Well, I went out today to get some photos of things in my backyard. Not much going on there these days as just about everything is covered in snow. To me, this is the MOST boring time of year to live up north. I thought I would not get much for photos, but I surprised myself a little. Sure, nothing is fantastic by any means and I'm sure that someone will be roasting me in their minds about my lack of professional photos, but what the heck, right? :) My results are below. Please feel free to comment whether bad or good. I really need to start getting the hang of this stuff.

Thanks!

My first photo. I tried this to get the difference in dark wood chips and white snow.

Footprints in the snow. A take off of footprints in the sand (just not quite as dramatic):

My DD's sled filled with ice:

One lonely blade of seeded grass (or flower):

A pepper that we never harvested:

Peering out the window (taken for fun, not for artistic value):

Melting snow. My favorite thing to watch :woohoo: :

I like that first shot with the wood chips. Also great idea with the foot prints in the snow. I like the one with the dog prints.

Thanks Kyle! That is actually my cat's prints. I saw them and decided to make a set of my own too. I was thinking of putting together a collage of footprints as there were many different types out there (cat, dog, deer, etc..) but the light on the others was terrible and I didn't want to actualy hae to work at the shots too much. By the looks of the weather tomorrow, they will be all gone... I have a feeling that since winter only started today, that I will get another chance at this... unfortunately. :sad1:

Here is one of the sky tonight. I wish the dynamic range could have gotten both the moon and the silhouetted trees in one shot. Is this even possible? In this shot, the moon looks like the sun!

There you go again with your water drops!!;) Remember how you had all of us taking water drop photos months ago? You know how some photographers specialize in nature or dogs shots? Maybe your specialty could be water drops!:rotfl:

By the way, really nice photos, Andy! I agree with Kyle about the footprints -very nice. And I especially like the lone blade of grass for some reason.

I certainly remember that! :rotfl2: When I shot that one, I thought of putting princess wrapping paper behind it! That was a fun "assignment" that we had going on there.

And I especially like the lone blade of grass for some reason.
And that is exactly how I feel about it too. "For some reason", I like it. Can't really say why though. I liked the way the sunlight was lighting it, but that wasn't really displayed too well in the final photo. Oh well. Try, try again I guess.

Thanks for the comments!

I love the blade of grass. It seems like it's standing there trying to soak up the weak rays of the sun. I also like the red pepper on the white snow. How did it end up on top of the snow? My favorite is the shot of the moon. I love the moon and that is just beautiful.

Here in KY we don't have anything that looks like winter. Thanks for sharing your snow!

Thanks! You can have some of my snow whenever you want it. Just send along your address and I'll pack as much as I can in the biggest box I can find! Anything to get it out of my yard... :)

The pepper was on a plant just barely hanging on. I was going to try to take a pic of that but when I moved it a bit, it fell off. That made a better shot, I think, although it does look a bit un-natural to have a pepper on the snow. Kind of a HOT/COLD motif, I thought.

Very nice photos. I especially like the pepper one and the blade of grass. I haven't been out yet with the camera and the snow, but you inspire me. That shot of the moon is awesome. I remember trying to get water pics with my new camera during that assignment, but never got anything worth posting.

I'm thinking positive, and the snow we have just had is going to be the worst of this winter!! (even though it wasn't winter yet)

Get out there and shoot! Just kidding. It took me awhile to get out and try it. I was surprised by what I found. It makes you really look around to find any type of shot worth while. A nice exercise for the eyes.

Nice pictures! I like the sled one , very cool. It seems we aren't going to have any winter here this year :guilty: I guess we will see what January brings.

nice job andy, i like the pepper as well, kind of a memory of summer's passing..right now we are having rain and a cold front so unless i want to take ice photos....and last week i tried that and slipped/fell the whole way down the steps( ouch) so think i might wait till it snows again;)
