Wish Away the Pounds - August Challenge - with two new twists!

Lisa, I loved your quote - but then nearly fell of my chair laughing at the pictures of watching yourself training!! :lmao:

I have not come up with any great lunch ideas... But I am determined to bring a lunch tomorrow. Most likely some grilled lean pork and a potato salad. We will see...

On the not being too hungry when I get home, I have started to bring fruit to eat before I leave the office. This prevents me from becoming famished during the way home. Another strategy I have used in the past is to eat some carrots or bell pepper before I even start thinking about dinner. I really like both as snack foods and because they are slightly sweet, I feel they tide me over better than a cucumber or tomato.

Pam, don't worry about spending time with us when you an have precious family time this weekend! We all understand! I have always found that adjusting to USA time from Europe is so much easier! It just makes you an early riser for a few days. Especially helpful for trips to WDW when you want to be at the parks for rope drop. Of course not so helpful if you want to still be there for late night fireworks! :rotfl:

I haven't checked in for a few days, so here's a big mega-reply:

She's only home until Monday, so we will have to fit in a lot of catching up (and laundry) by then!! And she wants to be on campus EARLY on Monday, since her request for a single room never came through this summer and she is moving in with a roommate!! She wants to be there first to have first dibs on picking her side of the room!:rotfl: So anyhow, if you don't hear from me much for the next week, don't worry!
And that is exactly why I left my house very early on the first day I could move into the dorms my freshman year of college (and I got the side of the room that I wanted!). My other three years I was lucky enough to have a single room (probably because the head of housing had gotten to know me very well from all of my roommate complaints - not that I had bad roommates, we just didn't get along), so I was fine.
I hope you enjoy spending some time with her!

One of my strategies is to accept that I am not perfect and therefore don't have to try to accieve everything at once. Esoecially when I am struggling, I try to just focus on one thing. After all, this is a lifestyle change and you can't change your habits all 100% at once. I find it so much easier to focus on one, two or three things at a time and then move on to the next. With that strategy I have seriously change my sleeping habits (getting much more sleep now!) and have a healty breakfast most mornings! And I don't have to work hard anymore. Next step currently is to really get into a routine of regular running.

I'm the same way. I consider myself a perfectionist, but a very rational one - I want to be perfect, but I know that I'm not so I just try to do things in steps. I had actually stopped actively trying to lose weight a few months ago because I was in such a bad place that I had no idea what was going on - so I decided to take some time to just work on eating better and not care what the scale says, and then work on getting in more exercise ... and taking things in steps has really helped me.

Oh, lunch is something I need to work on as well!! I thought I did well last week, but then I was constantly hungry in the evening. So obviously something was not right with my lunches!! Will try to come up with a strategy for the rest of the week though!

I used to be like that, but then a started adding a snack between lunch and dinner. A few hours after lunch I would have a fruit or a piece of toast or a small yogurt - something not so big, but enough to tide me over for a few hours.

Lately I've been telling myself "because you're worth it." And then putting down the chocolate! That didn't work so great earlier this week when I was out of town! I am back on the wagon today! I really think never giving up is so very, very important.

I got the job! :cool1: I will start at the school office a week from Friday. I have a new employee training tomorrow afternoon and they will pay me for it! When I subbed we had a mandatory training and they didn't pay us. This will be a nice treat! The job starts late enough in the morning that I can continue with all my workouts so that is great. The bad news is I start work mid morning so that'll throw a kink in eating. Guess I will just have to wait and see how it all works out. May have to eat two small breakfasts. Dunno.
It's good to remind yourself that you are worth it - that's something that can be easy to forget when you're not doing well.
And congrats on getting the job! :cheer2: I'm sure you'll fall into a routine after a while - it'll just take some adjusting to figure out how to work your eating schedule into your work schedule.

I was bad yesterday. I was depressed and bored and just ate. I gained back like 4 pounds. =/

I'm hoping it is just natural fluctuation.

I'm looking into doing Zumba again. I dunno. It was discouraging this morning.

So sorry you had a bad day, but things will be better! One bad day doesn't ruin anything - just keep trying to stay on track!

WATP Musings, Training Thursday, 8/21/14: Have you ever tried an online workout video? Did you like it? Do you have one to share with us? Bonus points if it is Mousercise!

I used to use SparkPeople videos - Coach Nicole at SP is really the reason I got back into exercising.
These days I'm very into Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds. She has some not-so-intense easy to do workouts that are good for me when I want to get my heart rate up but I'm not feeling up to high intensity (which with me happens a lot more than it should).
I also like Jessica Smith (http://www.jessicasmithtv.com/), who has a lot of great videos with a lot of variety.

I know I probably sound like I’m really together and on the right path and I know what I’m doing … but I’m really not like that at all. In theory, I know what I should do and how to do it, but in practice … I have a lot of problems with execution. That’s where my biggest issue is.

Other than that … I went for a nice run (well, walk/run) this morning … I haven’t updated my running journal yet (I take notes while I’m on the road and put it all in a notebook after I get home), but the general theme of the run was “wow, they really need to put some trees in this park, there’s no shade.”
Meanwhile, I wanted to make something nice for breakfast today, but I didn’t want any of my usuals, and I just didn’t have the patience to search for a recipe I was interested in. I ended up having coffee and a banana blueberry muffin (relatively healthy – I made them myself a few weeks so I could leave out much of not-good stuff). There are some days when I want to cook and just don’t have the patience to find recipes (and then there are the days when I just want a donut – but thankfully most of those days I go for something else instead). If I have some time later this morning, I may look for a good lunch recipe.

And that's all I got for now. I hope everyone's having a great day!

It will take more than space for her. She admitted to and finally confessed to me(though I had heard of one from her mom briefly) 3 attempts at suicide in the last few months. I'm helping her mom research and at the same time encouraging her to get her into doctors and/or a hospital care before we all lose her. :( I know her mom is on the fence because she had been lying about some behaviors before this(all addictive behaviors but her nurse friend was telling her that it after meeting her and watching her a bit that its definitely showing some addictive personality) she's not doing well at all right now. Her SO and I think she needs admitted to hospital but we aren't wanting to walk over her moms shoes right now just working on encouraging her that if she doesn't take her to some dr's SOON that it will be eventual progress.

I finally got some sleep. I had my alarm off but not on purpose and slept till 11am I went to bed around midnight or one but was dozing off before that even. Now that I'm rested time to get dd up and do some school and housework.

I love the mousercise picture. lol To answer the question I have done online workouts on youtube. Lately its been occasional walking and the exercise bike though. My glucose readings were 140 the other morning and I'm not sure if I had a total 8-10 hours fasting. I can't remember I think I counted back and should have been. But regardless it should have been lowered 2 hours after I ate. I have to start looking over the food diary and see which foods can be causing it to go that much higher than the 114-118 it has been. I know carbs but some seem worse than others. Could be the candy that keeps showing up(sometimes me) sugar addiction no fun. :rolleyes2

Melissa: :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:

I think that's what you need right now (lots of hugs)! I have no idea what else to tell you with regard to your friend! I hope she will be able to get medical care as it sounds that this is what it needs!

Thank you so much for saying that! They are VERY precious days here! We managed three meals together at the table as a family yesterday... that made my day!

Thanks for the idea! She had an unplanned/free single last year (forced single) that was GREAT. She had some real anxiety/worries about dealing with a roommate and ended up LOVING her single!! I told her I would pay the extra for one this year, but by the time her number came up in the housing lottery, there weren't any left. She put her name on the list and has contacted housing a few times this summer, but no luck yet. So she plans to be FIRST IN LINE on Monday to be sure she AT LEAST gets her choice of sides in the room.

Next time you have some time to kill, find a few interesting breakfast recipes and plan to try them on a weekend. If you have ANY interest in oatmeal, I have an overnight oats recipe that I think is great (and I've tried many of them). I think it's posted on the recipe thread (I'll double check that)....... Applesauce overnight oats.

********************

Morning all! Another day in rainy paradise here!:lmao: Yup... DD comes home from the UK looking forward to some clear skies and sunshine and is met with nothing but grey skies, fog and rain! :sad2:

Hopefully she is FULLY back on EST as of today. She took a few naps (planned and unplanned) yesterday and was sound asleep for the night by about 9:15 pm. But got herself up okay today and hopefully is back on track now. But it certainly got her back into an early-rising-for-school routine quickly! Now to work on getting DS up and at it!

Down just a bit on the scale today and quite frankly that was a pleasant surprise. Had a bit of a "welcome home DD" treat on Wednesday night that I figured would definitely kill any hopes I had of a loss this week. And with all that has been going on, my food tracking has been hit or miss.... which is unusual for me!! But I'm going to make sure that every bite is tracked today, even if it includes movie theater popcorn (may try to get to FINALLY see Maleficent today).

Off to have another cup of coffee and wake up DS!...............P

I do NOT have the overnight oats recipe on the recipe board. I'll post it here for now. This is it, as found online.

Applesauce Overnight Oatmeal Recipe
Yield: 1 servingPrep Time: 2 min
This recipe is almost embarrassingly easy, as well as wonderfully thrifty! Of course, there’s room for personalizing it because you can use homemade applesauce, like I did. If you’re thinking that applesauce is too much work to make from scratch, guess what? I made mine in less than ten minutes using the microwave. And yeah, it’s just as good if not better than any applesauce I’ve ever had. If, however, you opt for a plain store-bought applesauce, make sure you add some cinnamon (or apple pie spices) to give it some more life.

ingredients:
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup milk of choice
1/2 cup applesauce
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or apple pie spice (optional, depending on applesauce)
Pinch of salt

directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a sealable container (like a mason jar).
2. Stir the mixture, OR seal it tightly and shake vigorously until everything is thoroughly combined.
3. Place in the fridge overnight (or several hours). In the morning, eat cold or warm up for 1-2 minutes in the microwave.

My tweaks/changes:

I use homemade plain (sugar-free, spice-free) applesauce and leave it very chunky..... I use 1-2 whole apples. I also use unsweetened almond milk instead of cow's milk. Don't skip the salt! It is crucial to a good taste.

I occasionally add 1 Tb of ground flax seed and/or 1 tsp. of chia seeds.... just for extra fiber and nutrition. It is edible within about 5 hours but can easily sit in the fridge for 8-9. I have also added raisins before eating. I have eaten it cold and warm.... great both ways! It can also be doubled or tripled to serve a few folks in the morning (I made it on vacation for the WW in our group).

Did you know there are lots of online workout videos available in several places? Even Netflix or your Amazon Prime may have one! :cool2:

OH MY GOODNESS! That picture transported me right back to my childhood. I had that record!!!

It's Friday! That means it is weigh in day!!

I see I already got the first PM in my inbox!

I hope you all have a friendly scale today. Mine was at least an improvement from yesterday, but I have already been lower this week. At least I am finally moving into the right direction!

Pam, your oat recipe sounds interesting, but this must be at least 8 points or something like that?

Sarah, I found it interesting what you said about appearing totally put together, but having difficulty to apply your knowledge. I can totally relate to that! I feel like I have become quite a pro at how this weight loss works, but I keep not doing the stuff that I know that I should do. It often is frustrating! Recently (and to a degree helped with the discussions we often have on here) I have learned to be more forgiving to myself. By just accepting that I did something stupid I can reduce a lot of stress and I know that having stress (be it work stress or emotional stress or even social stress) in my life is what makes me make bad decisions.

---

Had a great OP day so far! Very proud that I managed to pack my own healthy lunch (grilled lean pork, home-made low fat potato salad and a bell pepper). I was able to leave work early and managed to check out the farmers market that is just around the corner from where I live every Friday. I normally never get to go there as they leave before I get home. Bought some really nice produce, including two artichokes! Which are my absolutely favourite vegetables. Tonight I am going to have whole-grain pasta with tomatoes and parmesan cheese. Am really looking forward to that!

I saw you posted the recipe below - thanks! I saved it on my computer and I may make it next week (assuming I have applesauce ... if not it'll have to wait until after grocery day).
I hope your DD is back to regular time now ... jet lag can be tough, especially right before she starts school.

Yay for the unexpected loss. Always nice when the scale is moving in the right direction.

I've always been a perfectionist, partly because of my anxiety and partly because it's just my personality. I'm trying to accept bumps on the road and move on, but it's been hard. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that struggles with doing what I know I have to do and accepting when I do something wrong.

Pasta, tomotoes and parmesan cheese sounds delicious. I love a good pasta salad, so I may have to remember that for next time I'm trying to decide what to do with my pasta.

I was down 1 lb when I got on the scale this morning, but unfortunately I don't know if that will last. Not having my best day today - it's raining here, and for some reason rain always makes me want to eat. Oh well, I have a whole week until next week's weigh in, so that gives me another 6 days to make up for what I did today. Hopefully the rest of the week will be better.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Forgot to weigh in this morning. OPPS! Have had a crazy week but will try to get that done in morning. Not sure where I'll be.

Sleepy so going to sleep. We spent a lot of time doing school today. Still got a few things to catch up but after nearly 7 hours we had to break. The lunch that turned to breakfast and then all day out of the house missing all school lessons left us behind a day. She worked hard but we had a frustration with math again that turned to a blow up. I told her she will have to attend some of the online classes for math if she is having a problem with it. Its word problems she keeps getting sidetracked with. The rest going okay aside from her needing some kind of self discipline and motivation she seems to need me to keep her on track all day. Regardless I got 4 loads of laundry done and dishes. lol I rewashed all the living room linens we cover chairs/sofa with(they are leather and sticky in our warmth).

Pam, your oat recipe sounds interesting, but this must be at least 8 points or something like that?

Nope!! The old-fashioned oats are 4PPV, and the almond milk (unsweetened 30 or 45 calorie type) is 1 PPV for a full cup (and the recipe only uses half cup, so you could use the rest in your coffee or tea or just drink it!). If you make your own applesauce using one apple (or even two) that is a free fruit (official WW word on fruit is that you can dice it, slice it, boil it, bake it....whatever you want and it is still a free fruit.... unless you JUICE it.... then you have to count it because you've removed all of the pulp and fiber). I use liquid stevia (or Splenda if that is all that is available) and that is zero PPV, as is the cinnamon and/or apple pie spice. The only other things I add that add PPV is the flaxseed and/or chia seed.... which are VERY high in PPV, due to their fats, but a little goes a long way and I think of them as a health addition rather than a flavor addition..... and I only add them occasionally.

One of the things that drew me to this particular overnight oats recipe in particular is that it wasn't a crazy amount of PPV, as some are. Some recipes contain milk AND yogurt AND fruit AND maple syrup/brown sugar. TOO many PPV for breakfast in my world!

Make your own applesauce in the microwave, crockpot, or on the stovetop. SUPER easy, one ingredient, very few steps! Peel, core, and chop apples. Cook down over low heat until they reach the desired consistency. You can mash them or put them through a food mill to make them smoother (but personally I like them really chunky). No added fat, water, or sugar! DONE!

Yay for the unexpected loss. Always nice when the scale is moving in the right direction.

YUP!!

Good luck getting that math figured out! And good job on the laundry. DD and I finally got all of her travel clothing through the wash, but of course it was raining and we couldn't hang stuff outside, so my dining room holds the clothes drying rack and many hangers right now!

When the kiddos were younger and we felt like the summer was getting away from us, we used to try to spend a full day or two just out at the pool. Picnic lunches on the deck, no tv, etc. But things are too busy right now and of course, with the unusually cool weather we've had, the pool is absolutely ICY right now!

For today I'll just have to say that to "finish up" my summer, I hope that we will FINALLY get to see Maleficent today!! Then there will just be time to go through DD's stuff and get the necessities packed to head back to school on Monday.

*********************

Morning all! Just a quick hello here! Hope you are all enjoying the last of our true "summer". I know the nice weather continues into September and even October for many of you, but it always feels like Fall to me when school starts up.

Off to drink another cup of coffee and help DD with some sorting so that we have time for a movie (hopefully) today! TTYL........................P

It feels SO GOOD to have all the family under one roof, at least for a bit of time. Both of the kids have wanted me to wait and see Maleficent with them and this is virtually the only time other than our vacation at the lake when we have all been together this summer, so I'm going to go check and see if it is still available at the second run theater for tonight or tomorrow!

Forgive me for skipping the QOTD for today and if I am not around much this weekend.... just excited to have DD home~!! TTYL...............P

Enjoy every minute of that family time this week-end, Pamela! :thumbsup2

Great strategies for that pre-dinner eating dilemma, Magdalene! Thanks! :thumbsup2

I used to be like that, but then a started adding a snack between lunch and dinner. A few hours after lunch I would have a fruit or a piece of toast or a small yogurt - something not so big, but enough to tide me over for a few hours.

I love these suggestions, too, Sarah, thanks! :thanks:

I know I probably sound like I’m really together and on the right path and I know what I’m doing … but I’m really not like that at all. In theory, I know what I should do and how to do it, but in practice … I have a lot of problems with execution. That’s where my biggest issue is.

I can so relate to this one! ::yes:: I often tell myself to apply what I know but it is so much easier said than done. :hippie:

Melissa, sounds like you are making the adjustments to the school thing. Math is a toughie for sure! :thumbsup2

Out of time to write more as I have running group this morning -- 5 miles! :yay:

Oops! I had the wrong link for savoring summer. I fixed the link in the Musings and have it here again.

Do check them out because there are some fun ones and lots of time to give a few a try! :beach:

My bad! I'm sorry. :flower3: But maybe it's not much of a problem since I seem to have killed off the thread. :rotfl2:

I hope very one is having a great weekend! I just spend the morning working on my trip report, not burning very many calories that way! But it always puts me in an excellent mood to think back to our wonderful vacation! And I need to get the last cruise TR done as we have already planned the next cruise for the end of the year (and decided that after that we are done with cruising for the next few years as there are so many other vacations we want to take!).

Currently I have lunch in the oven, an easy pizza, using a wheat tortilla as the base. I have tried that a few times in the recent weeks and it turns out very well. I load it up with vegetables and then use low fat mozzarella on top and it is delicious. It really is more a flat wrap than a real pizza, but I like it and it is low in points. :thumbsup2

In the afternoon I am going to go for a run. Friday's run was quite good, I was even pretty fast! Some time ago Lisa had this wonderful picture:

card27451-380x220.jpg

Or one very similar to it... And it kind of stuck with me. When I was running I used to always just run as fast as I was still feeling comfortable. But recently I am pushing myself harder. I have been running long enough to know to which level I can push myself without then falling totally apart shortly after. But I feel by just moving a little out of my comfort zone during the runs, I am really getting better!

As to the Weekend question:

Besides being at the lake once, I really did not make it into the water this summer! And I am very sad about that! When the weather was warm, I had so much work and now the weather is already very cold (highs in the upper 60s!). I hope we will get some warmer days still as I would love to go for a dip in the swimming pool!

I had a long list of things I wanted to get done this summer and only got 1 or 2 crossed off! I thoroughly enjoyed swimming laps with a friend in the private outdoor pool she belongs to that is 3 blocks from my house! We didn't go camping, which now makes I believe our 4th year of missing it! We could squeeze in 2 days this week if DH decides he really wants to. He is off this week, but I go to work Friday (first day!). DS2 and I have things happening Monday and Tuesday. I know DH wants to go to Seattle and see a Mariner's game so we may do that. Trouble is I want to go when Felix Hernandez pitches and sit in "king's court." So that kind of limits planning since they don't release those dates very early. But it is a source of great amusement for my familiy that I (who doesn't really care about the games) want to do that! :rotfl2:

DH and DS2 made it back from Minnesota. They saw 6 colleges and have definitely crossed one off the list! For the others, now DS is just confused! Now he needs to start looking at colleges in his own backyard! I suppose if he got super organized we could visit them this week, too! It's tough trying to figure out the rest of your life when you're 17! :lmao:

One great thing I did this summer was hike! It was an urban trail called 4T in Portland. Great fun on Friday. Hike 4.5 miles all uphill in the woods then take a tram, trolley and train back to where you parked your car! Too bad it wasn't at all good for my foot. But ice is nice, as they say! :upsidedow Now I want to do more hiking--but may have to wait quite a while!

Have a super week!

Hi all! Just stopping by quickly, hopefully I'll have more time to chat tomorrow.

WATP Musings Well Being Week-end August 23, 2014: What is your favorite way to savor the last days of summer? Is there something that you've been wanting to do this summer that you haven't done yet? Share one thing you can do in the next few days to enjoy summer.

I only went to 3 baseball games this summer (I know that sounds like a lot, but I usually go to at least 5 or 6), so I'd love to go to another game before the summer is up.
I've also been spending a lot more time indoors than I usually do. I'm hoping I get a chance over the next few days to spend some more time outside enjoying the sun.

I'm tardy reporting in...I did my WI on Friday morning and I'm so frustrated. I gained again this week so I'm up 4 pounds this month, I'm sure my meds are off I'm really struggling with nausea, headaches, fatigue and just feeling like crap on a stick. I feel like I've been about 85% good in my eating choices and getting workouts in but even those are becoming hard to do. I'm scheduled to work two days this week and I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. ugh. thanks for the vent....I'm still here I'm trying

I will definitely have to check out the next installment of your TR, Magdalene! :cool2:

I haven't been in the water outside at all this year either. We already seem to be cooling down, too, so I might have missed my chance for this year. DH and I are planning a bike ride next week-end and that would be a first for the summer -- and since law school. :rotfl:

Sounds like you are going to cram the rest of summer into these next couple of days, Linda! :lmao: Hope the foot is feeling better soon! :flower3:

A little sunshine time sounds like a great way to enjoy these last days of summer! :cool2:

We are trying to enjoy as much time outside as we can, too. We are losing daying by more than 3 minutes a day now so it won't be long before it is getting dark early.

It's first day of school here. I'm so happy this is the last semester we have to do transportation because in January DS can drive himself! :dance3: Although I am going to miss that excuse to leave work early. :rotfl2:

Aww, Molli, so sorry to hear your meds are not working the way they should. It's so very hard to stick with a healthy lifestyle when you feel like crap. :flower3: Take care of yourself and this may just be a time when it is best to go for a maintain and just keep swimmin' :fish: pixiedust: and good thoughts that you are feeling better very soon!
