Winter Olympics No Video Thread

Just a heads up… coverage on NBC will be ending next hour for the extended pregame of the Super Bowl. Continuing coverage is on USA, NBCSN and later on CNBC.

I agree that the clipped gate is what caused her to fall. However, it’s not clear that it wasn’t the weakness/pain in her knee that caused her to clip the gate in the first place
We don't know that.
It's possible the imbalance of a leg with a big brace caused her to veer toward the gate.
We do know she hasn't won gold since 2010. That is a long time ago in elite athlete terms.
I hope she graciously retires again. And stays retired.

I’ll defer to she had successful runs earlier in the week on the same course that were among the top times. Today had a mistake, they happen in downhill when you only get one shot.

her line was too tight and she hit the gate, nothing to do with her knee IMHO.

As a racer you try to take the straightest line down...

she took a risk and paid the price

Her left knee was injured and she hit a left gate. It could be she didn’t have the strength to correct the too tight line in time and/or to recover from clipping the gate.

or she just hit a gate.

I used to ski race (GS was my jam), and while no where near elite at my best. I understand what can happen in an instant.

until she comes out and says what happened I am not going to second guess her ... and I am not going to crap on an athlete when they are injured after trying their best.

crashes happen, to ski at this level you have to be willing to push the limits and not play it safe. It is a very dangerous sport.

two other racers besides Vonn also crashed out today, one was able to ski down.... the other also had to be airlifted off the mountain.

The gate she hit was on her right.
Hmmm. I only watched the fall once. I’ll go back and watch it again, but I did think it was on the left. Her knee weakness could still contribute to her not being able to recover from the clip.

That’s so cool! My DD lives to ski (I meant to type “loves to ski” but “lives” also works). She spent 3 seasons teaching in Colorado and one in Oregon. She came into skiing as an adult so she doesn’t race (thank god!). She films herself back country skiing and shares them with me and that’s quite enough, thank you very much.

There is no way she’s going to say her knee gave out. I do hope her injury is not something that will effect her mobility in her future.

It is such a wonderful feeling to ski. I think I started when I was 3... my baby skis were mounted on the wall on the lodge they were so tiny. I was lucky to live near ski mountains, so I had the opportunity as a kid to ski a lot. Colorado is a great place for skiing, I would love to go sometime

I'm reading Vonn underwent surgery to stabilize a left leg fracture.
She is being treated by a team of US and Italian physicians.
ooof... I hope it is not her femur.

Broken left leg is all they are reporting now. Best wishes for a successful outcome for her. That was a rough crash. My old dog was being sicky after a shot, so I was up to watch it and saw it live as I love to watch the skiing events

She literally stole the opportunity to ski in the Olympics from a team mate just so she could enact a heartwarming and inspiring comeback. Instead of capping off a storied career, she soiled it with selfishness and hubris. I really lost all respect for her.

Edited, I meant to come into this thread earlier in the week to say she should NOT ski.

Did she? Was there an alternate on the team? Or a teammate who had qualified but couldn't compete because of the limit on number of skiers from each country?

Men's Single Luge was fun to watch all the runs including the final. Impressive usage of drones for the first segment.

Big Air Final also fun to watch, some hard tumbles but you could tell they were having fun trying to do what they could and push.

Freestyle men's and women's ski slopestyle fun too although we've just watched the qualifying at this point.
