Wisdom Teeth Removed - Update Post #46

We just got home from the grocery store. I stocked up on instant mashed potatoes, soup, ice cream, popsicles, pudding and jello. I bought two of those Ace ice pack things that you put in the freezer. The pharmacist also gave me a syringe just in case we need it. I also bought a box of 2 x 2 gauze pads.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I'll think we'll give the pantyhose thing a try!

I think I'm more worried about it than Kendall. I took her for breakfast at DTD this morning. Being the big softy that I am, I offered to buy her a Lego set to keep her busy when she feels up to it. She loves putting together Legos. The more complicated the better. She turned me down. She doesn't think it will be that bad and plans on getting out an about as soon as possible. I hope she's right!

Thanks again for all the great input!

You have my sympathy! I had all 4 of mine out at the same time, and two were impacted. The surgeon/nurse recommended DH get me some soda to sip on the way home, but with the mouthful of gauze, it just didn't work well. I did end up getting sick from it, so beware of that.

It truly wasn't as bad as I had feared. I put it off for about 7 years, until the one kept getting infected and I finally gave in. The IV was the worst part, and I'm a huge chicken. My appointment was at 3:30, and by 4:00 we were getting in the car.

Definitely agree with lots of rest. After the first day I stopped the pain meds and started using regular Tylenol.

Let us know how it goes!

When I had mine out they stressed using the salt water rinse on a frequent basis to keep the sockets clean. Good luck to her!!!

I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth out in the hospital when I was 19. It was the easiest dental procedure I have ever had done (I was totally out, so I have no recollection of it-unlike all my fillings and braces!). I used ice in the hospital for a couple of hours before I went home (I had to eat something before they would let me out-they brought me a sandwich and a soda  ) but that was it. The oral surgeon warned me I would probably swell and bruise quite badly since I am very fair skinned, but I didn't experience either one.

I was given a prescription for Motrin (what a waste, I could have just taken 4 regular motrins) that ended up being huge horse pills. I have trouble swallowing regular pills, let alone huge pills, and with gauze stuffed in my mouth to boot  . So I ended up taking extra stength Tylenol for the first 24 hours, but after that I didn't need anything (and I'm a pretty big wimp when it comes to pain).

I was starving when I got home (couldn't eat for 8 hours before surgery) and had mashed potatoes for dinner. By the next day I was eating potato chips (probably not recommended, but that's what I wanted and it didn't hurt to eat them). I didn't have any pain/complications beyond the first 6 hours post op.

DH had his wisdom teeth out in oral surgeon's office and came home with a script for codeine. Let's just say he was eating KFC extra crispy chicken that night :rolleyes1 . He only took the codeine right after the proceddure (he didn't like the loopy feeling) and then he was fine too. He didn't have any complications either.

If I could have all my fillings/impressions/(future) crowns/ (future) root canals done while I was completely out, I would in a heartbeat!

I hope you DD has an experience on the easy end of the spectrum like DH and I did :wizard: .

My DS19 just went thru this last Tuesday! All four taken out. It was a breeze, really. We went in at 10:00 am, they called me into recovery at 10:50. He stayed there for about 30 minutes to recover and we were on our way. He slept for two hours when we got home and he was pretty much ready to go. No pain meds needed AT ALL. You need to change the guaze in the mouth every so often when you get home (kind of gross, but not too bad), but then after a couple of hours, the bleeding stops. Don't sweat this, its not bad at all.

Things went very well this morning. DD was very nervous, but is doing fine. When the doctor came out to get me after the procedure, he told me that Kendall was very emotional and that it was normal after the anathestic. She is still pretty numb, but did manage to eat a little Popsicle and drink some Sprite. She is still bleeding quite a bit and we are changing the gauze pads every half hour.

So far, she only wanted an Advil. She hasn't be nauseous. I asked her if she wanted a pain pill and she said no.

One tooth did puncture her sinus cavity, so they put in a plug and stitched it. He put her on another round of antibiotics just to be on the safe side. She hasn't begun to swell yet. I don't know how long that takes.

So far, so good!!!

Glad to hear things went well! Here's to a quick recovery!:)

Glad things went pretty well. She may not swell-I never did. That night (after I took the gauze out) I didn't look like I'd had anything done.

Glad she's doing well!

Our DD had hers out last january and 2-3 Advil worked great for her, too.

She tried something stronger first but it made her sick, ugh.

Hope your dd continues to do well.

Well, she's eaten a milkshake, mashed potatoes, a Popsicle and drank a Sprite. She hasn't felt sick at all. The numbness has finally worn off and she says that one side hurts a little, but hasn't wanted a pain pill. The side that she says hurts is just slightly swollen. If you didn't know her, you'd never see it.

The bleeding has almost stopped, so she is giving it a few minutes without the gauze pads to let her jaws rest.

She is currently online IMing her friends. It looks like she is one of the lucky ones and is not going to have any major problems. Whew!

Ooh, I remember those days. I had the 2 lowers removed when I was about 19, and the upper 2 about a year later. I didn't have much pain or swelling, and I never got dry socket. I ate lots of instant mashed potatoes and applesauce!

The worst of it for me was the first time I had them out, they prescribed me Vicodin, which made me nauseous and crazy. I chucked them and took Tylenol instead. The first thing I ate after I healed was a Taco Bell bean burrito, and it was the best thing I ever tasted!! :thumbsup2

Glad to hear that it went well for her. Is that her in your signature? She is a gorgeous girl.:goodvibes

So glad things went well. When I had all 4 wisdom teeth cut out MANY years ago, it did take me about a day to start swelling. And my jaws got this weird yellowish brownish color--sort of bruising. Made some nice pictures!!
It went away after a few days, and the swelling only lasted 2 days at the most.
Good luck to her!!

Ahhh...PEG, just saw this thread now...so glad Kendall is doing so well after her wisdom teeth!!!

Love the new pic in your siggy!!! She is beautiful!!! princess:

Thanks, Karen! That's one of the perks of having an actor in the family. I have an excuse to get new pictures of her on a regular basis! :goodvibes

DH had his out yesterday morning - no swelling until today. He looks a little like a chipmunk ;). His doctor said today and tomorrow he'll probably get puffier and then it should go down. So don't be surprised to have your own little chipmunk tomorrow...

I'm so happy to hear how well she's doing. DH had a lot of pain yesterday and was almost back to normal today (except for the puffy face) - he said he could have gone back to work (but didn't!) and even was able to eat half a cheeseburger at noon. Hope everything continues to go well for Kendall!!!
