Wireless Printing

Hi all,

I want to purchase a printer with wireless capability, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Can anyone reccommend a cheap ($150 or less) wireless printer?

Also, once I have the printer, do I need anything else? Please tell me I can open the box, install the software and poof - wireless printing! My laptop is already wireless and I'm running Vista...but it seems like everytime I change up with technology it costs a fortune on unexpected additional purchases, but I'm soooooo tired of e-mailing myself documents to print on the old computer....

A few years ago I got a wireless HP printer for a really low price when I bought a Mac. I had to jump through some hoops on the phone with Apple and HP to get the right codes in my computer, but I think they work better out of the box with PCs. Since I got it up and running, it has been serving two Mac laptops faithfully for 3 years. I LOVE it. And once I got a guy on the phone at HP who knew what he was doing, it was pretty simple to get it going. I'm not sure, but I think you need a wireless network in your home. We have At&T. I have a 2-story, 2,500 sq. ft. home, and I can print from an upstairs corner bedroom to the printer downstairs in the opposite corner of the house. It is sweeeet! I can never go back to wired.

If you already own a printer that you like, you can merely add a wireless print server. The D-Link one that we bought was very easy to set up. Our ancient HP LaserJet 8000 and groovy Canon photo printer both hook into it so we can print to either of them from anywhere in our home.

Something like a D-Link DP-G321 should go for about $50 (delivered) brand new on ebay.

I just got a HP 4385 (don't quote me on the number) i am no where near it since it is wireless. I LOVE IT!! and to top it off it wal 99.00 on sale a staples a few weeks ago. I have seen them continue to be on sale. Very easy to install, and you just need a wall outlet. For about 15 min. you need to hook the laptop to the printer. I too have vista.

I have a wireless router set up downstairs that connects between our DSL connection and my desktop computer.

We have 2 desktop computers and 1 laptop upstairs that all pick up/use the signal from the wireless router. Once the connection was made to the DSL in the computer downstairs from upstairs, all of the computers were connected to the printer downstairs through the wireless connection.

Once that connection was established between the computers upstairs and the desktop/DSL downstairs, we just went to "add a printer" on each computer and it was very simple to establish a connection to the printer. The printer I use is not wireless. It is just a plain ol' printer.

I don't know how it will work but I just ordered one off HP's website yesterday with free shipping. I think it came to 118 dollars and change. This is a christmas present for myself. I would like to know if more then one computer can use it? We will have 5 laptops in our house come christmas and it would be nice if some could use it.

If the printer is wireless it means "wireless network" so if all of your computers are connected to a wireless network they will all be able to connect to the printer as it is just another spoke on the network.

I think that, as long as your computers have the printer driver, it will just take right off and work from the get-go.
