Winter Olympics No Video Thread

What is your favorite music... movie soundtracks.... classical... combinations...pop/rock combos.... I prefer movie soundtracks if I recognize the movie and how skater interact with the theme.... MacArthur Park is fun and with her interviews....it now makes sense...as I don't remember her as young skater
Movie soundtracks are good. I can't say I can recall an exact song specifically at this exact moment for figure skating but will say I've found over the years I do like the more modern take on song choice rather than a more classical song genre, sometimes classical songs work but unless the performance is just amazing in tricks I find I'm a little less invested :o. Sometimes the more funny comical tracks lends to a more interesting skating run especially if you have pairs.

I can say that the usage of Lindsey Stirling in the Paris 2024 summer Olympics by Suni Lee was a very good choice. Lindsey Stirling's songs can build and pack a punch and it worked perfect for the song "Eye of the Untold Her" for Suni's routine. That one sticks out in my memory at this exact moment.

Big fan of Olympics in general - especially the fringe sports that I watch once every four years, like curling. Not a huge figure skating fan, but most everything that's on, I'll likely be watching. :)

Figure skating for sure. Rooting for Ilia Malinin. Hope he gets to go home with some medals. I hope the US women can podium this year. I think Sasha Cohen was the last one to medal in 2006.

Just like gymnastics it's amazing the technicality that goes into figure skating. I do think the music, when done well, gets people a bit more emotionally invested with figure skating compared to gymnastics and adds to their performance. Get chills with certain routines that's for sure.
Gymnastics is more of a routine. Skating has much more of a performance element. Womens Floor is the only gymnastic event with a performance element. And it's the only one with music.

I like skiing ... especially the cross-country, that seems like such an endurance race. Also the giant slalom. The downhill kind of scares me with how fast they're going and the injury potential, though I guess that describes a lot of the sports. I'm looking forward to the new sport - ski mountaineering. I also like the half-pipe snowboarding. I think I kind of enjoy the winter olympics more than I do the summer games.

You have rhythmic gymnastics which is not considered floor which also has music.

I was not talking about technical as in scoring technical as in part of the competition. I was talking about the technical skills they exhibit in order to complete the actions they do.

I do not understand trying to debate routine vs performance. I commented with how I enjoy figure skating. The specific action a gymnastic athlete does that matches the beat or the intensity of their specific routine building with the music to me is the same as a figure skater (or skaters in pairs) does with their routine. The leaps tumbles and more are like the leaps spins and hand offs for figure skaters. And to me the music choice influences a lot how that all melds together.

Moguls are crazy scary to me, all that bump and hits I cringe at what that does to the joints over the years but it's fascinating to watch how the minor adjustment in leg position (including how close they are to each other) influences how jarring or smooth they can be.

I enjoy the skating, but the judging over the past 20 years had so much controversy and bribery that I only watch for the enjoyment. The winners may not be the best performance these days.
