grocery shopping.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July everyone!

Not much time today to check in but I just wanted to say Happy 4th of July.

2.6 lbs down since the 1st....woohoo!!!

DH just finished preparing all the bbq to cook. He made chicken kabobs with only pineapple and chicken marinated in italian dressing. Its a somewhat healthier choice instead of burgers and hotdogs on buns. It's been a huge craving of mine lately and my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Hope everyone has a safe day. Will check back in later when things settle down.

Hi friends!

So happy to be down 2.6 at today's WI - but that was after my long run, so I'm not sure how completely legit it is. Still, even if a pound of it is down to the run, I'm still down from the 1st, so woohoo!

The run this morning wasn't exactly as planned, but I got it done! The alarm went off early, and it was still raining (thanks, Arthur!). I decided to sleep in a bit and see if it cleared up, and then go for the run in my neighborhood instead of at the trail, which would take out the drive time there and back. I ended up going out to run at around 9:15 or so...it was still *very* windy, but it had cleared up completely! So much so that the direct sun was crazy hot, even though it was only about 68 degrees outside. I did almost the whole run on a repeated 2/3-mile loop that's mostly shady. Not my best run, as I felt like I was fighting for every mile today (I think I'm just tired), but I DID IT. :)

Now we're taking DDs to the pool and then figuring out our dinner/fireworks plan for tonight. Tomorrow we take DDs to the Kennedy Center to see The ion King! Can't wait...

Happy 4th of July!
XO

Hi Guys, I'm back too

Sorry for disappearing in March.......life got very complicated and some stuff had to give. Some of it is now sorted, the rest I am still working on. Getting back on here was always at the back of my mind, but other stuff was keeping it there until yesterday.....

I had a random email from someone I didn't know to my private email address. I thought it was probably a virus or something but I read on....sooo glad I did. Turns out one of my best DIS friends has died...diagnosed with cancer on 2nd June, died on 6th June. I cannot begin to tell you how upset I am. The email was from her mom who is methodically going through her address book and contacting everyone. I'm so glad she contacted me. This lovely lady was my first DIS friend.

It made me decide it was time to reconnect with you guys. I think I am about 7lb up since I last joined in, and there will be more going on as I am going on vacation next week, camping in my lovely tent.

Once back, I will get back on the weight loss trail and will be joining you guys again.

I am still running, and am in a 5K race on 13th July for Cancer Research UK....I have decided to put my DIS friend's photo on the back of my running shirt and am going to send her mom some pictures.

Stay safe and healthy everyone. See you soon.

Helen, it is wonderful to hear from you! I have been meaning to send you a PM to see how you were doing! I am so sorry for your loss and it is sad that this is what brought you back to us! Putting her on your t-shirt for the race will be a wonderful tribute. Hope to see you around more again!

I am so sorry for your loss. What a wonderful way to honor your friend, and her mom will be so touched to receive those photos.

Welcome back!

Sorry about the cruddy weigh in Magdalene. I am guessing that is a lot of water weight that will go away quickly. Hang in there!

Not much time today to check in but I just wanted to say Happy 4th of July.

Good morning. :)

We had gorgeous weather for our 10k yesterday. I was slower than last year, but my goal was to stay under 1:10 and I squeaked in with about 30 seconds to spare.:goodvibes DS and Mike finished a little bit of ahead of me. DS needed a qualifying time for W&D in the fall.

Folks were setting off fireworks until very late last night. It is one of the things I really dislike about living here. Where I grew up on the east coast you could not set off fireworks. Our puppy did ok, but she was definitely agitated.

I made homemade corn tortillas yesterday for fajitas. I have tried a couple of times before, and I think I finally have a system that works. They turned out pretty well.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday. I think I am coaching tomorrow. :)

Good morning all! :goodvibes

Kudos to you, Liz, on a great loss and a great run! :yay: Especially in the heat! You will definitely be ready for Dumbo for sure. :dumbo:

Have a great time at The Lion King! I've seen the musical four times from Broadway to my hometown I love it that much. :goodvibes Your girls will love it.

Kudos on a great race yesterday, Rose! :yay: Your tortillas sound yummy! It does take some practice to get them flattened just right -- it's not a skill we naturally have in our modern world. :goodvibes

We had lots of fireworks going late into the night here, too. It's the wild west -- you can get fireworks from the reservation and they are not the "safe and sane" fireworks of my youth for sure! ;)

Your puppy seems like a very calm one in addition to being so dang cute. :dog:

Thanks for taking up the next coaching stint! :flower3: I hope you don't mind I helped you out with the week-end QOTD like we've been doing. :flower3:

Stay safe and healthy everyone. See you soon.

Wow sorry for the loss of your friend. Glad you're still running and taking care of yourself!

I had a tiny loss but in 4 days I guess that's good. Whooo I'm paying for eating "holiday" food!! I've been eating fairly clean and doing my green smoothies so eating a hotdog and some bbq and a few desserts over 2 parties may have been too much for my tummy!! I'm paying for it this morning. Oh well I guess that motivates me to getting back to better eating.

I need to get back to my workouts. I joined a boot camp a couple months ago and loved it!!! BUt they work out in a parking lot and it's just too hot for me to workout in this TX heat. I'm postponing going back until the fall so I started the Jillian Michaels DVD ripped in 30 I think it is. Not bad but there's several ex I cant do due to a foot injury. I just do another move to modify it and keep moving. I had not moved up to week 2 yet and now have missed a week due to work stuff and now I'm afraid I'll be starting over to get my endurance back. I guess be happy I'm doing something right.

Not sure I'll be doing anything today w/ the stomach issue. Hopefully tonight it will be better. I feel guilty for all the eating yesterday and not working out!

Catching up a few days of posts...

I clean. I have found that having a cluttered house makes my mind cluttered. Which adds stress.

I hear ya on this one! I am not one of those women who cannot help themselves from cleaning as soon as a slight bit of untidiness develops (if only...) I really have to force myself to clean the house. But I know that I feel a lot more at ease when the place is in order.

Good morning all! :goodvibes

Which brings me to the QOTD for Friday, July 4, 2014: Do you think you are a body basher? Do you think that you could use one of these tips to be kinder to yourself? Do you have other tips to be kind to yourself?

Oh, sure! Who doesn't, right? It's taken a few years of therapy, but I try to keep in mind that our brains are made to be judgmental to help us get through life, and they also lovvvvve living in the negative because it's the possible negative outcomes that we really need to worry about, so our brains are constantly reminding us of those. So put the two together, and it's no wonder my brain likes to say bad things about my body. The best thing to do is to say, yep, thanks brain, and move on.

I am grumpy - had a really horrible weigh in this morning! I have no idea what happened, but I am up 7 pounds from last Saturday.:confused3

Oh, that is very frustrating! I don't know about you, but I sometimes find it takes my body a little while to catch up with the changes / effort I have made. You're doing the right things, so hang in there and I'm sure your body (and the scales) will catch up :goodvibes

Not much time today to check in but I just wanted to say Happy 4th of July.

2.6 lbs down since the 1st....woohoo!!!

Oh yes, happy belated 4th of July to everyone! :) And well done desiree, that is a great loss! :cool1:

*****

So I checked in with my lap band surgeon on Friday, and my weight has dropped about 1-2kgs in two weeks. It's not an amazing amount, but is about what I should have expected considering how lax I had been foodwise. And then I kinda blew it a bit both Friday and Saturday. On the days that I have to see the surgeon, I give myself a bit of a pass, because I always end up feeling a bit vulnerable - the emphasis on the weigh in and the lack of understanding of what it's like to live with a band. This second point definitely came out on Friday when I tried to explain something that is going on with me, and the doc basically shot me down as in 'no that's not happening'. Errmmmm...it's my body and my experience, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about. :rolleyes2 anyway...

And then yesterday (Saturday) was a pretty good day. I had a gym reassessment, which usually just means they put together a new set of exercises to do (I don't like classes, so just use the weights and machines on my own), but yesterday was a bit different. The trainer was someone I had never met before, and he started going through what I already had been doing and found that at this point I needed to work more on my technique than increasing weight or reps. And I'm so glad he did that! My shoulders have always been a bit temperamental, but they have been getting really bad over the last few months, and he found that I was overusing them and holding tension through most of my exercises. So he adjusted my technique and gave me a few new stretches to improve strength through the middle core, and stop holding tension in the shoulders. Yay!

So today, I'm looking at my messy, messy house and know that I need to do something about it (see paragraph one), but my body is just so sore...! It wasn't a hard workout yesterday, but I had to do a few moves over and over to get the technique right, so my arms and chest are really feeling it today.

I didn't bother checking in for the weigh in this week. I only got my scales up and running on Thursday, so it would be a bit pointless, but I'll definitely drop in for the next one ::yes::

Helen--sorry for your loss. What a great way to honor your friend. I'm sure mom will appreciate the photos.

Good job on the weigh ins. I was a samer, but if I had to get on a scale now I'd be a gainer. Good thing I have some time to hop back on that wagon before the next weigh in!
