WISH Away The Pounds ~ Achieving in April ~ All are WELCOME!

Well that stinks Pamela, but at least he knows that he needs to make a change. I reading up on Sione, he gained back 60 pounds after the show too. I really don't think anyone has really maintain their "finale weight". It's to hard on them.

Pamela who was it? Quite a few have regained all the weight. That saddens me because it's such a wasted opportunity and it means they didn't fight their demons while on the ranch. I always wonder if they get mental help along with the physical help. Jillian tries and her mom was on the show once and she seemed like a really good psychologist, but it doesn't seem like they get enough help in that department.

Well... as usual the day is FLYING by! I did "waste" some time watching a few short videos about one of the former BL contestant who regained his weight  and is now working to get it off AGAIN! But it was inspiring and reminds me that I need to be VIGILANT about this! It is truly a DAILY if not HOURLY commitment to continuing to EAT HEALTHY and EXERCISE (even when I don't want to!). He said he hit the finale at 221 lbs.... a few weeks/months later he realized he was 250 but thought it was no big deal.... and the next time he checked he had gained back everything he had lost PLUS MORE!! :faint: It is scary to think about!

This is one of the reasons I really can't stand that show. The environment they are in for the show is great, regulated diet, multiple hours of exercise with personal trainers, and none of your old life to get in the way of your progress. However once they get back to their real life, it is very hard for them to maintain any of that. They also do a lot of this for "show effect" and I am sure there is not much in the way of counceling, either psych or nurtitrional, that they get. If they focused more on working with the chefs and nutritionists for their meals instead of just being served, they would probably make better choices once home. Also if they had intense psychological therapy and perhaps family therapy to help them understand why they have gained weight, they would probably do better once home as well. But sadly that doesnt translate into ratings like just showing images of fat people exercising and pushing themselves to the brink with a trainer yelling at them.

There is also the image that it presents that huge weight loss is just that easy and why can't anyone do it. I read about people comparing themselves to these people and then getting depressed when they cannot achieve the same results.

Its really not at all surprising that most of the people gain most if not all their weight back. I do agree that it is also very sad what it does to their metabolism & mental health in general.

Hey stranger!:wave2: Sounds like you've been REALLY down in the dumps. But have no fear, for the DIS is here!!:dance3::yay::cheer2: I think we all have those days/weeks/years where we all feel like beached whales. I guess the best words of wisdom I can offer is DON'T GIVE UP! :jumping1: I have this argument with the OCD DH all the time...if you don't care of yourself, how do you expect to keep on taking care of everyone else???:sad2: Just go back to the basics of what you know and take it a step at a time. I've voluntarily taken a break from running until June and feel like a miserable bloated ball of bubble gum, but I know it's not going to stay that way. I think having the right attitude too is a huge part of the mind games that I'm convinced our fat cells play on us :scared:. You've taken the first step and made a list of super positive steps. Now just start with one at a time. Next thing you know, you'll be bonking yourself on the head wondering why you got so worked up over it in the first place!

Totaly awesome reply!!!! :cool1:

I watched that too.. is the guy from Hawaii (I think) who went to BL with his cousin or brother? Sucks! But I think that probably happens a lot. I love the show but I also know it can be unhealthy for the participants and for thise watching who don't put the whole think is perspective...

Ok, I am kind of a mess. :sad2: I am going to try April on my own, and then if things have not improved, go see my doctor. I am not eating well at all, not taking care of myself, and not very happy. So, going to commit to getting it together in April. And then we'll go from there.

I have managed to eat all of the junk that I brought into the house.:rolleyes1, so that's taken care of. Ugh. I think there are still some pretzels, but they are not usually too big a problem.

So in April I will:
*exercise for at least 30 min every day (even if it is a walk around the block or on the treadmill)
*take my vitamins every day after breakfast
*give up the coffee and the soda. This is going to be hard. I could probably keep the coffee cause I drink it black. But I need to cut back on the caffeine. The more caffeine I drink the more soda I crave. And I am not drinking enough water. It will mean a couple days of headaches, but in the long run it is the best plan for me. Then in May, I will go back to the occasional cup of coffee or unsweet tea. No more coke.
*I will meal plan for the rest of the month.
*No chocolate, chips, etc in the house for the rest of the month. I will have a small (custard cup) of ice cream after dinner if I really want it. This has worked for me in the past, but the servings have gotten kind of big lately.
*I will not let myself get frustrated, depressed, etc that I have found myself in this situation again. My weight is still lower than it was on Jan 1, and in a healthy range. BUT my clothes are all to tight, I don't like how I look in pictures, I am making really poor choices, AND I feel ridiculously out of control and really just cruddy and gross. Since going g-f I just never got into a good routine with the weight management. And that's ok.
*I will check in here at least once a day.
*I am on the fence about tracking, because when you cook everything from scratch it really can be a pain in the butt, so I am going to think about that one before I decide.

Ok, enough is enough, time to get on the wagon. I am not usually a big fan of setting goals based on an event, but my DS graduates in a month. And right now, I feel so bloated, gross and bad about myself. I don't do big social situations very well, and I don't want to go into this one which is such a big deal, feeling so bad.

I think it is all just scaring me a bit, because right now, I really do feel like I could gain every pound back.

You have done so well and can do so well again! Yuu already have a plan laid out and you know you have the inner strength toi do what needs to be done and to get yourself back into the right frame of mind :goodvibes

Ditto, very well said :)

Well Sunday was the 2 week mark for the kittens.

aww, post more pics! :lovestruc

Really sorry, totally forgot QOTD today.....busy day at work, then slimming class tonight.

Hey, I did good! 4.5lb loss this week at the 'official' weigh in, really pleased with that.

Promise to post a new QOTD for tomorrow, off to bed now as it's 9:35 here and I'm in dire need of sleep!!

Totally understandable! And :yay: on the loss!!

Well Sunday was the 2 week mark for the kittens. After reading a bit online about how long you can use dry formula I was out Sunday night at 10 PM looking for decent formula to feed Sunny. The formula I'd been giving her was from last summer for Triumph and Shasta and although the expiration date wasn't for awhile I guess you're only supposed to keep it 3 months in the fridge after opening. So I smelled it-- it was a little strong, I think she just didn't like the taste of it--funny girl. She likes the fresh stuff-- has actually started suckling at the dropper' which is awesome. I went from forcing her once a day to 2-3 times a day now. It is exhausting but very rewarding to see her looking more healthy. Just a bit ago I went in and held her while Momma was eating and she curled up purring under my robe. (Seeing me in a different light now lol) They are out and about a lot more now-- I'll go in there and find Sunny out in the middle on the floor so I found some cardboard that will thwart escape attempts and put a heating pad in the closet. The closet just has a lot of sheets and blankets in there so that's going to have to be their area for now as they still are not at the age where they regulate their body temperature. I've also started putting heated water balloons in socks in their carrier because Mom is getting increasingly restless. She doesn't seem to be in heat-- just bored. She lets me feed Sunny but get a little meowy and after tries to feed her herself. I noticed she's taken her out away from the others to feed her by herself. The others are enormous-- they just take over. She's really a good Mom. I'll take more pictures tonight. I just haven't wanted to take any because Sunny was so small and sickly looking. She's looking much better as of today though. I was really scared we would lose her.

Sooooooo glad the little one is doing better!! :cool1: I can't wait to see new pics of them!! :goodvibes

Good morning! :wave2:

I have to give a shout out to you R&M. Sounds like you have had a lot of hurdles recently. It will be OK. Will it be perfect? No, but all of us here are committed to helping each other.:goodvibes

I had to laugh about finishing off the junk food because I did the same thing with a bag of Cheetos.

My dh has cried "uncle" as well. He has gained 20lbs!:faint: He wants me to help him but he does not want to weigh his portions. Grrr....

I have 2 books from the library and loving Pinterest with regards to cooking and menu's.

So R&M, you are certainly among friends here. While you deal with g-f, I have to contend with low sat fat, low cholesterol, and get this under 1500mg of daily sodium for dh. That is so flipping hard!

We are all "under construction".pixiedust:

Thank you all for the nice replies.:goodvibes

MM--I agree, definitely under construction. Your family has gone through a huge life altering event with all your dh's heart stuff. Hopefully he will turn the corner soon and get to a more positive place with the food. I think in some ways it is like going through the stages of grief--at least that's how I have felt at times. Does that make sense?

I realized this morning that the best way to describe how I feel right now is toxic--from all the crap I have been consuming. I don't continuously eat poorly, but it is slowly getting worse and worse. I am starting to develop those sugar cravings again and several times I have felt like my blood sugar was out of whack. Anyhow, hopefully I am turning the corner. It's going to be a rough couple of days I think--cutting out the sugar and caffeine and empty carbs, but hopefully it won't be too painful.

Off to work. Then a workout at the Y and spaghetti squash for dinner. Have a good day.:goodvibes

Just want to say REJOICE in these days!! You mentioned you were at a healthy weight but that clothes were tight...you are on the CUSP of GOAL!!!! That is something to CELEBRATE and pat yourself on the back! And a 5 mile run??? I should see some bragging and bananas going on!!:banana::banana: Sometimes we forget to celebrate how far we've come! I am about 50 pounds from goal and when I get to those last 5-10 pounds you need to come smack me and not let me give up! We are all excited for any WISHer to make it to GOAL!!! Keep up the great work!!

Morning all! I'm at work today and found just one minute to pop on and say hello! I'm working in the school office this morning and subbing for a 1-on-2 in Preschool this afternoon.

I'll try to read for a few minutes here until I have my lunch break, but no promises! TTYL..............P

Hi Friends usually just a lurker but wanted to say HUGs and stick to it to those who need a bit of help right now..

I am hoping to have a great finish to the week.. up to now I've lost 2.3 but want to lose a pound more by Monday which is my offical weight in for Atkins and it would put me into the 150's (159 to be exact but hey I in them!) so my plan is make sure to eat all my carbs, drink all my water and do a little excersize (like raking)

hope everyone has a fab day.. :wave2:

Hello everyone. Some good discussions going on around help, support and overcoming problems I see. Well done to everyone for having the strength to face their issues........it's usually when you can't face them that they escallate.

Thought I'd try and motivate us today a little by asking about treats - we all need 'em!!!

QOTD Thursday 11th April 2013

We all need little treats from time to time, whether it be something that is calorie laden, or something that upsets us medically (GF for example).......how often do you allow yourself such a treat? And do you feel it was worth the hassle and guilt afterwards??

On my diet, I get 5 to 15 syns a day to spend as I like, but they don't go far. For example 1 tbsp of light mayo is 2 syns; a Snickers bar is 15 syns. I tend to do without during the week, and have a treat at the weekend. As long as I stay within my weekly syns, I refuse to feel guilty! We also have a bit of a blow out once a month around payday...sadly this is usually a pizza from Dominoes or a meal from Burger King. I love junk food, but at least I know how to control it now! This method keeps me on track and it's obviously working as I'm now 32lb lighter than I was on 7th January.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Aaah good question... I am on Atkins so bread, rice, pasta, and sugars are a no no for me... I've been trying to find likeable substitutes (like pizza made on cauliflower crust or low carb bread/wraps and dreamfields pasta) but sometimes nothing beats what you really want.. I’ve not really caved and had too much that I’m not supposed to but I also haven’t put myself out there too far.. I have a bite of Hubs pasta or a cracker maybe a chip but to me right now it’s not worth it.. I do give myself a piece of sugar free chocolate every day – it taste like the real thing so I feel like I am getting away with something !

For me I want a treat everday lol, but I dont allow myself that. I usually allow a couple points for an after dinner snack, and try to avoid the sweets. My go to snack is a bowl of frosted flakes with some sliced banana on top. It gives me the crunch and sweetness I am looking for all in one. I also look at it as getting another fruit in and some dairy as well. As for a real treat I try to limit it to the weekends. I dont find it a hassle because I am trying really hard to stay within my points daily. I had a big gain a couple weeks ago and am still trying to get it off.

Thanks. :) But just to clarify, I was at goal--and gained a bunch back. Ok, being completely honest--16 pounds. And the running is great, but I have been dealing with chronic injuries. Yes, in the big scheme of things it is all still pretty awesome, but I have back slid quite a bit from where I was, and I was very frustrated with myself. And angry. But that is what I needed to be, and now I am feeling much more on track. :) I don't think 16 pounds is a reasonable goal, since obviously I did not do such a great job maintaining it, but I would be thrilled to split the difference.

QOTD--I build treats into my days, or I would go crazy. When I am on plan I have a tiny bit of ice cream almost every day and that is just about it.:goodvibes Sometimes I have a g-f beer instead of the ice cream. The issue is when I have the beer AND the ice cream....and the seconds on the ice cream, etc. Hence the 16 pound gain.:thumbsup2

Bigsis1970--I hope you see the 150s! :)

The frozen snickers were calling me at work today. It was like a siren's call..But I resisted! One of my coworkers hid some in the freezer for candy emergencies. I went to the gym and ran for 31 min (run 2 walk 1) and only drank water. So pretty on plan for today.

Hope everyone has a great night. :)

Thanks so much for coaching this week, Helen! :flower3: Great questions and some thoughtful responses. :goodvibes

A big WATP thank you to our hostess this month, Amanda! :thanks:

Please be sure and PM her your weigh in numbers tomorrow.

I am Lisa and I will be your coach for this week. :wave2: I am a veteran of many of these challenges since I found the WISH boards in 2009. My weight loss seems to move at a glacial pace at times but each year I end the year weighing less than what I started. I've also done things that I never dreamed of doing and made lifelong friends. I can honestly say WISH has made me so much happier and healthier. :goodvibes

I am in the Pacific time zone so I am going to post the QOTD for tomorrow and be back tomorrow for replies so you east coast folks, and beyond, aren't waiting on me.

I am a big fan of sparkpeople.com Although I am on WW now the content and emails from sparkpeople are wonderful. This was something that appeared in my inbox this week and is the inspiration for the theme that you will find in the questions this week.

I like to have treats available daily, although since I do low carb (not necessarily Atkins), my treats are usually a little sugar free jello with a dollop of whipped cream. That is a total of 0 carbs!!! :thumbsup2 Then I also have Friday free day, where I allow myself to have whatever without guilt. I also love junk food so when I am craving it during the week, I just put it off for Friday. Although usually by then, I am over one craving and on to another and never eat everything I have been craving all week in just one day. It works great for me, I never feel deprived or that I can't have something I want because I know I can have it on Friday. Also, I do feel that it keeps me on track and I am loosing weight, so for me its all good!! :woohoo:

Because it beats sitting on the couch
Because everyone has at least 10 minutes to spare
Because you want to be stronger than your excuses

QOTD Friday, April 12, 2013: What is your reason to exercise today? It can be from the list or share you own. Bonus points if you share your favorite exercise excuse and a way to bust it.

Have a great day all! :flower3:

These are all GREAT reasons to workout!!! My favorite one is: Because I want to create a better future for myself. This is so true for me and my situation. I only want to do this for myself, not for anyone else. Not to make anyone else happy other than myself. I feel so much pride every time I finish a workout, especially when I really don't want to in the first place! I am really excited to say that I am already halfway through my exercise challenge!!! :cool1:
Also I have noticed so many benefits related to continued exercise, from my clothes fitting better to an overall feeling of happiness that I had been missing before joining W.I.S.H. I truly enjoy reading along with everyone and I don't feel so bad and filled with self hate when I do slip up now and then. It all comes down to knowing I am not alone in my struggle and getting back up on the wagon is much easier when you have people offering you a hand up when you need it most. :grouphug:

===================

I ended up getting called off tonight!! :woohoo: So I now have an unexpected night off....... time to catch up on my DVR and then get a good nights sleep!! Hope everyone gets a little unexpected treat tonight, whatever that may be...... :goodvibes

For me it's Holiday related food, it's just such traditional stuff it's hard to let go. And yeah-- totally worth it as long as it's under some kind of control.

I'm just not ready to give up my looks as of yet. I don't know if I ever will be. I mean I don't need to look 22 I just want to look as well as I can without throwing a lot of money into it. I can handle time and effort.

My biggest exercise excuse is not having time. Like tomorrow-- on Fridays I've been wanting to get to work early because I haven't seen my friend for 2 days (pathetic I know) so I'll skip exercise if I don't get my but moving early. I guess I need to set the alarm so I get up early enough to go to the gym and be able to eat before work and have enough time to put on makeup etc. :drive:

By the way, thanks for the list, I've been wondering why I've even been doing everything I do....

Was a little sore today so was going to swim, did some reading on lifting weights and really think I ought to start doing 1/2 of my weights each day--different muscle groups because that is what is really emphasized so your body can heal and build muscle. Decided at some point it would be faster and less hassle to go for a bike ride. Couldn't figure out where I wanted to go and then thought of hiking. So I did it but didn't really enjoy it because all I could think of was my bike hooked up to the bars at the onset of the path lol. Next time I'll hook it up at the playground. Our town is prolific for bike theft. There's some lock company that guarantees their locks except for NY, a few others and us.

Fed Sunny 5 times today lol. She's definitely getting the hang of things. Some extra Pixie dust for her please--I think she's past the worse but still needs your good thoughts.

Hello Lisa!! Thank you for hosting us this week. :goodvibes

My reason to exercise is for strength. My core was very weak and I kept injuring myself. I do landscaping as my hobby and in order for me to continue that I need to build strength. I "dead lift" a lot of stuff and my physical therapist is helping me there.

INCH loss around my gut. I have lost weight but it seems to be hard as HECK to move that one. Weight loss alone is not going to do it.

Fixing my feet. I am digging the golf ball into my foot as I type.;) My plantar fascia muscles are ticked off, which has set off a chain reaction of issues in my body.

No bonus here. I am too new to all this. One day I will be able to answer that.
