Winter Break Dates 2012???

We live in SW Connecticut.
DD in public school goes back on 1/2.
DD in private school goes back on 1/8.

It doesn't have so much to do with the dates as it has to do with what day of the week Christmas falls on. They like to make two week breaks be two weeks of Monday through Friday off. Since Christmas is on a Tuesday this year most kids go to school until the Friday before (which is the 21st) It would be dumb to make them go to school on the 24th since that is a Monday.
Then they get two full weeks off. Since New Years is on a Tuesday, most kids do not go back until the NEXT Monday or Tuesday which would be the 7th or 8th of January. Again, it would be dumb to make them be back at school in the middle of the week, and then get the weekend off. Monday through Friday times 2 works best for traveling and for the parents to take time off.
So, when Christmas falls LATER in the week kids are home for several days BEFORE Christmas but when it falls earlier in the week they are not.
Texas kids have the 21st (Friday) as their last day and don't return until 1/8.

You can't just look at the dates, you have to look at calendars :thumbsup2

I and my kids did.

Kids here (Central NY area) are off Dec. 22nd (Saturday) through January 1st. May seem "shorter" than more but NY schools tend to get a mid-winter break off in February as well as a spring break in early April I personally think they should do away with mid-winter break and have a few extra days off scattered through out but I don't work for the schools :p We also get a lot of snow days, except for last year which was weird because we only got like...50 something inches of snow when we usually get like...120 or something. It was weird so we're just waiting for Winter's Revenge this year.

As for it being "dumb" for kids to go back to school in the middle of the week, you should see some of the random days kids get off here. One school district had the kids off randomly on Wednesday. No holiday, the kids just didn't have school. A few districts give the kids off for Yom Kippur. The kids were in school Monday, off Tuesday and Wednesday, and back in school on Thursday.

We are in Nashville. We get out on Dec. 19th and go back on Jan. 2.

Most of the schools around central Arkansas get out on December 21 and don't start back until January 7. We actually planned our trip the week before Xmas with the hope that crowds won't be as bad because so many school districts are recessing later this year. We shall see...
