Anyone else NOT in the wine loop? I have a severe "mold" allergy, and cannot drink wine, as does sister (family trait). I have a problem going to "nice resturants and your wine selection. .... ... then you say "we don't drink wine and you get the LOOK like your less than a patron of fine food. Might be dressed fine, Ordered correctly, Your appropriopriately answering and asking questions etc... . but the wine thing you become the island table. I used to explain the "mold" thing but have given up, they don't need my medical history. We can have cocktails, and do. just no beer, or wine.

Anyone else have this issue, feel out of the loop?, How are you handling the problem. Waiters? They snatch up your "wine" glasses like your going to break them, or your too cheap to buy it. I used to like to try wines, always got a severe headache and sick, and then my allergist asked me are you drinking wine or beer and what happens, I told him, I don't drink alot I always seem to get sick? he said ALLERGY!!!! DAUH!!!! Haven't had any in years.

Thanks for the vent. Mky princess:

I've yet to exp a look or subpar treatment from a waiter because we didn't order wine or another drink. I do enjoy wine, but sometimes I don't want any and don't order it, and have never felt looked down upon - though I am sure that happens, just hasn't happened to me.

We had a meal at Yachtsman last May and I wasn't feeling up to a glass of wine so I passed and she didn't seem to care one way or the other.

I'm sorry you feel that some look down on you for it =( You shouldn't HAVE to offer explanation, but maybe you could say "due to a severe allergy, I can't drink anymore" to shut them up? Again, you shouldn't have to give any explanation.

Sulfite allergies are very common--if I were you, I would simply say "I'm allergic to wine" and order my preferred drink instead. Don't let it bother you. I'm sure no waiter is trying to make you feel like you might "break the wine glasses" or wants to hear your medical history. LOL! Sometimes people "hear" things in words that aren't meant. Meaning, maybe they hear "we don't drink wine" as a cold reply or something? (like you look down on those who do...?) Obviously it's not what you mean, but someone might "hear" that in your tone. Just like the waiter surely doesn't mean to make you feel second class by his/her treatment of you after that comment. They want a good tip, remember! ;)

I don't drink any alcohol due to a medical problem. DH will occasionally have a drink but not too often. I don't remember ever being made to feel bad for not ordering wine or a drink. When they ask I just say no thank you. I've never felt the need to give them an explanation.

I know how you feel!!!!!!!!!!!

I dislike wine immensely....not allergic, just hate the smell...
people always try to convince me to drink it...
I have even bought someone a $200 bottle of wine for their birthday..

but for me, I like just plain vodka.

and yes, I do get eyeballs because I refuse a glass of wine.

but I just adamantly say.

I DON"T LIKE WINE

Same here, drank wine and would just get so sick - I thought it was just a hang over thing, but it would happen no matter if I had one glass or five. I thought it was odd and asked my doctor and she said the same thing - I already knew mold spores were one of my major allergy triggers, but had no idea that that could happen from wine. Sulfites are also a problem. She said the red wines were worse than the white ones. Can't remember why though.
I don't have a real problem with waiters, even at very nice restaurants. I am allergic, it isn't that I CHOOSE to not drink wine, it is an allergy. If you were allergic to shellfish or peanuts, you wouldn't say I don't eat shellfish or peanuts, you would say I am allergic. It isn't a choice, it is a necessity.
That said, I've never felt that waiters treat me any differently. I just always ask for a "girly" cocktail anyhow. Particularly anything fruity or blue!

We don't drink wine or any other alcohol (personal choice), but we've never felt any need to explain ourselves when we turn it down. That's our choice, and our business.

We do sometimes feel like we get sub-par service because of it. At WDW, the only place we really noticed this was at Alfredo's, but it's happened at real world restaurants lots of times. Very annoying!

They snatch up your wine glasses because all good service clear away the dishes/glasses/silverware that you're not using or are finished using. Don't take it so personally.

I very rarely drink wine. I get migraines and for some reason wine just really gives me terrible headaches. I can drink beer though without a problem. I also like vodka, but it has to be good (expensive) vodka. There have been times where I feel like I've gotten the "look" when saying no thanks to wine.

I've never noticed that I get sub-par treatment just because I don't drink wine. Maybe I'm dense, but at all the fine dining places I've been too, the service has always been great even when I'm just ordering water with my meal.

I always feel very angry when anyone tries to push any mind altering substances on me. That peer pressure thing that does not make me feel like they are looking down on me - it just makes me angry. I just do NOT like that alcohol feeling in my head. Peer pressure can also be in the form of the wait staff at any restaurant. I assume that you are a confident grown-up, so you do not need to make any excuses to anyone! That said; a few times I have tried to have blackberry brandy at home; it is so delicious. Each time, I wind up with hives that itch and are very red and hot. This is even when I have only one tablespoon ! I never thought about it before; could it really be because of my known mold allergy ??? I never connected that before.

We had one step worse at Portobello one night.

Neither DW or I drink anything - alcohol, soda, etc. We're just water drinkers. So when the waitress asked us about wine, we said we'll just have water. The waitress then asked if we wanted mineral something or another bottled water. DW asked if she could just have regular tap water. I don't even think the waitress replied. She just had an irritated look on her face, grabbed our wine glasses, and went off in a huff. I think she was ticked that she would only be getting a tip on food and an additional alcohol bill.

Little did that waitress know that I've tipped up to 30% before for outstanding service. So while she might have been happier getting 15% from the next table and their two glasses of wine, she could have had 25% - 30% on probably the most expensive food items on the menu and dessert.

DD was cranky and the waitress turned us off so bad that we just got up and left. It put such a sour taste for us (first visit) that I think it was 3 more years before we tried Portobello again. That visit was just fine though - no snotty server.

I can not drink wine with seafood, so I have to wait to order a drink until after I check out the menu. So always start with Water or Ice Tea. Sometimes I feel like I am putting a "bother" on the server. But I just blow it off.

Sometimes I wish I had that problem, the allergy that is :rotfl2: Seems that chardonnay and I get along far too nicely sometimes, especially on vacation, lol. Tends to eat up alot of the souvenier $$ -- oh well, the kids can live with one less Mickey t-shirt.

Claudia, I would advise you to also consider that you may be allergic to sulfites. You may be allergic to them, not to "mold". (although I think just about everyone reacts to molds at some level! yuck!) Most people that I have heard of who are "allergic" to wine are allergic to sulfites. If you read the label on wine, it will usually mention that wines contain sulfites since so many people are allegic to it.

I am by no means a medical expert, I'm sure someone here is a nurse or doctor who can give you more info on sulfite allergies.
