I was looking forward to watching this outdoor hockey game between the Caps & the Penguins at 10 AM, Pacific time. They have postponed it until 8 PM, Eastern time.

We really enjoy watching these games on New Years Day - seeing people freezing, while we watch from the comfort of our nice warm home! This must be about the fourth year they've done this.

Yes, it's the fourth year... and I'm truly annoyed that the Pens get to be in it again. Nobody will do it as well as we did. Hmph.

I love that the Pens have been in it twice. ;) Oh yeah.

And this is the second time I've gone. I was looking forward to not freezing as much as I did in Buffalo. But since it's now at night, and the temp is gonna drop, no such luck for that.

I can't wait! Look for me, I'll be the one up in peanut heaven freezing my butt off in my Fleury jersey! Go Pens!!!!

The time change is messing up our plans! We are driving in to my sisters tomorrow and when it was in the afternoon our 12 hour drive should have lined up with about what time my sister would be getting back from the game. Now we will be at her house way before they get back from Pittsburgh, even leaving later to allow for the ice to start melting instead of leaving before sun up. We are also loosing a whole evening of visiting time.

My dad is going to be there! He's a season ticket holder with the Pens. All I can say is: Brrrrr.

Man... I had my whole day planned out to be a lump on the couch in front of the TV -- the Rose Parade was supposed to end just when the Winter Classic was scheduled to start. Oh well, I guess I can adapt.

Why did they change the time? (I heard there was rain in the forecast. Is that the problem?)

Yes, the rain possibility.

There's going to be heavy rain in the morning/afternoon. The ice would be too dangerous for the players, it will flood and be uneven. The ironic thing is we had so many days below freezing for the last month and the first couple of days above freezing is when this game is.

Also because it is supposed to be too warm in the afternoon and by evening it will be colder.

Warm? Yup, I was out today in just a t-shirt washing the car. Not quite 50 here about an hour north of Pittsburgh.

I think I caught that it was 60 in Pittsburgh today.

Suppose to be raining in the morning and afternoon. "The forecast has been consistent" is what I heard them say. Hmmm, then again, they are pretty "consistent" also when they are forecasting "death to all" because of some big snowstorm coming and we get whole half inch of snow....

It will be unique watching it outdoors under lights.

I would rather it be weather like it was in Buffalo. That was awesome watching the snow come down. In fact, FSN just replayed the Buffalo game and I was just watching it.

If interested, I never caught what time the alumni game was or if it was aired on TV, but the NHL Network will be airing it 6:30 EST on January 5th.

It's wasn't the warm weather that was the problem, it was the rain. And sure enough I just heard rain on our window.

Thanks for the info on the alumni game! We saw highlights yesterday but would like to see the whole thing.

See now my sister who is going said they were told it was to allow the temperature to drop in the evening because it will still be raining.

Tuesday anyone? because that is when it will be if it gets postponed. Works for me except if it is Tuesday I should already be on the road but since it was changed to evening I'm waiting on the sun to come up.

Playing the game at night will be great viewing on TV but I wonder if the puck will be harder to see in the dark for fans in the higher sections of the stadium? Wish we were going but they were only allotting 2 tickets for the Winter Classic for each season ticket order (at least for Caps fans), no matter how many season tickets seats you actually have. So we have 3 seats in our mini season ticket pack but were only allocated 2 Winter Classic tickets grrrrr.
Let me be the first to say LET'S GO CAPS!!!

For us it workd out great!!!

I have to work til 2:30 and the BF has his own hockey game at 2:15 - so 8 was great.

Looking forward to couching it!!!

I would think they will be putting up some lights around the rink. Then again, do fans have any problems with watching football or baseball games at night in a stadium? I think there are plenty of lights and the rink will be lit up just fine.

Ok, you can leave the thread now..... :rotfl:

I'm sorry you didn't get to go! We were SO LUCKY for Buffalo, season ticket holders weren't even guaranteed tickets, it was a lottery. I think 1 in 10 season ticket holders got tickets. There were only 7,000 tickets for Penguins fans! Somehow we lucked out.

It should be a great game!! Have you been watching the 24/7 special on HBO? I've felt so bad for Caps fans, having to watch while their team is in a slump for the first couple episodes. It would've been like watching behind the scenes of the Penguins at the beginning of the season.

Think they gave the Caps 15,000 tickets which is quite a chunk for an away game like this. The 2 ticket limit was reasonable given what they were working with imo. It just made it tough for those who have season tickets for more than 2 (usually families who take the kids to games). But overall I can't complain that Caps fans got screwed by the deal - other than we wanted the game HERE not in Pittsburgh :sad2:

Honestly, fans weren't freaking out about the losing streak. There's been a lot of frustration the last couple years with their performance in the play-offs (understatement). General opinion has been that the system the Caps have used for the last couple years wasn't going to get us a Stanley Cup and change was needed. They finally implemented some system changes mid-season and they didn't "take" immediately hence the slump. It's unfortunate that happened when they were filming 24/7 but at least the Caps started to pull it together before the Winter Classic. We were at the game that broke the losing streak against the Devils and the fans were hugely supportive from the moment the puck dropped, they weren't dogging the team or anything like that.

That said, beating Cindy Crybaby and the Pens today would be HUGE, 2nd only to winning the Cup.

I didn't think fans were freaking out about it, true fans know that's just part of every hockey season. I would just hate to watch a special with my team when they are in the midst of a slump.

It was a great game. Caps fans there seemed really nice. And Novie didn't get any points, so there was at least a little something for us to feel good about.

Oh my - I feel for you sitting out in that weather! How wet were you when you got home?? Sounds like a good time was had by all, and the comments I've heard from Caps fans were pretty positive about how well everyone got along, Pittsburgh people were nice, etc. Apparently everyone got together and chanted "Flyers suck" for a while which was quite the bonding experience :thumbsup2

A little grumbling going on about Ovie's goal that was waived off :confused3 (Fluerry had enough time after the contact to make a save before Ovie's shot went in) but overall we're happy that the Caps seem to be getting the hang of playing defense - finally.
